“Temperatures soared into the upper 90s and higher Sunday from coast to coast, bringing out heat warnings, wilting athletes and driving others into the shade. The choking heat was expected to continue for the next few days, and the hot air was moving toward the East Coast, meteorologists said.”

Just remember folks, there is no connection between this abnormal weather and that ‘global warming’ hooey we’ve all been hearing about, and you would be a fooland a communist to make one.
July 16th, 2006 at 9:48 pm
It’s a nationwide stewacide.
July 16th, 2006 at 9:50 pmThat’s hot.
July 16th, 2006 at 9:56 pmIronically, the only place that always seems immune to these extremes is SanFrancisco , as usual the temp remained in the 60s – their hottest month is IRONICALLY – SEPTEMBER
July 16th, 2006 at 9:58 pmHell hath no fury like Mother Nature scorned.
July 16th, 2006 at 10:07 pmIt topped 120 in Bullhead City, AZ, today. Probably near the top of the list–we go to Death Valley to cool down.
July 16th, 2006 at 10:10 pmPeople in Norway like the global warming.
July 16th, 2006 at 10:15 pmThe ex likes to call us during these times and say,
“It’s Africa hot!”
(Biloxi Blues)
Unfortunately, being on Cape Cod, it’s definately NOT an ‘Africa hot’ area!
July 16th, 2006 at 10:21 pmGuess it is now…
This is no hotter than it was in the dirty thirties and we diden’t have air conditioning.
July 16th, 2006 at 10:24 pmI’m really enjoying my time inside.
July 16th, 2006 at 10:29 pmDamn, can I get some of that over here? Hmm. My meteorologist friend says it will be warm later this coming week though, yeay!
July 16th, 2006 at 10:31 pmThe home AC was first available in the 1920’s and gramps had one and it survived until the 50’s when he went central – he was a veterin of the Spanish-American War (San Juan Hill and alll that stuff).
July 16th, 2006 at 10:33 pmIt’s called SUMMER
July 16th, 2006 at 10:35 pmWhen I blow one, I do it big! Again:
July 16th, 2006 at 10:37 pmThe home AC was first available in the 1920’s and gramps had one and it survived until the 50’s when he went central – he was a veteran of the Spanish-American War (San Juan Hill and all that stuff).
Margaret,
July 16th, 2006 at 10:40 pmSince when is 100 in Duluth a typical summer?
You call this hot?
-Ken Lay
July 16th, 2006 at 10:47 pmHotflash,
I didn’t have a license until I was 22, didn’t own a car until I was 25 and NEEDED it.
Public transportation is key. I grew up in the Boston area – no need for a car when there are buses (electric) and subways all around.
Now on Cape Cod, I need my damned car to go ANYWHERE!!
July 16th, 2006 at 10:48 pmThere aren’t even sidewalks here, so I can’t walk.
It drives (ha, so to speak!) me crazy, because there are better ways.
#15 – trueblue,
July 16th, 2006 at 11:07 pmDo not skew the numbers, the high in Duluth was 90 degrees F. today. When I was younger, and I and my spouse were in Cape Cod at the height of summer, we would apply cooking to the top of her black Karman Ghia and fry an egg or two in the afternoon.
This is one more reason to hate summer with a passion. Bring me winter anytime. I love it when it’s zero degrees outside, and a little nip in the air. Anything over 80 degrees, and I curse out the weatherman. F**k summer!!!
July 16th, 2006 at 11:11 pmAnd oh by the way, global warming definitely DOES exist.
July 16th, 2006 at 11:11 pmI got my tractor permit when I was 14, the tractor was a 1956 Buick Special. At that instant in time, rural living in Texas was a joy.
July 16th, 2006 at 11:14 pm#18
Did you help get Poor Charley of the MTA?
July 17th, 2006 at 12:14 am#24
Sorry, the Kingston Trio had it right–get him OFF the MTA.
July 17th, 2006 at 12:15 amI lived in Joshua Tree, California as a teen. 116 in the shade during the summer, a dry heat didn’t seem that bad…Lived in Montana several years, both extremes, real cold in the winter, real hot in the summer but great country and wonderful people.. Now I live in Washington, again and it is warming up compared to the late 60’s early 70’s when I lived here before….I had 2 huge air conditioners on my motor home, ripped them out 2 months ago, put in crank up vents and got the neighbor to put a roof over the motorhome for me. Went out and baught to little fans to use in a pinch and doing just fine….It was 85 here today, took the pup down to the lake and he loved it……..
Do you all remember my upside flag, total count to date 186 visators haven’t noticed and still only 5 that have……Sorry off topic……Nite all…Blessings, Mother earth is steaming mad at our neglect.
July 17th, 2006 at 12:21 amAll the hot air over the United States is caused by President Bush opening his mouth > He has dragon breath since he is a spawn of the devil > lol.
July 17th, 2006 at 12:49 amAnd look at San Francisco. 59 degrees. Why did I ever move?
July 17th, 2006 at 1:01 amLol post 28 > Bush has never visited San Francisco, so maybe that is why his hot air is not there?
July 17th, 2006 at 1:36 amThis is God’s wrath vested upon the United States of America for not passing a Constitutional Amendment banning gay marriages!!!
ummm….wait a minute…did you say San Francisco was cool?
July 17th, 2006 at 1:47 amLook, it’s hot, but it’s also important to point out that extreme excursions in either direction are no indicator of global warming. Just as when Rush Limbaugh yammers about how global warming is a myth because there’s three feet of snow in Manhattan, it’s equally baseless to crow about global warming when it’s hot for a few days in the height of summer.
July 17th, 2006 at 2:35 amMaybe that heat wave will park itself right over the white house for the next month…
July 17th, 2006 at 2:40 amDamn, can I get some of that over here? Hmm. My meteorologist friend says it will be warm later this coming week though, yeay!
It’s going to get alot warmer where you are headed.
July 17th, 2006 at 2:43 amI’m fifty-something and I have never seen crazy temperatures like these before.
I grew up in Michigan, and while we would have plenty of warm weather, it was never this hot and often cool and rainy, even in summer. Temps of 100 in Minnesota and the Dakotas? We would have thought it was impossible 20 years ago.
It will be interesting to see how long it takes before the economics of filling a car with gas gets to a crisis point. I drive a Mini Cooper and it cost me $40.00 to fill a 12.5 gallon tank today. While it would be great if people got rid of their gas guzzlers, higher gas prices are going to cause a lot of economic hardship too.
If only Hezbollah would kidnap Bush and Cheney.
July 17th, 2006 at 2:47 amDon’t worry folks George W. Bush said there is no Global Warming and we know Bush would never lie. Look he has allowed us to be safe and has brought world peace. He’ll go down in history as the greatest President. Now to reality Bush lies so much he doesn’t know what the word truth means. Al Gore said we have time to repair the damage we’ve done to the earth who’s listening. Bush’s new policy of invasion, torture and secret jails is now common and can be done by all countries. We are about to have World War 3 thanks to the dumbest President the US has ever had. Even Putin made Bush like the fool he is.
July 17th, 2006 at 3:16 amThermometers are “anti-christian”
July 17th, 2006 at 3:23 amMedia Helps Spin Every Attack into Anti-Iran Propaganda Its Irans fault this hot weather
July 17th, 2006 at 5:26 amIf you think of the temperature in Celsius it’s much cooler.
July 17th, 2006 at 7:23 amIt’s a ploy to turn all of us into red states…or at least rednecks.

July 17th, 2006 at 8:18 amAnd now, let’s have a standup comedian explain to us why the glaciers aren’t melting…
Paul Krugman takes us down Memory Lane in “March of Folly.â€
Below that, Bob Herbert has some particularly scathing remarks for the Bush administration and its “Marx Brothers†judicial process for detainees.
July 17th, 2006 at 8:23 amHuh, so yo are saying, that in mid to late July, the continental US is experiencing a heat wave? Wow, who could have seen that coming?
July 17th, 2006 at 8:27 amGlobal warming is real. When I was three, the snow acclimation was over my head. Now that is no longer true.
July 17th, 2006 at 8:33 amThat’s it.
I’m staying out of the kitchen.

Comment by the fly-man — July 17, 2006 @ 7:31 am
The boys that grew up with my son are in Iraq as we speak. Poor Kids. Good thing here in SE NM they got good training practicing two a days in 120 degree heat with full pads and uniforms for football all summer long. They practice like this each summer. These boys will be okay by the heat, they are used to it. But I sure hope they are okay in other ways. Glad my 21 year old hasn’t decided to go to. His friends are all there. He’s thinking about quitting college and going too. I am scared for him, but it’s his choice I suppose.
July 17th, 2006 at 9:03 amAl Gore.
July 17th, 2006 at 10:22 amThis particular heat wave is due to cow farts.
July 17th, 2006 at 10:25 amA heat wave in the summer may be usual, and no reason to think global warming would have induced it. Except for the fact that these are record temperatures… in other words this is one of the hottest years ever recorded.
Here in Denver, we reached an ALL TIME record over the weekend. It broke the last record… which was coincidentally last year.
How many years in a row will we have to break “all time high” records before it starts to become proof? I guess when its 120 degrees here in Denver people might start to finally get it. Too bad it’ll be too late by then.
July 17th, 2006 at 10:30 amWhere are all of the hurricanes at?
July 17th, 2006 at 10:56 am#52 wait until August, that’s the usual beginning of hurricane season.
My predictions: category 5 hurricanes every year, also record breaking temps every year back to back. Within 20 years I predict we’ll have a cat 6 hurricane hit us. New Orleans will be abandoned. Course, I’m not a scientist but I’m going to predict anyway!
July 17th, 2006 at 11:11 am#45 – hey Walt, when you were three you were only two feet tall. Sorry couldn’t resist that one :)
July 17th, 2006 at 11:23 amPost 52 > one potential hurricane is brewing below Cuba so be patient! In August and September the canes will go ballistic!
July 17th, 2006 at 11:38 amPost 53 > yep a super-cane of 200+ mph winds could occur this year, with 30 feet storm surge, so the city that gets hit by that big boy is obliterated!
July 17th, 2006 at 11:40 amThe thermometer outside my window in the alley read 104 on Saturday. The official high was 97, and the record for this date was 102.
It’s not so much how often the high temperature records are being broken. It’s how often the daily minimum temperatures exceed all previous records. It doesn’t cool off at night like it used to because of the greenhouse effect.
July 17th, 2006 at 12:01 pmAll I know is normally our afternoon highs here in Denver are 88-90 degrees in July and we’re reaching 100-106 degrees. It doesn’t fall down to 88 until nightfall and doesn’t drop much below that all night… so there’s very little relief from the heat. That’s still not direct proof of global warming but again, if every year we see slightly higher temps then the previous year… how long until it becomes proof? When its too hot to live here? Global warming deniers will say “its just a heat wave” every year until conditions become so RIDICULOUSLY hot that not even they will be able to dismiss it.
July 17th, 2006 at 12:13 pmWill Think Progress give me the traffic report for my local area next as well?
July 17th, 2006 at 1:56 pmWho out there is willing to take the risk that the Greenland ice plate will melt? The melting has begun.
I am! Let it melt, more clean drinking water and more land to plant trees…Finally Greenland can be Green… Why do you hate the forrest so much…LOL…
PS The debate still wages;
Sen. James Inhofe, chairman of the Senate environment committee who has called global warming “the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.”
“At the end of the day, it will all be revealed as a bad joke,” said Richard Lindzen, professor of atmospheric sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
July 17th, 2006 at 2:37 pmThere is no debate, there are only global warming deniers who continue to ignore the facts and insist that there is a debate. Take your heads out of the sand before you screw the future of everyone on this planet.
July 17th, 2006 at 5:58 pmPS
I’m sure Sen Inhofe knows more about atmospheric science then the scientists themselves!
/sarcasm
This just in: you shouldn’t trust the conclusions of senators and congressman over scientists when it comes to science! Would you listen to Mr. Inhofe if he told you that smoking was good for you, or would you listen to a doctor who warns you of cancer?
Scientists know what they’re talking about here!
July 17th, 2006 at 6:00 pmAl Gore spoke the truth in the movie I recently saw at the movie theature. Anyone who has common sence knows it is not normal to breath in Pollution into our lungs from fumes. Allergies, Ashma is on the rise in America for a reason we can’t ignore.
When greed takes over the minds of people who turn their face for the mighty dollar the outcome of (their own doing) creates their own wrath upon themselves as well as innocent people living in this earth.
Crops are dieing from the heatwaves. No food = No survival.
Trees are uprooted for lumber/houses/companies/Hwy’s. No Trees = No Oxygen
Pollution Triggers World Catastrophies: Tornadoes, Melting of the Ice, Oceans to Rise, Killing of Innocent Natural Habitats along with Animals who can’t sustain a normal environment to survive etc;
Pray that the World wakes up to the fact of what Al Gore is trying to warn mankind about.
The Writing is Around Us (Open your Eyes wide).
Thank God for people like VP Al Gore a smart man with common-sence who cares for the world the way we all should be.
July 23rd, 2006 at 6:26 pm# 66 I live in a farming community in the Tx panhandle and SOME crops are dying, but that is normal around here. also the heat arond here is not above normal in any way. Also i have not seen Al Gore’s recent movie (nor did i know anything of it before reading any of these comments) but i do agree with some of your timelines. Yea hopefully the world will see what all we are doing to the enviroment and to our world.
o ya… PS I dont think Al Gore is such a ’smart man with common sense who cares for the world the way we all should be’ he believes in abortion! which is MURDER many people other than just Al Gore have common sense…you just have to get out of big cities to actually find them
