Gingrich: ‘This Is, In Fact, World War III’ And The U.S. ‘Ought To Be Helping’

This morning on Meet the Press, Newt Gingrich argued we have entered World War III and that the United States ought to engage the effort by “helping the Lebanese government have the strength to eliminate Hezbollah as a military force.” Watch it:

As Matt Stoller points out, Gingrich was also quoted today suggesting that President Bush should be framing the current violence as World War III for the benefit of the fall elections.

Full transcript:

GINGRICH: We’re in the early stages of what I would describe as the third World War and, frankly, our bureaucracy’s not responding fast enough and we don’t have the right attitude. And this is the 58th year of the war to destroy Israel and, frankly, the Israelis have every right to insist that every single missile leave south Lebanon, and the United States ought to be helping the Lebanese government have the strength to eliminate Hezbollah as a military force — not as a political force in the parliament — but as a military force in south Lebanon.

RUSSERT: This is World War III?

GINGRICH: I believe if you take all the countries I just listed that you’ve been covering, put them on a map, look at all the different connectivity, you have to say to yourself: this is, in fact, World War III.

Well, it certainly could escalate into WWIII… Hopefully it won’t.

  6. Geoff says:

but of course, if it’s not crazy talk, we can introduce the analogy to WW 1. And if we do, me thinks the assassination of the Archduke can be linked quite nicely with the US deciding to take out Saddam. Please, tawk amongst yourselves…

  7. Jay Randal says:

Gingrich can get his fat cowardly body over to the Middle East to fight and die for Israel!

  9. DrSinker says:

Anyone else think this might be a HUGE miscalculation by the right to try and characterize this as WWIII?

I don’t think that’s something the American public will enjoy hearing. However, think about what position it puts Democrats in. Do they really want to be arguing “There’s no way this is World War III!” only to have Republicans call them “soft on terror”. See the trap?

  10. TripMaster Monkey says:

    - DrSinker:

Anyone else think this might be a HUGE miscalculation by the right to try and characterize this as WWIII?

Indeed…if you still believe that the right’s goal is to avoid conflict. However, if their goal is to foment conflict, their calculations are right on the money.

  11. DrSinker says:

    TripMaster,

I suspect it also plays to the Rapture folks. I don’t know, I’m just hoping the public at large rejects the idea wholesale for what it is: unadulterated warmongering.

  12. Seixon says:

Anyone else think this might be a HUGE miscalculation by the right to try and characterize this as WWIII?

Sure, if that’s what they’re going to attempt, although I don’t think Gingrich speaks on behalf of the whole right side of the aisle lately.

Gingrich May Run in 2008 If No Front-Runner Emerges
    By Juliet Eilperin

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) expects to run for president in 2008 if the contest for the Republican nomination still seems wide open late next year, he said yesterday.

  14. Gerald Gibson says:

I don’t think that’s something the American public will enjoy hearing. However, think about what position it puts Democrats in. Do they really want to be arguing “There’s no way this is World War III!” only to have Republicans call them “soft on terror”. See the trap?

    Comment by DrSinker

If democrats keep falling for that they are idiots. There are two types of people against world war… cowards and wisemen. By constantly acting the coward by backing from such chest thumping talk it is starting to make me believe that they are either 1) idiots that cannot articulate themselves enough to express the wisdom of avoiding war.

    OR

    2) they really are cowards that just dont want to fight unless a republican leads the way…

  15. DrSinker says:

    Gerald,

My vote woud be for the articulation side. However, a message first has to resonate with the public. I’m not certain “This is World War III” will grow legs. Of course, much depends on the extent to which things continue to escalate, but right now – I think cooler heads will prevail.

I think the question is why what we’d been told was the “War on Terror” has suddenly changed to “WWIII”. Perhaps because we don’t appear to be winning the former. New label, new game, start over???

Same for gangs, mobsters, murderers, thiefs, drug dealers, etc… there is on going crime everywhere… the difference is that most of the areas you mentioned are not one sided acts of crime…. in Israel their aggression towards their neighbors for several decades now is the root cause of their own problems and many of Americas as well… in Indonesia there are ongoing soveriegnty disputes .. Chechna same thing… And this has been the case for thousands of years… unlike one sided crime all of these people fighting for land or soverignty each have a valid complaint… and so it cannot just be wiped out, but IS at least solvable… you cant stop a individual from being a murderer by talking them into a place of acceptable agreement… but with groups of people you can…. but that is all besides the point … these are all unrelated fights that have been going on for a long time … NOT a world war… and for you to even suggest as such shows how ignorant you are.

  22. Tanna says:

I don’t know why anyone would even give the time of day to Newt Gingrich. He has been thouroughly discredited on a number of fronts besides being a serial adulterer.

  23. Briseadh na Faire says:

#19, yes. I have been wondering why the push to define this as a much broader conflict, i.e. WWIII, especially by a person on the Right who still has political aspirations.

A broader conflict increases the fear level.

A broader conflict justifies more carnage.

A broader conflict justifies imposing greater hardships, i.e. increased costs, fewer civil liberties at home.

A broader conflict justifies a draft.

A broader conflict increases the power of a War-Time President.

A broader conflict increases the profits of the War Industry.

And, 29% of the American people will blindly accept that we are, in fact, already in WWIII.

  24. dumbstruck says:

Sometime in the future Newt will either say “I told you so” or “aren’t you glad I was wrong?”

  27. fastneataverage says:

It sounds from a repug way of thinking, the right course of action. But I think the advantage to the dems is if you trumpet the WWIII horns, it will bring up the greater fear of a draft. It’s painfully obvious that we don’t have enough troops to fight in Iraq & Afghanistan, yet alone WWIII. All in all, if Newt and company play that card, they’ll lose it all.

  28. AkaDad says:

Lumping all terrorists into one label and calling it World War 3 still wont make it so…

  29. DrSinker says:

It’s painfully obvious that we don’t have enough troops to fight in Iraq & Afghanistan, yet alone WWIII.-fast

I don’t know – not sure it’s obvious to the majority. The military has been able to hit its recruiting targets, for the most part, by lowering standards. But they can always point to the numbers and say: “Look, we don’t need a draft.”

I think the reality is that where the Repubs would have us invading/attacking a bunch of these places, they just don’t have the political courage when it comes to admitting a draft would be necessary. The problem, of course, is that the Dems aren’t very good at making such a nuanced point.

Part of this is due to the trolls, but an equal part is people not understanding how to respond to them.

If you still wish to do so, I suggest focusing only on the content (if any) in the posts. The other stuff really should be obvious for what it is to any of the regulars here. If you’re really interested in discourse, hopefully you’ll become a regular.

There are other nations that have been hit by terrorist, such as the UK, Spain, Indonesia, Russia, India, etc., and I do not hear THEM claiming we are in WWIII. You mean the aggression of blowing up Saddam’s nuclear facility??? Perhaps you think it was aggressive for Israel to remove the settlers from the Gaza Strip (as they returned the Sinai Penninsula)?

Gerald, If you would pull your nose out of pro-terrorist websites and anti-Jewish websites, you might learn something and you wouldn’t sound like a neo-Nazi….

  52. Chase says:

I really don’t think anyone wants this situation to escalate, but I don’t think it’s prudent to allow terrorists and miscreants to threaten the sovereign territory of Israel. It’s not as though Hezbollah and Hamas are a knitting group of grandmothers who Israel is indiscriminately going after. Hezbollah continues to fire rockets, unguided rockets mind you, into Israeli cities with no other intention than inflicting civilian causalities and death.

If we are uncomfortable with the US supporting Israel in this conflict, what should we do?

Should the US be backing Hezbollah in this conflict?

No but it very likely that it has emboldened Israel, to be far more aggressive than necessary, due to the fact that it will be much harder for Iran to aid in protecting Syria if Israel makes good on it’s promise to attack Damascus. With Iraq under US control, what country will give them flyover rights. Also, even though Iraq and Iran were/are enemies, they would likely find a common enemy in Israel under an event like a major attack on Syria.

C’mon buddy boy… i’s not that hard to figure out is it? You’ll get it eventually.

This is from the same guy who said the people in Guantanamo didn’t have any rights under the Constitution. Seems the Supreme Court disagreed with him on that one.

The sad thing is 29% of the population will blindly buy the argument that World War III is inevitable and necessary.

  61. Briseadh na Faire says:

TripMaster, good link. but the conflict goes back way further. I did a fair amount of research a few years ago in preparation for writing an opretta on the situation. In contemporary times, it started in the early 1900’s with a Jewish immigration to Palestine using sometimes peaceful, sometimes forceful means.

What I see, and what the reasonable world sees, are state-independent organizations that are Hell bent on destroying Israel. As they are woefully outmatched in weaponry, their only viable tactic is terrorism. Detonating explosive vests in street cafes, crossing borders to kidnap soldiers, and firing unguided missiles into Israeli cities are their modus operandi.

Lebanon is too weak to effectively contain the Hezbollah militants and in Palestine, Hamas is the government.

The United States should stay on the sidelines as long as Iran stays on the sidelines. I fear the time is approaching unfortunately, where Iran becomes an active participant.

Our demonstrated weakness in Iraq has emboldened Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iran to attack our staunch and dependable ally. Those extremists believe that we are unwilling to defend the sovereignty of Israel from repeated violations by personnel and rockets.

  63. mighty aphrodite says:

#64 – MonkeyTripe cites self-laothing American prof, Noam Chomsky as a way to explain the “poor, benighted Terrorist” point of view. How sophisticated (!) – but not very original.

“What’s happening in Gaza … begins with the Hamas election, back the end of January. Israel and the United States at once announced that they were going to punish the people of Palestine for voting the wrong way in a free election. And the punishment has been severe.”
*****Hamas would not have been elected if Yasser and his crew had not plundered the take from generous donor nations. Has anybody seen the Widow AraFAT anywhere except the bank or a boutique?? No, we have NO obligation to fund a terror enterprise which has a stated goal of wiping an ally off the map. The previous prisoner exchange foolishly undertaken by Israel did not engender any warm feelings – but it did reinforce the notion that Israel had an exposed Achilles tendon ripe for the strike.

“If someone complains about the abduction of a soldier from the oppressors, point out that: If there’s a conflict going on, aside physical war, not in a military conflict going on, abduction — if soldiers are captured, they are to be treated humanely. But it is not a crime at the level of capture of civilians and bringing them across the border into your own country. That’s a serious crime. And that’s the one that’s not reported. And, in fact, remember that — I mean, I don’t have to tell you that there are constant attacks going on in Gaza, which is basically a prison, huge prison, under constant attack all the time: economic strangulation, military attack, assassinations, and so on. In comparison with that, abduction of a soldier, whatever one thinks about it, doesn’t rank high in the scale of atrocities.”

*****Prof Chump neglects to mention the eight murdered soldiers taken out by Hezbollah, the number of americans killed by Hezbollah since 1983 or the tunnel into Israel under the border with Gaza. Why confuse someone with a singular point of view with facts?

If you don’t give credence to the last article I linked to, try this one (that is, if you have the courage to challenge your preconceived assumptions).

The United States should stay on the sidelines as long as Iran stays on the sidelines.

That’s the sanest thing I’ve seen in this entire thread. It’s truly a pity your opinion doesn’t dovetail with our government’s ulterior motives.

I fear the time is approaching unfortunately, where Iran becomes an active participant.

I fear the time where Iran is accused of being an active participant…because, after all, accusation = proof for this administration.

(Side note: Hezbollah is using rockets supplied by Iran…does this make Iran an ‘active participant’? to those who would argue in the affirmative, a reminder that
Israel’s arms were supplied by the U.S. is in order…)

Our demonstrated weakness in Iraq has emboldened Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iran to attack our staunch and dependable ally.

    Two things:

    1) Iran isn’t involved yet. Please don’t jump the gun.

    2) ’staunch and dependable ally’? You do know that there has never been a treaty between Isrrael and the U.S., right?

Walt and Mearsheimer’s method of analysis presumes Israel’s guilt. Every past or present Israeli transgression is evidence of its wickedness, whereas Arab ones, if they are acknowledged at all, are “understandable.” This approach paints a highly misleading picture. It is anti-Semitic in effect if not in intent.

Zionists started it right after WWII… remember there was NO Israel for 2000 years. Rome destroyed Israel. The zionists did not just appear out of no where… they came from europe.

Now neither the zionists nor the arabs seem to have their own version of Ghandi nor MLK Jr. All they can do is call for revenge after revenge…. where are the supposed religious leaders from each side? What of the “peace makers” the christians of the world? All of them are either part of the revenge cycle or are MIA…

And America has no leader at this time … just more of the people involved in the revenge cycle.

    Humanity at its most pathetic.

  72. Briseadh na Faire says:

Gerald, the earliest emmigrants arrived shortly after WWI as I recall.

But America does have one leader at this time … a lone mother crying out against the insanity of war; someone who was hurt enough and devastated enough to no longer care about her own life, nor what others said about her, yet bold enough to hold those responsible for Bush’s War accountable.

    Comment by Briseadh na Faire

Well if you want to talk about the normal ebb and flow of jews to the area then ya jews have been there for 2000 years… but that is totally different than the massive human trafficing effort the zionists operated after WWII … it was an intentional land grab. They were even bombing the british that were the “managers” of palastine at the time…. just like the arabs do against the Israelis now…

That land grab has brought the entire world to where it is today as far the ME violence goes…

Of course they are claiming some one else threw the first stone..Not so by the new’s I have heard, but does it matter to the men, women and children that Israel has already killed…Good job, blowing up the air port so no one can escape except with US help…In the end the entire ME will be at war and the ones to benefit will be the one’s benefiting now, big business and politicians………..Blessings, we need them…Peace, we must demand it for all.

  75. Gerald Gibson says:

If this was America and someone had done the land grab to us… how long would we fight? Forever? Would we give in at somepoint and just let them have it? When will the arabs finally just give in? Never?

Lets see, bush has his hand up the dress of the Saudi prince and all these bad guys are in business with daddy bush and the Carlile group. Money changers and the best of friends. Now we throw rove into the mix, a mental defective that sees he’s loosing the war he helped make in Iraq and all the big players get nervious. What will they do about November.? Wow, you mean the UN hasn’t passed a resolution against a non-country? Wild and crazy stuff I tell you. With the UN in the tank for Israel, and other permanent members in the tank for the Palestinians, it’s quite illuminating that 65 resolutions have actually been passed against Israel at all without the US vetoing them all. The UN usually never passes resolutions holding the Palestinians accountable for anything.

Besides, your source is put out by someone named Alison Weir, and she pretends that every war involving Israel was a result of Israel attacking others, when most of us know that that’s BS. The Arab states around Israel attacked Israel after they didn’t like the UN’s decision about Israel.

Unless you are ready to shred the Constitution and live under radical Islamic rule, this is a war we must win – for ourselves and for our children. With the enemy producing videotapes and Web sites to get its message across, the meaning of this war couldn’t be clearer.

But Newt Gingrich is wrong – this is World War IV. World War III pitted the forces of freedom and democracy against communism. (We won.)

This is discussed completely in a new book: Anthony and the Magic Picture Frame. World War IV is not news to even the youngest readers of this book.

  95. Clyde the Ripper says:

During WWII we defined our enemies as the Axis and by Country. Basically, the bad guys were the Germans, Italians, Japanese, and a few French. We had sense enough to beat the enemy first and then sort out the good bad guys from the bad bad guys. It wasn’t always right nor always nice but it was effective and probably the best way. We may be in WWII or IV now but everybody is trying to sort out the good bad guys from the bad bad guys using the Bushco standard of who has the most oil before beating the enemy. The enemy in this case comprises what has been classified for all my life time as the Arab nations and the natural enemies of the Jews for several thousand years. If we are indeed in WWIII or IV it is counter-productive and not in the best interests of we true Americans, discounting the greed of the Bushco, to be selective of the enemies before we win the war. The only way to win the war on “terrorism” is to call it what it is, a war against Arabs, and act accordingly. Attack every Arab Country that does not agree to a complete unilateral surrender and dispose of all those “terrorists” before the sorting is done. The mess in the Middle East will go on forever unless there are only Arabs or only Jews. Neither of the two sides will play by our rules unless we adopt the only rule that DUHbya recognizes: “Play ball with me or I will shove the bat up your ass.” If we are not prepared to win this war then we should get the farr out of there and let those left annihilate each other and then deal with the winner.

What? So, Palestinians attacked Israel, an unformed jewish state back 1948 and control jewish waters, jewish salaries, jewish supplies, jewish way of living, jewish transportation lines and decide whether jewishs are terrorists or not? This guy is full of shit.

Appeasement didn’t work to limit the rush to have nuclear devices under Clinton (they just did it in secret) and it wont work now. These people only understand a show of force; it is the nature of their religion and their culture. Newt was right about this. I agree that bush didn’t handle Iraq in the best manor but at least he handled it. If the terrorist saw a unified USA and didn’t see the shit pumped out by the CNN’s of the media every day they might not feel so emboldened. Take note it is WWIII but it is a new kind of war one without uniforms and use of proper rules of engagement.

It’s time to bring the troops home, and if the Republicans want all this war and hate spread across the world, let them do the fighting. America is sick of it and we know the game. Now are they going to say we have to help Isreal. I feel it’s all part of a plan. Every bit of it. It’s time to IMPEACH before there is no world.

  106. Clyde the Ripper says:

    #109 Piper

I think that is what I said! At least I agree with you.

To put it in the vernacular, just plain and simple, “we need to shit or get off the pot,” and either choice entails having the Bushco in the pot before we flush.

  107. Christopher says:

    Lora,

I thought that wife was dying. Maybe she lived for awhile. I hope she did. The fact is that this man has serious psychological problems, and those problems, in a normal world, would keep him from running for president. And, as so many have said, let Newt and the other warmongers go fight in the wars they dream. Please, no more poor kids from small towns with no decent job prospects. Also, please note that these war-obsessed politicos are all Christian. What does this mean?

  108. Mr. Evil says:

In my opinion, Israel does what it does because the U.S. always has their back. Israel could deliberately bomb a school and the official U.S. response would be something like, ‘it was actually a terrorist camp’.

I could give a shit about Israel because as far as I’m concerned they’ve completely abused the gift that was given them. A homeland. A great many of the early Jewish refugees went from country to country on ships trying to find someone to take them in. No one wanted them. So the United Nations (resolution 181) decided to carve out a chunk of Palestine and gave it to them. Of course they’ve been attacked by and have attacked the Arabs in all surrounding areas since. For nearly 60 years they haven’t figured out how to talk to each other like adults. Blinded by religion and the thinking that their religious history entitles them to that land or any land with no exceptions. And the U.S. government backs them at all costs because there are some who believe that they will be granted some special dispensation from God if Israel is protected. Crazy? No crazier than killing for your god when your god specifically forbids you to kill. Religions are the root of all the conflicts in the middle east and pretty much everywhere else (with the exception of where oil is involved, in which case it’s just pure greed).

Those people over there need to wake up and decide what kind of world they want just as we do. Because if they don’t very soon, their conflict will eventually spread like a fast growing cancer and become a thorn in everyone’s side. They never accomplish anything. They always revert to tit-for-tat attacks. Childish and infantile. There are actually a great many people that want this violence to increase so as to help facilitate the fulfillment of some weird interpretation of biblical prophecy. Just because some frightened old men wrote a load of stories about 2000 years ago doesn’t make them true or absolute. People can change anything they want. Us, them, anyone, anywhere, anytime. You just have to choose to make that choice.

  117. Piper says:

The charismatic black leader Jean-Bertrand Aristide was elected president in 1991, but was deposed in a coup shortly after. There followed three years of brutal control by a military junta, before an American invasion in 1994 returned Aristide to power. One of the first acts of the re-installed government of Aristide was to disband the army, to great popular acclaim.

Aristide was succeeded by a close ally and former prime minister, René Préval, in 1996. While Aristide was the first democratically elected president in Haitian history, Préval’s administration was most notable for the fact that he was the first person in Haiti’s history to be elected president and to serve his complete term, leaving office voluntary at the prescribed time. Every previous president had either died in office, been assassinated, been deposed, overstayed his prescribed term, or been installed by a foreign power.

Aristide returned to office in 2001 after elections that were boycotted by many of his opponents, who accused his party, Fanmi Lavalas, of counting votes improperly in a previous senatorial election, as well as threatening critics. Aristide denied the charges and accused his opponents of accepting U.S. assistance, and plotting to overthrow his government. The opposition mostly denied this, but many of its members continually called for his early resignation.

In February 2004, the Aristide government was overthrown by armed rebels. These rebels were led by disenchanted urban gangs formerly working for Fanmi Lavalas and demobilized soldiers. All of these armed opponents were alleged to be allied with the political opposition. As Aristide departed the country, many members of his government fled or went into hiding, and the United States again sent Marines into Port-au-Prince. After Aristide’s departure, Supreme Court Chief Justice Boniface Alexandre succeeded to the presidency appointed by a council of elders and supported by the United States, Canada, and France.

Elections were held in February 2006, and René Préval was again elected president.

Sounds like the system worked to me!

The 2nd coup against him in 2004 was funded and directed by the Bush Administration > the rebels were outfitted in the Dominican Republic, then slipped across the border into Haiti! Aristide against his will was flown out of the country to Africa by our CIA! The Latortue/Alexandre government were stooges! Rene Preval was elected this past February, but Aristide never actually abdicated the presidency, even though he has agreed from exile that Preval has replaced him!

  123. Doodle Bug says:

    Bush escalates the hate

U.S. President George W. Bush, who is currently in Saint Petersburg for the G8 summit, refused to ask Israel to stop attacks on Lebanon, saying on Sunday: “Our message to Israel is defend yourself, but be mindful of the consequences, so we are urging restraint.”

While most countries are appealing for a truce and have accused Israel of disproportionate use of force after the abduction of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah on Wednesday, such a statement by Bush and his like-minded envoy to the UN, John Bolton, who blocked a Security Council resolution against the attack on Lebanon on Friday, leaves little doubt that the U.S. is an accomplice in the attack and could care less about the tragedy unfolding in Lebanon, which has barely emerged from the Israeli-instigated civil war and occupation.

The U.S. blocked the UN Security Council resolution despite the fact that Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora talked to Bush on the phone on Thursday, asking him to put pressure on Israel to stop the savage attacks on the tiny state.

If Bush would have seen with his eyes how eighteen civilians, including nine children, were burnt alive in a helicopter gunship attack, would he have again said that Israel has the “right to defend itself”? If so, then God should have mercy on us all. In Saint Petersburg, Condoleezza Rice also rejected calls for a truce, saying not addressing the underlying causes of the conflict might make things worse.

This is not a new war and has been going on forever. However, this is a war on terrorism as well as an attack on one of our allies. So how should the U.S. react? Should we leave Israel to twist in the wind on their own or do we stand with an ally who is under attack? Your first arguement is very disturbing, because you make it sound like a good thing they stole land. Your second arguement makes the palestinians sound greedy, when in actuality, they are asking for the land THAT WAS STOLEN FROM THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE, and Israel wont give compromise on certain things ever, don’t put half the story. Have you ever heard of the Saudi Peace Plan? the PLO Signed it, Israel didn’t, so don’t twist that. Oh, and if you think Israel removed its residents from Gaza out of the goodness of their heart.. well it just goes to show how corrupted some people are, because they maintained air raids over it, and now tanks are pushing far into the territory. This is a genocidal preconceived plan that was quite visible to me from the start, to be honest.. You say such things are pro-terrorist, but I wonder if we had the same technology 400 years ago, would we call the Native Americans terrorists and the colonists in the right? Well.. I know some would.

    Comment by Chase — July 16, 2006 @ 5:15 pm

“sovereign territory of Israel”? You know, you can say it looks like a chocolate bar, but unless you have a clear nose, you can’t deny or confirm what you’re smelling isn’t really shit. Most of Israel’s land (not counting the 1947 partition) Is STOLEN from Palestine! Sovereign territory indeed. You point out what Hizbollah is doing, but I think you’ve forgotten to mention about Israel’s doings.. funny how discrimination can change the entire feel of a story. Israel fired the first rockets, Hizbollah retaliated. Don’t try to tell me otherwise, Ive been with it on 4 different channels since the start , as well as contacts from Lebanon, and While Hizbollah has shot down a plane, a tank, and a ship (a Trifecta, if you will) All Israel has to show for it are over 200 civilians dead. Hizbollah has done their best, at least, to target military, but Israel is flattening all buildings in sight and knocking out water and electric plants. Surely even YOU can’t tell me you had no knowledge about that, its been on CNN, for god sake. It seems Israel is the one “with no other intention than inflicting civilian causalities and death.”, not the other way around. Israel is trying to strike fear into Lebanon… and failing, by the way.

#64 – That’s a wonderful conspiracy theory – I’d put it right up there with the Grassy Knoll.

I also give it about as much credibility.

    Comment by Chase — July 16, 2006 @ 6:05 pm
If they are outmatched, its only because they get everything from the U.S. You make it sound as the level on some aspects of their abilities to wage war mean.. you know, i’ve never really understood the logic that just because a side doesn’t have as advanced retalitory methods, they shouldn’t retaliate at all or get branded with some BS label, like they shouldn’t do anything at all. You obviously are ignorant of Israel’s methods with Palestinians and in the past, Lebanon. There you go again with only half the story. The half that they want you to hear. I highly doubt that it really is terrorism by the definition in any case. Repeated violations toward an illegal state, lol..

…. Why do you love Israel so much? What have they really done for the US? What good have they ever done in the world? All they’ve ever brought to mankind is suffering. Bulldozing of homes, Massacre of civilians, Destruction and Deprival of essential resources, curfews to try and starve the people… All they are is sadistic, and if everyone knew the truth in America, I bet the 29% would be alot lower..

Because that shows a singular point of view regarding the facts… Wasn’t 1983 that year where a bunch of Israelis and Lebanese Christian troops massacred Palestinian civilians? I won’t say the fact you brought up is wrong, but you overlook EVERYTHING that is israel’s responsibility, and instigation… what Hizbollah did is so mild by comparison its nonexistant

World War III Is Not News: But Doing What It Takes To Win Would Be

“The Lesson of World War II Has Been Forgotten,” Warns Twelve-year-old Anthony in New American History Book

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich recently described 9/11, the conflict in the Middle East, and the trouble with North Korea and Iran, as the “beginnings of World War III.” But that’s not news to any twelve-year-old who has read a new, and unique, American history book: Anthony and the Magic Picture Frame, by Michael S. Class.

In the book, Anthony, the author’s real-life son, travels through time to witness the seminal events of the twentieth century: Anthony meets the heroes of America’s past. Class uses advanced digital photography to place Anthony in real historical photographs of Charles Lindbergh, Neil Armstrong, Thomas Edison, Jonas Salk, FDR, Lou Gehrig, Audie Murphy, and soldiers on Normandy beach on D-Day. Anthony’s conversations with the heroes of the past are based on things they really said, all properly footnoted. The Web site, http://www.MagicPictureFrame.com, displays some of the book’s amazing photographs.

“I wanted to capture the interest of today’s kids,” says Class, “by turning American history into a grand time travel adventure – with a moral lesson. This is a history book with a message for the present day.”

At the close of World War II, Anthony reflects on all that he has seen. “I felt a deep shame for humanity as a whole,” he says, “but I couldn’t help thinking that all the horrors I had seen during this war were somehow connected – that the thirty-six million dead, the Death Camps in Europe, and the dropping of two atomic bombs were all part of the shameful price for not stopping evil early enough. It’s a lesson that has been forgotten. In my time, evil is the cause of a new World War. And, once again, it’s an evil that was ignored and allowed to grow stronger.”

“Anthony is referring to the War on Terrorism,” says Class. “The War on Terrorism pits the forces of freedom and democracy against the forces of radical Islamic tyranny. Anthony sees the new World War begin on 9/11 – the date the war came to America’s shores, the date I decided to write the book, and the date that Anthony steps through the Magic Picture Frame and into America’s past.”

Anthony travels back in time so that young readers can see their modern world in the light of the lessons of the past. Anthony compares the people and events of the past with the people and events of his own time.

“In the new World War,” says Anthony in a comparison to World War II, “the forces of good clearly have the power to prevail over the forces of evil – it’s only the will to do what is necessary to win that is in doubt. People demand endless negotiation with the Hitlers of my time, limited responses to brutal attacks, and quick exits from the fields of battle. They seem to be angry that their daily routine has been disrupted, not that the foes of freedom are on the march. And the men and women who risk the supreme sacrifice to fight for what is right? They are less appreciated, and even mocked.”

“It’s not an easy book,” says Class, “but our children are not living in an easy time. Anthony discusses the nature of good and evil, right and wrong, war and peace, what it means to be an American, honor and discipline, success and achievement, courage and destiny, marriage and family, God and purpose.”

And that is where Class offers hope to his young readers. From his discussions with America’s heroes, Anthony learns that “the purpose of life is to live a life of purpose, one person really can make a difference, and doing the right thing always matters.”

Every chapter of the book carries that inspiring message. The chapter about Lindbergh’s flight is really about choosing one’s destiny. The story of Lou Gehrig is one of a virtuous life. The chapter about Thomas Edison is really about the benefits of hard work. The story of Apollo 11 is about wonder, taking risks, and courage. The story of Dr. Jonas Salk and the cure for polio is really about dedicating one’s life to a higher purpose. When Anthony meets his immigrant great-grandfather at Ellis Island in 1907, it’s really a story about what it means to be an American. Anthony’s observation of D-Day and the liberation of the death camps during the Holocaust is a testament to the reality of evil and the need to fight it.

A quote from British philosopher Edmund Burke opens the chapter on World War II: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

Says Class: “Let’s raise good men and women who will resolve to take action in the face of evil.”

The New World War is discussed on the author’s blog: THE NEW WORLD WAR – What It Is And Why We Must Win (www.MagicPictureFrame.blogspot.com).

Anthony and the Magic Picture Frame was named Outstanding Book of the Year and Most Original Concept of 2006 by Independent Publisher, Reviewers Choice by Midwest Book Review, and Editor’s Pick by Homefires: The Journal of Homeschooling Online. Nationally syndicated talk-show host Michael Medved calls the book “entertaining and educational.” Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin says “parents and teachers will appreciate the inspiring message this unique history book holds for America’s next generation. I recommend this book to all young Americans, may they take us to the stars and beyond.”

Anthony and the Magic Picture Frame (hardcover, 225 pages, $35) is available at http://www.MagicPictureFrame.com, by calling toll-free 1-800-247-6553, at select bookstores, and on http://www.amazon.com.

Anthony and the Magic Picture Frame includes built-in tools for parents and teachers: recommendations for hundreds of books, movies, songs, and places to visit, keyed to the subjects of each chapter. The author’s Web site includes a fun final exam; the author’s blog is a place for readers to discuss the book’s moral lessons (www.MagicPictureFrame.blogspot.com).

The below are some “ideas” from the blog below. There are debates going on both on the blogs
and internally within the administration as to what is the “best” strategy in handling this situation.
Some are for “diplomacy” and attempting to work out a “compromise.” Others, view this as
similiar to the beginnings of WWII and that any attempts at “compromise” could be mis-interpreted
as “weakness” and cause extreme consequences. There is probably a middle ground position
and other positions also. It appears that the current situation seems to be a wait and see approach with some diplomacy and seeking the active alliances with other nations, perhaps a United Nations involvement at some point. I don’t have the answers but I am attempting to “educate” myself as a “good citizen.” America does view Israel as a good ally and will not abandon them. My understandings of this situation are limited. I don’t think Israel can allow themselves to be continually attacked by terrorists in neighboring countries and the neighboring countries – governments – have a moral duty to control or do something about the terrorists attacking Israel. The failure to control the terrorists will force Israel to defend itself or to control the terrorists.

Again my understandings of this situation are limited. I am for America’s interests. I believe it is in America’s interests to support our “allies” and our “friends” and I believe that a “nations word is its bond.” A man or womans word is their bond. A commitment from America is valuable and we will not abandon our friends. Israel is our friend. Terrorists attacking Israel are attacking America.

My understanding of this situation is limited.

    Sincerely
    Glen R. Graham, Tulsa, Oklahoma

This is certainly the beginning of WWIII. It began with the War on Terror, then the War in Iraq. Now it’s moved to Lebanon and Israel. The next phase will be countries taking sides, alliances broken, and cease-fires abandoned.

  163. American Internationalist says:

Israel is committing an egregious tactical blunder in its handling of Lebanon. The U.S. Government and the U.S. Media is doing us all a disservice by taking the easy way out.

By focusing on who’s to blame for this crisis and insisting on calling the Lebanese to account for Hezbollah’s actions, we conveniently overlook the fact that the savagery of Israel’s disproportionate attack on the Lebanese people is consolidating support against Israel and the U.S. in the hearts and minds of people the world over.

Remember: the Nazis were convinced that they could weaken the morale of the English people by bombing British civilian targets in preparation for a land invasion. Instead, they united the resolve of British and American hearts and minds to destroy Nazi Germany.

Now I’m not suggesting that terrorists could destroy Israel or the United States the way we destroyed the Nazis. But Israel’s current actions and American inaction are only serving to strengthen the enemy’s base of support while eroding our moral authority.

What can be done? Gingrich’s proposal to lend American military support to the Lebanese army at this point is the only option that has the potential to resolve this situation in a way that avoids further conflagration. Adding in significant development aid would lend some legitimacy to our values. The sad thing is that given this Administration’s record, this kind of thinking is likely to find few supporters in the Bush White House.

What is the lesson to be learned from World War II? If you live in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, or Washington D.C., maybe it’s time to follow on the heels of sensible German and Italian immigrants in World War II. Foreseeing the shortcomings of their fascist governments, they voted with their feet by moving to a less bellicose country and prospering. Brazil and Chile come to mind.

But if you’re one of those folks who get excited by the prospect of World War III, things are looking good. Just remember to brace for the punch back.

“What is certain is that Hezbollah’s step and that taken by Hamas before it, lacks political wisdom,” recently wrote the Saudi journalist Dawood al-Shiryan in the pan-Arab newspaper Al Hayat. “But to insist on calling the resistance to account for this mistake now that Israel’s violent response has been launched has created a political reality that is difficult to describe.”

He said he agreed with the description by David Beamer, whose son Todd died in the crash, in a Wall Street Journal commentary last month the act was “our first successful counter-attack in our homeland in this new global war – World War III”. Mr Bush said: “I believe that. I believe that it was the first counter-attack to World War III.”

Many politicians, world leaders and pundits were saying WW III started when Desert Storm began. The prez has consistently said the War on Terrorism will be a protracted effort, similar to the decades spent on winning the Cold War–including its many hot spots.

The term WW III connotates a banding together of nations, like that of WW II, to fight an enemy nation. If that’s true, where will this band come from, and what nation will be fought? The U.S. basically went to war in Iraq alone. With the exception of the Brits, the coalition was a real laugher. There is no oragnized enemy–only disjointed bands of terrorists around the world. Granted, Iran and North Korea back terrorism. But, our decimated military does not have the capability to carry the fight to either of them–especailly while we are bogged down in Iraq. Without allies, the U.S. can do little but rattle its saber in response to their shenanaigans.

This thing is really comparable to the religious crusades of the dark ages. The U.S. needs to attack the concept–extreme religious thought–not individual terrorist organizations. These guys actually relish a violent death. If the supply of warped minds were eliminated, the threat could be lessened tremendously. But, reversing their thought processes will not be easy. Maybe that’s why W has said the effort will take years to accomplish.

  172. get it right says:

What part of the War on INTERNATIONAL Terrorism didn’t you get? That is a World War.
Its not just 3 Mideast countries. Its in Asia, Europe and the Americas. When terror groups become part of national governments they cannot act as before without drawing THEIR COUNTRY into conflict. When HAMAS and HEZBALLAH attack now, its the same as Lebanon and Palestine declaring war. Too bad if Isreal sees it that way. Why should Isreal have to put up with constant attacks. We don’t. If Mexico suddenly started lobbing missiles into Texas, we would shortly thereafter own Northern Mexico. Death and destruction is horrible, especially of innocents. Tell that to Hezballah that places most of their military in civilian areas, even woven into the fabric of the neighborhood, using innocents as civilians. Of course this is World War 3. If you want the “cycle of violence” to stop, the corrupt arab countries should help their own people and should stop wasting their lives shooting at Isreal. If the paletinians had partnered with Isreal in 1948, it would be as prosperous as Isreal. Oh, wait, the surrounding Arab countries can’t have prosperous Palestinians. It might make their own countries look bad.

  173. Terrence Deagle says:

Sure, this is the beginning of World War III. It’s just taking a little longer because man has learned how to contain war a little better although we can’t stop it from happening. Most people want to bury their head in the sand like an ostrich. Go ahead and be stupid. What will take for the western countries to wake up that this is another Crusade and that History is repeating itself?

  174. BAHADIR says:

YES IT IS BEGINNING OF IT,ATTACK SURIA AND IRAN THEN YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU WANT 3 RD WORLD WAR BUT WHO WILL LOOSE I CAN SEE THAT BUT I AM NOT SURE AMERICAN JEWS CAN SEE THAT.
IRAQ WAS THE EASY TARGET FOR YOU,THE DEEP INSIDE THERE MUST BE SOME AMERICANS WHO ARE NOT JEW MUST PROTECT THEIR COUNTRY,YOU ARE GOING WITH THEM TO MUD.
THE PEOPLE WHO THINKS THEY COULD ATTACK IRAN AND SURIA ,AND OTHER WORLD POWERS DO NOTHING ABOUT IT ,(LIKE RUSSIA TURKS CHINA )ARE REALLY MAKING A BIG MISTAKE.I CAN NOT LOUGH BECAUSE IT IS COMING…BUT WHO WILL LOOSE!

  175. Ben says:

I believ WWIII is necessary – the world needs to be brought back into balance – and war is unfortunately the key.

  176. xpowderx says:

GEEZE, talk about people who have nothing less than to make a possible scenario political. Is that all you libs know how to do. Frankly I care less about the political aspirations or downfall you guys just want to make happen. I honestly think Newt is on to something this time. Lots of stuff happening and due to political blindness most of you that comment are ignoring it for a agenda.

    Wake up!!

  177. xpowderx says:

Ohh, by the way, the more days that pass the worse the situation is becoming. And I agree with some of the posters here. It is something we cannot really stop from happening. This war is not over land, politics or a agenda. This war is over a mindset.
AND THERE IS NO GRAY AREA this time around! Its being fought for keeps.

    SO WAKE UP!!

  178. Matthew says:

Look at this imbecile! He is actually calling for World War Three! Does he want the Northern Hemisphere to become a nuclear waste zone? Someone needs to arrest these people. They’ve gotten out of control. The administrations of the USA and Israel are out of their minds.

  179. Estanley says:

When it was WWI, everyone knew it. When it was WWII, everyone defineitely knew it, you didn’t havfe to tell them. Now this jerk-off is telling us we are in a world war? Draft Gingrich as a GI and let hi fight his war.

  180. Estanley says:

However, I think that Newt’s idea to lend military support to a legitimate Lebanese army is a good one.

  181. Jack’s Newswatch says:

[...] There’s a lot of talk about whether or not we are in the middle of World War III. That’s what Newt Gingrich calls the worldwide “War on Terror”, as do others. Going one step further, Norman Podhoretz mimics James Woolsey’s lead by referring to it as World War IV, and agrees with the Project for the New American Century that the Cold War was effectively the real number III. This would be taking a broader view of things alright, but I still think they both come up short on the big picture, and end up stuck in their confined and present day, non-historical perspective. [...]

  182. James says:

Newt Gingrich and the rest of the US Administration are war mongers!!! War is good for the US/UK economy but means more innocent dead people!!! Welcome to the civilised western hemisphere. Sure – you can win the hearts and minds of the muslim world – just kill innocent civilians like in lebanon, palestine, afghanistan, iraq …. God damn it – when will anyone not realise that these power hungry neo-cons are going to destroy the US!!! I plead to the good people of the US – dont vote, stop watching CNN, ABC and Fox News and stop paying taxes. You cant spread democracy by pointing a gun down someones throat – if this is the kind of approach then why do you think muslims are not going to hate the US? Why are the US/UK still in Iraq and Afghanistan? Ask yourself why? Bush said the mission was accomplished a long time back yet they are still there – why? We need to get rid of the neo-cons, put them all though a war crimes tribunal and bring back true and proper governance to the USA/UK. We need to work with other civilisations in harmony and peace. Its time to get rid of WMD’s in the US/UK/Israel as well as India/Pakistan/Iran etc. Give power to the people and less to governments. Peace to all mankind.

  183. Lenard says:

I don’t know what history books you guys are reading — especially Estanley — but Americans were VERY late to recognize the impending threat of both WWI and WWII and GOD only knows how many lives would have been SAVED if we had gotten involved earlier! Islamic Fascist declared war against us over 30 years ago and you guys think it started 5 years ago! How sad that so many MORE people must die because so few realize we are at war.

  184. RO says:

Where is the United Nations when you need them? When will the U.N. get the backing that it should have without any favoritism involved but all of the world behind it?

  185. Dalvin says:

Well World War 3 is about to hit full ignition. its been going on for a while now but thanks to america, britan, and isreal we are going to establish a new world order very soon, its actually in the process now. This year is the begining of all things to end. *Heil Bush*

  186. William K. Wolfrum » Blog Archive » Why Newt Gingrich needs to run for President in 2008 says:

[...] 4. Thinks we’re in the middle of World War III and will happily bomb anyone to prove to the neo-cons that he’s one of them. [...]

  187. Jay Goldstein says:

Guys, don’t get me wrong… I am a big time democrat however it seems like there is a lot of anti-semitic remarks going on here… Many of the post above say that Israel has been aggressive towards her neighbors for all her existence… Lets not forget about the 7 day war where Israel was invaded and survived by wiping out the other countries air forces first. Lets not forget the 1948 war or the Yom Kippur was where Israel was invaded… Also lets not forget how the government of Iran keeps threatning to wipe Israel off the planet.
