Today, the Washington Times reports Israel is in a good position right now to take out Iran’s nuclear sites:
Israel is in the best position militarily in its history to mount air strikes against Iran, after a decade of buying U.S.-produced long-range aircraft, penetrating bombs and aerial refueling tankers. […] “They have the capability to strike Iran,” said retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas G. McInerney, a former fighter pilot who has trained with Israelis. [...] “I’m not worried about them hitting the targets. They will suffer losses, but they are capable of doing it.”
It doesn’t matter how much advanced weaponry they have. As Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and others have pointed out, conducting air strikes against Iran is “not a viable, feasible, responsible option.” Newsweek pointed out the dangers of such a strike earlier this year:
The Israelis admit they can only disable the Iranian program, not destroy it. “The real question is what you achieve if the best you can do is to delay the project for a few years,” says a senior U.S. administration official, speaking anonymously because it’s a sensitive topic. The cost to the region’s stability could be devastating.
American Progress nonproliferation expert Joe Cirincione has even warned that such a strike “would not, as is often said, delay the Iranian program. It would almost certainly speed it up. That is what happened when the Israelis struck at the Iraq program in 1981.â€

July 18th, 2006 at 4:59 pmI was shocked to read George Will’s piece today critisizing the neocons who clamor for still more war. I still only like the guy when he writes about the Cubs, but I have to admit some satisfaction at seeing him tear the reichtwing a new one on national print media.
July 18th, 2006 at 5:00 pmSince when does the United States of America even consider preemptive and illegal acts of war against other sovereign nations? Oh wait… Right.

July 18th, 2006 at 5:19 pmGary:
Two problems with this:
1) Please define ‘Iran’s nuke sites’. You’re making it sound like Iran has nuclear-tipped missiles ready to go, which I believe is fallacious.
2) False Dilemma: Having made the assumption of ‘Iran’s nuke sites’, you go on to make the assumption that they must be ‘gotten rid of’.
Please correct those two errors before you continue.

I would think that to take out Iran’s “nuke sites” you would have to mount a “suprise” attack. The traitorious Washington Times has effectively removed that element of surprise. What shitbags they are
July 18th, 2006 at 5:36 pmthe only problem, is that the Isreali’s would need to get flyover permission from Either Jordan, Syria, Turkey ,or Saudi Arabia. Not a huge chance of that happening, or be able to refuel, while their planes fly south and then back north. Don’t forget that Iran has a its own airforce, and could go after any tankers hanging out in international waters. I suppose they could use US bases in Iraq, Kuwait, or possibly Deigo Garcie, however a US decision to allow Isreal to use US assets while attacking Iran, will lead to further conflict in the middle east.
July 18th, 2006 at 5:37 pmGuys, ISRAEL has been recommending the U.S. against attacking Iran. Let everyone encourage Israel all they want, but the fact is they’ll act as they want.

July 18th, 2006 at 5:38 pmWhat is with all this war talk? Haven’t enough people died yet? Yeah, go ahead Isreal, attack Iran with 120,000 American troops stuck in Iraq and the US will be scrambling with helicopters pulling our troops off rooftops reminicent of the VietNam pullout. And those troops that don’t make it to the helicopters in time, well, too bad, too sad. These war happy people should be locked up and gagged. And the “liberal” media is worse for giving air time/column time to these crazy war mongers. Where’s the reporting the peace talks? Shouldn’t we be working toward a cease-fire?
The Iraq war is going to cost Republicans seats in Congress this fall, particularly, moderate Republicans. After November 7, a moderate Republican will be a thing of the past. More war will NOT save the Republican party. We don’t need any more troops coming back with….

Wanna know something else jim?
Among the Iraqi material sent to Sudan were said to be approximately 27.5 pounds of 93% U-235 which had been originally supplied to Iraq by France for use in the French-built Osiraq research reactor. However, it is claimed that the bulk of the nuclear materials was shipped forward to the Algerian reactor in Ain-Oussera — a PRC-built reactor with military/weapons development capacity. Algeria is said to still be storing the Iraqi nuclear equipment and radioactive materials.
See Jim we need to nuke the french and the algerians.

Israel has people kidnapped on their soil and taken into no persons land in lebanon. the hiz and herbolla have admitted it on teevee so it must be true, then rockets red glare, bombs bursting in air.
the region is completely unstable, except in Israel, wonder how that could be? wish they could all get along, but none of the oil rich nations mentioned above is interested in giving anything more then weapons to the fighters willing to attempt to kill israel. no money to help the people to live a better life. hell no, that would make them consider having a real life, vs. that of constant war. i have great reverance with iran having nukes. then i wonder if it is hypocrisy? the biggest terrorist right now and grave threat to mankind is USA and israel and we have more nukes than countries to fire them on. for not a minute do i have faith in gorgy porgy not using ours. so why is it ok for one dictator or(rogue leader) can have nukes and another can’t. and i am referring to bushwhack as a dictator, call it as i see it. are they unstable due to f up policies in the middle east? that would be my educated guess. i like to put it with the analogy as if you chain a dog up and beat it once you let that dog go he is going to do a moch 10 and tear your ass up. we have been misusing the muslims since the beginning of time. and now that they are NOT allowing the usa call the shots we have to go beat them up. this is what happens when you are a bully. THEY ARE TIRED AND I DON’T BLAME EM.
July 18th, 2006 at 8:28 pmDon’t forget: neither the US nor Israel actually knows where their facilities are.
July 18th, 2006 at 9:13 pmJIM:
All other things being equal, I would just as soon Iran not have nukes.
1. They don’t currently have them.
2. The facilities for producing nuclear power are widely scattered and some, at least, are underground. No nice easy targets. Kill lots of civilians if you bomb them.
3. Said facilities are currently more suitable to producing peaceful uses of nuclear energy. They could certainly be converted to making weapons but this would take some time.
4. Allowing Iran nuclear power for peaceful uses and not threatening them are much more likely to be successful, with some sort of inspections. But if we really insist on inspections, they should be in ALL nations, including us.
5. There is a huge group of young Iranis that like Western civilization perks. They have Internet cafes and are quite savvy. They aren’t interested in living under a repressive theocratic regime. Let’s be cool and let this happen. If we continue to threaten them, or God forbid, invade them, we can kiss goodbye any chance of peaceful relations for at least a couple of generations, and we will GUARANTEE the continuance of a theocratic regime, and that they develop nukes.
6. If they do develop nukes, they won’t actually use them. They aren’t that crazy. We can turn them into glass and they know it. Of course, if we turned them to glass, we’d better be prepared for fallout, both nuclear and political.
Chill, man. That Iran MIGHT develop nukes is not that much of a threat in the big scheme of things. And we absolutely CANNOT invade another country on spec!!!
July 18th, 2006 at 10:09 pmJIM bought the american idea that he has some higher moral quality to decide what country should or should not have WMD. He has the moral quality to call insurgent fighters “terrorists”. He has the moral quality to say Israel is entitled to attack civilians while looking for Hezbollah leaders. He has the moral quality to state Iran is unestable and lead by a mad fundamentalist, it doesnt matter Bush is far worse cause he is one of “us”, an american (whatever that means to him). In summary, he is full of shit and he is scared to death. Fear = Violence.
July 18th, 2006 at 10:28 pmDan Liberman, the Israeli Ambassador to the UN just stated on CNN that Israel’s intention is to liberate the Lebanese people from Hezbollah. When one state misinterprets is own state sponsored terror as liberation a.k.a Iraq style it should hardly shock the senses over the impunity by which Bushco has grated the Israelis full permission to use the Lebanese people as mere obstacles whose lives are worth so little to anyone in Washington, Democrats included. Most Democrats are indistinguishable from Necons when it comes to Israeli state sponsored terror, they line up on news stations to praise Israel for its measured response. Who can stop the slaughter, or the question should be who wants to stop the slaughter of Lebanese civilians? Hezbollah should be wiped off the face of the earth, but this can only be accomplished when you take away the endless recruits of militants Hezbollah and Hamas leaders have to their disposal. This can only be accomplished when Israel returns to its pre 1967 boarders.
Back to Iran, I am so mad about the Lebanese slaughter that I find myself asking, is anyone going to intervene on their behalf? Iran?? Well so be it. Israel will learn the same lesson Bushco found out in Iraq, that war is not a tool which one state can control at will and unfortunately it will most likely come back to haunt them.
July 18th, 2006 at 10:51 pm“Al-Arabiya is reporting that Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal just made nice to Iran in a press conference, saying that Saudi Arabia never meant to imply that Iran was intervening in Lebanese affairs and if they had it was all to the good. He said that he was now in continuous contact with the Iranians and that they were working together in the interests of the Lebanese people.”

July 18th, 2006 at 11:07 pmI was born in 1962. I spent the first 30 years of my life fearing a nuclear holocaust. Once the soviet union collapsed I thought we (mankind) stood a good chance of reaching our potential. That was a nice thought, a little naive though. There were too many people with too much war profits to gain from. Now I fear mankind is on the verge of destroying ourselves again.

July 19th, 2006 at 12:12 amWhen confronted with Israel’s attack on Lebanon, President Bush said that every nation has the right to defend itself. Of course, this does not apply to Palestine, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon or North Korea. Bush wants the chaos in the world no matter how many innocent lives are lost. Israel has been given weapons and money by the United States but don’t let any country give Lebanon anything to protect their country. I knew once Bush broke the international laws another country would do the same. Now any country can invade another country by just thinking something might happen in the future. Well, in fact, this american attitude against other countries is far from new, though preemptive war doctrine is born with BUsh. However, under the most ridiculous excuses US has invaded dozens of countries just to protect big american companies. This is not new. It is just so more self-evident.
July 19th, 2006 at 8:32 amThe article is correct, and Israel is taking full advantage of the US presence in the region, to the benefit of the US. With Lebanon being another front, Syria and Iran now have to concentrate on Lebanon instead of Iraq and Afghanistan.
If Israel starts hitting positions in Syria and Iran, from which they are mounting insurgent attacks into Iraq and Afghanistan, then the US will be able to finish the job of stablizing and supporting the fledgling democracies in the middle east.

July 19th, 2006 at 11:30 pmAny of you muppets that support taking out Irans nuclear enrichment facilities had better do something very un-american. first stop, then think about the consequences, THEN act. I am up for making sure Iran has no military influence over the world as much as anybody, but if Israel or the US take these sites out Iran will scuttle back to REALLY make nukes, very quickly and with an excuse this time. In fact Iran would love you do take out their installations for just this reason. What are you gonna do? Bomb them every couple of years? The next generation of nuclear facilities will be hidden, protected, probably deep underground. You won’t even know they were making nukes until they wave a finished one in your face. At least they are apparently being transparent about it now! The only other options are nuke the whole country (probably not a good idea) or regime change (fancy another go at that?), or of course that, much that we hate to admit it, diplomacy.
