Alabama elects first openly gay legislator.

Patricia Todd, 50, associate director of AIDS Alabama, “is poised to become the first openly gay member” of the Alabama Legislature. Todd said being gay was not a part of her campaign. “The issue to me is poverty in Alabama.”

    Holy Shit. Rapture is coming…

  2. Creepy Unwanted Massage says:

Rachel Maddow was playing audio from someone who thought banning gay marriage would show how strong we are to the terrorists. Pretty funny shit.

    A congressman, no less.

  4. Jay Randal says:

Good for Alabama, but that is a mean state to live in, so good luck to that legislator!

  5. dlet says:

How did that happen? We are talking about Alabama the state right? Not like Alabama, Califonia?

  6. red state librul says:

Smack in the middle of the bible belt? Could it really mean people of Alabama recognize that sexual orientation is irrelevant? God must be really pissed about this one.

great news! … this is interesting:

    A Wallace Loses Alabama Race

MONTGOMERY, Ala., July 18 (AP) — George C. Wallace Jr., the son of the former governor of Alabama, lost a Republican primary runoff for lieutenant governor on Tuesday.

With 99 percent of the precincts reporting statewide, the unofficial count showed Mr. Wallace with 45 percent of the vote, while his opponent, Luther Strange, had 55 percent.

Mr. Strange advances to the general election Nov. 7 against the Democratic nominee, James Folsom Jr., a former governor trying to restart his political career.

so, will alabama go with “lt.gov. STRANGE”? or “lt.gov. FOLSOM”?
Luther Strange sounds like a comic book character, or worse…
    just sayin’

  8. Solitaire says:

What!??! A politician was elected in Georgia based on what the pol wants to do for them rather than who the pol sleeps with ? Are you sure? Can you check that story? I’m finding my feet are on the ceiling and the rug is nowhere to be found. This shakes my world!
    Must be a typo.

  9. Whitters says:

OK, now, ease up on Alabama. I’ve lived here almost all of my life, and I can promise you it’s not as backwards and intolerant as you think. (Also, Solitaire, Alabama is not George. *grin*)

Re: George Wallace Jr. being defeated in the runoff primary…almost all of us Alabama Democrats wanted Wallace to win the primary race. Luther Strange is a gay-hating, abortion-banning, poor-people-ignoring moron. Wallace is much more moderate and reasonable than Strange.

(And yes, Lt.Gov. Strange does sound like a comic-book villain.)

  10. Whitters says:

*ahem* Alabama is not Georgia. I guess I had George Wallace Jr. on my mind. (eek)

Would that be Folsom as in Folsom Prison Blues? Kinda fits the Republican image if you think about it.

  12. Matthew J. Price says:

I was born and raised in this state of Alabama. I know how my people here think. We are not as bad as you might think. Most of us are decent folks who don’t really care about a person’s sexual oreintation. All one needs to do is come down here and talk to them. I’m a Progressive Liberal Democrat and I have only been in about 3 arguments with Conservatives in the past 2 months. Alabama isn’t as Right-Wing as one might think.

All I have to do is explain to them what a Liberal is and they accept it.

  13. wheeler says:

she has not yet been declared the official winner. she leads by 54 votes, and there will be a re-count later this week.

also, she will represent – in alabama’s house – one of the state’s most liberal districts.

finally, some of us are taking bets on which alabama politicial will be the first to say something like “this is going to cause god to send hurricanes.”

  14. red state librul says:

So, #12, Alabama sounds more tolerant than most of Florida. It’s pretty red in my part of The Sunshine State, and liberal is often used as an epithet. But then, we do have a Bush in charge. Can’t wait for him to get out of office.

  15. Will says:

Wow, to be honest, this very surprising but at the same time very encouraging. Voter discrimination is still a big issue to me though, considering that Atheists, not homosexuals, are actually the most discriminated against.

The Gallup Organization concluded that being an Atheist was “the most discriminated-against characteristic of the eight tested in the research.” Only 49% of American adults would vote for an otherwise qualified presidential candidate if he was an Atheist; this compared to 59% who would vote for a homosexual candidate and over 90% who would vote for black or female candidates.

  16. billyjoe says:

I had to surf the Net to get this news, as my ‘puter here at work prohibits and blocks any news of “gay and lesbian interest.”

Pretty stupid that it censors a simple “straight” news story about the election an openly gay official.

  17. JPark says:

#12 Hmm, I don’t buy it. Do you think Alabama (home of Roy Moore, I believe) would actually elect a progressive?

  18. Whitters says:

Hmm, I don’t buy it. Do you think Alabama (home of Roy Moore, I believe) would actually elect a progressive?

Roy Moore was also soundly defeated by Alabama voters in the Republican gubernatorial primary. You can’t judge an entire state based on a couple of crazies who happen to be from that state.

  19. E.J. von Rice says:

Luther Strange sounds like a wonderful canidate for Alabama which is my families roots. This country is in a moral sink hole and we need men of strong moral values to uphold our way of life for the children who will be the ones having to live with these inmoral values that this generation has heeped upon them.. Do we no longer believe in the Scripture that Marriage is between one man and one woman?
If we abandon God, will he abandon us? Is this the world you really want your children to grow up in? There has always been evil, unholy people… We must resist them….
