What scares me about Congress is not that it believes it knows God's plan, but that it believes it has the power to implement God's plan. Worse, this hubris infects both sides of the isle, for don't progressive wealth redistribution schemes also figure prominently into God's plan?

You want to know what God's plan is? Talk to God, not your Congressman. You want to know how it's implemented? By laws? Nonsense. During a blackout, when the law recedes, what keeps the good people in their houses and away from the looting? Certainly not the law.

See, the trap in Congress' thinking and most of the thinking done on this forum is that law serves progress, that is, that laws can reform and unify the claims and obligations people undertake, thereby implemeting common future goals. Not so, for the claims and obligations people undertake now have much less to do with obeying current laws than with meeting current personal goals in a manner they believe just. This is why changing laws to ban gay marriage or recognize it will do little to advance the goals of common progress, however you constitute them, if people don't believe such laws just. Who came first, MLK or Title VII?

So, given that laws don't serve progress but are nonetheless the favored tool of this forum, shouldn't you be calling yourselves "regressives"?

I think we have a nazi in our midst...(heres lookin at YOU #339). Some people express themselves in a generally passive agressive way towards people who hold your rigid, sick beliefs, becuase they are fed up with the complete and utter STAIN on American history that these ideals represent and even moreso the outrageous number of people who subscribe to these completely dull whitted, outdated, regressive ideals, and scream them on the radio, TV and soapbox endlessly. Go kill yourself.

I think these old white men are just psychologically bound to this kind of behavior. They preach about a "woman's Place" and "our" family values and gay people being nothing more than sexually depraved, psychotic second class citizens. I believe these men simply feel, deep down that the pedestal theyve managed to keep themselves on for centurys and position they have to controll minds, money and power are being threatened by people who choose not to live by their rules. Rules that serve to protect the white male's empire of alleagence and image of integrity in this world. A world in which they always stand to gain. Furthermore, reading statements like these make me wonder if these people even payed attention in history, literature and biology class when they were young. How many times has blind faith used by men to create a power structure proved to be nothing more than a hindrance on our ability as human beings to live more properously and become more educated about our world? The name of the game in the whitehouse today is Domination and lots of our people are submitting to that in the abused name of their faith. Is that a healthy, inteligent, pieceful way for us to live or our government to operate? I, for one, will not submit. Has everyone forgotten what life in America is supposed to be all about? This anti gay, anti research, anti womens rights (ect.) stuff is nothing more than religeous pressure in the name of winning steady votes and a subservient, ignorant population and shouldnt even be considered twice as law in this great country.

I know Ckerst at # 45 is right, because G*d told me the same thing!

She (surprise!) also told me that She sent Her only Son in order to explain that there was a lot of wrong sh*t in the Old Testament, and that people who really want to follow Jesus should just forget about the OT and just listen to what She sent Jesus to say.

LOVE, people. It's all about LOVE. It is NOT all about procreation and She tried to make that point by having Jesus love everyone and not one specific person. Tho Jesus DID end up (being human, after all) with one "special friend" and it wasn't Mary Magdalene (hint, hint).

Two rules, that's all there is, She said. "Do unto others what you would have them do unto you" and "Love thy neighbor as thyself."

This last one appears to be really hard for some people who call themselves Christian. But She knows whose hearts are true and whose hearts are false. And She doesn't care how often you go to church, either. She only cares about your sincerity and how you demonstrate your love for others in your everyday life.

She doesn't MIND people going to church. She especially likes the songs they sing to Her. And She realizes some people need constant reminders to stay on course. But so many churches have taken false paths away from Her and Jesus that She's concerned that people will actually lose their way by attending too much church.

And She told me She never managed to get through the President's numbskull, sh if Bush hearing voices, they aren't Hers.

And Bar/Neil? She says you need to undergo an attitude adjustment if you want to spend eternity with Her.

The statements and commandments these politicians are attributing as "Gods words" aren't the universal god. You will read in Genesis 31:13 and Exodus 3:18 right before the statements on marriage the politicians talk about, that this god states he is only a god of Bethel and of the Hebrews. This is not the universal god who rules our planet. Wrong god.

It seems to me these religious types are shooting themselves in the foot with all this "marriage is God's idea" talk. I'm willing to grant them that. If they want to say marriage is God's idea, that's fine. But, then, that means that marriage is a religious thing -- an establishment of religion, if you will. And we already have a contituional amendment about that: it's called the first: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." So, by their own reasoning, Congress should make no laws concerning marriage. Marriage, by their own definition, is a religious thing. The only thing Congress can pass laws about is civil unions. All language about marriage should be removed from all the laws of the United States, because anything else is in violation of the First Amendment.

Specifics: regulate environmental issues, health care, investments, laws of course, and that’s pretty much it. Gov’t needs to stay the heck out of my personal business, i.e. who I sleep with and how, what I do with my body, how I spend my money.

So you vote for the party that negotiates against negotiating with drug companies for lower prices, deny the reality of global warming, the party of Enoron ethics, that wants to outlaw a woman's reproductive choice, decide who you can marry, is against personal medical choice and sepnds precious resources raiding medical marijuana clubs and prosecuting cancer ridden weed smokers and has redistrubuted wealth so that more of the burden falls at a micro level and this makes sense to you? No wonder you support the GOP.

I’m happy these ignorant people are still talking about this. The more they talk, the more inane their comments, the more people get sick to death of hearing about it, the more people just say shut up y’all and leave gay people alone. Gays have always been the underdogs in society, and now with these bigots out in full force trying with all their might to put gay people down, sympathy is swaying toward gay people. Good people generally don’t like to see someone kicked when they’re down. Keep talking bigots. All you do is help the cause for gay people to finally win equal rights in this country.

If marriage is solely for procreation, then women that have had histerectomies shouldn't be allowed to marry. If men that had testicular cancer and had them removed, their marriages should be annulled. Men paralyzed from the waste down, women that are unable to conceive, women in menopause... bush's mom and most likely wife should be kicked to the curb, along with most of those slimeball congressmen's (no capitals because I believe they haven't done anything to earn them) because they are mostly all old and can't conceive anymore. That arguement makes no sense that it is solely for procreation. Had a vasectomy... nope, sorry no loving vows for you. If you've used a condom even once, the marriage should be thrown out. I thought vows were to 'love, honour, and obey,' not 'love in bed, procreate and procreate some more.'
