Tony Snow on Minorities In The White House: ‘Every Group Raise Your Hand, We Want You’

Snow at podium

The National Journal reports that, among the top 20 White House staffers, “there are no African-Americans or Asians…and only one Hispanic.”

Today, following President Bush’s speech to the NAACP, a reporter asked Press Secretary Tony Snow about the lack of diversity in the White House. Snow reponded “You can come aboard and do personnel. You want it?.” Then Snow snapped saracstically, “Let me leave no one behind. Just, every group, raise your hand, we want you.”

Full transcript:

QUESTION: If he is proud of the diversity in his Cabinet, wouldn’t you expect him to improve diversity amongst the White House staff?

SNOW: What the president does is he looks for the best available people.

QUESTION: And they’re all white?

SNOW: I don’t know. Why don’t you tell me?

You can come aboard and do personnel. You want it?

QUESTION: I’m asking a question.

SNOW: I know you are, but it’s an argumentative question that also applied to other previous administrations. Would we like more blacks and Hispanics on? Yes, sure.

QUESTION: And Asians?

SNOW: Asians, too, yes, thank you. Let me leave no one behind. Just, every group, raise your hand, we want you.

Tony Snow, the same man who reintroduced the term "tar baby" into the vernacular, says President Bush will speak to NAACP today because "he wants to."

Here's more background on why this latest cynical Republican outreach effort to African-Americans will fail.

  5. Badmoodman Says:

Tony Snow is a certified miracle worker; he's managed to make me long for the days of Scotty McClellan.

  6. Five of Diamonds Says:

I think Snow's ready to snap. The Press Corps should push his buttons and wait for smoke to come out of his ears.

  7. just an observer Says:

Snow is sounding rather snippy lately. I wonder what Bush's nick name for him is?

  8. Juan C Says:

SNOW: What the president does is he looks for the best available people.

    You mean like you...or himself?

Oh Wow. What an A______! And I mean Tony Snow. It was a valid question...

Mr. Snow it appears your clarity of vision has been seriously impaired by having George W. Bush's ballbag hanging over your eyes.

  14. Dennis Says:

it's easy to see why Bush wanted Snow as press secretary. He's as much of a cocky smart-ass as Bush is, and equally challenged when coming up with facts.

  15. Tracy Says:

That "...he looks for the best available people." comment by Snow didn't seem to mean anything to that reporter. The reporter was trying to get an answer HE already knew. So no, he wasn't "asking a question"...he was trying to be provacative and confrontational. Typical reporter.

  16. Ckerst Says:

What a sarcastic a**hole. Perfect for the repugnacan party and this administration.

That (...) comment by Snow didn’t seem to mean anything to that reporter.
    Comment by Tracy — July 20, 2006 @ 6:11 pm

It did. As a matter of fact, the reporter asked a follow-up question.

The reporter was trying to get an answer HE already knew.

And what answer would that be? Please enlighten us.

... he was trying to be provacative and confrontational. Typical reporter.

So what is the point of your post?

  18. Shades Says:

#5 you beat me to the punch. I never thought I'd miss Scotty Boy.

  19. Southwest Bob Says:

Snow is a perfect spokesman for the prez. In case we happen to forget what a boob bush is, snow gives us a daily reminder.

  20. Opie Says:

Tracy, can you think more than half a layer deep?

  21. mjb Says:

Time for some reporter with sack (probably Helen Thomas) to ask the boob "Tony, why are you such a douche-bag? Do you get off on beating down people doing their jobs by asking the tough questions? What's your excuse for being so lame? Is it easy being the village idiot's mouthpiece? How often do you have to brush your teeth to make the foul taste go away?"

  22. Pat Babb Says:

I found early on in my career on Wall St that one of the reasons they didn't hire more women (I am a woman), was because they didn't go looking for women. They took whatever resumes the headhunters sent them and just assumed that was the entire pool of talent. I don't put all the blame there -- people need to step up to the plate -- but once I became a manager I challenged the head hunters with whom we worked to find more diverse candidates.

I'm no longer in management because I didn't like it -- but it just occurred to me, (on Wall St.) I've never had an African American woman as a colleague or team member. How is that possible? Aren't there any African American women out there programming computers?

  23. Giacomo Says:

Gee Tracy, we wouldn’t want a member of the press to be provocative or confrontational, would we.

Yet when Mr. Snow throws it back in their faces ... the TP echo chamber cries "no fair, he's not allowed to call them out".

    What a Queen be-otch!

Snow is sounding rather snippy lately.

Darn, someone already beat me to calling him a douchebag.

Oh Wow. What an A______! And I mean Tony Snow.

He’s as much of a cocky smart-ass as Bush is

    What a sarcastic a**hole.

Cry me a freakin' river. Mr. Snow isn't about to take their BS, nor should he. There are two types of questions people ... information seeking and challenging. You ALWAYS answer the first ... the second can be stomped on if the question is self-emulating.

Oh, I guess Dr. Rice is now in too high a position to count as a "staffer" ... but she should be taken into account when measuring diversity, should she not? (Arguably, the most influential and powerful African-American woman in US history). Hello??

  24. Liberal "Don't Like It, Bite Me" Rick Says:

That was a Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Neil Bortz answer if there ever was one.

    #18

He knew the racial composition of the White House staff evidence by his previous comment:

"If he is proud of the diversity in his Cabinet, wouldn’t you expect him to improve diversity amongst the White House staff?"

Reporters don't walk into a press conference TOTALLY blind.

"So what is the point of your post?"

That the reporter was trying to be an ass by playing stupid.

  26. Opie Says:

Hey Giacomo, you're like Tracy. If the discussion goes deeper than half a layer, you're lost and respond with lame, third grade responses mentioned by Clams Casino in #7.

  27. Jackie Says:

Tony Snow can then call a black person a Tar Baby to their face. Look Bush doesn't like Black people only one for shagging. The facts speak for themselves.

  28. Tracy Says:

    #26

    A self-emulating reporter?...no way! Egocentric maybe.

  29. Tracy Says:

    #29

To take this discussion any deeper would be a waste of time. How much deeper do you need to go to get the jist of that reporter's MO.

  30. David B Says:

Snowflake, spoken like a true bigot. What asmug asshole, I'm still trying to get over the hezbollah comment to Ms. Thomas one of the most respected journalists in DC. But then again, none of her collegues present rose to her defense and demanded an apology. At the least, they could have left the room in protest.

  31. Opie Says:

Tracy, because Snow (and you) is unable to answer the question, you change the subject and revert to a back-and-forth exchange that reporters are playing a game of gotcha. Answer the question, please. In this day and age, when any company worth a damn actively seeks the resources that diversity offers, is only one of 20 White House staffers a minority?

  32. Gene Says:

If Americans don't vote the Democrats into a majority in the house and senate or at least one...WE DESERVE WHAT WE'RE GETTING AND WILL CONTINUE TO GET FOR YEARS TO COME.

  33. Southwest Bob Says:

It's interesting that the bush misadministration has turned the daily press briefing into a confrontational exchange rather than an question and answer session. Questions would not have to be confrontational if honest answers were given. This president has avoided responsibility for his actions his entire life. He simply doesn't like being held accountable and now we have Mr. Snow to lie and be nasty to anyone who dares question their stupid actions.

  34. Ho Chi Minh Says:

The administration only want blacks, asians, & latinos as tokens to be used at photo ops, do the gardening, cook the food, and wipe their massers behinds.

  35. Gene Says:

    Tracy,
I can tell what that reporter's "MO" is right now: They want to know how, in a country that represents itself as a "melting pot," are there NO black people, Asians and only one Hispanic working for the administration??

What is it you DON'T understand??

And, if you actually DON'T understand...how is that possible??

  36. David B Says:

#36 - Bluedog, if I had to work for an organization that would fire me for having some integrity and speaking up, well, I wouldn't call it a job. Jaun Williams finally called out Kristol on faux news of all places. Maybe some others need to grow a set of stones as well.

  37. Gene Says:

    David,
You hit it on the head: Reporters are so gunshy from being bashed and battered by the administration and the right wing radio talk mongers (for being un-American of all things), they appear to be afraid to take a shot at the real truth.

As for Kristol; here you've got a talking head literally designing the neocon's gameplan for invasions of sovereign nations.

  38. Gregor Samsa Says:

Oh, I guess Dr. Rice is now in too high a position to count as a “staffer” …
    Comment by Giacomo — July 20, 2006 @ 6:44 pm

    Absolutely correct.

Sec. Rice is a member of Pres Bush's cabinet. She's way above a staffer.

but she should be taken into account when measuring diversity, should she not?

Not if the question was centered specifically around the White House staff. In that sense, the reporter has a point in that diversity is lacking.

Snow's sarcastic remark "Just, every group, raise your hand, we want you" was out of line. He has been on the other side; why the belligerance? The reporter was doing his job of asking questions.

Not to mention that I find it hard to believe there are no qualified Asians or African-Americans to fill any of the positions.

  39. Gene Says:

The entire discussion is really moot.

If the Bush administration wanted diversity, they'd have it.

If you look at the backgrounds of the top layer of people in the adminstration, why would anybody think they actually care what blacks, Asians and Hispanics want or need?

With the exception of contact with those who have always tended to their needs, where would any form of real human interaction have taken place?

  40. Anon1 Says:

I never knew how dumb Snow was. With McClellan, you knew he wasn't dumb, just a hypocrite. I'm afraid Mr. Snow is both.

  41. Cyra Brown Says:

Somebody should hand Tony a 'Midol', and a box of 'Kotex'. Maybe he would get the point. No offense to the women here, (myself included), but it would take something like that to sink into his thick skull. If he is so unhappy with his job, he can always quit. I bet Scottie is laughing his ass off right now, wherever he is. And rightly so. Tony must be making the gang at FOX really proud.

  42. PLC (PatrioticLiberalChristian) Says:

With Bush finally agreeing to address the NAACP, this question was not only on point, it deserved a follow-up: "Is the President meeting with the NAACP in order to reach out for that diversity or to try to win some votes in November?"

  43. theswan Says:

Who would want to "come aboard" any white house, to check what? you ain't checkin nothin for your surely going to the brig. gestapo, white gustapo. what naacp?

  44. Giacomo Says:

Hey Giacomo, you’re like Tracy. If the discussion goes deeper than half a layer, you’re lost and respond with lame, third grade responses mentioned by Clams Casino in #7.

WOW ... what a substantive retort ... you were on the debate team, weren't you.

I suppose you'd like to enlighten me as to how I fail to measure up to your depth test ... how my response was "lame" or "third grade". Certainly, you're aware that arguing "your argument is weak" without actually naming how is, rather, ... uhmm, weak. I'm sure you were aware of this ... you being the barometer of substance.

Oh well ... let me respond in kind. "Opie is a cootie filled poo poo head".

  45. james risser Says:

today is the bush crime family hug a negro day!

darfur and the naacp on the same day!

wow, will he take a good ol' boy ribbing at the next quasi-homoerotic meeting of the skulls and bones crew!

  46. Giacomo Says:

Bush supporters are authoritarians. They don’t fundamentally believe in questioning authority. They believe in following the leader unquestioning. Tell us, Bush cultists, if a reporter wanted to make the point that Bush’s staff is comprised of white men, how would he do that?

He'd ask ... "some have criticized this administration for lacking diversity, how do you respond?" He'd then wait for an answer and similarly follow up. What he wouldn't do is argue based upon selective information nor would he phrase it as a tautology. Questioning is fine, the manner is important.

By the way ... saying something like "they don’t fundamentally believe in questioning authority" is also an incorrect tautology. Perhaps this is why you missed that nuance in the reporter's line of questioning?

Your statements above are childish caricatures of those who don't agree with you ... difference of perspective or opinion shouldn't just be attributed to either your 1) superior intellect or 2) your minimizing an opposite to "cult" status. How churlish ...

  47. Bob Satan Says:

“You can come aboard and do cronyism.....” -TS

  48. Giacomo Says:

Not if the question was centered specifically around the White House staff. In that sense, the reporter has a point in that diversity is lacking.

So, given that one of the highest positions in the country is held by a member of one of the least represented minority groups (black female) in US history AND given the scope, importance and nature of this position renders the assertion that the appointment was "symbolic" as utter horse-crap ... should the honest amongst us not recognize this as relevant when measuring the value of diversity to the current administration? I'm quite sure you will concede this, Gregor.

Not to mention that I find it hard to believe there are no qualified Asians or African-Americans to fill any of the positions.

Well ... seeing as it's illegal to consider race when hiring for government positions, I'm guessing you'd want them to avoid that. Hire who is 1) available 2) willing to work for only 2 years in a battered administration and 3) capable ... any and all can apply. To assume that Bush would select on the basis of race is retarded, especially given his need to surround himself with the best avaliable (in case you haven't noticed, things aren't going super well for him right now).

  49. griff Says:

I think Tony Snow is on Jon Stewart's payroll. Who needs writers with this dildo at the mike? It's just a question every day of which gaffe to use. They need to make the Daily Show an hour long for these clowns.

  50. Mary Bon Says:

remeber Janeanne Garafolo and Mr. Furious in Mystery Men?

  51. Gregor Samsa Says:

(...) should the honest amongst us not recognize this as relevant when measuring the value of diversity to the current administration? I’m quite sure you will concede this, Gregor.
    Comment by Giacomo — July 20, 2006 @ 8:56 pm

Right, I am not arguing that at all.

Which is why -in my opinion- the reporter contrasted the diversity at the Cabinet level with the lack thereof at the staff level.

To assume that Bush would select on the basis of race is retarded, especially given his need to surround himself with the best avaliable (in case you haven’t noticed, things aren’t going super well for him right now).

It is more than retarded, it is illegal. But that is not what I was trying to say. I wanted to say that I find it hard to believe that out of all the applicants, there were no qualified Asian or African-American candidates. Surely, just out of sheer numbers, a few would have been selected, not just one. Unless there were no minority applicants, or only one was qualified -both hard-to-believe propositions.

"Surround himself with the best avaliable". This is the same reply that prompted the reporter to ask: "And they're all white?" What does that reply mean, exactly? Does it mean that the best available are necessarily Caucasian?

And yes, I have noticed that things are not exacly going well for Pres Bush. And for that, he only has himself to blame.

  52. Joe Sixpack Says:

To assume that Bush would select on the basis of race is retarded, especially given his need to surround himself with the best avaliable (in case you haven’t noticed, things aren’t going super well for him right now).
    Comment by Giacomo

I dunno. It could almost seem to be he prefers a token in the Secretary of State's office.

  53. Nate Says:

Great post with video of Tony Snow back in 2003 regarding Racism in America.

    Bush vs. Snow

Funny because three years ago, Bush's current Press Secretary said that "racism isn't that big of a deal anymore". Here's the video.

    Worth the read and watch.

  54. Skeptic Says:

An honest answer would have been: "George Bush is surrounded by white retards, since he is a white retard and feels uncomfortable among people who look different and think better than he does". or another "The White House staff are underpaid and overworked and no competenant minority person wanted to work with the sophomoric inconsiderate right wing, patronizing assholes in the top positions. Those few who did apply were suffering from masochist personality disorder".

  55. Somos Familia Says:

    Doin' a heckuva job, Snowy.

  56. james risser Says:

    #63

an equally honest answer would be:

"george bush is a closeted racist as are all the members of the crime family, and the people he surrounds himself with originate from the human cesspool of the neoconservative movement. these knuckle-dragging degenerates are all racists--the truly ignorant, the truly moronic, the worst that america has to offer. therefore, we keep one or two house-negroes around to make it look not too bad, but, the white house, THIS white house will remain so."

  57. Wolfdaughter Says:

Guys, I am no Bush fan. I think he's arguable the worst president in our nation's history.

But in my opinion, Bush isn't a racist per se, and having Condi as Sec'y of State (preceded by Powell), shows that. Bush is a classist. He has no understanding of anything but the very upper class, because that's what he was born as and that's who he associates with. Other members of the upper classes do have empathy and are able to look beyond their upbringing, but Bush has never been one to inquire outside of his narrow box.

Also, the fact that only one person in the White House staff is a minority member is due to Bush's cronyism. All presidents have practiced cronyism and cronyism is practiced in all walks of life. But Bush has brought it to a new high art. His appointments are all people he knows or recommended by people he knows. And they keep their positions only if they are able to appear uncritical. They have to show loyalty. Again, this has been true of previous presidents, and is true in other areas of endeavor, but Bush has also brought the absolute requirement for loyalty to a high art.

It is very clear from events in recent years that Bush's appointees, for the most part, have had little relevant experience, and while on the job, develop little understanding of what it takes to perform in their respective slots. (Katrina, Iraq, etc.) But if any of them knew Afro- or Asian-Americans and recommended them, they could very well get hired.

Cronyism, not racism, is what informs Bush's choices.

  58. Marie Says:

Tony Snow is qualified to be a press secretary - he lies easily and is an endless source of entertainment.

  59. Cyra Brown Says:

#57- Come on, Giacomo, I know you are more intelligent than that. "...It's illegal to consider race when hiring for Government positions..." That means that you can't use 'race' as a reason NOT to hire someone, it's called discrimination, and I know that you know that, too. That was beneath you.

  60. james risser Says:

and the basis for cronyism is racism. a 'crony' is a good ol' boy. and condi and colon were just house negros to make things look a bit better...

you discredit the word 'cronyism' by not seeing as a pretextual way of explaining away the horrible, intrinsic racism of the neoconservative...

  61. Sam Jones Says:

Wow! Cronyism? If we were talking about minorities in this country, I think they call this Affirmative Action! Funny how the terminology changes when white people benefit from Affirmative Action. My bad...cronyism! hmmmm!

  62. james risser Says:

sam, you ignornat slut. affirmative action can only apply to a minority, by definition. you closeted racists always fall back on that one.

the bush apologists will not go as far as to recognize his true sick racism; they instead choose to see it as simple, less repugnant, cronyism. people don't like to admit their racism--they instead, as you do, compare affirmative action to whites hiring whites; or, they mislabel it as something more pleasing: cronyism.

bush is lying, murdering, ugly, filthy, ignorant, knuckle-dragging, good ol' boy racist--plain and simple.

  63. Zooey Says:

Tony "Snowflake" Snow: The empty suit, with a rug on top.

  64. Redleg Says:

Snow is an arrogant piece of shite. He dismisses legitimate questions with the air of noblesse oblige so common among Bush's cabinet and staff. I'm waiting for that prick to say one day: "Let them eat cake!"

Remember, this is a president who had only 51% of the vote (assuming that the votes were counted correctly) yet he and his party act as though he won in a landslide.

  65. Redleg Says:

Bush is a racist, like all other conservatives who are INDIFFERENT to the plight of minorities in this country and in the world.

You say "But he hired Condi Rice and Colin Powell- that proves he's not racist."

I say that Bush picked them as tokens. Bush didn't allow Colin Powell to do his job as Sec. of State. Powell wanted to engage Israel & Palestine, he wanted to continue the Clinton Admins. line with N. Korea, etc. but Bush didn't allow it- he jerked his boy Colin back on a short leash.

Bush values Condi because she is loyal to him and does his bidding. Condi is the kind of Black Bush likes, one who is gonna show the appropriate gratitude and deference to the master. Same goes for Alberto Gonzales.

  66. Jay Randal Says:

Bush only appoints ass kissers to his administration, so if you know any Blacks, Latinos, Asians, etc. who are willing to sell out their souls, then have them contact Tony Snow > lol.

  67. rapter Says:

The WH Press Secretary is supposed to brief the assembled reporters and field questions from the corps. What the current person occupying this position is engaging in is arguments with the press, and lecturing them daily on how to ask him questions. His "performance" is irritating. The President should not be fronted by someone yearning to be a stand-up comic.
    The Rapter

  68. rapter Says:

The current Secretary of State is not qualified for the high position she holds. The ability to follow directives from the President is not a requirement. The Secretary should have the lattitude to develope strategies created by a staff of qualified career Foreign Service officers, of course with approval of the President; rather than following directives issued by the VP and Sec'y of Defense over the signature of a marionette president.
Rice was put in her position for three special reason: she is a female, she is black, and she is loyal. Intellect is not on the foregoing list. Beyond those three reasons Ms. Rice has no other qualifications.

  69. liz Says:

bet they do not have any disabled people.... insurance costs too much.

  70. Opie Says:

Tracy and Giacamo, if you happen to read this far down on Friday morning, note the first sentence of #77, Rapter's, comment. It's Snow's JOB to answer the f*****g questions, not initiate an unprofessional, tit-for-tat, third grade exchange.

  71. Larry from C Says:

There may not be blacks or hispanics on the White House Staff but they do employ minorities. They have 3 sociopaths, 5 psychopaths and 9 megalomaniacs.

  72. Coffins draped with flags Says:

SNOW: What the president does is he looks for the best available people.

Yeah, the best available lapdogs is more like it. Anyone that is willing to wipe Bush's butt can get a job in this administration and that includes Tony Snow. I think I like Scotty better than this brown poop Snow guy.

  73. JJ Says:

'Every Group Raise Your Hand, We Want You’

Hey, isn't that a line from Purple Rain?

  74. Jay Jelgar Says:

I used to feel somewhat sorry for Scotty. It was convenient to see him as the clueless, hapless, guileless shill for whatever line of BS was spewing forth from Mr. Bush's puppethandlers. It seemed incredibly condescending, disrespectful of us all that he was their choice to be the WH's daily mouthpiece to the world. But it's clear to me now that choosing him was just another important part of their plan, effectively leading us to long for a competent, intelligent press secretary, rather than seeing them as the cynical, authoritarian bunch they are. Now that we appear to have such a person as Scotty's replacement, tauted at the time he was appointed as some sort of independent voice, it's extremely disquieting to have Snow as daily reminder of the narrow-minded, short-sighted, smart-ass, wise-guy, frat-boy mentality that dominates our country, our lives, our perilous world. Woe is us.

  75. Fernando Caballero Says:

I am a self described Hispanic minority and I can tell from the brief question exchange that the reporter is a rather ignorant person. The White House reporting corp must be fully integrated themselves because they wouldn't be asking that question of the White House. They even have the village idiot in that reporter.

  76. Fernando Caballero Says:

Tony Snow rocks... we need more of his refreshing insights to combat the ignorant rantings from this website and the White House reporters.

Sometimes insightful sarcasm is necessary to successfully argue ignorant liberal minds. For them Condi is not black enough, Alberto G. is not Hispanic enough, Powell is not minority enough, Emilio González is not Hispanic enough, Rumsfield is not old enough... to them anything Bush does is good enough. They gotta get over their own sense of importance and move on.

  77. joneser Says:

    #85 Here here Fernando

from a self described (if i ever decide to check that little box again so i can be a statistic first and an American second) young black male...

I agree... it seems you always seem to get grief when you step off the plantation and think independently and stop being a victim....
Sometimes you got more to worry about than Halliburton, "Bushco", and anyone who has more than you...

I still wonder what took Bush long enough to appoint Snow. Those poor egos in the press core can't handle when someone answers on the same level the quesiton was brought to the table... ask a stupid question you get a stupid answer.

But then again... minorities in the white house cabinet.... well clinton had Jocelyn Elders right? Affirmative Action at it's best.

  78. nic Says:

For all those who defend Snow:
He has been confrontational since the start, most likely because he is now dealing with a press corps who are ACTUALLY ASKING QUESTIONS INSTEAD OF BUYING INTO THE LIES THEY WERE FED FOR FIVE YEARS

  79. nic Says:

The GOP and White House admin are racists and bigots, is that such a tough concept?! What the *** do you think New Orleans is?!? Its about freakin time that the white house press corps asks the tough questions because THAT IS THE JOB OF THE FREE PRESS !!!! Instead of being fed mealy-mouthed Scotty McClellan garbage, every other answer of which was "cannot respond it's an ongoing investigation" well what do we expect since everyone in the GOP is corrupt and criminal.. jeez how stupid are Americans.. dont answer that. They voted Bush back in.. or at least, tried to.. it took Diebold and the Supreme Court to finish the job. I say that Tony Snow is FAIR GAME for ANY and ALL questions about this criminal administration. If he can't handle it in his racist fashion, then maybe the other 20 white guys on the staff can.

  80. Redleg Says:

    Fernando and jonesr:
You two should be really proud of Alberto Gonzales and Condi Rice. They are doing very well in their cabinet positions. That's why things are going so well in re: our foreign policy and torturing.

Can you actually name any accomplishments of those two other than that they are Bush sycophants?

  81. Jay Says:

The real question is ... do they really want minorities? And if they do, do they only want certain ones. For example... lets see them hire some openly homosexual men to work in the administration. I am sure that would go over well.

  82. tablogloid Says:

"The current Secretary of State is not qualified for the high position she holds."

I am neither a bushite nor do I have fantasies about Condie in skin tight vinyl, but she is qualified for the job.

  83. phillyfan Says:

Bush knew exactly what he was doing when he hired snow, he wanted someone that would carry the fox party line. ON ABC news this morning, a news anchor aksed snow if the administration was going to try and get Israel to stop bombing lebanon and snow replied" you have it all twisted around, hezbolla is bombing Israel, they are shelling innocent civilians. I was waiting for him to say that the anchor was giving hezbolla's view. If that wasn't a fox news answer then hannity's a liberal

  84. phillyfan Says:

    What about jeff gannon?

  85. Maurice Says:

Is Tony Snow Ted Baxter? This guy used to have a TV show? Ideology - 10, Competence - 0

  86. phillyfan Says:

I love these bushbackers that call other people ignorant. Do they think that this administration really gives a flying f**K about them. I would like to see one piece of legislation this administration passed that benefited anyone but the rich and their agenda. These aren't your fathers conservatives. Where have they shrunk govt. Where have they kept out of peoples lives? Please name me one thing that is in your best interest? Gay marriage, flag burning, how many people know gays who wanted to get married or someone who burnt a flag and how does it benefit you if they stop it? Will gays effect your marriage? Will burning a flag stop you from earning a paycheck. They certainly aren't protecting you from terrorist, they just got an F grade in that? You do realize that the Iraq war was a mistake and based on lies. Their foriegn policy isn't worth a damn. Please enlighten me. What the hell makes you so passionate for them, unless you just want to be controversial for the sake of it. I'm not looking for argument or name calling, I really want to know why you take their positions so strongly. I appreciate it

  87. nic Says:

    joneser,

thank you. We finally know what, and how the 30% who still support Bush think.

No clue about the Democratic platforms for social and campaign reform, civil liberties, the environment, corruption-free government, and PEACE. We know damn well what we believe in.. and it has nothing to do with the corporate/militaristic rape of earth under the pseudo-Christian ethic as subscribed to by the Cheney/Rove/Rumsfeld cabal. And we WILL debate the Iraq lie "cliche".. as you seem to feel that accountability is worthless. Those who ARE accountable will be brought to justice, if there is any left.

  88. joneser Says:

No no nic... thank you.. viva la revolution!

  89. Opie Says:

Joneser, moderates rest their case. You're only interested in a revolution. The hell with treating anyone who thinks otherwise with any semblance of dignity. Your maliciousness is clear.

    ...pass yourselves off as "conservatives"...

...while daily sucking the joint of the al cracker criminals in the white House and Congress...

...who are robbing this country blind, selling it our to the highest bidders, and making us the enemies of the world...

...the rich elitists are hording money (with which to make good their exodus to Israel)...

...aided and abetted by sh*t-for-brains inbred al Crackers like you!

...But your inbred kind want to focus on who's screwing whom (literally)...

  91. phillyfan Says:

My question was what have they done that wil benefit you? how are they making life better for you. they have underfunded education. no child left behind has left most children behind. your gay argument was just sidestepping the issue. and dems forced that issue? dems wanted to change the constitution? I'M not asking about WW II JFK, FDR. If you stand for the cons. agenda then you can't be with this bunch. SS reform? don't kid yourself. How could you advocate spying on americans and call youself conservative. You know darn well that the dems have no power to promote any kind of change when every vote is along partisan lines. You try to shove your morality down everyones throat. Do you think your children are going to go till they are married w/o seeing a tit, get real. we libs have morals too. We hate discrimination of anykind, we hate to see killing of ANY soldiers if it can be avoided and we care about the troops, maybe more so than you, so much that we are pissed that they were sent in harms way. To explain it away by saying oh well were their now is ludicrus. you take our concern for weakness, but we are the ones who fight and watch our brothers die in senseless wars. The republicans are only interested in making sure their financial backers get rewarded. I don't care how big he makes Govt. I just want him to be competent enough to run it right not run it into the ground. We don't hate Bush it's just that he's a bozo who pretends he is governing while he is being used. I'm sorry to tell you but the neo cons cannot govern. dems can govern better in their sleep. Hence Iraq, 9/11, katrina, Korea, Iran, the rest of the world. You may hate Bill Clinton but he can stand up in front of the UN and get a standing ovation. No one in this administration will ever get that

  92. YouCantHandleDaTruth Says:

    Hey Pat (post #25)

I found early on in my career on Wall St that one of the reasons they didn’t hire more women (I am a woman), was because they didn’t go looking for women.

And this is part of the reason why pockets of non diversity still exist in America today. The reason that the white house doesn't have a diverse staff is they dont go looking for them and they persist an environment that's not welcoming to non white opinions.

I dont think Bush represents most of America when it comes to hiring but there are those pockets of non diversity that feed off of people like him.

How is that possible? Aren’t there any African American women out there programming computers?

Yeap, the black representation in IT in America is around 9% close to the 12% of the population. As a black person in IT I've found .coms and Wall Street are the least inviting places to contract.

  93. JPark Says:

Giacomo, I used to have a bit of respect for you (unlike those morons MA and joneser) but I see I was wrong. You say that he needs the best people around him? Are you joking? Cronyism doesn't even enter your mind?

  94. Redleg Says:

Why did my response to Mighty Aphrodite get removed?

  95. JPark Says:

Redleg, maybe because you responded to a moron :)

  96. Redleg Says:

    jonesr,
Ah, the tired old "liberals don't have any new ideas" schtick. Nice. The conservatives have been working the same tired old idea over and over and over, ad nauseum. Tax cuts for the wealthy, whether we're in a recession or expansion coupled with supply-side economics, also known as handouts for Halliburton, et al.

How is that conservative philosophy working for the country now? We have the largest national debt ever, a jobless "recovery," a quagmire in Iraq and Afghanistan, stagnant wages for working people, a damaged infrastructure, global warming, health care crisis, etc, etc. Last time I checked the GOP was in charge of the presidency, both houses of congress, and the supreme court (i'm too tired to capitalize proper nouns).

As for the school vouchers, perhaps you didn't read the latest study published by the Dept. of Education that shows public schools to be as effective as private schools for most measures. Our nations should have the best public schools in the world but instead you asswipes want to further dismantle the public education so that you can create your own conservative madrassas to indoctrinate your young sheeple.

Anyway, you can take your conservative philosophy and your warmongering ways and go teach those uppity Iraqis a lesson.

  97. Redleg Says:

    JPark,
Too true. It turns out my post wasn't removed.

  98. JPark Says:

#108 Nice post. I hear "Democrats have no ideas" all the time but there is no discussion of the Pubbies having no ideas (except about burning flags, hating fags and reading porn mags). They have no policy yet it is the minority parties job to have the ideas.

  99. TexasLady41 Says:

The press are IDIOTS! You ask a stupid question,... you get a STUPID answer.

  100. Opie Says:

TexasLady41, you're right. The press needs to take advantage of the WH briefings to ask intelligent questions that the public wants answers to. Hey, Tony, when does the president go on vacation again?

  101. mighty aphrodite Says:

#103 - "My question was what have they done that wil benefit you? how are they making life better for you...." - Comment by Phillyfan

*****Thank you for reminding me what and how too many progs think. I don't look to the government to benefit me - I look to the government to defend the nation. The problem with many progs is the mindset that somone should be doing for them what they can and should do for themselves.

  102. mighty aphrodite Says:

JPark - Progressives haven't had an original idea in 150 years - (and that idea was a miserable failure) - why start now?

You want to discuss one problem -look at education. The NEA stranglehold of the politically correct curriculum has made a high school diploma not worth the equivalent of TP. The biggest complaint teachers in the 40's and 5-0's had was "funning in the hall" and chewing gum. Todays teacher's cite guns and knives.

But TLO v. New Jersey was a really low point for public ed. TLO's parents SUED the school after a locker check revealed contraband. SHAME ON THEM!!!! Shame on all parents who believe their child vs. the teacher. When Mikey Aphrodite came home with a cock and bull story that Mrs. Teacher "didn't like him" I said, "So....your teacher is not paid to like you...she's paid to teach you." Funny, at parent teacher conference shortly thereafter, his teacher told me his strong points and areas that needed work - she was right on the money! Teachers today are NOT just teachers - they are social workers, surrogate parents, etc. etc.

  103. Opie Says:

Mighty, I agree that gov't should let me mind my own business. So why is it then that you want to control what happens in my bedroom, or control my wife's body, or control my children by making them recite their prayers outloud in school and possibly taking away their ability to take science classes, or control what rights my gay friends have, or control my ability to eat safely in a restaurant because those sitting around me are legally packing concealed weapons, etc, etc.

  104. mighty aphrodite Says:

Dixie - Contemporary progressive "thought" is re-hashed socialism. (It's kind of like adding the term "NEW & IMPROVED" to the packaging of your favourite detergent..) When I discuss "OLD, failed" ideas, I refer to Socialism and it's parent, Communism.

  105. Jack Says:

This was a loaded and dumb question. Of course Snow got irritated. Who cares how many minorities are in the White House? This president won the election and as a result can put anyone in the White House he wants.

  106. Tracy Says:

    #37

The answer is to the question: "Are they all white" is as the reporter ALREADY knew is no. The White House seeks the most qualified people as Snow said. It isn't that hard to understand.

  107. Tracy Says:

    #42

The MO of the reporter was to get an answer from Snow that he already knew the answer to. The White House staff is made of people who want to work for the president and agrees with his administration's agenda. Maybe it's because all of the black and asian candidates have been suckered by the liberal Democrats so that they would not even consider working for a Republican administration. Can YOU explain why Rice is so high up on the administration's cabinet and why Powell was....both African American?

  108. joneser Says:

tracy it doesn't matter what you say about it... the response would be that they ... are part of "Buchco" Halliburton blah blah... they are brainwashed... obviously no reasonable discourse about it.. especially considering all the previous democratic presidents and candidates.... what they really want to say is what would get them in trouble... that they are props or tokens to get the black vote... but damn if they say that cause then you'd have to ask what the Dems and Libs have been doing for all these years.

  109. iknos Says:

    Big Papa Post # 102

I sent you a response about a week ago. I applaud you. Your comments against white people has been on here for awhile. Your scathing remarks get left here for all to read. I understand that this is suppose to be here for all to read and post. But just like most liberals, this board only allows things on here that you want. If it gets too out of your bounds, you sensor it.

My response was not quite as bad as yours. My response however, was against people like you. Uneducated, or if educated has a chip on your shoulder, and I remarked about most of the same things you said only against you.

My remarks are gone. WHAT a surprise!! It is just like you (Mr. Moderator) can't handle the truth. I wonder how long you will leave this comment on here?

  110. Strength_Through_Joy Says:

    Redleg,

"As for the school vouchers, perhaps you didn’t read the latest study published by the Dept. of Education that shows public schools to be as effective as private schools for most measures."

    Talk about a "neutral" source!

"Our nations should have the best public schools in the world but instead you asswipes want to further dismantle the public education so that you can create your own conservative madrassas to indoctrinate your young sheeple."

Ha! You have to be joking! How can you compare a NEA-dominated monopoly to a decentralized, pro-choice system? You're basically saying that parents shouldn't be trusted with their offsprings' education because some of them may the "wrong" choice. You'd rather have a state monopoly since Big Brother knows best!
