Right-Wing Attacks American Evacuees: ‘Ingrates,’ ‘Whining,’ ‘Spoiled-Rotten Little Children’

The Bush administration’s evacuation of Americans in Lebanon has been disorganized and lagged behind the efforts of other countries. As of yesterday, only a few thousand had been able to evacuate, and they departed “two days after the first Europeans left on ships.” Denmark, for example, “evacuated more than 4,000 of its citizens” by Thursday.

Conservatives have reacted to this incompetence by attacking the evacuees:

Rush Limbaugh, 7/19:

Even in the eyes of our ingrate, spoiled-rotten little children, brat-type ingrate citizens in Beirut, it’s our fault. (Crying.) “It’s a war zone. It’s a war! How do I get out? (crying) We’re having to shield ourselves from the sun in cardboard.” (sobbing) That’s embarrassing.

Fox anchor Neil Cavuto, 7/20:

The media is playing up a lot of whining, complaining Americans in this country who said there’s been no warning, no communication.

TownHall.com columnist Mike Gallagher, 7/21:

Amazingly, we’re not even going to charge these ungrateful evacuees for the free trip home. … Their sense of outrage and entitlement is slowly but surely becoming the American way. And it’s positively disgusting.

Fox anchor Steve Doocy, 7/19:

Shockingly, after they’ve been plucked out of Beirut, a lot of them are whining and complaining that, you know what, I had to sleep on the concrete and they didn’t have any food for me to eat.

Watch Fox & Friends (a Fox correspondent in Cyprus disputes Doocy’s account, describing the evacuation conditions as “really chaotic”):

  3. NewNameAcquired says:

Well my only negitive comment, is that I’m surprised ANYONE would want to live in that region. Everyone knows the Middle East countries have been fighting with each other for years, so why move there in the first place?

  4. NewNameAcquired says:

And Denmark is closer to Isreal and Lebanon then the US is, so I’m not surprised that they got there first.

  10. Lupeyg2 says:

I truly believe you must have to sell your soul upon entering the reich wing…because it is blatantly obvious that these people are absent of one. It is plausible however that they never did have one and were drawn there first. Chicken or the egg?

    yeah, like elections in Iraq.

So, first, the wanted to charge them to ship’em home. Now, they insult them because they return home?

I heard on NPR that Shrubbie had never, not once left the United States of America (other than foraging into seedy Mexican border towns, probably to buy illegal pharmeceuticals and cheap booze) until becoming Commander in Chimp.

No wonder he has no sense of world affairs and the diversity and complexity of other cultures.

    Shocking…?

  19. Skeptic says:

We can’t rescue people from a hurricane with three day’s notice. We can’t rescue people from a war zone with nearly two weeks to consider it. What else can’t we do? Also we have a military presence oh right next door in Iraq and close by in Germany and in Italy so why is this so slow?

  20. chopper says:

You could take being called whiney, spoiled brats by a Military lifer or some similar type but not by these panty waists.

  21. Bruce Gorton says:

    DieNowForPeace

This isn’t an issue of knowing world affairs, this is an issue of actually giving a damn when your own citizens are in danger. Bush doesn’t, and nor do the right wing.

What’s there to be jealous of?

  24. DieNowForPeace says:

#19 What else can’t we do?

We can’t protect our own country, supposedly with the strongest military in the world, from 4 poorly flown aircraft on 9/11.

I think that’s the singularly most important fact we should never forget about this damn asleep-at-the-wheel redneck administration…

  25. Jay Randal says:

If Limbaugh or any other GOP fruitcakes were in Lebanon, then I would leave them there to be captured by Hezbollah!

  26. Janus says:

I would love to see Limbaugh try to go without food, water, or shelter.

  27. Gay Bear says:

How would these talking heads like it if they were stuck there? I suggest they’d be s**ting their pants. I know I would be. Keep on talking Fox News morons. Every insipid word that drivels out of your mouths is just another nail the coffin of Bush’s propaganda spewing “news” channel. The more they speak this nonsense, the less Americans are likely to sympathize with or believe what they hear on this channel. Clearly, Fox News does not care about Americans. If that wasn’t abundantly clear before, it surely is now. Bravo to Fox News! How proud they must be.

  28. Bruce Gorton says:

    Grandpa Seth

When last did a war end? There’s your answer.

  29. Time Capsule says:

18# That would explain how he gets to brazil and says” wow brazils a big place”
even in G8 last week same thing “wow Russias a big place”

some people say you should not have a leader that has not been in a war zone
but a leader thats never stepped a foot of their country, come on

  30. Skeptic says:

If the Hezbollah actually captured O’Reilly we should make the Hezbollah pay us to take him back!

  33. Briseadh na Faire says:

When you learn how to read the subtext you understand their hidden motives and agenda. Here, for example, is one take of the subtext of Rush’s message:

“When all you care about is winning elections — when that’s all you care about is winning elections and figuring out talking points that will help you…”

“[We]‘ve got one core belief, and that’s winning elections, and then after that taking away as much of your money and your freedom as they can. But before they can do that they have to win an election….”

“Are we really a nation with the will to do what needs to be done in the war on terror?” (emphasis in original)

  34. Jackie says:

Let’s see the Bush policy. Blacks left for 5 days while Bush watch them on tv because the distance was to long for the troops to get to help them. While 2 days Bush got soldiers to Lebanon I wonder why maybe I should ask the NAACP it took him 5 years to show up with a lie. Now Rove is meeting with Iran spies to plant bombs at the boarder of Iran so the US can go to war. Nice move. Notice that American Jews went to Israel to join in the war but wouldn’t join the US military. Bush is giving the Saudis 6 billion dollars worth of weapons. We did the same thing with Iraq years ago so expect the same thing with the Saudis. We will be going to war with Saudi Arabia when the criminal Bush Administration considers them enemies. It always happens when you Bush wants what you have he turns on you.

This is just a sniff of the issues the thousands of Americans living overseas can expect when they look to the US Gov’t to “get them out.” I expect (and dread) that once the neocons dive into the Israel/Lebanon conflict it will not be safe for ANY American living overseas.

  37. DieNowForPeace says:

    #21 Bruce,
You’re right, but the fact is that this spoiled-brat, so called “World Leader” assumes everyone has their own private charter with escort to whisk them home in mere hours.

    Privliged little white people

The FOX crew, who didn’t go to Katrina and live like the po’ folk, didn’t go to Iraq because “it’s dangerous” and there’s no Perrier are bitchin’ about the US govt again failing it’s job to keep Americans safe? Sweden text-messaged all 5000 of it’s citizens and had them out of country in 48 hours. We’re the most technologically advanced nation on the planet, if someone knew what the hell they were doing we could have gotten ALL Americans out in 72 hours. But, the whine of the incompetant, that don’t give a damn for the Americans they are supposed to protect, is it’s a big complicated job and impossible. No it’s impossible for a moron but not a competent govt servant.

  39. Gerald Gibson says:

    They love America my ass.

    America == Americans. All Americans.

But the selfish, selfrighteous, two-faced, among us… you know them from grade school all through highschool and on into adulthood… you know who they are…. But these people only care for guess who… THEM AND THEIRS… yep .. they never change… and when they get in power with a BIG smile on their faces they make complete fools out of themselves and then hoot and howler afterwards about how great they were over and over like they got some kind of self-esteem problem.

And everybody else (Americans included) is just dirt… and they wonder why we dont give them a break about anything. We know in the end you would stab us in the back. We cant trust our liberties in your hands … we cant even trust Americas good name in your hands without you going out and murdering people without justice… supporting Israel blindly instead of supporting justice first … and then defense of Israel second… Places of power are not for Show offs.

We need real leaders who feel they have a job to do and are going to look at every situation with a level head so they can see where the strong footing is. We cant wipe the arabs out even when they keep attacking over and over because we know… and EVERYONE knows that we are NOT on strong ground in our actions. Israel would have been allowed to wipe out the arabs a long time ago if the arabs had no just right to make any demands… If Israel had just been sitting there for thousands of years minding their business and all the sudden arabs want to drink their blood .. then by all means bomb the arabs like we did Germany and Japan. Let them have it…. but we cant… be cause we are only partially right and the arabs are partially right. AND ONLY IDIOTS would keep going forwards killing each other without pointing out the area where both rights are together … and then change our standing to be standing over there… where we are completely right… and if the arabs want to join us then there will be peace… and if not… after we made things right on our end…. well then they just want war…

  40. Jason M. Hendler says:

Slowly, but surely, Americans are waking up to the reality that the world isn’t a nice place – whether you are in New Orleans, where they require the national guard to maintain peace and control, or overseas, where independent militias within weak nations have free reign in their region to start conflicts (Lebanon, Somalia, Sudan).

As China and India develop their economies, and the US economy loses those components of its economy that were wealth producing (textiles and manufacturing – commodities and medium to large ticket items), the “cozy” life that Americans once enjoyed will have been lost.

Trade deals, unions and minimum wage increases will only make America less competitive, and drive more jobs overseas, so our decline will be gradual, yet inevitable. American productivity is the only means by which our current standard of living will be maintained, and that can only be achieved through investment in educaton, training and technologies that increase productivity, which used to be tax deductable, but now aren’t. This policy has been hurting the American economy for years, and should be reversed.

  41. Willy says:

What’s the matter with those stupid Americans anyway? The news says Israel has been planning this attack for more than a year, so didn’t the people have plenty of time to get out harm’s way before Israel began their slaughter. And besides Bush is doing nothing about this situation, therefore what Israel is doing must be okay because Bush never makes mistakes. After all he talks to God.

    Whine, whine, whine.

  42. Jay Randal says:

The most recent one that comes to mind is when George I declared a unilateral cease-fire after the 100-hour assault to free Kuwait. There may be other, more recent examples.

  51. Pampero Firpo says:

Israel is learning the lesson the the neocons have yet to learn in Iraq–overpowering military might cannot defeat “terrorism.” You can kill terrorists, but it is obviously not a “zero sum” game–the more we kill the more others are recruited to take their place.

While I actually side with Israel in this war, (IE: I think it is for Lebanon to make the peace) I have to ask:

What has that got to do with the fact that American Citizens are not getting evacuated expediously? Or that they are being accused of being whining ingrates? Do you think that your post in some way excuses these personal attacks on the evacuees by Rush Limbaugh, Neil Cavuto, Mike Gallagher and Steve Doocy?

  55. Coffins draped with flags says:

Well, these whining, complaining American evacuees will be back in the States just in time to register to vote and they will be voting in November… and they will remember how the right wing trashed them when their lives were in danger… and they know which party panders to the right wing hate mongers… and they won’t be voting for GOP candidates .

America calls its Evacuees a bung of whining spoilt rotten little ingrate children for wanting the American government to get them out.

Ivy Leaguers were evacuated first from Lebanon by private security firms, while students from other schools had to wait days for the United States Embassy to make arrangements, according to ABC News.
“When fighting broke out in Lebanon, college students studying there for the summer anxiously awaited their turn to evacuate,” reports ABC’s The Blotter. “As it turns out, if you were an Ivy League student in Beirut, your turn came first.”
“Harvard, Princeton and Yale are insured by International SOS and Medex, two private security companies,” reports the Blotter.
International SOS have organized three evacuations since last Saturday. A press release says that the firm’s Lebanon Crisis Management team includes “50 people across different alarm centres and on the ground” who “have worked round the clock to achieve the mission of providing support to our clients and moving them to a safe environment.”
“Arriving with well-equipped teams, these companies arranged everything for students from land- and air-route evacuations, to hotel rooms, to cold bottles of water at the Syrian border,” ABC’s The Blotter reports.
“International SOS did a fantastic job,” Robert Mitchell, Director of Communications at Harvard University, told ABC.
Students left behind were upset at their schools and the government.
    courtesy of Rawstory.

    Way to go RUSH!!!
“One student who wanted to remain anonymous for security reasons said, ‘It was unfair that the private, wealthy schools were afforded the luxury of a quick evacuation,’” ABC reports. “Both her university and her government, she says, failed to help her out of a dangerous situation.”

they now have a fertile warground with sufficient public backing to allow israel to kill several thousands lebanese….

and, since the ‘progressives’ are only now beginning to condemn the action, the neocons can take the advantage and run with it.

Was Seth saying cease fires = peace treaties? No, he was asking when was the last cease fire that resulted in peace (presumably representable by a peace treaty.)

The most recent one that comes to mind is when George I declared a unilateral cease-fire after the 100-hour assault to free Kuwait. There may be other, more recent examples.

    Comment by Briseadh na Faire — July 21, 2006 @ 3:27 pm

Briseadh answered fairly forthrightly. He did not, you will not state that a cease fire is a peace treaty, simply that that last cease fire led to peace. The peace treaty came later.

Here’s the article again and Rove met with the Iran spies at the White House.

July 21, 2006 — Informed sources have told WMR that arch-neocon Michael Ledeen, who acts as an unofficial foreign policy adviser to Karl Rove, was at the White House yesterday with a group of Iranian opposition figures. Among the topics discussed was a promised $25 million grant by the Bush administration to the Iranian insurgents. The money is to be used to plant Desert Storm-vintage biological and chemical weapons shells, confiscated by U.S. forces in Iraq, on the Iranian side of the Iraqi border. The weapons will be used as “proof” of Iran’s plan to “attack” U.S. troops in Iraq. That will be used to justify, ex post facto, the coming U.S. attack on Iran. Our sources report that George W. Bush dropped by the White House meeting to offer his support to the Iranian opposition operatives.

The plan is the same as the invasion of Iraq. The US planeted weapons on the boarder so when there found the US can invade Iran and Syria based on those lies.
Remember Israel needs support so this way Bush can send troops in but notice American/Jews didn’t join in the invasion of Iraq or Afgan but it’s no problem for the US we can send minorities as their only numbers not human so who cares if they die.
My child is an active military officer but not worth a dime to the Bush Administration because he’s black and his value is less then an animal as Tony Snow pointed out with his Tar Baby all blacks look alike comment.

  105. Briseadh na Faire says:

Bruce, off topic here, but worth looking at MA’s ability to argue the facts:

BUT the largest single predictor if a child is more LKELY to live in poverty TODAY is having married parents.
    Comment by mighty aphrodite — July 20, 2006 @ 8:14 pm

[S]ingle mothers with dependent children have the highest rate of poverty across all demographic groups (Olson & Banyard, 1993). Approximately 60 percent of U.S. children living in mother-only families are impoverished, compared with only 11 percent of two-parent families. The rate of poverty is even higher in African-American single-parent families, in which two out of every three children are poor. http://hec.osu.edu/ famlife/ bulletin/ volume.1/ bullart1.htm

    Then there’s this:

The vast majority of children who are raised entirely in a two-parent home will never be poor during childhood. By contrast, the vast majority of children who spend time in a single-parent home will experience poverty. http://www.family.org/ cforum/ fosi/ marriage/ facts/ a0028317.cfm

“Amazingly, we’re not even going to charge these ungrateful evacuees for the free trip home. … Their sense of outrage and entitlement is slowly but surely becoming the American way. And it’s positively disgusting.”

The only thing disgusting is to think of your fellow American in danger (let alone, fellow man) in this manner, but to answer your questions to the 3 specific inquiries you had about my post:

    a) there are rightwingers (who i mostly don’t consider the “enemy”, just uninformed) who would hear these pundits talking about the Americans in Lebanon in such a disgraceful manner, and not think much of it because of the way it is framed.

    b) ie: using language they are already familiar with normally used to insight contempt of the poor and needy like “entitlement”

    c) Q: who are the “Israeli” bombs they are trying to escape supplied by?
A: us as in the U.S. Government

The truth is this blows their cover for their entire push for the “War on Terror” which is meant to supposedly protect Americans in the long run, correct? Well, if that were true, here is the perfect chance to support something that would get Americans out of immediate danger and they have nothing but contempt for these fellow American citizens.

I sit hear listening to CNN and other international news channels, seeing the information they are offering there viewers. First let me say I am neither on the right or the left, nor am I against the Jewish people or the people of Jordon or any other country. I am an American that is in self exile in another country. The reason I choose this, are my own and no I am not a criminal or a criminal in hiding. If I was I would not write this, back to the point…. The most of the people who make snide remarks about other people are usually those that lack self esteem or or the lack of some other virtue. Most of those love to attack others even tho they have never been to another country and what you know of the outside world is what you hear from the news or papers in the US., you feel so kool sitting there and saying things that you would not have the guts to say to a person to their face. When Hezbollah captured that Israeli Soldier and killed the other two across the border they were wrong as wrong as can be but also at the same time the Israelis are wrong for the tactics they are using also. It they are going to go after Hezbollah then by all means do so but not at the expense of innocent people No don’t get me wrong they are both wrong. And the Israelis have the right to go go after them. What I have found out is that the people in the States are not the people that I once knew.

1.Never would anyone in the US ever think… that torturing someone was the right thing to do.
2.Every use shock devices on children.
3.Never would a President I knew when I was in America ever think much less say the Constitution was nothing but a Goddamn piece of paper.
4.Never would a govt be so bold as to say they were above the law like this govt has done, and what laws they though they would have problems with they wrote new laws to go around them.
    5. There are so many things that are going wrong and yet the people just sit there and make snide remarks about people asking for help. I remember when Our Nation the USA gave help to everyone that asked for it. That was what my parents taught me. To always help those in need if you could help them.
6.People sending death threats to a 15 year American girl that disapproved of the War in Iraq.
7.The US Govt telling lies and I mean lies and they were on national TV also and then later tried to say they didn’t say them.

But now we start hearing about how this is going to be WW III. I guess that there are those that wish it was so but it isn’t. But he truth is that as long as there are people that want to take what some else has there are always going to be a conflict no matter what side they are on on. So before I start rambling on and on let me say don’t believe everything you see and hear on the news especially the American news. It seems that they are waving the NWO banner now also. What you see is in the USA is not even one 10 of what you see outside of the USA.

  134. Cyra Brown says:

BushCo has stood before the cameras, repeatedly telling us that they will do whatever is necessary, (as they see it) to ‘keep Americans safe.’ They have to be able to illegally wiretap our phones, have access to our phone records, without our knowledge, or consent, look at our banking transactions, also in secret, but they are doing it for us. Because keeping us safe is their number one task. America has supported ‘rebel groups’ operating in other countries for decades. We have assisted in overthrowing democratic governments, so we could replace them with Dictators, who would do what we wanted them to do. Reagan/Bush illegally sold weapons to Iran, to fund the Contra rebels, also illegal. We have even given money to the Taliban. Most recently, GWB was giving money to Somali Warlords, hoping they would keep Islamic leaders from controlling Mogadishu, which failed. BushCo sat back, and said Israel has the right to defend itself. Fine. They were well aware of how many Americans were in Lebanon. They couldn’t have been ignorant of what Israel was going to do. So they knew Americans were in Lebanon, and that Israel would attack Lebanon, and that they were not going to interfere, at least not any time soon. But they made no plan for the protection of our citizens. They can’t go to the FISA court for a warrent, because ‘it took to long, they had to act fast, American lives were at stake.’ Gawd! I am so SICK of their CRAP! I can only hope that some of those people coming back from Lebanon are Fox News watchers, or ‘Ditto Heads’, and hear for themselves what is being said about them. Maybe that will snap them out of it.

  135. JPark says:

I totally agree ex. You can look at history and blame anybody in this situation. I actually identify with the Palestinians but they are certainly not innocent. Israel has been killing Palestinians and the Palestinians have been killing Israelis. Hizbollah takes the side of the Palestinians. However, they want to wipe Israel off the map. Why is it that neo-cons think this is such a simple thing like the good guys vs. the terrorists? This is not a black and white issue.

  136. Right-winger says:

While it is understandable the dangers the evacuees experienced, many of them where complaining about the trip itself. Ashely Manaccoia (don’t know the spelling) complained about the food, the boat (a floating refugee camp!), the flies, and the heat. Every one of these evacuees should’ve had contingency plans in place because such events occur in this region frequently.

The evacuees should be thankful that:

    1. They are alive.

    2. The American ships have made a massive undertaking to get them out of Lebanon.

    3. Food was provided (and in some cases from the Navy Seals “Meals on Wheels” program).

Moving 25,000 people is a massive undertaking which cannot be accomplished overnight. What it boils down to is personal responsibility. When you visit Lebanon it should be well-known there are terrorists throughout the country. The State Department has a web-site that informs and warns visitors about each country they plan to visit. So in my book there is no excuse for not planning ahead and doing some research. http://travel.state.gov/

Rush Limbaugh was upset at the response of the evacuees concerning their trips on the boat, especially in the case of Ashley. Rather than bickering about her miserable circumstance she should have done what any American would do, and that is to ask “What can I do to help others?” Instead, she thought only of herself.

Any time you leave the USA you are on your own. The Constitution does not follow you. I have visited Second and Third World Countries and I can tell you that I make it a habit to research these countries before I leave. I have Plans A, B, C, and D in case there are problems. It’s high time people learned to take responibility for themselves and quit bickering about “This Administration.”

Since 2004 there have been four warnings about visiting Lebanon. They knew the risks. They knew the perils. The government will do all it can (and in this case it has done a remarkable job given the short time span) to help expatriates, but don’t bicker and moan if you weren’t served fillet mignon with a bottle of Chardonnay while being rescued. The idea in an evacuation is to preserve your life from potential harm, not to send you on a Carnival Cruiseline to Cyprus courtesy of us taxpayers.

And let’s not forget about the Lebanese who are left behind to undergo bombardment from the Israelis. While some Americans are griping about “This Administration” and the lousy food and the heat, try and realize that some of the Lebanese that were left behind may not see tomorrow’s sunrise!

You can make a Heaven out of Hell, or a Hell out of Heave. Take your pick.

Take for instance the labs and security sites… Hell anyone that works their can walk in with a laptop or a cell phone with a camera and what does the security people do ,should anyone say anything? Oh I know him known him for years he wouldn’t be a terrorist. There was a hacker from England that broke into their systems. Hell even on the news he stated how easy it was and how lack there security was. But now he’s been branded a terrorist.

They keep adding these dumb tariffs on the flights at the airports saying that it’s for security. They have been doing this for a long as I can remember at lease 30 years lol But have they learned anything? Yes how to take more of your money. oh sure they add a couple of guards but you would think that they would train them, more then they do. The excuses I have heard is “Hey I have got to babysit on that day or they call in sick or some other lame excuse.

Have yo ever been out to sea in a ship? No I don’t mean a cruse ship or a small boat I mean the cargo containers and the ships that use the sea routes in the Med or around south east Asia? I was one time and I couldn’t believe the Oil they had dumped in the Ocean to clean their tanks. Yes it is illegal to to do that but they do do it. Not everyone but a lot from what I understand from the crew on the ship I was on.

I always wonder why the news said that gas prices were due to the output of Oil when that a lie. Hell in Iraq the price for gas was 3 cents after the war stopped in Iraq. But now there paying what 1 US dollar to a gallon. Thank to the Oil companies that now control the Oil. Every time someone sneezes now the price of oil goes higher. And then I hear that maybe next year the price for a barrel of oil id going way above the 100 dollar mark. I guess this will make the people in the USA happy to know that they will pay 8 to 10 dollars a gallon. and forget what the people in Europe will pay for just a liter. Its not that they want to pay it but they have to cook and heat there houses in the winter time. Its not like in the USA when it get cold in the summer or fall you can turn on your heating system.. The heat is not turned on until the middle of OCT.
Okay! Okay! What is the point? There is so much corruption that it\s not funny. It\s like who has the biggest gang wins and that is just what they are in the USA now a gang. You don’t have to believe anything I say just clean out the garbage that has been pouring into your ears for years. I once told someone I loved that she would not believe me even if I could show her that black is black and white is white to include all the shades of gray in between and you know I was right. No I am not happy being right, I am unhappy because I wasn’t wrong.

I guess Rix failed to understand my point.

All of these Americans in Beruit were to know the risks involved. Plenty of information is available such as the link I had posted. You could argue that the Americans knew the risks and went voluntarily knowing that there will be trouble. But, then why bicker and complain about the conditions on the ships such as the food, the flies, and the heat? When you have 25,000 Americans stranded in Lebanon don’t you think there would be some chaos at some point? That’s an awful lot of people to rescue in a short time frame. But I guess Rix, Plunder, and his cronies would have come up with better solutions.

When it comes to being rescued someone has to be the first and someone has to be last. Yet some of them expect to be treated like Thurston Howell III.

As for sending the radical right into Lebanon, how about sending Rix into Damascus?

Most posts on this site are chock-full of conspiracy theories, apoplectic rage, and guesswork, i.e. Plunger. He fails to notice that Israel is the most hated nation on earth. Over six million died under Hitler’s hand, alone. But Plunger would probably say that the Holocaust never happened.

I’ll say it once again. It boils down to personal responsibility, which means taking the initative to plan ahead. While there were some Americans who had no choice but to be in Lebanon, there were others who were vacationing there. Since warnings about the perils of visiting Lebanon had been well known since 2004, why would anyone want to go there?

You had better know the risks before venturing into a foreign country. When doing so, you do it at your own risk, just like swimming in a pool at the Holiday Inn. These Americans should have registered with the Embassy right after they first arrived rather than log-jamming the system when the fighting broke out.

    Re #18:

Actually, GWB in the mid to late 90s did one long trip overseas, he went to Israel, was hosted by Ariel Sharon (this is before he regained power) shown all around Israel by Sharon, which is why once GWB came to power right after Sharon did he abandoned any pretense of neutrality for complete support for Sharon and Israel. I am actually a little surprised that this has been forgotten given the current situation as well as the pass Israel has been getting throughout the GWB Presidency. So given this, and given the sympathy Bush told Sharon he felt for the plight of the Israeli people no one should be surprised at what they are seeing now in terms of the green light Israel got to conduct a massive long planned military operation throughout Lebanon over the ostensible need/desire to rescue the two soldiers. Does anyone really think they have any chance of coming out of this alive by this point? I rather doubt it, indeed Israel may end up killing them as part of the collateral damage of their massive bombardments of Hezbollah positions along with the civilian infrastructure and housing.

Let me tell you a story from the Bible,

A Good Samaritan came across a person in distress on the road. He looked the situation over and saw that the man truly needed help. He then remembered a lesson he learned from his Fox-watching Conservative “Christian” father and said, “Sorry, you got yourself into this mess.. it’s your personal responsibility” and continued on his way carefully adjusting his WWJD wristband.

Israel GAVE the 97% of the West Bank and all of the Gaza Strip to the Palestinians. Talk about a concession of land!! There is no other country in the world who seeks peace more than Israel.
    Comment by Right-winger — July 22, 2006 @ 2:06 pm

This was no gift; a more appropriate wording would be “Israel withdrew from the occupied terrotories of Gaza and the West Bank after years of defying UN resolutions calling for Israel’s retreat from those territories”. You must remember Israel always called these occupied land “territory in dispute” when, in fact, they simpy occupied land.

Israel’s withdrawal was hardly a concession -not to mention the Golan Heights that still haven’t been returned to Syria- but it was done to comply with numerous UN resolutions.

Israel gave away Southern Lebanon as long as Hezbollah would retreat. (…) Israel is forced to do what the Lebanese government should have done back in 2000.

There you go again: Israel did not “give away” anything. They returned occupied land.

Israel’s heavy-handed response is targetting civilian infrastructure in what amounts to collective punishment and in violation of international law.

Dude I don’t know what material you are made of, but you see, except the right wing, the rest of the human race has this little thing called empathy. The way it works is that you “understand” the pain of the other person who happens to be in a bad situation. The way the right wing works is to point and laugh at anyone who is in trouble and deride them for being weak.
‘O you got raped and murdered – obviously its your fault’! Its your world view and no matter what I say is not going to make any bloody difference.
However before I leave I have just one question if it was a loved one of yours in Beirut right now, I would like to see you say “o my dear you bitch so much”

  160. Gregor Samsa says:

    Ren,

You need a reading comprehension course.

That “concession” is/was no such thing. It was done in compliance with UN resolutions. That was my point, and I thought I made it clear.

I have no clue what is it that you are trying to argue, but “finders keepers” does not apply for international affairs let alone for land grabs. Not anymore, that is.

  161. mighty aphrodite says:

Gregrrrr – Your side must have given up “the land grab” position after the demise of the Soviet Union….As you admit to being clueless about a conservative argument re: let me make this as succinct as Ren mentioned. Egypt, Jordan and Syria were losers in a war and Israel was the WINNER. (FYI – losers DON’T get to call the shots unless they’re Democratic losers and then they call lawyers….(i.e. Japan and Germany did not have alot of input on their surrender agreements.)

Your expertise of Un resolutions begs the question – please explain Hezbollah’s continued occupation of southern Lebanon in VIOLATION of Resolution 1559. (Come to think of it, I think the best thing the UN does is sell UNICEF Christmas Cards…. )

  162. Cyra Brown says:

‘Right-winger’ speaks about ‘personal responsibility’, and the need to ‘plan ahead’. Too bad he doesn’t apply these standards to BushCo. When tensions increased between Israel and Lebanon, why did BushCo fail to ‘plan ahead’ for the potential need to get 25,000 Americans out of Lebanon? Instead, Americans in Lebanon should have anticipated that our Government would sit back, and do nothing to intervene, and would even approve of their (Israel’s) response. Yeah, how short-sighted of them. But if any Americans should happen to die in this conflict, BushCo would be ALL over it , and would be pointing at Hezbollah as the ones who were responsible. And their failure to plan ahead would be forgotten.

As you admit to being clueless about a conservative argument re: let me make this as succinct as Ren mentioned.
    Comment by mighty aphrodite — July 23, 2006 @ 7:42 pm

Thanks for the (unneeded) lesson in history, as I am fully aware of the six-day war. Had you actually understood my responses to right-winger and ren, repeating my point would be unnecessary.

I will repeat my point to you hoping it will sink in: Israel’s retreat from the occupied territories was no concession, but a compliance with UN resolutions. You, as a lawyer, should understand that complying with a legal mandate is no “concession”.

My point is as simple as that. If you have a counter-argument to that, let’s have it. If not, stop making yourself look foolish.

(…)please explain Hezbollah’s continued occupation of southern Lebanon in VIOLATION of Resolution 1559.

And you call yourself a lawyer?

Your reading comprehension skills are so lacking, it’s no even funny. Is this supposed to be a trick question?

First, let’s get some facts straight: Hezbollah could not have “occupied” Southern Lebanon as they are a Lebanese militia.

Resolution 1559 called for foreign (meaning Syrian) forces to withdraw from Lebanon, and for all Lebanese militias to disband.

If Hezbollah has violated Resolution 1559 is because they have failed to disband, not because they are “occupying” Lebanon.

Please -you are embarrasing yourself and anyone who reads this exchange.

Even though the ships to carry them have to cross an ocean to get there. Anyone going to the middle east is aware that a high level of risk is present. Anyone acting surprised during this period is absurd.

    Mighty Aphrodite,

Your line of argumentation is nonsensical. Hezbollah is a Lebanese group with both a political and an armed wing. This is widely known, as it is the fact that they hold seats in the Lebanese parliament. It is also known that Hezbollah was created in the 1980s to fight against the Israeli occupation of their country.

Trying to prove they are not Lebanese because they may or may not fly the Lebanese flag is an exercise in utter futility.

If you have links to show Hezbollah is a foreign force in Lebanon, please share them. Otherwise you simply have no ground to stand on.

  174. S.F. Wilson says:

The sad thing is a lot of those who were recued, are probably Bush supporters. Now they get the chance to see what Bush really thinks about them. If they vote in the midterm elctions and support these same Fascists, they will continue to support the people who stabbed them in the back.

What is even funnier is that you claim they all thought my arguments were speculative, since you were the one speculating over Hezbollah’s flag. I merely stated a fact that is widely known: Hezbollah holds seats in the Lebanese parliament.

But that’s not all: you claim you knew my arguments were irrelevant -yet you engaged me and replied over and over.

  180. Bush-I wouldnt trust him to babysit says:

More Americans are waking up everyday to how bad their administration really is. But its probably too litlle and far too late. Unfortunately America has had an appaling reputation abroad for a very long time, and deep down I feel that a different govt wouldnt make that much of a difference, at least to us non Americans. Helping to weaken and overthrow legitimately elected governments is a favourite pastime of American government. Never forgetting to preach “democracy” to its people and the sanctity of democracy, of course. The problem is rooted deeper than this administration. Although Bush and co take the biscuit for blatant insults to its people and the world, and the repetetive, unrelenting lying. The USA govt usually only insults the intelligence of non Americans and reasonably educated Americans. It seems they are now insulting the intelligence of Americans who have very little intelligence. The only ones left backing the administration cannot help but come across as Nazi like zealots, or the kind of citizens that point to Australia on the world map as being North Korea and Tazmania as being South Korea. As long as politicians from both camps, have stakes in big business, various monetary enterprises, investments etc that benefit as a direct result of decisions and policy making nothing will get better. Conflicts of interest, most notably at the very highest levels of administration, results in a heartless government that puts personal wealth before its people. America is heading towards a police state, and I honestly cant see how things set in motion can be reversed……well I can. Voilent revolution!!
