Snow: ‘Nobody Has Been More Diplomatically Active Than We Have’ On The Middle East Peace Process

This morning on the Today Show, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow argued that “nobody has been more diplomatically active than we have” in the Middle East, citing all the phone calls White House officials have made in recent days:

Watch it:

Tony Snow

Real diplomacy requires more than just phone calls. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger famously went to the region and used “shuttle diplomacy” — meeting repeatedly with each party — to negotiate “disengagement agreements between Israel, Syria, and Egypt” following the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Similarly, in 1996, Secretary of State Warren Christopher spent “seven days shuttling between Damascus and Jerusalem” and successfully negotiated a “truce between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas.” President Bill Clinton visited Israel in the midst of the 1996 terrorist attacks by Hamas to show U.S. support.

In contrast, the Bush administration has taken a “hands off approach,” and has derided diplomatic efforts as “naive and ineffectual.” Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will finally visit the region next week, but has rejected calls to press for a cease-fire.

    Full transcript below:

MATT LAUER: Alright, let’s talk about the Secretary of State. She’s going to travel to the region next week. Critics say it’s too little too late, what’s your response?

TONY SNOW: The critics got it wrong. The United States has been very actively engaged on the diplomatic front ever since the beginning of this. Secretary Rice has spoken repeatedly with leaders throughout the region. The President has been picking leaders and speaking with leaders who are not only in the neighborhood, but in the position to provide leverage and influence over the governments who are chiefly responsible for supporting Hezbollah, that would be Iran and Syria. He’s spoken with the King of Saudi Arabia, he’s spoken with the King of Jordan, he’s spoken with the President of Egypt, he’s spoken with the prime minister of Turkey. Every day the departments of state and defense are on the phone with colleagues throughout the region, every day the national security advisor.

So what I’m saying here is that people are talking about too little too late in diplomacy, they may not be keeping the scorecard. But the fact is, nobody has been more diplomatically active than we have.

Yeah, it also requires "feeling like" telling Kofi to make phone calls.

    14. Briseadh na Faire Says:

Do you know how many phone calls it takes to block a cease-fire when every body except the U.S. and Israel want one? That a lot of work. That hard work. Hard work.

We're active, diplomatically, in the Middle East. Speakin' of middle, did y'all see that pig? Now that's what I'm talkin' about...diplomacy, sittin' down and eating wild pig. And I proved I can do two things at once...to the whole world. Y'all saw me eatin' and talkin' at the same time, didn't ya? That's hard work. Glad it wasn't a pretzel, though.

Yeah, and I was talkin' to Tony 'bout the Middle East. You know, they don't eat pigs over there. Maybe that's their problem, never had a good rack of ribs. Speakin' of ribs, did ya'll get a look at that German ladies face when I tried to make nice with a good ole fashioned Texas style neck rub? Man, she needs to lighten up.

Which brings us to Israel. I told them to lighten up. But hey, they got a right to defend themselves against the terrorists. Like we did after 9/11. We took it straight to the terrorists responsible and hit them with shawk and awl. Take that Saddam! Mission Accomplished! yessiree.

And that's active diplomacy, Texas style. Next question?

Gosh what will the Islamofacists do after they have proclaimed a lasting peace with Israel this time? If history is a clue I guess they will:

    34. Jackie Says:

Tony Snowjob forgot the tell the press about the Bush/Cheney plan. Wayne Madsen has put it on his web site as follows:

July 21, 2006 -- Informed sources have told WMR that arch-neocon Michael Ledeen, who acts as an unofficial foreign policy adviser to Karl Rove, was at the White House yesterday with a group of Iranian opposition figures. Among the topics discussed was a promised $25 million grant by the Bush administration to the Iranian insurgents. The money is to be used to plant Desert Storm-vintage biological and chemical weapons shells, confiscated by U.S. forces in Iraq, on the Iranian side of the Iraqi border. The weapons will be used as "proof" of Iran's plan to "attack" U.S. troops in Iraq. That will be used to justify, ex post facto, the coming U.S. attack on Iran. Our sources report that George W. Bush dropped by the White House meeting to offer his support to the Iranian opposition operatives.

Now that's the plan watch for the media to say how shocked the Administration was to find these weapons and that what they said was right thereby the US will attack Iran and Syria like we invaded Iraq based on a lie. If it worked once it will work again and Americans will find out later that Bush lied again.

    64. JW Says:

Listen--Clinton did a commendable job being engaged in the Middle East in the 1990s, but the fact of the matter is that Clinton presided over a very different period in the Middle East. By the time Clinton left office in January 2001, the Middle East had seen four months of heavy violence and the peace process was dead. There was really no chance of getting back to the table--Arafat had proven that he was unwilling to deliver a final settlement because it would put his life at risk, and Israelis were slapping themselves for having trusted Arafat enough to recognize and arm him. Comparing Clinton's active diplomacy to Bush's is really comparing apples and oranges. It's much easier to mediate a conflict when both sides are presumably working towards the same goal than when both sides have lost all faith in each other. Give Bush crap for his bungling of Iraq and how he has messed up the Greater Middle East. But his policy on the Israeli-Arab conflict has basically mirrored that of past presidents, in understanding that before there can be negotiations, there has to be a cessation of violence.

    69. Anon Says:

Syria has at least one division poised on the border, and some predict an Israeli invasion could trigger one from Syria as well. A look at the map shows that reasoning to be quite valid. Syria at one point had friends all around and its pick of resupply routes, but no longer. Turkey, a member of NATO and a putative US ally, lies to the north, along with a lot of ethnic Kurds that do not much like the Assad regime. Jordan, another US ally, lies to the south, along with Israel. To the east used to be an Iraq led by their Ba'athist cousins, but now has an American military contingent of 135,000 battle-hardened troops. Their only outlet comes through Lebanon to the Mediterranean, and if Israel takes control, the Syrians are bottled up, and they know it.

This war will almost certainly happen at some point, absent multiple coups in Syria and Iran, and it might be better to have it now, rather than when Iran has nukes. Everyone knows that Damascus and Teheran sponsors global Islamofascist terror, and we can't stop it unless we stop them both. It still would be preferable to get the nations of the world to agree to isolate both nations and bring terrorism to an end peacefully -- but the Europeans still believe in appeasement, and Russia and China want to play superpower games instead.

"Nobody" is right. If 'nobody' was a person, or another government, they would be doing more, right now, than BushCo has been doing, diplomatically. By dragging their heels, they are showing the entire world that they will never have any interest in peace in the Middle East. Aside from the other members of the U.N. Security Council sending their own troops to restrain Israel, allowing for a cooling off period, and forcing Israel to address the issues that have contributed to the current situation, such as holding more than 3,000 Palestinian women and children behind bars, without charges. Israel has done it's fair share of contributing to the problems in the Middle East, and for any resolution to have any hope of succeeding, ALL sides must accept responsibility for their actions. Blame placing and finger pointing, (sound familiar?) does nothing but piss people off. So, just drop it and focus on fixing it.

the condi 'lord jesus' remark link is here...

the delay quote originated in harpers...there is more here:

      * "At church one day (DeLay) listened as the pastor (John Hagee), urging his flock to support the administration, declared that 'the war between America and Iraq is the gateway to the Apocalypse.' DeLay rose to speak, not only to the congregation but to 225 Christian TV and radio stations. 'Ladies and gentlemen' he said, 'what has been spoken here tonight is the truth of God.'"

LaHaye, John Hagee, and other Dispensationalists contend that the war in Iraq is biblical prophecy, supported by a literal reading of several of the Bible's verses referring to that region of the world. These individuals therefore support the war not for political or social reasons, but rather because it is a biblical requirement for the second coming of Christ, and thus the Rapture. This reality is argued openly by followers, including LaHaye.

Briseadh na Faire, i will not vouch for 100% of plunger's post because i am not familiar with all of it, but, i am guessing that if you do some checking, most, if not all of it, is verifiable.

Diplomatically active, huh? So that's what they call it.
What about the newspaper report this morning that the US is expediting arms shipments to Israel for their attacks in Lebanon? How does that differ from Iran sending arms to hezbollah?
We are stalling on diplomacy (let Israel get a good foothold first) and we are not demanding a ceasefire (they can hear our phone calls over the sound of bombs and missiles) but we want the middle East to find peace. Yeah, right.

    116. james risser Says:

Why is it that if anyone dares to criticize Israel, the are immediately branded as "anti-semitic"? Can there be no objective assessment regarding the behavior of this spoiled brat of a country? How many innocent Palestinian and Lebanese citizens will it take to satisfy Israel's seemingly insatiable appetite for blood and war? Whomever believes that the nation of Israel truly desires peace, is either a fool or a liar to himself or both. I can't say how happy I am to be many thousands of miles from these barbarians. My sympathy to those who are not as fortunate.

    140. TiredOfBush Says:

As part of their "demand" to end their murderous seige in Lebanon, Israel wants the Lebanese army to surrender their arms and heavy artillery. Is this a joke or what? If Lebanon agrees to such a plan they would have signed their own death warrant as a country, with Israel choosing the time of the execution. Even though the Lebanese army has little chance of inflicting any substantial pain on the instigators, at least they are fighting and valiantly defending their country's honor - something any patriot worth his salt would do.

    141. mighty aphrodite Says:

#148 - Jay - Jews are more than 1% of Dem Party; AND they sure donate ALOT more than 1% of of receipts collected by the Dem Party and candidates. But you knew that...

Dear ToB - What's that old saying - if it walks like a duck? Well you might be the most neighbourly person God ever made - but you sure sound like an anti-Jewish bigot. When you display stupidity - don't be surprised when someone calls you stupid. You refer to a democratic country, which has been repeatedly attacked for 58 years by suicide bombers (al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, the PLO, etc) as a "terrorist state", and indicate a gross misunderstanding of history and a penchant for gullibility.

YOU are completely wrong about Israel wanting to disarm the Lebanese army - they only wish the Lebanese army was strong enough to destroy Hezbollah. But if the Lebanese army throws in with Hezbollah, Israel will take them on. (Having Hezbollah in Lebanon is like a house infested with cock roaches - they will take over poor Lebanon unless they have an epiphany, mend their ways or are put down.) But to easily illustrate for you the depth of your moral relativism answer the following:

IF Israel were to disarm completely and disband their armed services, do you think Islamic extremists would:
a.) allow Israel to co-exist with them side-by side?
b.) attempt to destroy Israel and "wipe her off the face of the map" ?

IF all terror groups and nation-states who still have a stated goal to wipe out Israel were to completely disarm:
a.) would Israel attempt to wipe them out?
b.) would Israel attempt to live as neighbours?

Untill you answer those questions, I'll continue to consider you an anti-Jewish bigot. Were off to the beach - that should give you plenty of time to "think" of your answer....

Israel has show time and again, that it is irresponsible when it is entrusted with the power of heavy arms. So far, despite all the cries that its Arab neighbors want to "wipe Israel from the map", no such advance has been made by any of the countries that Israel is claiming to hold such views. It is Israel that is actively engaged in said action. And even so, given Israel's belligerent and murderous nature, it would be reasonable for these countries to harbor such feelings, as most of their citizens have lost loved-ones at the hand of the bully, Israel. And before anyone gets too twitty, and hurling the tired "anti-semite" slur my way, I say "keep it". I will stand up for oppressed people, regardless of their religious or political beliefs (or no beliefs). This is about the injustice of one group of strong, privileged humans decimating weaker humans. Israel must pay for these crimes against humanity. No more "Peace Process"!

    151. Boo Hoo Who Says:

Here we go with the "I'm MUCH more intelligent than you" crap!

      Let's break this down...
Israel is a pain in the ass to America.

AIPAC lobbies the money whores in congress and they sell out the USA's taxpaying public (isn't this taxation without representation) for the blood money coming from Israel, that (more than likely) is the RE-funneling of US taxpayer monies back into the US! This needs to stop, along with AIPAC getting a free meal ticket and NOT having to register as what it IS, a foreign government agency operating on US soil.

The architects of this "pre-emptive" assault on the middle east were names like Perle, Feith, Kristol, Wolfowitz etc... they sure weren't Smith and Jones, and happen to have dual-Israeli citizenship.
      Don't think so?
Douglas Feith has allegedly flown the coop to Israel, where he cannot be extradited back to the USA for questioning concerning his role in the scandals.

The reporting (or so called reporting) of the middle east and their (so-called) "experts" always have names like Indyk, Krauthammer, Kristol (there's THAT name again) and the like......notice a trend. No Smith or Jones here.

Yet merely OBSERVING this fact, gets you labeled in order to silence you, and prevent OBJECTIVE discussion of the GIANT ELEPHANT in the room.

Billions of dollars to Israel and what return do we (the taxpayer) get for our investment?
The middle finger from Israel, hatred from Arabs in the region, endless propaganda on TV, more rhetoric from the "experts" (who happen to be pro-Israeli) the patriot act (a misnomer) the NSA spying on the US citizens, and the AIPAC SPY scandal spying on the USA.
Jack Abramoff, Scooter Libby, and a host of other miseries.
If ISrael were an investment, we would have dumped it years ago for a crap return!

Walt and Mearsheimer published the "Israeli Lobby" paper, and every concerned citizen should read it, and form their own opinions.

The USA needs to get the hell out of the middle east and take care of this mess it has gotten itself in, pronto.

I care about America...and if you live in America you probably should too.

    152. kevin Baker Says:
