The Bolton blitz begins.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee announced today it will hold fresh hearings on the nomination of U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, who failed to be confirmed by the Senate last year. The hearings are set for next Thursday, and the White House has scheduled Bolton on multiple Sunday morning news shows this weekend.

Methinks the preznit wants to get Bolton confirmed by the majority BEFORE they turn into the minority in November. Washington — Management reform at the United Nations might be a matter of life and death, but a large bloc of counties actively is opposing proposed changes, says U.S. Ambassador John Bolton.
Testifying at a House subcommittee hearing May 2, the United States’ U.N. ambassador said in prepared remarks that the Oil-for-Food scandal is emblematic of what happens in U.N. programs when independent oversight, transparency and accountability are ignored.
Not only can waste and corruption occur, he said, but the critical services and humanitarian supplies meant for vulnerable populations are not delivered. The Oil-for-Food Program in Iraq was established to provide food and medicine for the Iraqi people by allowing Iraq to sell oil during U.N. sanctions. Instead, the program resulted in more than 2,000 companies paying kickbacks to Saddam Hussein’s regime, which then diverted the $1.8 billion it received to its own coffers. (See related article.) “[W]hen we are discussing management reform, we are ultimately talking about people’s lives,” Bolton said.

The Senate will not change hands. All the Dems need though is one chamber to make a few waves. Six months ago, it looked better for Democrats. The changing events at home and in the world have them on the defense. Their “climate of corruption” theme has backfired on them. Not to mention recent resolution votes on Iraq and the Israel military situation shows them to say one thing, then vote another……..

…Manydiplomats say they see Mr. Bolton as a stand-in for the arrogance of the administration itself
… he combatively asserts American leadership, contests procedures at the mannerly, rules-bound United Nations and then shrugs off the organization when it does not follow his lead.
Six ambassadors separately offered similar accounts of an incident in June… All were from nations in Europe, the Pacific and Latin America that consider themselves close allies of the United States, and they asked to speak anonymously.
Mr. Bolton that day burst into a packed committee hall, produced a cordless microphone and began to lecture envoys from developing nations about their weakening of a proposal to tighten management of the United Nations, his chief goal.
Gaveled to silence, he threw up his hands and said, “Well, so much for trying something different.â€
It was not merely rude… “He just busted us apart.”
… 30 ambassadors consulted in the preparation of this article..share the United States’ goal of changing United Nations management practices, expressed misgivings over Mr. Bolton’s leadership.
An envoy of a country close to the United States complained that Mr. Bolton often stayed away from meetings, leaving ambassadors in the dark about American positions, then produced 11th-hour amendments and demands for reopening points that had been painfully muscled into consensus.
On June 30, Mr. Bolton stunned a group of allied ambassadors. As they waited .. to approve a plan to review thousands of outdated and redundant directives, word arrived that Mr. Bolton had cut a side deal to postpone the effort.
