There's more embryonic stem cell research going on in the USA than anywhere else. It us privately funded not government funded.
Adult stem cell research is privately and government funded in the US. And is quite robust thank you very much.
The adult stem cell technology to do the above mentioned human trials was developed in the USA by a USA company.
The human trials are being conducted in the UK and elsewhere because it is much less costly to do it in the UK than the US because of lawyers and government oversight and Institutional Review Boards that are afraid of getting sued. All of which are relaxed in the UK compared to the US.
Many people think that an embryo is a human person.
Many of them come to this conclusion logically not through faith or emotion.
To kill human beings [embryos] in order to do research on them would therefore be illicit.

Anyone else notice the fact that he misused the word "ameliorate" here? You can ameliorate a situation, but diseases need cures. It must be his favorite 50-cent word, because if you saw the whole interview, you remember he used that word 4 times in a half-hour interview. Idiot.

Karl Rove MAKES UP a lot of stuff. Lies a whole bunch too. Yup, he's one we should turn to for factual information. Tell it to a country that doesn't know better.

HEART FAILURE!

If anyone in my family suffers from untreatable heart failure, I'm taking them to Bangkok for an adult stem cell treatment.

Don Ho, the Hawaiian crooner couldn't walk across the room last November. In December he was treated with stem cells from his blood and resumed his 1.5 hour show January 22, 2006. See www.vescell.com

Search www.clinicaltrials.gov for "adult stem cell treatments" and read the 1,075. Search for "embryonic stem cell treatments" and read about two embryo manipulations studies.

Visit www.stemcellrearch.org for a list of 72 diseases treated by adult stem cells.

There is no proof-of-concept yet that embryonic stem cells will do anything for anyone.

Embryonic stem cell research has continued unabated world wide with hundreds of millions of dollars for eight years and it has not resulted in one treatment for anyone, anywhere and there is no proof it ever will. You would think there would be at least a proof-of-concept.

Love to all,

Yup. As the this thread demonstrates, the debate around using stem cells, which would otherwise be discarded, for live saving research is not even close. Even many pro-lifer's recognize that it is pro-life to use them stem cells for life-saving research rather than to waste them in the trash.

The best the "I am always" right'ers can do is throw out a lot of typical conservative FUD on the issue by arguing, among others:

1. There are enough embryonic stem cells already. Wrong. Existing government-approved lines are old and stale, and seriously hampering research.

2. Adult stem cells are as good as embryonic stem cells. Wrong again. And not according to the majority of stem cell scientists, who rightly observe that embryonic stem cells have unique properties and hold by far the greatest promise for life-saving cures.

3. Private research is sufficient. Wrong again. More government funding and support is needed to really advance this science. And current restrictions around existing government spending require that when universities conduct embryonic stem cell research not using the official old stale cell lines, they need to build whole new labs and use all new equipment which are "clean" from any government funding. This places a huge drag on research.

4. The government is not imposing a religious value. Really? It's just another coincidence that the religious right to which Bush panders so, wants to keep suppressing this? How many times do the Bush Republicans have to keep assuring us that they are not attempting to impose their religious values through our government? Constitutional amendments to ban gay marriage? Pushing for prayer in schools? No birth control taught in schools? Fighting contraception in third world nations that desperately need it? Saving us from the evils of gambling (but strangely just on the Internet, not in Vegas)? No abortion option? Saving the world on a "crusade" in the Middle East? Saving the world from the "Axis of Evil" (which by the way are all more of a threat since the Bush Republicans branded them morally "evil"). Come on. This President is obviously on what he thinks is a mission ordained by the Christian God and the Bush Republicans are happy to jump on the bandwagon to max out voter support from the religious right.

5. The use of embryonic stem cells due to be discarded for research is the beginning of a "slippery slope" to broader uses that are immoral. The slippery slope argument can always be made. We have to balance what's here and now.

6. Lots of other silly, stretched analogies. One poster went so far as to claim nonsensically: "The intent to create and use humans as a commodity for other humans lowers our value of life. My objection, and I believe that of President Bush is toward the intent of the use. For example, people may die in car crashes, but we don't design cars to deliberately kill people as a means of population control. Even IF population control could be argued by some top scientists to be in our best interests." A+ for creativity - and I wonder if the rest of us can be this creative. Really. Let's please stick to the facts and results before us.

Real living human being are dying and suffering who could be saved by this promising research, and these needed embryonic stem cells which are being tossed (1) are tiny little thoughtless cells not even close to people and (2) are gone either way. The Democrats, the American public, Nancy Reagan, Orin Hatch and a lot of Republicans recognize this. Once again, the majority of the Bush Republicans are “out there.” The stem cell debate is just another failure in a long line of them by our currently lacking government.

Bush and Laura not having babies for five years? Hmmmmmmm
Birth control pulls don't allow fertilized eggs to implant. Do ya think Bush was wearing rubbers for five years?
Hmmm, those fertilized eggs were ok to kill?
