How come we never hear of Michael Lerner and TIKKUM? I am learning there are serious divides between Jewish public opinion. We just do not get that thru
the American mainstream media. Why is that?

Are people like Michael Lerner suppressed in expressing his or TIKKUM’s point of view.? Incredible, since I thought we were the land of free speech!!! I will definitely check out Mr. Lerner’s website.

Yes I am passionate about this subject as I wish more people were, I just do not like to see the horrors of any war, past or present. If anything ,Americans have never been invaded by a country’s air force, so most of them should keep their SUV parked in the driveway, walk more, and protest against any war….!!!!!!
Incidentally, I live and work in a big city and walk as much as I can. I refuse to contribute to our need for foreign oil so I sold my car!!!

I can’t be sure whether most Jews support the Iraq war but I know as a matter of fact that many do not. Michael Lerner and the progressive Tikkum Magazine group that he leads is very much opposed to the war and is often very critical of Israeli policies. I’ve heard it said that he or his followers have actually suggested that Israelis should consider giving up Israel for the cause of peace and for their own safety and emigrate to the US, though that certaionly is not his official position. On the other side, the ultra-ultra Orthodox Satmar Chasidic group hates Israel almost as much as Hamas, calling it an abomination as it was founded by “atheist” Zionists and not by the Messiah as the Torah says it will be. Satmar speakers have appeared on the same platform as El Fatah speakers. I myself would never have voted Likud if I lived in Israel as I don’t believe a constant hard line approach can work and because Israel must give up control of the occupied territories if peace can ever come about.

I did support the Iraq war originally because I believed Bush when he said that Saddam had WMD since Clinton supposedly had said pretty much the same thing (so much for the myth that Jews are smarter than everyone else!) Now, since I, along with most everyone else who has sense, have realized that Bush either lied to get us in or at best was grossly incompetent, I am opposed to continuing it and want us to get out ASAP if that can be done without causing even more damage. I know many other Jews who feel the same.

I think it’s also quite clear that the Iraq war has hurt Israel since a good argument could be made that the Hamas electoral victory and the current Lebanese war are due to the instability that the Iraq war has caused. In any event, if the purpose behind the US going into Iraq was to help Israel, it sure as hell didn’t work and I don’t believe Jews could be that dumb!

Are not most Jewish-Americans in favor of Bush’s
stance on the war in the Mideast! Which is hard to believe since Jewish-Americans have always been a solid Democratic bloc.

The 24 hour news networks all show the current administration, army leaders,pundits side-by-side with Jewish Prime Ministers(current and previous), Jewish army leaders,etc. That scares alot of Americans today.
All Americans,including me, do not want to see anyone innocent hurt on both sides, but there is so much Pro-War being promulgated by the media. WHY? America has lost enough men fighting for its freedoms.

AS far as this 1559 resolution, it has only been in effect for 2 years. There was a similar resolution asking Israel not to occupy Lebanon and it took Israel 18 YEARS
to leave Lebanon.
Why is it OK for one resolution to take 18 years and the other to take 2?

Well, it 2 questions. What proof do you want first: that routes have existed or that US military have disrupted the routes?

However, I think Israel has overreacted in this instance. And in general, “terrorists” are treated in such ways as to create more “terrorists”. Israel isn’t the only one guilty of this; we Americans, the Russians, etc., have also done this and we are continuing to do so. The reason I put quotes around “terrorist” is that I think this term is used WAY too indiscriminately. “Terrorist” or “freedom fighter” or ” fighting off the yoke of the invader” or “fighting off the yoke of the infidel”: how these terms are applied depends very much on the viewpoint of those applying them.

Israel would have been correct to go after those who actually kidnapped the soldier or soldiers. Bombing civilian airports and killing noncombatants and strafing half a country, those are overreaction, and Israel is reaping and will reap the whirlwind. Israel is only creating more Hezbollah members for now and at least the next generation. This pattern can be seen over and over again in Israel’s roughly 60 years of existence, just as it could be seen in Ireland, Spain (Basques), etc., etc. Is this present tragic situation going to magically turn out different?

But there are Israelis who say the same thing about Muslims. And the number of people Israel has killed since its existence outnumber the Israelis killed by a considerable margin.
