So yes, Kathryn, you are fighting a war. And your e-mailer is ignorant about how wars are fought, about how wars are won and lost, and about the way the world actually works.

No, Cliff. Neither is Ms. Lopez fighting a war, nor does she need you projecting your own insecurities on her to make your defensive posturing look like a chivalrous defense. You’re only fooling yourself. While her original remarks seemed appropriate to me, I’m nevertheless impressed with how gently she handled someone else who disagreed and how much humility she displayed when honoring those who are actually in harms way.

This “war” of ideas is not a war. It’s metaphor — a rhetorical device. Maybe if you always used quotes when using it in a figurative sense (raised double-two-finger air quotes when speaking), you might begin to understand what she does. It’s not the prettiest prose, but it might help you grasp reality again.

Mr. Griffin isn’t even REMOTELY a structural engineer so for him to even mention something that is way out of his relm of expertise, i.e. claims about why the towers couldn’t have collapsed alone from the planes crashing into them, is asinine in and of itself. Not to mention the fact that he is not an expert on military protocol or FAA procedures in an emergency.

The way these characters keep dragging out Churchill is rather pathetic. Churchill was arguably the greatest man of the century but until 1939 his career was chequered to put it mildly. Had he died in 1938 he would have been perceived as a failure. What’s dangerous about all this is the essential hyperpole contained in all these comparisons. Hussein or Bin Laden are Hitler. This is a war as important as the second world war etc. What it leads to is a completely wrong diagnosis of the problem and hence the treatment required. Hitler was the undisputed leader of the greatest military power of his time. It took the combined all out efforts of the three most powerful states in the world six years to subdue him. He had conquered all Europe and had he defeated Britain was in the position to threaten the very existence of the USA. In no sense do Bin Laden, Hussein, Ahman?? threaten the existence of the USA, they are as someone once said a nuisance. A serious nuisance but nonetheless a nuisance. It like the difference between kidney stones and lung cancer. Unfortunately Bush and these freedom fighters at NRO are treating a nuisance ailment as if it were life threatening when it isn’t with the consequence of tons of collateral damage that have impeded the war on terrorism and done huge damage to our reputation and diplomatic leverage. Let’s face it the freedom fighters have one agenda only and it’s not the primacy of American interests or protection of American lives, it’s the continuance in power of the Republican party. That’s there agenda, so one wonders why we treat their rantings with any seriousness. They are flacks pure and simple.
