[...] Many have remarked on the rich fantasy lives of chickenhawks. See, for example, this Think Progress post and my comments on a Mark Steyn column. Digby wrote awhile back that many righties seem to be living a vicarious fantasy life of war-movie glory through the troops: We are dealing with a group of right wing glory seekers who chose long ago to eschew putting themselves on the line in favor of tough talk and empty posturing — the Vietnam chickenhawks and their recently hatched offspring of the new Global War On Terrorism. These are men (mostly) driven by the desire to prove their manhood but who refuse to actually test their physical courage. Neither are they able to prove their virility as they are held hostage by prudish theocrats and their own shortcomings. So they adopt the pose of warrior but never actually place themselves under fire. This is a psychologically difficult position to uphold. Bullshitting yourself is never without a cost. … [...]

[...] A few points. Who are the people today that deliver “phrases, washed in lye, about heroes and heroic death,” but fail to attend a single soldier’s funeral for fear that death — real death, not the kind they have on CSI — might cross an American’s TV screen? Who are the armchair strategists, those “fat, despicable bourgeois” who sit behind a computer screen and have the audacity to claim that they’re fighting too? Who are the soft gasbags launching smear campaigns against actual soldiers who dared to speak up against their arrogance and their foul haughtiness? [...]

So yes, Kathryn, you are fighting a war. And your e-mailer is ignorant about how wars are fought, about how wars are won and lost, and about the way the world actually works.

No, Cliff. Neither is Ms. Lopez fighting a war, nor does she need you projecting your own insecurities on her to make your defensive posturing look like a chivalrous defense. You're only fooling yourself. While her original remarks seemed appropriate to me, I'm nevertheless impressed with how gently she handled someone else who disagreed and how much humility she displayed when honoring those who are actually in harms way.

This "war" of ideas is not a war. It's metaphor -- a rhetorical device. Maybe if you always used quotes when using it in a figurative sense (raised double-two-finger air quotes when speaking), you might begin to understand what she does. It's not the prettiest prose, but it might help you grasp reality again.

Mr. Griffin isn't even REMOTELY a structural engineer so for him to even mention something that is way out of his relm of expertise, i.e. claims about why the towers couldn't have collapsed alone from the planes crashing into them, is asinine in and of itself. Not to mention the fact that he is not an expert on military protocol or FAA procedures in an emergency.

If goofballs like this boast of "fighting the ideas wars" or similar ridiculousness, ask if they dress in uniform to get ready for their "daily battles", and if they wear cool John Rambo headbands and camoflage into "battle". Do they wear gun holsters when they sit down at the computers? And do their mommies come in and bring them lemonade during breaks?

The way these characters keep dragging out Churchill is rather pathetic. Churchill was arguably the greatest man of the century but until 1939 his career was chequered to put it mildly. Had he died in 1938 he would have been perceived as a failure. What's dangerous about all this is the essential hyperpole contained in all these comparisons. Hussein or Bin Laden are Hitler. This is a war as important as the second world war etc. What it leads to is a completely wrong diagnosis of the problem and hence the treatment required. Hitler was the undisputed leader of the greatest military power of his time. It took the combined all out efforts of the three most powerful states in the world six years to subdue him. He had conquered all Europe and had he defeated Britain was in the position to threaten the very existence of the USA. In no sense do Bin Laden, Hussein, Ahman?? threaten the existence of the USA, they are as someone once said a nuisance. A serious nuisance but nonetheless a nuisance. It like the difference between kidney stones and lung cancer. Unfortunately Bush and these freedom fighters at NRO are treating a nuisance ailment as if it were life threatening when it isn't with the consequence of tons of collateral damage that have impeded the war on terrorism and done huge damage to our reputation and diplomatic leverage. Let's face it the freedom fighters have one agenda only and it's not the primacy of American interests or protection of American lives, it's the continuance in power of the Republican party. That's there agenda, so one wonders why we treat their rantings with any seriousness. They are flacks pure and simple.

If these cowardly chickenhawks think that they are truly fighting a war, have them use their pens at the recruiting office to sign enlistment papers and trade their pens in for a real man's weapon, the M-16.

Cliff May is a "Stepford kissass pundit" for th repuglicans. He will say are do anything for the purposes of furthering the failed policies of the right-wingers. He was quoted as saying that Josh Bolten needed "Media training" after Bolten's poor showing on Meet the Press. All May cares about is one's ability to lie for the cause.

Reply to Chase:

As to the point about UBL not being behind 9/11 - I’m not going to entertain that.

How do you expect to learn anything if you never question anything? (Unless, of course, learning is not your objective...)

I am confident his is. I never really had any doubt, but if I did, the 9/11 Commission Report would have taken care of that.

Have you actually read the 'report'? If you had, and had actually looked at it with a critical eye, you might have understood why David Ray Griffin characterized it as a '571-page lie'.

You don’t think he was? So be it. You think President Bush (or anyone else in government for that matter) was behind it? I pity you.

Save your pity for someone who needs it...at least I'm not trying to live my life with my eyes tightly chenched shut.

Is UBL alive? I tend to think he is. He may not be! I don’t know. Honestly, I really don’t care.

Well, there's something else you and our Fuhrer^H^H^H^H^H^Hpresident have in common...you both ostensibly believe that Osama bin Laden is responsible for the greatest terrorist attack ever on American soil, and you both don't seem to care about bringing this monster to justice.

Either you're a hypocrite or a liar...I know which Bush is...but which are you?

#146 - My apologies for the slow reply.

To start with: regarding Saddam having nothing to do with 9/11. Yeah. Upon review, I definitely injected Saddam into the convo, not you. My fault. Completely my fault. I misread it once and stuck with it. The dangers of multi-tasking...
