U.S. approves two more weeks of fighting.
“The United States has given Israeli forces between 10 and 14 days to finish dealing Hezbollah ‘a strategic blow,’ a senior Israeli Foreign Ministry official told FOX News, as both Israeli forces and Hezbollah guerrillas continued to volley rockets across the Lebanon-Israel border.”

As soon as states accept troop casualties as easily as they accept civilian casualties and send them into the battle where they fight it out and take losses then maybe I can understand. But this acceptance of civilians being blown away from bombs sickens the hell out of me. Send the troops in and take the losses if the cause is so great. If it is the people will accept the losses.

I hate civilian casualties to. Look at 9/11. I didn’t know the Pentagon had offices there. Lebanon had years of warnings, “get rid of Hezbollah in the south”, and they ignored it. In part due to Syria’s involvment. Sure, the average family in Southern Lebanon is scared to death of Hezbollah, Syria and Israel. And they are really being screwed by Hezbollah because the terrorists won’t allow for civilians to evacuate. It’s a mess, but Israel has to respond. Israel didn’t start the LATEST conflict. And Israel has a right to defend itself, despite possible civilian casualties. Does Hezbollah send out flyers to Israeli cities before they launch rockets????????

Israel *is* going after Hezbollah. The problem is the terrorists don’t have special uniforms and buildings clearly identifying themselves, they hide and blend in with the population. Fighting terrorists in a dense urban setting is unfortunately going to produce civilian casualties.
Yes, it was 2 kidnapped soldiers and 8 killed soldiers THIS time. But the whole point of the operation is to once and for all take care of the terrorist capability and put in a force that will serve as a buffer for the future.
I also take issue with the regular moral equivilency mistake you always see on this board. That terrorists and states fighting back are basically just the same thing. And that there is some moral imperitive to lose as many of your own as they lose of theirs.
I think I have disagreed with probably 99% of everything that has come out of the mouth of the Bush administration since 2000. But I think they are completely right in not settling for a short-term cease fire that does nothing to solve the real problem. What is the point?! Hezbollah uses the time to regroup, have Iran and Syria re-arm it, and then they just start launching attacks and killing Israelis again, just where we were 2 weeks ago and for the past years. If you don’t degrade the terrorists ability to strike, coupled with a real buffer force, you have done nothing.
Somebody answer me this basic question – what exactly is the point of Hezbollah? It used to be to reclaim the Lebanese land, but in 2000 Israel gave it back and the UN verified this. So their whole point now is to launch terrorist attacks against our ally! Why should any state accept this on their border?!

July 25th, 2006 at 6:44 pmTime capsule – when the Israeli’s withdrew from Lebanon 18 years ago, they kept about a 10 KM section at the southern end and called it their security zone.
That’s why the ME blogs you visit will say that the Israeli’s were occupiers. Now, we all wish that the government of Lebanon would’ve been able to negotiate a settlement with Israel years ago, but they were kind of caught up in their own internal fighting & being dominated by Syria for quite some time.
I doubt many here feel that what Hezbollah did, when they captured those two poor guys was OK. We’d have preferred that it was the Lebanese government that patrolled their southern border, not Hezbollah.
Having said that, we feel Israel is making matters much, much worse by having gone overboard. Yes, gone overboard. You don’t bomb a whole country because 2 guys were kidnapped. If that was the case, the US would’ve laid waste to Mexico a long, long time ago.

Proportionality demands exactly that, and it leads to nothing but longer and more destructive wars. Part of the reasons nations build strong militaries is to deter people from committing aggressive acts against them.
The United States did not build the military it has just to provide “proportionate” reponse. Israel need to kick ass for the next few days.

7. To immediately arrest two named persons implicated by the preliminary investigation undertaken by Israel;

9. To furnish Israel with explanations regarding statements from high Lebanese officials both in Lebanon and abroad, who have expressed hostility towards Israel; and

The life of someone as important as Corporal Gilad Shalit, along with the other two low-ranking soldiers, cannot go unaccounted for, much like the great Archduke. If any line-item in the Ultimatum is rejected, then ruthless and unquestioned action must be taken.
