Bolton’s Bubble: U.N. Ambassador Skips All Security Council Foreign Travel

John Bolton In testimony to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Oct. 18, 2005, U.N. Ambassador John Bolton argued that diplomacy has to happen outside of the New York “bubble”:

Well, I think that’s why it’s so important to work not only in New York…but to work in capitals as well. It is the phenomenon that sitting up there at Turtle Bay, that you operate in a little bit of a bubble.

So that’s why this effort, I think, really does require a lot of attention not just in New York. If we left it only in New York I think we’d have the bubble problem and trying to break through that bubble should be one of our main diplomatic efforts.

According to the U.N. Security Council (UNSC), there have been four UNSC trips since Bolton was recess appointed as ambassador in Aug. 2005 — to Central Africa, Ethiopia and Eritrea, Chad and Sudan, and to the Congo. He did not attend any of them.

In early June, Bolton passed up the delegation trip to Sudan because he had a “full platter here.” In reality, Bolton was giving a lecture at the Centre for Policy Studies, a right-wing think tank in London.

ThinkProgress repeatedly attempted to confirm Bolton’s foreign travel with his spokesman, Rick Grenell. Grenell insisted we were “wrong” — that in fact Bolton had attended UNSC trips — but refused to say where Bolton went with the UNSC. Grenell also told us if we publicized the fact that Bolton had not attended UNSC trips “we’ll just blast you out of the water.” ThinkProgress also sent an e-mail to Bolton’s press office with our request, but have not yet received a response.

Bolton’s confirmation hearing is tomorrow. Maybe a Senator could ask him about his foreign travel and Bolton could blast us out of the water himself.

god knows what is hidden in that mustache. On a more serious note, this is not really a suprise, The neo-cons blasted Gore as not being up to the challenge of international dealings, while ignoring that W had never left the country. Reality is not a big issue.

Central Africa, a republican can't go to Central Africa - there's no Starbucks, no Perrier, no Ferragamo boutiques. Central Africa is full of poor black people, hell that's the reason we didn't even go to New Orleans, much less Central Africa.

Maybe Grenell knows something we don't. i mean last i checked Washington DC was not in the water, but it is possible i guess that a large surge in the bay might rush up the Potomac and then put DC in the water, from whence one could get blasted out??? But to use a terrible, WW2, John Wayne, movie line like that just reeks of the stench of stupidity.

  23. DrSinker Says:

Lou Dobbs is running a poll question as to whether or not the UN has the right to tax us. Gee, I wonder how that will work out.

OT a little, but I guess Inhofe and some other goofball have introduced legislation stating that the UN has no right to tax American citizens. They don't seem to appreciate that by wasting time on such trivial issues, they're actually wasting our tax dollars.

  24. Krazny Says:

I may be wrong, but the UN doesn't tax american citizens. I guess indirectly, since the UN is funded by the US government, and all of the other involved governments, we are taxed to support them. An important distinction should be made, that the we are taxed by the US government, and that money goes where the US budget dictates.

  25. DrSinker Says:

    Krazny,

I think the UN is proposing to tax citizens of all countries, or something. You know that will go over well here in the States.

I believe in terms of %GDP, we contribute very little to the UN.

  26. Mr. Truthiness Says:

Ugh. Imagine that guy trying to give you the ole reach around. Yuck.

This is par the course for Republican/conservatives/neo-con/incestous cockroaches with degrees.

Put a person with utter contempt for an organization in position to sabotage it. EEOC. Justice Department Civil Rights division. EPA. UN.

Bolton's mustache probably smells like Dubya's....ugh. I can't even finish that sentence.

  27. Krazny Says:

    Dr. Sinker,

I am not a big fan of taxes, not a righttard, but not a fan. I think the current system of countries paying dues, is fine. I don't think the UN should be leveeing taxes on anyone. It would be a foolish mistake, not only in the US, but worldwide.

    Thanks for the update.

  28. Badmoodman Says:

“we’ll just blast you out of the water.” - -These guys can't get away from Swiftboat analogies. I'd love to play poker with Mr. Subtle Bluff, Grenell. Sheesh.

  29. Frogcatcher Says:

Here is a bit of news I just herd about. The anti-American corrupt UN want to put a tax on all Americans for the UN’s services! Not only do we pay 22% of all the dues in this worthless body, they now want to stick it to us even more. Get this organization out of the US and withdraw our membership!

  30. Krazny Says:

Actually I don't think the US has paid UN dues in years. They are supposed to, but don't. As for anti-american, they represent the world body, or at least are supposed to. If being anti-american, means they don't acquiesce to all demands by the US, then you need to rethink.

  31. DrSinker Says:

The bottom line is that the UN is a weak body because the US really doesn't want it any other way.

  32. Miro Says:

Somebody on another comments section the other day wrote: "If you don't want to face reality, would you at least share your drugs."

    Now Bolton's office says...
“we’ll blast you out of the water”–
Hey! maybe they've decided to share their drugs! :-D

    Ooops! >:-(

  33. Krazny Says:

bush marginalized the UN in the run up to the Iraq war, because the world body would not agree to an invasion of Iraq. I do think the UN has problems, and they have caused some of those problems. I cannot ignore the oil for food scandal, or the complete absence when it come to the genocide in darfur. However Bush has gone out of his way to alienate the rest of the world, and is now suprised they won't help him.

    He just isn't that bright.

  34. COMMENT BY JIM Says:

The U.N. has been full of scandal for years. Oil for food? What about molesting young girls in Congo. You haven't heard of that? What about putting Cuba on the U.N.'s human rights commision?

The left treats John Bolton worse than the U.N. Why, because he yelled at someone...

The United States pays more dues than any other nation, plus we house the U.N.

I'm a Bengals fan. And were going to have a pretty good year baby!

I'm not talking about TP stories. They are what they are. Short in length and details...... They don't offer followups.......... Their stories are full of "soundbites" not facts....

I'm talking about the INSANE DRIBBLE BULLSHIT the readers put on here sometimes. I really enjoy debate, but SOME of you guys are totally insane........

  41. JYD Says:

John Bolton looks like Mark Twain.

    I'd rather have Mark Twain.

  42. DrSinker Says:

    Jim,

Well, I'll give you this: I'd rather have Carson Palmer at the UN than John Bolton. Of course, then the Bengals would be out of a QB (again!)

  43. Chase Says:

    Jim, I totally agree.

As a conservative, I enjoy coming to TP to debate some of the topics. Occasionally a position is presented to me that brings me pause, makes me stop and reconsider my own, sometimes changing, sometimes bolstering, but still, makes me think. It's much more personally satisfying than sitting on a convective site in an echo-chamber environment.

But most of the time, I get the kind of conspiracy theories you mention above. When I get that, I think "great, what do I do now?" I'm not here to say stuff like "BUSH RULES! LIBS ARE FAGS" but it seems like so many of the responses I get are the conspiratorial, progressive counterpoint to that.

Oh yeah, re: Amb Bolton. I like his suspicion of the UN. I like how he is able to call BS on it with a diplomatic smirk. Plus those bushy eyebrows have to help keep his eyes obscured in tough negotiating sessions.

  44. Caroline Says:

The world has facilitated Israel's continuing crime. As always the muted Arab and Muslim response are inconsequential. UN's early murmurings against disproportionate response, were initially ignored. Led by the United States the international community has given Israel a carte blanche to do whatever Israel considers necessary to promote its security. This was conveyed by the mild worded G-8 summit statement. Ironically it is a security-starved nuclear-state. It is not held to any accountability; it is not expected to abide by any international norms laid down for inter-State relations. Washington has emerged as the core accomplice in Israel's devastating and illegal war on Lebanon. It gave Tel Aviv the green light to continue the bombings. Bush has defended Israel's battering of Lebanon. It is Israel's right to act in "self-defense", he says. Washington okays Israel's bid of seeking security by inflicting mayhem on another people. Surely this is disservice to a close friend. Yet it continues. The attempt to discuss the Lebanon situation in the UNSC was vetoed by the US. The US Congress, the House and the Senate both, passed resolutions supporting Israeli action. The US is reportedly rushing precision-guided bombs to Israel. By preventing any concrete action taken at the UN to censure Israel's war on Lebanon, Washington has ensured that Israel can continue the illegal one-sided war unfettered. America's promise of a brave new Middle East is increasingly being reduced to a ghastly joke. The list of blunders is endless. The Iraq invasion, based on untruth has turned Iraq into a death zone. No less than dozens of Iraqis are now dying daily. Yes daily. US has lost 2000 of its own men too. In Afghanistan, the New York Times has finally conceded, all is not well. Its more than Pakistan mischief, there are problems within Afghanistan. Meanwhile all these American operations are costing the US army more than just the lives of America's best men. Its honor is taking a battering. The gruesome stories of some US soldiers torturing prisoners, many of them innocent, in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanomobay just don't end.

  45. COMMENT BY JIM Says:

    Dr. Sinker and Chase

I'm a lifelong Bengals fan. The 80's were grand, two Super Bowl appearances, but two close loses. The 90's were a disaster. Marvin Lewis should have been a NFL head coach ten years ago. Cincy got lucky. He changed things, and I have Carson updates as fresh as a loaf of Italian bread. Let's change TP for one night to TPNFL central.

Chase, I've read you on hear before and you seem pretty squared away. I love TP to. We are ALL AMERICANS. WE ARE ALL ON THE SAME SIDE. You see that, and I believe the majority of people on TP agree. We may not agree on the methods our government takes, but we agree on peace and security for our families and friends.

  50. DrSinker Says:

    Jim, Chase,

You both raise good points. I think people should be able to come on here and raise contrary points of view without being slammed for it. I consider myself a fiscally conservative, socially liberal person. When I've expressed the point of view that raising the minimum wage may not be a sound idea, I pretty much got skewered. When I suggested religion and science aren't necessarily contrary to one another, someone else jumped on me.

When this happens, I think you just have to respond as politely and calmly as you can. Focus on the main points of what someone is trying to say, and don't let the personal stuff get to you. If that doesn't work, you just have to ignore the person and focus on the people that are interested in debate.

Bolton, says this, but I don't feel he is sincere. as many politicians bow to the money.

Man alive, I was stationed in Germany my last two years of service. My best drinking buddies were a Buddist, whom defended the Soviet Union, and an Iranian that owned a pizza pub. Where's the bay? Not the California one, but the New York UN one...

The neighborhood of Turtle Bay extends from 43rd to 53rd Street, and eastward from Lexington Avenue to the East River. The United Nations now stands where the bay once was, and the 40-acre tract once known as Turtle Bay Farm has evolved into an urban landscape. Still, many landmarks of the past remain as evidence of the areas colorful history.

Any Democrat Senator who votes for John Bolton to remain as our US Ambassador to the United Nations will be punished, in November, by progressive voters!

Bolton is a proven certified fascist, so everyone who defends him must be a fascist as well, which means any Democrat like Joseph Lieberman the turncoat!

The UN is being undermined by Bolton's fascist rants, as he spews Bush Regime propaganda, and profusely lies to the entire world's diplomats on every last issue!

  72. Paul in LA Says:

"“Here is a bit of news I just herd about. The anti-American corrupt UN want to put a tax on all Americans for the UN’s services!”"

The fear of 'international taxation' has been a mainstay of rightwing exceptionalism since the Rapepublican Senate helped kill Mr. Wilson's League of Nations, and Mr. Wilson.

They don't want ANY kind of law binding their stealing and murder.

That's 85 years that the righwing has been beating that tired horse.

Bolotoine is a radical, not a representative of America. And he is actually acutely hostile to American interests, which is why he has been injected into the UN against the will of the people, like the rest of the GFH Bush government.

  73. walter66 Says:

I was watching the Washington Journal this morning and they were talking about Bolton. I found it interesting(laughable) that the callers that support Bolton cite his efforts thus far. Gimme a break, a republican wanting to see the U.N. succede in it's mission. Anyone wanna buy a bridge in NYC?

  74. Evil Spaniard Says:

Here is a bit of news I just herd about. The anti-American corrupt UN want to put a tax on all Americans for the UN’s services!”

You mean, as corrupt as Haliburton, overcharging payments done with taxpayer money, or serving putrid water to USA troops? Or as corrupt as Enron, who caused the debacle of the energetic market, its stock, its stockholders, its employes, etc... Or corrupt as the money machine that was the Tom Delay organization to funnel money to the Republican Party financing and construction of a nepotist republican bureaucracy around the President? Or as corrupt as the Dukester?

The Republican smearing with corruption charges of the UN is very hypocryte, when in their own houses they commit far worser crimes.

And, btw, many companies beneffitting from the Oil For Food scandal were from the USA...

The "Corruption of the UN" is only another slogan to bring it down. If there exists corruption, stablish additional checks and balances, and don't simply destroy it.

Destroying the UN is only a strategy to grant absolute power to the warmongers. But, even for them, is a dangerous strategy because, what grants that the USA will win forever in a world without the UN? Germany, the biggest military potency then, tried to do it 60 years ago, and failed miserably, and ended divided, empoverished and subdued to the will of the winners.

  81. One Jew Says:

    I’ve read many comments.

    My general impression is two-fold:

    1. Most comments made sound like they are made by people who never seen professional politician at work.

Ambassador Bolton will create for you an impression of unique and highly professional politician from his first public appearance you will listen to.

Among Congresswomen / Congressmen / Senators he is the one that always makes sense.

    2. Most comments made sound like they are made by people for whom Willy the Clinton was an example of a style for politician:

A little bit of “inhale” ta-ta-ta
A little bit of sax ta-ta-ta
A little bit of Mogadishu ta-ta-ta
A little bit of cigar ta-ta-ta
A little bit of North Korea ta-ta-ta
A little bit of Oval Office ta-ta-ta
A little bit of Monica ta-ta-ta
A little bit of Madeleine to butcher Serbia ta-ta-ta
A little bit of Hillary for Senate ta-ta-ta

  82. One Jew Says:

    later.

  83. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

Regarding the UN taxation issue, James Inhofe has introduced a bill in the Senate regarding this issue. (S-3633).

    http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:s.03633:

One of their primary arguments is corruption within the U.N. But then check out this article from today's Washington Post about the most recent report on waste and fraud within the Homeland Security Department.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/07/26/AR2006072601683.html

From an article written in 2002: "Since 1973, Israel has cost the United States about $1.6 trillion. If divided by today's population, that is more than $5,700 per person."

    http://www.csmonitor.com/2002/1209/p16s01-wmgn.html

Looks to me like the U.S. would like to be in CHARGE of the fraud and corruption, and would opt for guns over butter any day.

  84. Jay Randal Says:

One Jew > I think you are just one dumb redneck and NOT Jewish > lol.

  85. One Jew Says:

    Jay Randal

"I think you are just one dumb redneck and NOT Jewish"

    LOLOLOL...

Why don't you come over and check?

... and, g, let me think, sorry, I'm slow today

    U

    R

    Not "one"

    Not "dumb"

    and

    Not a

BTW, could you please explain to me the meaning of the word "redneck" ? I'm sorry again, I'm new to this, pease forgive me my ignorance about the origins and the meaning of the word I'm inquiring about.

  86. JLM Says:

What I want to know is -- why is Hillary saying she will vote for his re-appointment? Any self-respecting liberal who plans on voting for her should rethink that. she has turned into just another vote whore.

  87. Paul in LA Says:

Oh, great, a new trolll. And a Zionist, masquerading as a (well, one) Jew.

A question about racism from a Zionist is HILARIOUS.

Thanks for stopping by. And remember, Bolotoine may be a Zionist, but he may not be. It's a funny thing how the Bushies always end up screwing their friends, as well as their enemies.

  88. Paul in LA Says:

JLM, what's the big shock? Hillary, and bill, and joe, and chuck, and quite a few more, WORK FOR AIPAC. They are following the Israel Amendment of the Constitution, which requires the US to ignore all warcrimes and support all greedy landgrabs by Zion.

And, because of that, it isn't far wrong to say that hill, and bill, and joe, and chuck, are NOT liberals, but actually are allies of GFH Bush as long as he is attacking Arabs. No need to uphold real American laws against the Felon-in-Chief. They work for AIPAC; so they believe in an Amendment that doesn't exist.

Under OUR laws, the US should be doing WHAT REAGAN DID in 81, namely to cut weapons sales to Israel until they go back behind their borders and stop acting like Arabs are Jews in Germany under THAT rightwing government.

  89. One Jew Says:

    Paul in LA

O-o-h, someone HILLARY-OUS from LA? No questions, No comments. Speaks for itself.
