Q: Is the country closer to a civil war?

Rumsfeld: “Oh, I don’t know. You know, I thought about that last night, and just musing over the words, the phrase, and what constitutes it. … It clearly is being stimulated by people who would like to have what could be characterized as a civil war and win it, but I’m not going to be the one to decide if, when or at all.”

Thanks Rummy for the non-answer. But it’s good to know he thinks about these things before bed….

  2. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

Does Rummy think about these things before bed with or without the help of drugs and alcohol?

  3. DieNowForPeace says:

Yes, let’s leave that decision to our nation’s appointed, number-one “decider”.

    I loved these:
“I decide. I’m the decider” – Nice use of word in a sentence, little George. (He defines things like a 2nd grader!)

“A sovereign nation is one that practices sovereignty”.
    (Drooooool…)

  4. Theresa says:

No. We’ll leave that decision to The Decider.

  5. dlet says:

Huh? How do these guys communicate with eachother in the White House. Imagine an intelligent bush cabinet advisor(I know, but I did say to imagine) sitting in the Oval Office and having to listen to Cheney, Rumsfield and Bushboy. No wonders they have to get idiots surrounding them. Any sane person would shoot themselves after listening to their prattle.

  6. Solitaire says:

The fukwit can’t put his finger on what a civil war is? The SECRETARY OF DEFENSE is having trouble understanding what “could be characterized a civil war”. Oh, and he knows “some people would like” to have one, as if they are not already. How clever of him. How utterly reassuring it is to know that this old fool has decided not to decide anything regarding the status of the war in Iraq. Wonderful.

  7. thelonegunman says:

    this means:

    I don’t know.
    I don’t care.
    When is Iran queued up?

  8. Mike says:

Like Dumbsfeld hasn’t promoted this civil war. Right. Divide and conquer is the mantra of all callous cowards.

  9. s says:

Everyone commenting here should be enraged by this sleazy and criminal man. It is utterly amazing that any of this bile is flying at all……..My God what have we become. I don’t think most people realize what is happening to our country and the world right now. We have been taken over by real criminals…….it’s not longer laugh and deride Rummy, Bush, Rove etc. It’s serious and America is losing. We the people are losing

  10. . says:

Maybe Rummy is waiting for the answer from his crystal skull.

  11. bones says:

Was he talking about the United States?

  12. For Truth says:

    Rumsfeld: “Oh, I don’t know.”

I appreciate the honesty. Who really knows if there is a civil war or not. One way to find out is to bring our people home and see if there is still any fighting.

  13. PLC (PatrioticLiberalChristian) says:

    Q: Is Rumsfeld sleazy?
Me: I don’t know if I know or don’t know. I have, in fact, been musing about the words and meanings of what he knows and does not know and whether there are facts or no facts to constitute or characterize what he says or means as a means of deciding perhaps in the future, if at all, about the factual nature of the conclusion as well as the circumstances which give rise to the unknown that prompts the question in question.

    The Unknown
    by Donald Rumsfeld
    As we know,
    There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
    We also know
    There are known unknowns.
    That is to say
We know there are some things
    We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
    The ones we don’t know
    We don’t know.
—Feb. 12, 2002, Department of Defense news briefing
    I think that answers our question, folks;
clear as mud? So is his policy.

  15. proudleftists says:

When will the American People revolt agaist this dishonest, incompetent, fascist Administration ? Rummy is a murderous thug!

  16. El Tiburon says:

The only way Rummy would consider it a civil war is if Rhett Butler got blowed up by an IED and Scarlett O’Hara had a leg blown off

  17. Jason says:

    So warm. So human.

  18. bones says:

“We know where the (civil war) is, it’s around Baghda and Tikrit and points north, south, east, and west”

  19. Art says:

    Hmmmm!!
    CIVIL WAR…
    Hmmmm.
    Hey… That’s an oxymoron, isn’t it.
    Hmmmm!

  20. Cyra Brown says:

I would LOVE to hear Rumsfeld describe what he feels his duties as Sec. Def. consist of. He ‘just muses over the words’? You have got to be F*CKING KIDDING ME!?! ‘But he won’t be the one who decides…’, yeah, why start now? You can just ‘coast’ for a couple more years, right? But then again, spreading Democracy in the Middle East was never really the goal, was it?

  21. ann says:

Could Rummy be much more detached? Seems he’s bored with this whole “Secretary of Defense” thingy.

  22. Pampero Firpo says:

  23. DrSinker says:

At least he didn’t do his “Willy-Nilly, the sky is falling!!!” schtick again.

I’d really like to drop-kick this bozo right into the heart of the fighting in Baghdad. Think that would wake the jerk up???

  24. justanobserver says:

Webster’s defines Civil War as : a war between opposing groups of citizens of the same country. That’s a Known Known.

this man presides over a government dept that that spends $454,000,000,000 on the defense of the nation. Your tax money is in good hands folks, the hands of a babbling and dangerous fool.

  28. Badmoodman says:

We can hate war and love the warrior, which is what we must do always, if we are to remain human. Rumsfeld’s a disgrace to his country and the planet.

  29. fuzzy says:

I’ve never seen someone use the answer “I don’t know” as often as this pathetic old man. Why does anyone even bother to ask him questions anymore?

  30. jason baddo says:

anyone here old enough to remember Masters of the Universe from the 80’s? Well, Rumsfeld looks just like the villan, Skeletor.

My thoughts exactly. Most people wont realize the damage that thees imbiciles have done to America until it is time to pay the piper, by then, they are long gone. Every action in life comes with consequences – good or bad. Its the immutable law of the universe. But, sadly most of our countrymen are more concerned about which movie star is screwing whom, and who will be the next idol. This is insanity at its best.

  32. maggiegault says:

Thanks, Rummy, for the swipe at those of us “who wish to characterize” a civil war as actually being a civil war. After all, we’re just a bunch useless liberals, peaceniks who wouldn’t know “democracy on the march” if it bit us in our collective asses.

The thing is, many of us who are saying Iraq is a civil war situation are family members of military. Or soldiers themselves. Veterans.

  33. Ho Chi Minh says:

Solitaire, this is the same numbnuts who denied that Iraq freedom fighters were waging a guerilla war some 2 years ago.

    Excellent. :)

  37. Zooey says:

Is it too much to ask that someone in this administration give the IRAQ WAR some actual thought? Or the media?

  38. Mom says:

What a line of crap. Iraq has now spiralled into a cival war. WHERE THE HELL IS THE MEDIA ON THIS???? Whose got the balls to report the truth anymore?

  39. Drew Mackenzie says:

“And I turned to my teddy bear – I call him Fudge – and I said ‘Fudge, is this a civil war? ‘ and he said – you know what he said? He said ‘Rumbo, you don’t know. But at least now it’s not one of those things you don’t know you don’t know.’ And I said ‘Thank you Fudge, and America thanks you.’”

  40. Jay Randal says:

NOT closer > It’s already a civil war in Iraq, but old Rummy will never notice > lol.

  41. Cyra Brown says:

The ‘Insurgency’ was a reality in Iraq, long before Rummy was willing to admit it. I predict a ’sequel’ here. Is the Sec. Def. going senile on us? Probably.

  42. WC says:

    Don Rumsfeld: July 26, 2006:

“Oh, I don’t know. You know, I thought about that last night, and just musing over the words, the phrase, and what constitutes it. … It clearly is being stimulated by people who would like to have what could be characterized as a civil war and win it, but I’m not going to be the one to decide if, when or at all.”

Interview with Don Rumsfeld, July 30, 2007:

Wolf Blitzer, CNN: “Sec. Rumsfeld, a year ago on the question of the existence of an Iraqi civil war, you said that it was clearly being stimulated by people who would like to have what could be characterized as a civil war. A year later, we still have the same number of troops in Iraq, and the violence and attacks from Iraqis fighting each other are pretty much at the same level. Do you still feel that way today?”

Don Rumsfeld: “Look, I didn’t say that. What I said was that I suspected it was being stimulated by people.”
