“Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Thursday directed more than 2,500 U.S. troops who have spent the past year in Iraq to stay up to four months past their scheduled departure date, boosting the size of the U.S. force amid unrelenting violence in Baghdad, officials said.”
No need for a draft here, we just use the shit out of what we got, they like it anyway.
July 27th, 2006 at 4:36 pmIs it really true that a lot of these guys will lose their girlfriends over this?
July 27th, 2006 at 4:36 pmcut and run?………..by the number of Iraqi causalties it appears we have already cut and run. Hold them there for another 4 months…..why bother
July 27th, 2006 at 4:40 pmRummy’s favorite movie as a child must have been the John Ford/John Wayne WWII film, “They Were Expendable.”
July 27th, 2006 at 4:43 pmMy sympathies to those who are being robbed of their family life to continue to fight endlessly for Bush’s lies.
July 27th, 2006 at 4:44 pmdid someone say ‘draft’ :)
July 27th, 2006 at 4:44 pmyes, if only there were some sort of active honest true political movement that we could form to try and stop the indisciminate killing…
July 27th, 2006 at 4:46 pmIt seems to me that the American military is making no effort to stem the tide of violence in Iraq as witnessed by the numbers of Iraqi civilians killed. My question is what’s the difference between being “hunkered” down in a bunker and refusing to help stem the violence and not being there at all?
July 27th, 2006 at 5:03 pmMy heart goes out to these young men and women that are in Iraq fighting for this illegal war. I hope in November when the Dems take back both houses that we can bring our troops home.
The Iraqis want us to set a timetable to bring our brave men and women home.
July 27th, 2006 at 5:05 pm#2 – For Truth,
As a matter of fact yes. The divorce rate among Army officers has tripled in the last 2 years and the rise is believed to be directly resultant from longer and more frequent deployments. As a veteran I can tell you that being deployed for long periods or frequently (or both) can spell disaster for any relationship (lord knows I blew through a few of them for that reason).
The BBC has an excellent article citing the stat I listed above here
July 27th, 2006 at 5:06 pmMust be Thursday’s New Plan for victory in Iraq. Stand by for Friday’s Plan. . . .
July 27th, 2006 at 5:14 pmI find it ironic that the Generals and high ranking officers who run this war, like General Franks and General Myers, are allowed to retire and hit the talk show circuit while the wornout enlisted troops are not only called back to active duty if their MOS is needed, but those still in the service are doing a second or third tour in the war zone are now being extended.
July 27th, 2006 at 5:19 pmHuman life means nothing to this Administration. Keep the troops until they die or become useless. Just don’t send friends of the Bush Administration. Most Americans yell support our troops but would never go themselves nor send their children. This is the true American way. Work others till they die oh yes tell them that their fighting for their country yet protect friends of this Administration by not sending their kids. Talk is cheap in this country few will step up to the plate. The world feels sorry for Americans because we’re showing how stupid we are.
July 27th, 2006 at 5:28 pmEach “adjustment” by bushco to win the war against terrorists in Iraq shows the world how poorly this was thought out and planned. The reality is that there will be no victory over terrorism in Iraq but thousands of Americans have died and more will join them before Americans decide that bushco is a fraud and do not deserve to be in positons of leadership.
July 27th, 2006 at 5:50 pmHey, whatever happened to those ridiculous stories we had floated (by all the talking-point echoists) regarding Gen. Casey’s supposed troop withdrawal from Iraq in September, floated just a month ago…
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
I mean, that ridiculous nonsense got spread throughout the echoing “media” right after the U.S. Senate mustered thirty-nine votes (one of them a Republican!) in support of a resolution calling for the strategic redeployment of U.S. Troops from Iraq…
RE-PRINT THOSE FOOLISH STORIES NOW PLEASE.
You all love to believe lies, and love to repeat them; repeat them now.
Did (or did not) web-sites such as this (and the rest of the idiot echoing “media”) foolishly report that Gen. Casey was planning September Troop redeployments from Iraq?
Come on; it’s one thing to echo a stupid lie once, and another to echo it twice, and thrice…
WHERE ARE THOSE TROOP REDEPLOYMENT STORIES (ala Gen. Casey, and so widespread following the Senate’s consideration of the Levin Amendment) NOW?
(The echoing, undiscerning idiot “media”: it shall be the death and destruction of us all)
July 27th, 2006 at 6:02 pmvietnam all over again…..its just incredible how this nation repeats past mistakes over and over again…….
July 27th, 2006 at 6:29 pm13 &16; You are right on target–Bullseye.#2; Yup, they WILL lose their girlfriends. It happened to me when I was in the service, thousands of miles away. How’s this for a sense of style? Sent me a ‘Dear John’ letter enclosed in the birthday card she sent.
July 27th, 2006 at 6:37 pmBush and Cheney and Rumsfeld have said in the past that this country, because it is at war, should be prepared to sacrifice. Bush and Cheney’s daughters and Rove’s son and Rumsfeld’s son should lead the way by joining the Army and fighting along side the troops in Iraq. When will our intrepid press corps ask these people if they have urged their children to sacrifice for the good of their country? The press should be holding this administrations’ feet to the fire. Instead, people like Chris Matthews avoid the issue by having someone like Ann Coulter appear on their show. So much for asking those hardball questions.
July 27th, 2006 at 6:55 pmAnd this is a strategy?
July 27th, 2006 at 8:11 pmAs a retired soldier, and one who has returned from a year in Iraq with Strykers, My hat is off in support of these brave “Arctic Wolves” that are once again thrust longer in harms way. But if soldiers have to go, I’m glad (and so are most of the soldiers) they are riding in Strykers.

Ouch…damn. I tried to fix you up with Medea Benjamin, but I think it probably got lost among the trolls.
July 27th, 2006 at 9:56 pmWe’ll all go, right after YOU rummy, the bush twins and all congress’s kids go…and oh rummy, how many soldiers have deserted and moved to Canada or elsewhere..and how many Iraq woman, childern and elderly have died since the war started…HOW MANY!!!!!!…..???????
July 27th, 2006 at 10:03 pmBut if soldiers have to go, I’m glad (and so are most of the soldiers) they are riding in Strykers.

I’m happy you’re home safely. Hopefully, soon the rest of the troops will follow.
July 27th, 2006 at 10:07 pmWisedup
Well said. It is estimated that the number of military personnel who have deserted from the ranks and who have stated, from their actions, that they will not fight in an illegal and immoral war for imperialist America, numbers approximately 8,000. But this is probably a conservative estimate, since the military refuses to release any official numbers on those who have not returned to duty. This might be due to the fact that they realize that this could be somewhat bad for morale. The last thing the military wants is for anyone in the military to question and to think for themselves.
July 27th, 2006 at 10:29 pmguess who said this “A long-term foreign presence in a country can be unnatural. It is much like a broken bone. If it is not set properly at the outset, eventually, the muscles and tendons will grow around the break, and the body will adjust to the abnormal condition. This is what has happened in a number of places with a large foreign presence. Economies remain unreformed, distorted and dependent. Educated young people make more money as drivers for foreign workers, than as doctors or civil servants.”
July 27th, 2006 at 10:45 pmRemarks as Prepared for Delivery by Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld, at the 11th Annual Salute to Freedom, Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, New York City, Friday, February 14, 2003.
I heard there was a ship already headed to alaska with some troops and they had to turn back to Iraq.
July 27th, 2006 at 11:21 pmWell,
From my table at the Waffle House, lapping up syrup on my overcooked bacon, this sounds like a charming idea boys! Cheeri-O…
Sinners:Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield and co. If they’re as religious as they tout, they’ll rot in HELL.
July 28th, 2006 at 12:53 amWhen they stand down, we’ll stand up… again
July 28th, 2006 at 2:05 amWhen they stand down, we’ll stand up… again
July 28th, 2006 at 2:05 amWe train our young men and woman for serving in a war in a matter of weeks. So, in three years of “training” Iraqis to “stand up” for their own country as soldiers we should have every Iraqis battle ready and we can withdraw our troops.
July 28th, 2006 at 8:44 amPlans are on the table in the Pentagon to send another 50k troops to Iraq after the mid-term elections in a desperate effort to save the Bush legacy.
July 28th, 2006 at 10:16 amHe’s also re-instituting the practice of prima nocta for military brides. On her wedding night, all connubial bliss is at the whim of executive appointed chickenhawk desk jockeys in the area.
July 28th, 2006 at 12:37 pmBeats the hell out of admitting you were wrong.
