Sen. John McCain’s name “is conspicuously absent” from a new bill addressing public financing of presidential campaigns; McCain was the lead sponsor of a virtually identical bill last year. McCain’s spokesperson “did not return calls seeking comment…but several people involved in discussions about the legislation said the senator’s absence was related to his widely expected bid for the presidency in 2008.”
I believe real reform never did include McCain, so this is appropriate.
July 28th, 2006 at 4:23 pmAfter his dance with ‘W’, he was never the same man. They must have
something on him to get him into lockstep. I mean, why wouldn’t he be
supporting this? He was trying to be the ‘New Right’, with logic, honesty
and regard for all people.
John, boy, we hardly knew ‘ye.
Feingold has integrity. McCain, not so much.
July 28th, 2006 at 4:28 pmyou know what
hell never be president…
hes a disingenuous smarmy opportunistic egomaniac
July 28th, 2006 at 4:34 pmTRE, you just described the man currently occupying the White House. Never say never…it ain’t over until Diebold sings.
July 28th, 2006 at 4:36 pmIf the dems, and thats a big if, take the White House in ‘08, can we use the Diebold excuse too?
July 28th, 2006 at 4:38 pmI used to like this guy, if I was old enough to vote back in 2000 I would have voted in the Republican Primary to vote for McCain… but man, what a shameful sell-out he has become in the last couple of years. I despise him now, politically speaking… and wouldn’t even think of voting for him.
July 28th, 2006 at 4:38 pmNever say never…it ain’t over until Diebold sings.

NEVER would win ANOTHER ELECTION IN THE USA
unless nukes go off in nyc, or something worse happens
there will be a dem president in 08
July 28th, 2006 at 4:38 pmMan, McCain was one of the few outliers in a party full of crooked douchebags, and now he has decided to join them.
July 28th, 2006 at 4:40 pm#5, Grandpa Seth, looks like you got your memo from Karl Rove a little earlier than most repukes…
Mark Crispin Miller: ‘How to pre-empt a ‘November Surprise”

If the GOP should lose the House and/or the Senate on Election Day, they will pick out a handful of the “closest” races–as many as they need to hang on to majority control–and start to scream like hell about ELECTION FRAUD.
That’s right: the major perpetrators of such fraud will cast themselves as victims of the very crime that put them where they are, and charge the Democrats with having used the very tactics that the Bush Republicans have now perfected: legal/bureaucratic disenfranchisement, e-voting manipulation, hostile challenges to would-be voters, covert efforts at disinformation, countless ballots thrown away, and so on.
July 28th, 2006 at 4:47 pmMcCain and Feingold set out to take big contributors out of politics. Obviously, they were very successful. Hear that George S.? Great job boys!
July 28th, 2006 at 5:01 pmI always thought that McCain was honest and trustworthy and that he would stick to his common sense, hard working, decent sensibilities that made him so attractive in the first place. The last few months sure have blown that out of the water. Someone needs to tell him to stop sucking up to the Republican base. Go back to the old independent McCain, who found fault with both Democrats and Republicans. America is ready to elect a president who tells them straight up honestly how screwed up polarized politics is in this country.
July 28th, 2006 at 5:03 pmYou may not agree with McCain on many issues, but he’s honestly a decent man, who I believe will actually stick up for the American people and no one else. Plus, he’s been through hell in war and imprisonment, and will think twice before sending troops all over the world for any reason.
…. not to be predictive, but
July 28th, 2006 at 5:06 pmVery happy he’s disappointing everyone 2 years before the ‘08 election. Otherwise, many people would have been bamboozled by this traitor to the United States.
July 28th, 2006 at 5:27 pmSo, when others are running for prez, McCain pushes for campaign reform. When he is eyeing the office, he runs the other way.
July 28th, 2006 at 5:41 pmHe’s no different from any other repug on the hill. A self-serving opportunist.
McCain is flip-flopping and Democrats have to forcefully put out the “flip-flop” message – early and often. Democrats have to keep the focus on morals/values like integrity, consistency, and honesty. Democrats cannot even begin to think of running a candidate who even remotely has appeared or actually gone against these values. Democrats have to start NOW in framing the debate along values lines.
July 28th, 2006 at 5:53 pmMcCain is a sleazy politician > PERIOD. No more needs to be said about him!
July 28th, 2006 at 10:19 pmmccain/leiberman in 2008…
they are both fake, phoney, frauds…a team made in heaven!
hi, jay, how’s life?
July 29th, 2006 at 12:29 amPost 18 band > yep only complete wack-jobs would vote for McCain and Lieberman together > I hope the GOP does that for 2008 > lol.
How’s life? Not good with Bush as president, but if we survive 2 more years, then perhaps we can dream again?!
July 29th, 2006 at 12:50 am#5- Grandpa Seth- Why not, they won’t believe you either. Republicans did such an amazing job of discrediting any who tried to expose the truth, that they actually managed to screw themselves as well. Bravo!
July 29th, 2006 at 2:52 amMcCain never deserved the “straight-shooter” or “rebel” tags that the media labeled him with. None of this is a surprise to people who knew what he was all about from the beginning.
July 29th, 2006 at 10:13 amGood post!!
July 29th, 2006 at 10:52 amMcCain sux.
July 29th, 2006 at 1:49 pm#5: If the dems, and thats a big if, take the White House in ‘08, can we use the Diebold excuse too?
Not if we passs legislation to get rid of these infernal machines and replace them with an auditable system that has a paper trail. I take it you’ll pressure your representatives to support such legislation?
July 29th, 2006 at 4:22 pm#21: McCain never deserved the “straight-shooter†or “rebel†tags that the media labeled him with. None of this is a surprise to people who knew what he was all about from the beginning.
True. Unfortunately, the media continues to treat Saint McCain with undeserved deference. In truth, he’s every bit as phony and self-interested as all the others: Bush, Cheney, Frist, Lieberman, et al.
July 29th, 2006 at 4:26 pmMcCain’s son just joined the Marines. That’ll look nice on the posters.
