An obscure law approved by a Republican-controlled Congress a decade ago has made the Bush administration nervous that officials and troops involved in handling detainee matters might be accused of committing war crimes, and prosecuted at some point in U.S. courts.
Senior officials have responded by drafting legislation that would grant U.S. personnel involved in the terrorism fight new protections against prosecution for past violations of the War Crimes Act of 1996.

July 28th, 2006 at 10:00 amDLC wants Rep. McKinney gone, but Sen. Joe Lieberman saved?
Friday 28th of July 2006
by Jay Randal
Rep. Cynthia McKinney , of Georgia, has been forced into a run-off election, on Tuesday, August 8th, against the stealth DLC candidate Hank Johnson who came within 2,000 votes of McKinney under mysterious switched Diebold balloting!
The Internet news blogs have reported numerous instances of vote switching, from McKinney to Johnson on the Diebold touch screen voting machines, so fraud is highly suspected!
Georgia has a history of vote manipulation/fraud, since the new type of voting equipment was installed, and in 2002 the Democrat Sen. Cleland defeated by Chambliss mysteriously!
The Democrat Party has been taken hostage , by the DLC, who are completely in bed with the same corporations that fund the GOP, so they are actually more like Republicans!
Sen. Joe Lieberman is one of them, so the DLC is trying at all costs to keep him in the Senate, so even vote fraud can be contemplated in Connecticut in the August primary election!
Rep. McKinney is a maverik on some issues, Anti-Iraq-War, and a defender for downtrodden Georgians, so re-elect her!
( Jay Randal, political activist and writer in Stone Mountain, Georgia.)
July 28th, 2006 at 10:02 amSergeant Lemus’s sworn statement — which was obtained by The New York Times — provides an extraordinary window into the pressures American soldiers face in Iraq, where wartime chaos and the imperative of loyalty often complicate questions of right and wrong.
What is it with military forces? So, they tell you, you go and kill your mother and then you just do it because you want to be a marine. I know, hardly an iraqi will resemble anyone´s mom when it comes to personal feelings but they are the same when it comes to human life. These guys have no excuses at all…Stop the “I was following orders” bullshit. That will excuse german soldiers sending jewish people to Zyklon-B baths and pushing them into Siemens ovens.
July 28th, 2006 at 10:06 amAh folks, you sure can tell that the elections are coming soon.
Republicans on the campaign trail are bashing their own administration, and hoping like hell the wire services dont pick up on their antics.
The war crimes threat to the Bush administration is real, and will heat up after the mid-term elections. It is fitting that they, to include Bush, be charged for all of their crimes.
Crimes against the amurkan people though are another matter. The oil, coal and gas industries were given huge tax breaks by the pukes and still insist on goring the public, and the administration cant do a damn thing about it. Raise taxes on them? No way. Corporate greed is higher now than when Bush took office, and in the wake of his buddy Lays Enron debacle, promised to clamp down on this phenom. He and his congress have done nothing, and look at the result.
The always bad Bush economy is tanking and inflation is on the rise. What will Bush do? Ask congress to give MORE tax breaks to the already filthy rich, the oil companies, etc. Bush is personally taking down the GOP and is proud of it. Whatta guy!
July 28th, 2006 at 10:07 amI guess this is what Condi meant by the “New Middle East.” Morons!
DAMASCUS, Syria, July 27 — At the onset of the Lebanese crisis, Arab governments, starting with Saudi Arabia, slammed Hezbollah for recklessly provoking a war, providing what the United States and Israel took as a wink and a nod to continue the fight.
Now, with hundreds of Lebanese dead and Hezbollah holding out against the vaunted Israeli military for more than two weeks, the tide of public opinion across the Arab world is surging behind the organization, transforming the Shiite group’s leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, into a folk hero and forcing a change in official statements.

July 28th, 2006 at 10:17 amThanks for the dispatch from la-la land, Jay. Where to begin?
The Internet news blogs have reported numerous instances of vote switching, from McKinney to Johnson on the Diebold touch screen voting machines, so fraud is highly suspected!
I think I asked for a link to a source for this before and you failed to produce one. Is today the day? Sway me Jay!
and in 2002 the Democrat Sen. Cleland defeated by Chambliss mysteriously!
That mystery has been solved: Chambliss had greater support, and thus more votes.
The Democrat Party has been taken hostage , by the DLC,
If your party’s gonna be hijacked, might as well be by a group with a proven track record of success. From a standpoint of winning elections, the Democrats are much better off with the DLC than they are with the netroot/Kossacks who have shown nothing if not an ability to back the loser in every race.

Wow, you sure get bitter when rejected, using “gay” as a slur and attacking Ann Coulter’s slender build - funny from a feminist who insist men don’t judge women by their looks, yet, as all men know, women are far more harsh to other women. Truth is, women dress up to prevent other women from either putting them down to other men, or better competing for other men.
I guess you don’t see how you are slashing and burning your own constituents - gays and women, but don’t let me stop you.

July 28th, 2006 at 10:47 amJay, as I recall, the link you gave me was another blog, not any kind of news source.
I think what’s most damaging to your claims of rampant vote fraud is that the website of Rep McKinney has no mention to that. At all.
Would you mind sourcing that again?
As for DLC candidates, I don’t want em. I think the Democratic Party needs them. The DLC represents the center of your party, the wing with the best chances of winning widespread national appeal.
July 28th, 2006 at 10:47 amJason - you are such a sad little man. You know absolutely nothing about women. And for defending lemon faced Ann….that just makes you pathetic!!!

July 28th, 2006 at 10:49 amPost 31 Chase > I never claimed that any corporate owned press reported the vote switching in the McKinney versus Johnson pre-primary election! Many online Internet news blogs reported on it like Truthout.org and Buzzflash.com, etc. > go to Google and type “McKinney primary election in Georgia tainted by alleged vote fraud > July 2006″ > see what turns up? Or try variables of that on Google!
NO we real Democrats do NOT want the DLC traitors in our party! If you Repubs will NOT take them, then we will somehow get them all dumped out of office eventually! WE have a good chance of getting Joe Lieberman out if NO cheating occurs to help keep him in office?!
July 28th, 2006 at 10:59 amBTW, Ann Coutler did very well on Chris Matthews show last night. Chris had to retreat to asking the crowd for support, when his arguments bit the dust.
Oh, and John Bolton BODY SLAMMED John Kerry yesterday. Kerry griped about the “progress” of multi-lateral talks with North Korea, and Bolton replied that’s the reality of multi-lateral talks. John Kerry then asked why the Bush administration doesn’t try bi-lateral negotiations with North Korea like the Clinton administration did, and Bolton responded because the Clinton agreement was a dismal failure - giving North Korea nuclear technology while they still produced nuclear weapons.
July 28th, 2006 at 11:04 am#34, Jay,
Oh, when Republicans win, it’s because they cheat, and if old guard party Dems like Lieberman win, it’s because they cheat….
Wow, you losers just don’t realise how UNPOPULAR your views are. Even most Democrats don’t want to CUT and RUN like you cowards.
July 28th, 2006 at 11:06 amJason LOL the only cowards are Bush lovers like yourself! Most Democrats want Lieberman gone, so if you like him, then invite him to officially join the GOP, instead of being a covert agent for the Bush Regime!
July 28th, 2006 at 11:10 amReply to Jason M. Hendler:
Wow, you losers just don’t realise how UNPOPULAR your views are. Even most Democrats don’t want to CUT and RUN like you cowards.
Is that a fact?
God, you make it easy…
July 28th, 2006 at 11:13 am#34 - Don’t you think that if Rep McKinney herself suspected vote fraud of any kind she would be raising all hell? I haven’t heard her speak on it. There’s not even a mention of it on her website. I don’t think she thinks voter fraud occurred, I don’t think you should either.
BTW - Buzzflash or Truthout aren’t exactly the most levelheaded of sources out there. I’m not saying they can’t stumble across factual items, but they don’t hold themselves to the kind of journalistic integrity and fact-checking that more reputable, as you call them “corporate”media outlets.
The thing Jay, about the DLC, is that they are moderates. In a country where political partisanship closely resembles a bell-curve (that is, the majority of people are in the middle of the ideological spectrum), candidates that appeal to the middle have a better chance of winning.
Far-left candidates, who might perfectly match the positions of a few, even a few hundred thousand, have almost no chance of winning the kind of support necessary to win a national election. The same goes for “far-right” candidates (think Pat Robertson - imagine what would happen to him now if he ran for Pres again).
If the ultimate goals is winning, when supporting a candidate you might have to compromise and accept an individual who is a little right (or left) of you.
Then again, you’re always free to support the Green candidate or whoever with all your might - but you have to admit to yourself the chance of actually winning is nil. It’s a personal decision of adherence to the cause versus winning elections.

July 28th, 2006 at 11:29 amJohn Dean says we have returned to an “Imperial Presidency”
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14062437
#40 - Actually, I was looking at her site on the House.gov server.
Thanks for providing the other link, I hadn’t seen that yet.
After reading it, I’m still unconvinced there was “voter fraud”. You had 1 machine malfunction. You had another voter incorrectly cast their vote. That’s EXTREMELY common: I’ve been an election judge in my country for a few elections. We use ES&S DRE machines, very similar to the Diebold machines. A lot of people (mainly the very elderly) had some issues understanding how to pick and candidate and cast the ballot. We were able to help every person that asked for help. Those that didn’t, well, 2 left without pressing the button to cast the ballot.
The biggest problem we faced were machines with the poll close time improperly programmed. Instead of closing the polls automatically at 7pm, the machines were programmed to close at 8pm. It was a little hectic manually closing each station, and it delayed the return of the results, but at no time was the integrity of the election in jeopardy. The San Antonio Express-News wrote an editorial the next day, leveling baseless accusations of vote fraud, etc. etc. I responded with a letter that was published, counseling for patience and understanding when dealing with new systems and inexperienced workers.
#42 - Truthout operates in a world of supposition. Like I said, from time to time they come across something factual and accurate. But more often than not (from what I’ve seen), things are taken out of context, the conclusion is presupposed, fact-checking is shoddy at best.
July 28th, 2006 at 11:37 amEvery damn day, it is ALWAYS something. I don’t recognize my country anymore, and it is very distressing.

July 28th, 2006 at 11:50 amThe ambulance headlamps were on, the blue light overhead was flashing, and another light illuminated the Red Cross flag when the first Israeli missile hit, shearing off the right leg of the man on the stretcher inside. Want a different perspective of what is happening in Lebanon, then you should really read this: “War Is the Total Failure of the Human Spirit” By Dahr Jamail
and FYI this is Dahr Jamail:
In late 2003, Weary of the overall failure of the US media to accurately report on the realities of the war in Iraq for the Iraqi people and US soldiers, Dahr Jamail went to Iraq to report on the war himself.
His dispatches were quickly recognized as an important media resource. He is now writing for the Inter Press Service, The Asia Times and many other outlets. His reports have also been published with The Nation, The Sunday Herald, Islam Online, the Guardian and the Independent to name just a few. Dahr’s dispatches and hard news stories have been translated into French, Polish, German, Dutch, Spanish, Japanese, Portuguese, Chinese, Arabic and Turkish. On radio as well as television, Dahr reports for Democracy Now!, the BBC, and numerous other stations around the globe. Dahr is also special correspondent for Flashpoints.
Dahr has spent a total of 8 months in occupied Iraq as one of only a few independent US journalists in the country. In the MidEast, Dahr has also has reported from Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. Dahr uses the DahrJamailIraq.com website and his popular mailing list to disseminate his dispatches.
July 28th, 2006 at 12:30 pm#35. I’m not sure we were watching the same interview. Mathews was quoting directly from her books and it was Ann who was back peddling. Even going so far as saying it is the context of the book and not the actual words that should be looked at. Mathews asked her how did she have insight into whether the husbands of women slammed in her book were going to divorce them? She couldn’t answer because she didn’t know that as a fact. And it wasn’t back peddling into the crowd for support, it was taking an informal poll. The volume against was much greater than for Ms. Coulter.
July 28th, 2006 at 12:52 pmThe alleged policy of the U.S. military to “kill all military-age men†is a form of ethnic cleansing. So much for bringing democracy to Iraq.

July 28th, 2006 at 1:57 pm#55, just,
So Chris Matthews packs the audience with libs and runs to them for an informal poll when he can’t make his point. Ann try to convey that liberalism is a religion that has no God, and when Ann challenged Chris Matthews to name a God fearing Democrat - he had to go back 50 years to name one - she nailed him.

So in your estimation, Ann wins a point because Democratic piety is insufficiently conspicuous?
If Ann really took to heart all the venom she is spewing in the name of ‘God’, she might pay a little more attention to the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who had this to say on the topic of conspicuous piety:
Ann, like the rest of the neocon parasites out there, need to stop talking the talk and start walking the walk.

Mathews also asked Coulter how she came up with this notion of them being godless and couldn’t answer. It’s just her opinion and like assholes, everyone has one.

July 28th, 2006 at 5:31 pmU.S. Sgt. Lemuel Lemus has said in a sworn statement that he was given an order to “kill all military-age men†during a raid in Baghdad by a colonel and a captain. The colonel, Lemus’ commanding officer, has refused to testify at any stage of the court-martial, a “very rare†occurrence.

Looks like it.

Some people think Bush has had to take “medication” to relieve job stress (failure can do that). He’s loopy enough already without it. Let the guy take a break instead without feeding him random crap.
