In an interview today with Fox News’ Neil Cavuto, President Bush declared, “We have a very strong military and we can deal with any threat to the homeland there is and will if we have to.”
In reality, “the Army is showing the wear and tear of constant battle after nearly five years of war.” Rep. Ike Skelton, the ranking member on the House Armed Services Committee, recently reported:
Army readiness is in crisis. The administration has brought us here because of a lack of planning and a lack of funding. Today two-thirds of the brigade combat teams in our operating force are unready.
As a result of the crisis, the Army is being forced to cut resources to nondeployed forces to make sure front-line troops stay at the highest combat readiness. Rep. John Murtha explained that these are “the units that could be called upon or would be called upon to go to war in North Korea, Iran, or any other country or region.”
In 2000, Bush explained who should be blamed for a military that is overextended:
So let’s get something straight right now. To point out that our military has been overextended, taken for granted and neglected, that’s no criticism of the military. That is criticism of a president and vice president and their record of neglect. [CNN, 11/3/00]
Today, two-thirds of the Army’s brigade combat teams are a testament to Bush’s record of neglect.
Somehow in someway, I am sure this is Clinton’s fault.

July 31st, 2006 at 4:31 pmCHENEY: For eight years, Clinton and Gore have extended our military commitments while depleting our military power. Rarely has so much been demanded of our armed forces, and so little given to them in return.
George W. Bush and I are going to change that, too.I have seen our military at its finest…with the best equipment, the best training, and the best leadership.
I’m proud of them. I have had the responsibility for their wellbeing. And I can promise them now…help is on the way.
Soon, our men and women in uniform will once again have a commander- in-chief they can respect.
July 31st, 2006 at 4:32 pmI believe at the GOP Convention in 2000, either Cheney or Bush pushed the big lie that there were “2 Divisions not ready for duty”. This was quickly disproven by the Pentagon, but the Big Lie was out. They don’t care.

July 31st, 2006 at 5:04 pmThe US military is in such a mess I doubt if it will ever be corrected, and certainly not in Bush’s time.
All heavy equipment there is needs to be replaced. This makes the military suppliers happy as hell, but you dont see the admnistration pushing for any new equipment because if they do, then the real story of the frightful state of our armed forces will come to light.
So Bushco just keeps giving tax cuts to the rich, tax breaks to the oil companies, and in the meantime our military suffers.
What a syphillitic bastard!

It was Bush in his acceptance speech at the 2000 RNC Convention where he said the famous quote. Download the full audio of the speech here.
Some other choice quotes from that speech:
Highlights include:
* “[Our military is stretched so thin] two entire divisions would have to report, “Not ready for duty.”
July 31st, 2006 at 5:24 pm* “time to end [the] politics of fear.”
* “remember the lessons of Vietnam.”

July 31st, 2006 at 5:54 pmBasically bush has royally screwed the pooch, and everything that the republicans claimed would happen, if the democrats took the white house in 2000, i.e. bigger deficit, overextended military, higher gas prices, etc have come to pass. The only problem is it’s the republicans who are the cause. I am sure that Bush does not want to be reminded of his 2000 acceptance speech, and I am also sure that the standard republican talking point will fall along the lines of “that is so pre-9/11 thinking” or some other bullshit.
this is the points that the democrats should be pushing. The cutting of veterans funding, the stop gap measures, and the lowering of enlistment qualifications to enter the military. The failure to contain Iran, and North Korea. The failure to maintain peace in Isreal. The graft and corruption, Pork and unchecked government spending. Failure to secure borders, and allocate money to fight the very real threat of terrorism, while talking about 9/11 at every turn.
These are the albatross on the neck of the republican party. This is the rope that should hang them.

Jason M. Hendler, our resident Neocon Armchair Quarterback, represents why US Military Troop strength and readiness is in serious jeopardy. Historically, those that supported military action were willing to serve in the armed forces and on the front lines. Jason M. Hendler is indicative of NeoConservatives that are willing to commit US troops to frivolous military missions, but are themselves unwilling to put their own lives on the line for the mission. Having served over 10 years in the United States Armed Forces as an enlisted Infantry Soldier and Non Commission Officer, I find this prevailing neoconservative attitude to be an unacceptable hiderance to mission success and deeply disturbing. I support an immediate reinstatement of the draft. As long as Neoconservatives are willing to send my brothers and sisters to die for their political agendas, they need to be ready to do the same. Without a draft requiring the direct participation from these NeoConservative, Armchair Quarterbacks, such as Jason M. Hendler, they will do everything in their power to avoid facing the same risks to life and limb they impose upon the brave men and women that serve to protect this great country. God Bless America!
Reinstate the draft now and prevent the following draft dodging excuse from being made time and time again by the cowardly Neoconservative:

July 31st, 2006 at 8:42 pmTypical Neocon response. Take a soldier that served honorably and attempt to discredit or portray him as traitor like Ann Coulter did to Max Cleland:
“Max Cleland should stop allowing Democrats to portray him as a war hero who lost his limbs taking enemy fire on the battlefields of Vietnam,” she writes, claiming that he “lost three limbs in an accident during a routine non-combat mission where he was about to drink beer with friends. He saw a grenade on the ground and picked it up. He could have done that at Fort Dix. In fact, Cleland could have dropped a grenade on his foot as a National Guardsman. … Luckily for Cleland’s political career and current pomposity about Bush, he happened to do it while in Vietnam.” –Ann Coulter, Neoconservative

The pot calling the kettle black here. Neocons are the biggest bunch of whiney blamers on the planet. You blame liberals for everything that goes wrong. The truth is, without Liberals you’d be eating food contaminated with mercury and lead, breathing poisonous fumes, drinking polluted water, working for ziltch and collecting no pension or retirement. Essentially you’d be a slave. But although you enjoy many freedoms, you are a slave of another variety. You live in a mental prison no doubt brought upon by a tortured childhood which bleeds into your adult life…a life filled with a variety of boogey men…terrorists trying to kill you, minorities trying to steal your job, liberals trying to raise your taxes…and the list goes on. The truth is, you are powerless because you’ve given all of your power away to your fears. A man who lives in fear can never be free.

Your inability to process information is astounding. There is nothing in my words that gives rise to the notion that I plan ahead to place blame. I was addressing the erroneous belief that the world would be a better place without Republicans and Conservatives. I’ll ask the question again so that you can understand it—Let’s say the Democrats/liberals do win their elections in November and the Presidency in ‘08—What will their defense be when world conditions do not improve, domestic problems worsen, and terror is back on our doorstep? Who will you blame for these things? Who will be the scape goat when Bush is gone, and the Republicans are no longer in power?

NovemberImpeachment,
Thanks for the psychological assessment, but judging by your diagnosis, I’d have to conclude that you’re a quack. There’s no mental prison, no tortured childhood, no boogymen, no irrational fears, and no powerlessness here—try that template on someone else.
To show my appreciation, I have prepared a diagnosis for you;
This statement of yours—The truth is, without Liberals you’d be eating food contaminated with mercury and lead, breathing poisonous fumes, drinking polluted water, working for ziltch and collecting no pension or retirement. Essentially you’d be a slave—is a classic example of someone suffering from Megalomania.
megalomania \meg-uh-lo-MAY-nee-ah; -nyuh\, noun:
1. A mania for grandiose or extravagant things or actions.
2. A mental disorder characterized by delusions of grandeur.
In addition, it seems as though your condition is compounded by some sort of Pollyanna syndrome—a term for a naïve person who always expects people to act decently, despite strong evidence to the contrary.
You can thank me later when you realize that I just saved you thousands in psychiatric evaluations.
