United on Iraq.

“Key Democratic leaders in the House and Senate” — including Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Joseph Biden, and John Murtha — united today “to call on President Bush to begin pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq by the end of the year,” the AP reports. Read their letter.

I’m sorry, I don’t think the Prez will listen.

  4. Southwest Bob says:

The bush/cheney (neocon) goal is all out conflict in the middle east. They will then argue that repubs must remain in control in congrress in order to allow the prez the support to win the “war” against terrorism. “We can’t change horses in mid-stream” will be come the battle cry of the repubs in October.

Swift boating of these dems begins in 4…3….2…1…now. Watch the reichwingers now call them ‘cut and run cowards’ and traitors.

  7. Gregor Samsa says:

Pres Bush has painted himself into a corner. There is no way he can withdraw the troops from Iraq without further damaging his image and his party’s.

After all the calls for “staying the course”, and claims that “Iraq is in the forefront in the war against terrorism”, there is no way his 30-something percent supporters can easily forgive a complete U-turn on this issue. The cognitive dissonance would be too much even for them.

It is more likely that Pres Bush will claim victory has been achieved and come up with a plan for “troop reduction”, if he does anything at all. Needless to say, it will all be smoke and mirrors: US troops are going to stay in Iraq for the foreseeable future, and for as long as the American economy depends on oil.

  9. Just plain mad says:

They are just spinning to their base. Any real pullout would have to eliminate the permanent bases and the “embassy” as well as installations following the pipelines in Afghanistan. It’ll never happen and the people on this list know it. It’s all pretend. They will also continue to vote for more money to go into the military-industrial mob complex where everyone makes more money than what the budget states. The congress and senate are all phonies on both sides.

harry reid voted ‘yes’ last week on the ‘no-rapist-father-left-behind-or-untold-about-his-pregnant-daughter-act’ so, i don’t respect him much, and, most of the senators don’t either.

  11. darby1936 says:

It’s a start. Hopefully the closer to November the more Dems will find their spine. Good for Chuck Hagel today on the Lebanon atrocity by Isreal. This country has truely lost its moral compas.

  12. Jay Randal says:

The pull out of the troops, from Iraq, must begin immediately before the Israelis ignite WWIII, by attacking Syria and then Iran getting involved! The world is on the verge of catastrophe caused by the stupidity of President George W. Bush!

  13. walter66 says:

the U.S military, by not protecting Iraqis have already cut and run.

might as well bring them home if all they are going to do is “sit on their hands”

  14. Alphonse says:

#7: I agree with what you’ve said. You know, at this point, things are so bad in Iraq that I don’t really care if Bush declares “victory,” or how the heck he chooses to spin it, as long as our troops come home safely.

For those of you who have forgotten what this country and others are fighting against, perhaps this will remind you. These radicals Islamofacists showed what they are all about. Watch if you have the guts and don’t tell me that the vision of any Islamofacists group is one of peace. There’ll be peace once they are distroyed completely.

  18. Exley says:

Well done, #16…Many here on this site and within the Democratic Party have (amazingly) already forgotten the horror and mass murders perpetrated by the Islamofascists on 9/11. It is useful to remind them.

  19. Gregor Samsa says:

It is useful to remind them.
    Comment by Exley — August 1, 2006 @ 12:25 am

Hussein, Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.

I just thought I’d remind you both of that.

  21. DieNowForPeace says:

    Jeez,
Quit using 9/11 as your sick justification for your pre-determined mindset, Right-wing lemmings.
Where the f*ck was NORAD on that fateful day? Anyone?
Oh, that’s right, they were playing a war game simulating a terrorist attack the morning of 9/11 which moved the majority of our air superiority OUT OF THE COUNTRY. Then, during the actual hijackings, not the FAA, NORAD or anyone in government could determine if the planes were “terrorist” controlled or part of the drill.
We got played like suckers that day, and unfortunately, our wonderful CIA probaly tipped off Bin Laden as to the perfect day to pull of such a horrendous act.
Otherwise, please explain why the most sophisticated military in the world was unable to protect us that day. The sole job of NORAD is protecting our skies.
There is no other plausible explanation than this.
Why did the event occur on 9/11? Maybe because our military uses dates, numbers, and silly names to code their war games. I don’t think the “terrrrists” were trying to make a poetic statement about our national emergecncy call number.

  22. progressaurus rex says:

    exley, frog,
lovely how you extol the new values of america – fear and a neanderthal’s view of the world.

oooh that bush is such a strong leader- like when he got into office, he started giving aid to the taliban, to the tune of $132 million in 2001. firm, strong leadership.

and then the bush administration had meetings with the taliban 5 weeks before 9/11, after we already knew they were harboring a known terrorist and the man that had already attacked america twice. that’s putting the best interests of america’s citizens and national security first!

    what a great leader!

  23. walter66 says:

we supported and gave money to the Taliban pre-9 11

we support and give money to the pro-Iranian Iraqis

what are we setting ourselves up for now?

“…Many here on this site and within the Democratic Party have (amazingly) already forgotten the horror and mass murders perpetrated by the Islamofascists on 9/11. It is useful to remind them….”

The problem isn’t that we’ve forgotten 9/11. The problem is that the right can’ t remember anything else. What’s worse, they don’t even remember it correctly – they keep on sticking Saddam Hussein in there.

What is this? How does this advance the discussion one whit? For every 1 person killed on 9/11 there are at least 11 dead in Iraq, and probably more like 30.

What is the problem? Is it not enough yet? 30 foreigners per US citizen not hack it? Should it be a hundred or a thousand or a million?

Terrorism cannot be defeated militarily. Not unless you are prepared to kill every man, woman and child with a possible greivance.

In point of fact, the daily dose of outrage, misery, pain, anguish, horror, death, powerlessness and mayhem experienced by Iraqis and Lebanese daily is arguablythe ideal medium to culture the most virulent strain of terrorism imaginable.

If you can’t grasp the perspective of the other “side”, you need look no further than your own understandable and human bloodlust after 9/11. Do you think you are the only human to ever feel this way? Now, make the loss not simply a fellow citizen, or a work colleague, but a sibling, a lover, a parent, a child or a baby. Do you see?

Terrorism can not be defeated militarily, by compounding injustice. It never has been, and it never will be. It is a utopian, blood soaked fools paradise to think otherwise:-(

I’ve been reading your comments as of late, and have become thoroughly disgusted with the likes of you. God only knows what kind of perverse hatred it is that grips the minds of some of the left in this country, but it seems to have you in its grasp as well. Your mind is twisted—turning right into wrong and wrong into right, and your words are poison—filled with bitterness, blame, and cursing. People like you are constantly attempting to muddy the water so that no one can see clearly, and then you believe your own lies. You actually think that you are purveyors of the truth, when in reality you obfuscate the truth. In the Biblical sense—you are tares amongst the wheat—a weed found growing among crops—bad in the midst of good. You can be summed up in a word—Ugly.

  27. Kermit the Freedom Frog says:

Frog (and you sound more like a toad to me), go watch some gun camera video of the Taliban getting shot up, if that makes you feel better.

Israel just gave Hizbollah video just as bad or worse than you’re showing us, and that propaganda tactic works better over there than it does in the USA.

  28. Kermit the Freedom Frog says:

#26 What kind of perverse hatred does it take to stop a war? God only knows.

  29. PLC (PatrioticLiberalChristian) says:

Maybe the Democrats should take a look at some of these photos before they again call for the U.S. to surrender to Al Qaeda Comment by Exley

BushCo surrendered to Al Qaeda once they stopped going after Osama Bin Laden, the perpetrator of 911. BushCo surrendered to Al Qaeda when they began to change our system of government, which Al Qaeda couldn’t do. BushCo surrendered to Al Qaeda when they killed almost as many of our soldiers in Iraq as Osama did in NY. BushCo surrendered to Al Qaeda when they made fear the basis for voting for our leaders. BushCo surrendered to Al Qaeda when they alienated the US from the rest of the world.

  31. Marie says:

    It’s about friggin’ time.
On a related story — the swift boat veterans (with John O’Neill) are mounting their defamation campaign against Murtha.
O’Neill is riding his one-trick pony in the circus sideshow again — will people see him for the liar that he is.
Also related — Move On is pushing the Dems to stop acting like timid DINOs and start representing the people — and the Democratic heirarchy is not happy.
Perhaps this Pelosi letter is something of a reply to that. The dems must be made to understand that many millions of us are sick of this kind of politics and we want revolutionary change.

  32. toofin says:

I think if the media showed persistent coverage of 9/11, even more than it does now, people would cease being scared stupid and start getting just mad enough to start asking questions – REAL questions about how all this happened in the first place. They would start to see past the useful propaganda and fear tactics used shamelessly for political gains to actually squeeze the leadership for a drop of accountability.
