Crisis grows as Israel ‘launches attack deep in Lebanon.’

The AP reports, “The ferocity of the battles in Baalbek and across southern Lebanon on Tuesday, the determination of the Israelis to keep fighting and the minimal diplomatic progress toward a cease-fire all indicate the 3-week-old war is more likely to escalate than end soon.”

olmert, or the other guy? not sure? that is the point...

Loyalty not only in deed, but in character is demanded of you. Loyalty of character often demands no less heroic virtue than does loyalty in deed. Loyalty in character is unbreakable loyalty, a loyalty that knows no ifs or buts, that knows no weakening, Loyalty in character means absolute obedience that does not question the results of the order nor its reasons, but rather obeys for the sake of obedience itself. Such obedience is an expression of heroic character when following the order leads to personal disadvantage or seems even to contradict one's personal convictions. Ehud Olmert's strength as a leader is that he almost always works through the power of his persuasion; rarely does he command. He must know, however, that when he commands, or allows a command to be given, that it will be obeyed absolutely, down to the last block warden.

    1939 or 2006?

Our idea is moving the world, it is forcing humanity to choose for us or against us. It forces the Terrorists from behind their lackeys. They must fight. We want that fight, for we know that if we do not succeed in winning enough ground for our people, everything we have done will be in vain.

it's a war. Israel is going to make it as miserable as they possibly can for hizbollah.

hizbollah provoked Israel, paybacks are a bitch.

whoever has the better army and will to fight and win is going to prevail.

    Israel isn't playing tiddlywinks.

Who is at fault? probably Nazi Germany.

this war is about seventy years old now.

They may say the world is crazy. Well, it is a crazy world, but that is not the decisive thing. The important thing during the decisive battles of the coming months and years is whether or not we can make our people immune to such hocus pocus so that the enemy can no longer reach them. Our people must simply laugh at their doctrines and magic words. Just as we did not overcome Communism only through negation, so too we will not overcome these enemies only through struggle and explanations. Our leader once said: "If you take an idol from people, you must replace it with a true god." Our god is the wonderful law of creation, whose amazing unity of all things shows itself in wonderful flowers, in growing trees, in new born children, in the secrets of a mother, in the growth of our people, in work and accomplishment and creation, in life itself. It is the joy we have in everything. How beautiful everything is. Do you feel the same way? I am so happy to be alive.

had not the Nazis did what they did to the Jews, they would still be living in Germany and Poland.

Now, it is a world of trouble and woe for every single soul.

    blame Mel Gibson too.

These days, war isn't about abiding by the rules. It's anything goes. If hizbollah fires missles at Israel, somehow, people feel it is justified. If Israel bombs buildings where hizbollah is firing missiles and using civilian deaths for political gain, it is Israels fault.

It's war, anything goes. Israel can bomb anything or anybody that they want. so can hizbollah.

there are no rules. the Geneva Convention is a mere nuisance that is in the way.

It's the twenty-first century schzoid world. all the rules are broken.

nobody counts anymore. the rich are getting richer from the wars going on everywhere, and the poor get pure hell.

that is the way it is. the reality of it all is this: Nazi Germany started this war in 1939.

The forgotten war in Iraq is just a preliminary cat fight for things to come.

How much peace has there really been since 1914? not much

nine million soldiers died in WWI. It hasn't stopped since then.

humans are animals. they are content in killng each other. that is the brutal, harsh reality.

  40. Gregor Samsa Says:

Red Cross workers and residents of Qana, where Israeli bombing killed at least 60 civilians, have told IPS that no Hezbollah rockets were launched from the city before the Israeli air strike.

The Israeli military has said it bombed the building in which several people had taken shelter, more than half of them children, because the Army had faced rocket fire from Qana. The Israeli military has said that Hezbollah was therefore responsible for the deaths.

  44. DallasNE Says:

Yesterday I posted the following at http://www.democraticunderground.com.

Israel quickly broke the ceasefire announced by the US as a face-saving gesture for Rice's miserable failure at diplomacy. On the heels of that Israel announced a major call-up of reserve forces.

I'm afraid the genie is out of the bottle this time. And that is mostly because Bush squandered all of his capital on his mistaken invasion of Iraq.

Israel is not only going to create a sizable buffer zone between Lebanon and Israel but also between Lebanon and Syria, trapping 300,000 Lebanoneze inside Syria. At least that is Israel's master plan. Who knows what this may provoke but it certainly will not be a ceasefire. And good luck in getting either a UN or NATO force to bail Israel out.

Today Israel struck 90 miles north of the border making my prediction look pretty spot on, sad though it is. Sistani has warned Bush to rein in Israel and Syria may not sit by idly while Israel occupies a large chunk of Lebanon.

If Israel wants the UN to bail them out in Lebanon the UN should impose the peace agreement that Clinton drew up at Camp David just before he left office. At first Arafat rejected that agreement, then after fighting broke out following Sharon's "visit" to the Temple Mount, Arafat had a change of heart and accepted it. Israel at first accepted it then when Arafat had his change of heart so did Israel as they backed out and would no longer have any part of it. This may be the only hope.

  45. BluesMan Says:

I agree with Plebs comments its all about Israel defending and backing itself up using a multinational force to defend its borders, as israel well knows it will in the very near future strike at Irans nuclear infastructure, and to do this it will also have to put troops on the ground as air power alone will not do the job, once they make this move all hell will break loose and not just in the middle east..........

The disproportional use of Weapons by Isreal

Is about the same as your neighbour throwing a firecracker in your garden and you leveling his house, car and killing his wif and kids because of it

Has anyone here seen the destruction caused by Isreal , towns and villages have been leveled for miles

  47. jurassicpork Says:

Any fool can see that it'll escalate and I'm living proof of that. And I never thought that it would be contained in S. Lebanon. This will get much worse before it gets better.

  48. Tobey Tall Says:

Shiite leaders distance themselves from Iraqi government

The signs of defection are troublesome for U.S. and Iraqi officials, and another possible sign that the American strategy is threatened. The Shiite leaders have pushed for formation of the government more aggressively than any other Iraqi group, and their frustrations come just as American and Iraqi officials had encouraged Sunni Muslims to participate in the nascent political process.

    Comment by Total Information Awareness — August 2, 2006 @ 8:43

Calling something else won't help, although I welcome the idea of the international community having some oversight.

Hizbollah had been launching rocket attacks into border settlements, resulting it must be noted in very few casualties. There is not much difference in the casualty rates inflicted for example, on the British by the IRA. This is not to excuse it you understand, but to put it in context.

Despite several decades of terrorism, the British never bombed Dublin City or our airports, blockaded Dublin port, or took any action that killed hundreds of Southern Irish civilians indiscriminatley, and make no mistake, these options were on the table.

Certainly they made some blunders, and did some dreadful things, but in the main and luckily for all involved, cooler heads prevailed.

Israel would have been much wiser to work carefully with the Lebanese government to eliminate the problem that way, as the British did with Ireland. What does Britian have next door now? A prosperous and confident friendly economy with whom they share a common internal customs border, as well as regular and enthusiastic co-operation on many issues within the EU.

Israel could do far worse than to follow that model, they have been trying collective punishment for 50 years, and you certainly couldn’t claim that it’s working. Time to look to conflicts were there has been widespread resolution, and try a different approach.

  52. Rebel With A Cause Says:

I was in Beirut in the 70'S. Lebanon, and the city, was a beautiful place then. Look at it now.

I remember the casinos north of town on the seaside. Your hotel in Beirut would furnish limo service to the casinos. It was an idyllic time, but somehow things seem to have gotten out of control.

What a waste. Israel and the world have handled this matter atrociously.
