Majority Whip Blunt: If I Stay In Charge, Congress Won’t ‘Do Anything Meaningful’ On Climate Change»

Today in Energy and Environment Daily (sub. req’d), House Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO) said that if he remains in power after the November elections, there will be no action on global warming for the entire 110th Congress:

Continued Republican House and Senate majorities would likely mean more of the same on climate. House Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) said he would oppose global warming mandates if Republicans control the 110th Congress. “I think the information is not adequate yet for us to do anything meaningful,” he said.

Actually, thousands of scientists have agreed that global warming is real, humans are responsible for much of it and, unless steps are taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, there will be extremely serious consequences.

61 House members – including Rep. Jim Leach (R-IA) – understand this and have co-sponsored Rep. Henry Waxman’s Safe Climate Act. Waxman’s bill is a serious and practical effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. You can find more information of the Safe Climate Act here.

The core objection is that it might cost an awful lot of money. However, if you consider risk and do a modest cost benefit analysis, including those risks, this does not appear to be the case. Sweden already generates 25% of it’s electricity from renewables and it has a great economy, similar growth to the US and social services so good that it’d make you guys faint, and yet people still work, freaky, huh?

The “black helicopter” conspiracy, is that it is an effort by the unified global network of eco terra-ists to slow US growth. Not a bad idea really given the US is the biggest per capita polluter, but I never given much credence to conspiracy theories.

Given that we “don’t know enough” (translation : I’m not convinced) we should take no action. That seems to be it in an … aha …. “nut” shell:-)

Obviously the repubs have decided that big business (especially oil producers) will continue to support them if they do nothing about global warming. Oh my God do they ever lie.

All of them: Big Auto, Big Oil, BushCo, Pennzoil and Havoline and Saudi Arabia and crusty Alaska Senator Ted Stevens and the oil lobbyists and lackey scientists working for the Department of Energy and all the rest, on down the line and right up to your garage door.

Lie lie lie lie lie like evil little ratdogs because they are, after all, corporate greedmonkeys and war profiteers and duplicitous oil-sucking cretins (is that too polite?) who would eat their own mother’s heart for a notable uptick in share/barrel price. Nevertheless, it’s always a bit of a jolt when you see it all up close and personal and they basically rub it in your face.

Just look. Look over here. It’s a new sports car. It’s a new sports car that looks deliciously like a Lotus Elise and reportedly drives like Michael Schumacher’s wet dream and goes from zero to 60 in about four seconds with so much torque and freakishly instantaneous power it makes the gods swoon.

This car, it has a top speed of 130 mph. It has a range of 250 miles. It also has GPS navigation and air-conditioning and air bags and it surely will come with a very badass sound system. It has heated seats and (I presume) iPod integration and Bluetooth. You know, just like a real car.

Oh, and by the way, this car? It’s completely silent. It is 100-percent emissions-free. Doesn’t even have a tailpipe. Because it has no internal combustion engine of any kind.
It’s not a hybrid. It’s pure electric, powered by a “3-phase, 4-pole AC induction motor,” which I’m sure is rather impressive if you know what the hell it means. But it means one thing for certain: The only oil in this car is in the buffing fluid for the leather seats.

  23. madashell Says:

But they lie, most of all, about how much we still require foreign oil, because these billion-dollar corporations claim they can’t possibly afford to develop sufficiently advanced technology in your lifetime to create a 100-percent emissions-free, oil-free, ultragreen vehicle that still has all the comforts and performance of a regular car.

Nice pipe dream, they say. Here, have a bloated SUV, they say. Sorry about all your dead kids in Iraq, they add, smirking like a chimp and blowing their noses into a big pile of Halliburton profits.

Did you already know? Did part of you suspect that we could be, if we were directing our country’s massive resources at all correctly, already mass-producing the technology that could quickly wean us from our dependence on foreign petroleum?

Did you already calculate that if even a fraction of the $300 billion — a truly staggering amount — we’ve wasted on BushCo’s failed and disgusting war could have gone to revolutionizing our nation’s energy infrastructure (like, say, funding large-scale development of the Roadster’s technology), instead of annihilating a pip-squeak nonthreatening nation over its oil reserves while simultaneously serving as the most successful terrorist-recruitment poster in world history, the United States could be considered the epicenter of integrity and invention once again? Of course you did.

But oh wait. Such an obvious, lucid redirection of resources and ideology would require someone with true vision in the White House. Someone with integrity. And intelligence. And fearlessness. And an articulate understanding of complex ideas. And a Congress to match. Never mind.

Everyone else on the planet can see the oncoming train. Why can’t the repugnacans?

It’s because they have absolutely no foresight and they can’t understand the relationship between cause and effect. It’s a nebulous concept to them. Things just happen. If good things happen, they take credit for them. If bad things happen, it’s Clinton’s fault.

And the other reason is that they just don’t give a rat’s ass. They don’t think global warming is going to shut off their air conditioners. They think they’re going to be sheltered from it all inside their little gated communities. And they really don’t care what happens outside of the gates.

Hello my fellow Americans. I just stopped in to say hi to everyone and to quickly explain my position on Global Warming. You see…this deal in the middle east is really a sign from God. We are facing an inevitable World War III and Armageddon. Don’t you see what this means? It means that there is no need to be concerned about Global Warming or anything else other than salvation because God will soon be taking the chosen to live with him in Heaven everlasting. And as we all know, the way to salvation is to assist God in irradicating all non believers from the face of the earth. We must prove our loyality to God by doing his good work. Its time for Americans to join with the Republican party by not concerning ourselves with matters that are irrelevant: The Environment, Retirements, Equal Rights, Higher Wages…this is all meaningless since we will soon be engaged in the Rapture and the earth will be cleansed by the hand of God. Let us pray now, thy will be done, thy kingdom come.
    Amen

And yet the Dems still just don’t GET IT. Fake war on terrorism. Stolen elections. The NeoCon permanent war agenda. And the Dems just play along.

One thing’s for sure, they better wake up soon or the planet is toast. Unfortunately I heard Sen. Reid on Ed Schulz last week, and, he still doesn’t get it. He’s behind Israel all the way… and is too thick to realize the NeoCons are just using the long history of conflict between Israel and Palestine as cover to launch the NeoCon Permanent War.

Idiot. Like Charlie Brown and the football, getting fooled over and over again…

Hey Think Progress folks, I know things are bleak right now, but here’s something we can all do–support Clint Curtis for Congress down in Florida. Curtis was the programmer hired by Bush crony Tom Feeney to write vote-flipping software. Now Curtis has set his sights on Feeney’s congressional seat. This will be a beautiful battle if Curtis can win the primary, which will finally force election fraud onto the front pages. Curtis is a fearless fighter for democracy and knows first-hand what sick bastards these NeoCons are.

Please give anything you can, even if it’s only 5 bucks, to support the only congressional candidate with the balls and the experience and the desire to fight the NeoCon election-stealing machine–Clint Curtis.

Check out his web site at http://www.clintcurtis.com and stop by and contribute your thoughts at Curtis’ rather entertaining and frank blog.

To borrow a phrase from Condi, this means that in this case, as opposed to Iraq, they would like for the proof to be in the form of a mushroom cloud, or flooded New York, or an uninhabitable desert like Las Vegas. The pre-emptive doctrine for national security only goes so far.

But….but…the Germans think there’s global warming. And the French think their’s glopbal warming. And the rest of the whole freakin’ world thinks there’s global warming. When it comes to war, it’s good enough that other people think action is justified. But not global warming.

Surprise! A Republican leader in a “do nothing” Congress promises to do nothing.

  59. katy Says:

listening to franke, guest jonathon alter… his latest newsweek article is particularly important to this discussion… in part, and i’ll have to give away the ending also:

‘The Putting of First Things First’
The revival of the romance of the antiwar left is a potential disaster for the Democrats. It’s what gave the world Richard Nixon in 1968

But there’s something psychologically deeper going on in this campaign that is both understandable and depressing—a cannibalistic distraction from what should be the top priority of Democrats, namely booting Republicans. The same Democrats who are justifiably angry with Lieberman for not holding Bush accountable are harming efforts to, well, hold Bush accountable.

But if the blogs aren’t a force on the ground, they are becoming a powerful factor in directing the passions (and pocketbooks) of far-flung Democratic activists. They’re helping fuel a collective version of what shrinks call “projection,” where the anger of Democrats at Bush is projected on a handy target, in this case Lieberman. But in doing so, they have neglected what FDR called “the putting of first things first.” Job one for Democrats is identifying which Republican House incumbents are vulnerable in their own states and directing all available energy against them. Savaging fellow Democrats (except those who cannot win) should come after taking control, not before.
The challenge facing voters this year is not to hold Democrats accountable for their heresies but Republicans accountable for where they have taken the country. They are the ones in power…

  60. Robin Grant Says:

Sure the GOP keeps handing Dems easy targets for the upcoming elections, but the Dem leadership has said time and time again, ‘We will NOT lift a finger to fight the GOP’. There are only 5 Democrats in all of Congress, the rest are under-cover Republicans.

To Blunt and Inhofe (who said somthing similar last week) I quote Grouch Marx:
“Who are you going to believe? Me, or your lting eyes?”

  61. jimb Says:

    #60
    katy,
I listened to that Jonathan Alter interview, too. I think he has great instincts most of the time, but I’ll disagree with him on Lieberman. A vote against Lieberman is just like a vote against Bush. A vote for Lieberman says “It’s okay if you coddle the Republicans. There will never be a price to pay for it.” Whoever the Democratic candidate for that seat is, he’s going to win it. This isn’t like trying to take down Ben Nelson or some other moderate-to-conservative Democrat in a red state. There’s no danger of losing the seat, and Lieberman is not only soft on the Republicans, he’s hostile towards Democrats.

  62. Alphonse Says:

#60: Savaging fellow Democrats (except those who cannot win) should come after taking control, not before. The challenge facing voters this year is not to hold Democrats accountable for their heresies

I don’t consider it “savaging” Joe Lieberman to support Ned Lamont in the primary. Nor do I consider it to be punishing Lieberman for his “heresies.” I support Lamont in the primary because he’ll be a better Senator than Lieberman. The reason we have primaries is so that the people in the party can select a candidate we support, rather than being stuck with one we don’t support. It’s not some sort of enforced orthodoxy; it’s just, you know, democracy. What about this is so difficult to understand?

  63. Peter Christian Says:

    Katy,

I think Alter is wrong. Lieberman has demonstrated time and again that he doesn’t support core Democratic values. For Democrats to follow only the tactical expedient and support him would surrender the strategic need to communicate these laudable and popular core values. The right already gets far too much traction with their “Democrats don’t stand for anything” noise. There is a real difference between Democrats and Republicans. Joementum can’t demonstrate the same degree of difference; he should go. We must stop sacrificing overall strategy for short-term tactical advantage.

Alter says we have to avoid holding Democrats accountable in favor of holding Republicans accountable. I think we need to do both.

Job one for Democrats is identifying which Republican House incumbents are vulnerable in their own states and directing all available energy against them.
each of us, in our respective state and district, need to pick a dem candidate, at least one, and work to get that person elected - that is alter’s message… at least that is what he was most adament about during his talk with franken… and it’s what i’ve been trying to make those who think 3rd party voting is the thing to do now… that would be a sure disaster…

The challenge facing voters this year is not to hold Democrats accountable for their heresies but Republicans accountable for where they have taken the country.

This one will be ‘create a set of alternative energy sources so we can be self-sufficient, or DAMN near it, and EVERY ONE ON THE FREAKIN’ PLANET WILL PURCHASE OUR TECHNOLOGY’. The by product, of course, is that we will start to address global warming at the same time.

But no. The encephelitic Senator is too damn stupid to even think of the long term, or the people he represents, or his country. He’s only thinking about his stocks, his bonds and his short term goals.

    Dumbass.

A reminder: Blunt is from Missouri. His son is governor of Missouri. We have a senatorial election in this state this year. If Jim Talent (who has routinely voted for the Bush agenda) is reelected, Missouri will continue to back the pro-Bush agenda including its stall-as-long-as-you-can-on-global-warming policy. Missourians with strong feelings on this issue should vote for Claire McCaskill in November.

It states that our decisions need to be based on “scientific criteria and not on irrational preconceptions”.

Bill Clinton and Al Gore had an honest scientist fired for wanting to properly research global warming. William Happer, then of the Department of Energy, wanted to perform a proper survey of how much ultraviolet radiation was reaching the Earth, to see if the ozone hole was really a problem. Nobody had yet performed such a study, and claims of increased ultraviolet radiation were based on theory. At this suggestion, he was fired by Katie McGintey.

Blunt’s record shows he’s as corrupt as DeLay
Republicans would like you to believe that since Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX) yesterday resigned his leadership post, they have cleaned up their act. But a quick look at DeLay’s replacement, Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO), shows the GOP has once again opted to be led by one of Congress’s most corrupt figures.
    Just look at the record:

BLUNT DOES FAVORS FOR SON-TURNED-TOBACCO-LOBBYIST: “Only hours after Rep. Roy Blunt was named to the House’s third-highest leadership job” he tried “to quietly insert a provision benefiting Philip Morris USA into the 475-page bill creating a Department of Homeland Security…The new majority whip, who has close personal and political ties to the company… Blunt has received large campaign donations from Philip Morris, his son works for the company in Missouri and the House member has a close personal relationship with a Washington lobbyist for the firm.” Blunt later married Philip Morris’s lobbyist. – Washington Post, 6/11/03

BLUNT DOES FAVORS FOR SON-TURNED-LOBBYIST, PART II: “In April, for instance, Blunt managed to have a provision inserted into a Senate bill, without debate, on behalf of United Parcel Service Inc. and FedEx Corp. The two companies were seeking to block the expansion of a foreign rival’s U.S. operations. Blunt’s son Andrew also represents UPS in Missouri, as the Wall Street Journal first reported, and the two companies have contributed a total of $120,000 to Blunt since 2001, according to Federal Election Commission data.” – Washington Post, 6/11/03

BLUNT SECURES ETHICS WAIVER AFTER MARRYING TOBACCO LOBBYIST: “Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) had a happier year, marrying a prominent lobbyist and obtaining the House ethics committee’s permission not to report their wedding gifts.” – Washington Post, 6/17/04

BLUNT USES LOBBYISTS AS DE FACTO WHIPS TO PASS CORPORATE TAX CUT: “Blunt’s mobilization of the lobbying community proved crucial in winning passage” of a massive special-interest tax cut bill in 2004. Though the public opposed the bill, Blunt had a “solution to breaking the logjam: Every major lobbying interest got something… The task of rounding up the votes was delegated by Blunt’s whip operation to a coalition of lobbyists, all of whom had clients with huge stakes in the outcome.” – Washington Post, 5/17/05

BLUNT USES SAME CONSULTANT UNDER INDICTMENT WITH DELAY: “The political committee of Rep. Roy Blunt, who is temporarily replacing Rep. Tom DeLay as House majority leader, has paid roughly $88,000 in fees since 2003 to a consultant under indictment in Texas with DeLay, according to federal records… Records on file with the Federal Election Commission show the fund linked to Blunt retains Ellis’ firm, J.W. Ellis Co., and has made periodic payments for services. Political Money Line, a nonpartisan Internet tracking service, places the total at about $88,000.” – AP, 9/29/05

BLUNT HAS CLOSE TIES TO LOBBYIST UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION: “Rep. Blunt and his staff have close connections to uber-lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who is the subject of criminal and congressional probes. In June 2003, Mr. Abramoff persuaded Majority Leader Tom DeLay to organize a letter, co-signed by Speaker Hastert, Whip Roy Blunt, and Deputy Whip Eric Cantor, that endorsed a view of gambling law benefitting Mr. Abramoff’s client, the Louisiana Coushatta, by blocking gambling competition by another tribe. Mr. Abramoff has donated $8,500 to Rep. Blunt’s leadership PAC, Rely on Your Beliefs. If, as it appears, Rep. Blunt was accepting campaign contributions from Mr. Abramoff in exchange for using his official position so support a view of gambling law that would benefit Mr. Abramoff’s client, he would be in violation of the law.” – Citizens for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington, 9/27/05

BLUNT TRIES TO GIVE “ONE-OF-A-KIND” EXEMPTION TO COMPANY UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION: “Westar, the biggest electric utility in Kansas, is seeking an exemption that would free it from new oversight by the Securities and Exchange Commission…The company wanted the one-of-a-kind exemption inserted in a wide-ranging energy bill. It was criticized as the kind of loophole that contributed to the failure of Enron Corp….House Republicans were pushing the provision at the request of two Missourians, GOP Reps. Sam Graves and Roy Blunt… state regulators [had] barred the company from splitting off its unregulated business [and] a congressional exemption ‘would have the effect of removing an important obstacle to Westar splitting its companies and leaving non-utility debt with the utility companies,’ Kansas Corporation Commission chairman John Wine wrote” on the same day Westar disclosed it was the target of a federal investigation. –

  94. PBR Says:

The truth is, Blunt has so many connections to people and companies under investigation by federal law enforcement you’d think you were reading about a gangster, rather than one of America’s most powerful politicians

We must vilify any elected officials who dare contradict the received wisdom delivered by celebrities, foreign leaders, and international bureaucrats.

yes, sure blunt’s a jackanape, but seriously, does he not have any advisors to tell him that it’s basically moronic to say, as a public servant, that you’re not going to take “meaningful” action? especially in the middle of a heat wave?

    Comment by muckdog — August 2, 2006 @ 7:39 pm

Muckdog, you need to go back and re-read your Crichton NOVEL. First of all, there is no such thing as the “Heidelburg Appeal to Heads of States and Governments” despite the link to your fake website. There WAS a thing called the “Heidelberg Appeal”, that was sponsored by Big Tobacco and asbestos companies. It said absolutely nothing about climate change, and in no way “stated just the opposite” of the aforementioned petition to combat global warming. Here is a proper link to the wikipedia entry about the Heidelberg Appeal:

Muckdog, you made a very feeble attempt at misinformation. Only an idiot would take the word of a link provided by the likes of you. The sad thing is that you probably actually believe the nonesense that you spew. Try shutting off Fox/Limbaugh et al and using your brain for a change.

BTW I am a PhD candidate at the most respected institution in the world for the study of climate change. ALL of the scientists in the field absolutely believe in human induced climate change.

  103. Alphonse Says:

#89: I see nothing in the link you’ve provided that disputes the findings of the International Panel on Climate Control, the National Academy of Sciences, the joint science academies of the G8 nations, or any of the over 1000 studies that link global warming with human activities. What do you think this link proves?

William Happer, an appointee of Bush Senior, was rightfully fired from his post at the DOE because he wasn’t interested in studying ozone or climate change, but simply in confirming his already determined position. His goal was to sabotage the work that was being done at the DOE, not to pursue any new or cutting-edge science.

They will have us kill each other while they rule the empires of the east and the west until we are subjegated entirely for they barter in human blood as they move the chess pieces into place. Rejecting the hive and thinking for thyself is our only hope.

The same book, which by the way, that says bats are birds and the rabbit (hare) chews the cud. Smart book, smart people….

  108. Farrapo Says:

The religious right can’t believe in global warming because it was not mentioned or foreseen in the bible. For whatever reason they have a psychological need to believe, contrary to all evidence, that major activities on earth were predicted a long time ago by a supernatural being talking to people taking notes in the desert. Accepting global climate change would damage their faith in grand scale determinism, particularly if the cause is agreed to be human activity. If there were a biblical mention they would believe in it, but it would be an “act of God” so there would not be any point in doing anything about it because he wanted it that way and what he says goes for the planet forever. If you want to deal with global warming, first eradicate faith-based “reasoning” by curing the mental illness that drives it. That’s the cause of most problems on earth.

  109. Coffins draped with flags Says:

Individual states should create their own policies addressing global warming. Obviously the denial stage is continuing, but sooner or later the very wealthy will become some of the most vocal doomsayers about global warming.

  113. John Zyskowski Says:

Following comment #1’s lead, we can not leave our nations energy, and global warming solutions in the hands of policy makers in D.C. While some are putting their best foot forward with solutions, the majority is sitting down, waiting for more clarity, once again.
American consumers have the right and ability to select less polluting energy, domestic renewable energy, by increasing their demand. Consumers have many options either with their local utility or with clean energy marketers. Exchanging our nations current energy production with clean renewable energy will do more than just address global warming, it will also create more US jobs, lessen our dependency on foreign and fossil fuels while doing so. We need to lower all the global warming contributors, not just CO2, and the best way to do so is by supporting the generation of clean American energy.
So, as a fellow American, I say we know what to do, and it is up to us.

Here are some choices to choose clean energy:

  129. Adrian Smith Says:

The real reason for this is because the republicans don’t want us worrying about what happens when we run ut of FUEL, not energy. Fuel. Global warming is a great distraction that people can argue about forever. Sooner or later the oil will be gone, and the natural gas. The economies of the world need more and more fuel and there is only a finite amount.

If you think global warming is going to be catastrophic, then without major changes in policy to modify our infrastructure, it’ll be a picnic compared to the food riots and the poverty and sickness because EVERYTHING will stop pretty much.

    There’s the real reason…

  130. David Ardell Says:

Someone please ask Roy Blunt why, if there isn’t “adequate information to do anything meaningful,” the big Swiss reinsurance firm, Swiss Re, a big reinsurance firm, is going “carbon neutral” by selling their greenhouse gas emissions on carbon trading markets? The company apparently “says it is going carbon neutral partly to fight global warming, which damages its business by causing more extreme weather, and therefore more claims against its policies. But it also hopes to gain experience of a new type of risk which it can manage on behalf of its customers.” (”Upset about offsets”,The Economist, Aug 3rd, 2006). The Economist further reports that “various emissions-belchers have joined the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX), which requires them to eliminate or offset 6% of their emissions by 2010″ and allows its members to buy credits to offset their carbon emissions. “Its membership has grown from 23 firms at the end of 2003 to 210 now, including such corporate titans as Motorola, DuPont and Ford.” If Big Business is taking climate change seriously, how can government justify hiding its head in the sand?

  131. Andrea Lawrence-Stuart Says:

After thinking my issue about this and watching pretty carefully, I find it rather inane for people to make global warming a partisan issue. It seems Democrats are supposed to think there is, Republicans think there isn’t. Why not just realize there is? It is happening. We should be spending our money on preserving the planet, not talking about the “second coming”. The conservative religious right is totally out there, off the charts.

There’s a great series of two articles in http:www.ilfpost.org by Jane Poynter who lived inside Biosphere 2 for more than two years, and her articles are well worth watching. They are called “Environmentalism is Dead, Long Live Environmentalism.”
