Focus on the Family Disinvited From Atlanta Braves’ ‘Faith Day’ Events

Last week, the Atlanta Braves became the first team in major league baseball to sponsor a post-game Christian evangelizing event called “Faith Day.” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution provided details:

The blend of big-tent evangelism and the national pastime is expected to draw thousands of new eyes. … [The event is] designed to reach out to people looking for a spiritual purpose in life. Faith Day is the first promotion of “intentional Christian ministry” in Major League Baseball.

Except the Faith Day festivities didn’t offer a “big tent.” The event was cosponsored by right-wing group Focus on the Family, which, according to their press release, used the event to distribute promotional materials about a website they run called TroubledWith.com, which features virulently anti-gay content:

Male homosexuality is a developmental problem that is almost always the result of problems in family relations, particularly between father and son. [Link]

The following factors can also contribute to the homosexual orientation: pornography; spousal abuse in the home; molestation and pedophilia… [Link]

‘Mom…I’m Gay’: The story of one woman who heard these devastating words. [Link]

Contacted yesterday by ThinkProgress, Braves spokesperson Beth Marshall said that the Braves have asked that Focus on the Family not be affiliated with the two upcoming Braves “Faith Day” events on August 13 and August 26. Marshall declined to explain what brought about the decision to exclude Focus on the Family from the future events.

Unfortunately, Focus on the Family remains a cosponsor of several other Faith Day events at baseball games this summer, which are organized by a group called Third Coast Sports. Email the CEO of Third Coast — mike@thirdcoastsports.com — and urge him to completely sever their ties with the anti-gay group.

There’s no crying in baseball, and there shouldn’t be bigotry either.

    3. I also have a video chronically the story of one poor woman’s plight, entitled “Oh, my God, my daughter is dating a right-wing bigot”.

I disagree. Criticism is acceptable toward ANY organization. Legal limitations of private organizations, however, is most un-American and unacceptable. If MLB, the Boy Scouts, or any other organization wants to make decisions for running itself on the basis of religion that must be allowed but can certainly be criticized and boycotted by opponents.

I understand what you are saying about government and private organizations. But it is pertinent to the large far right christian movement. Focus on the Family is like the KKK. Christian groups with nothing but bigotry and hate to fuel their followers deceitful hearts. Hopefully this disinvite to Focus on the Family is a continuing trend showing that true Christians want to take their religion back from zealots.

Yup – and like Focus on the Family has any credible credentials. Why is it that the most anti-family organizations always use “family” in their title – it’s like they think they have a lock on how families should be run.

Homosexuality is just that – attraction to the same sex – pretty simple.

My family accepted me a long time ago.

Focus on the Family (FOTF) fluff:

Male homosexuality is a developmental problem that is almost always the result of problems in family relations, particularly between father and son.

Of course, Dobson and FOTF have the answer for such problems:

“Meanwhile, the boy’s father has to do his part. He needs to mirror and affirm his son’s maleness. He can play rough-and-tumble games with his son, in ways that are decidedly different from the games he would play with a little girl. He can help his son learn to throw and catch a ball. He can teach him to pound a square wooden peg into a square hole in a pegboard. He can even take his son with him into the shower, where the boy cannot help but notice that Dad has a penis, just like his, only bigger.”

When I read this – and it’s on the FOTF website and the fact that Dobson said this specifically is really scary.

I never showered with my dad when I was growing up so I never saw his private parts. That James Dobson suggests that this is a way to raise young boys is twisted. Seems like the right-wing have this thing about young boys. No surprise – they’re so obsessed with sex but at the same time repress their true feelings…. ’nuff said.

This wouldn’t surprise me – as I said, I think the RR is psycho when it comes to sex – they “don’t like it” yet they want it. I’d suggest that Dobson submit to voluntary neutering – surely at his age he isn’t going to “breed”, so no need for those breeding parts – just chop ‘em off.

Why not educate people here instead? I live in a suburb of Atlanta, where I am now teaching high school juniors and seniors about Architecture. Except that’s not all I’m teaching them.

I’ve planted their first architectural seeds that insist upon respect for the environment, keeping an open-mind, removing past prejudices and equality for all people. And this was just the second day.

It takes time to change a culture, but since change is inevitable, we can look to history to see how it is done and how to implement it in a positive direction. I believe that answer is through awareness and education. Make hate an unacceptable thing to do.

As long as they do it with respect, I think that is a GREAT idea. If they are negative with it, it only further endorses the notion that they are ‘evil’…

I believe most people who are anti-gay don’t actually know anyone gay in the open. When you know people who are gay, black, female, Hindu, etc., you tend to dismiss stereotypes and instead judge people on their actions…

Nice idea – it truely is – but it doesn’t explain why a large portion of America still feels that same-sex marriage should be illegal. Of course, Dobson and his buddies have a lot to do with that – push their “religious agenda” while writing about things like “daddy’s penis”.

Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is far more popular :)

The problem with religion is that you cannot disprove that negative, especially when it is based on faith and not fact. I do believe that it will take generations, but look how far women and blacks have come in being accepted. Sure, it’s still not ideal, but as long as there is fear, I don’t think it ever will be. Some people will always hate someone different than they are, you know?

Being a molester is a perversion, but I would think that if you were a hetero pervert, you would be paractcsing on young girls, and not young boys?

It’s a private organization, more importantly it is a Christian organization.

Part of fundamental/traditional/historic/biblical Christian belief is that homosexuality goes against God, and is a sin.

For you to be upset that a Christian organization opposes homosexuality is absurd, it be like being upset that Christians teach that there is only one god, or saying that Christians are anti-semetic because they teach that Jesus is the Messiah.

Its just utter foolishness, the bible teaches explicitly against homosexuality in many places, and to be upset that a Christian would actually believe the bible and in turn preach those beliefs befuddles me.

I know some will say that the bible does not teach against homosexuality, this view is just plain wrong. The simple reading of Romans 121:27 shows that the bible does not teach that homosexual relations are ok.

21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

im not saying that you have to believe that the bible is the word of god. all im saying is that they do, and it teaches against homosexual behavior. they believe it to be a sin, its not bigotry to speak out against it. it would be no different than someone speaking out against pedophilia or polygamy. its not bigotry!

as long as they speak out against the sin and not the person its not bigotry.

and again….its a Christian group…. to think that they should be pro-gay is absurd

  83. Karl says:

I was raised fundamentalist, went to Bible college in Tennessee, and worked for some big bishops in South Carolina and Mississippi until I became disillusioned. There were some good people, but they were not in positions of power. Some of the most unethical, vile people I have known were pentacostal preachers. These are very charismatic people, and slimey on the underbelly – but amazingly, they are still self righteous. They have to have someone to attack – it is an emotional religion and does not appeal to the intellect. In the words of Eric Hofer, “Any group can survive without a God, but no group can survive without a devil.” If you disagree, you are invited to find another “church home.” I’m glad I woke up in time – you couldn’t drag me back into a christian church. This is just another example of their foolishness.

there are a lot of corrupt people in our society.

is it any wonder that they would seek places of power in our churchs, synogougs, and mousq?

there are many good christian churches out there. the one you ended up in sounds like a very destructive church, where you were on the outside of a church hudle… and god knows you dont get peoples best side whey your on the outside of the hudle.

there are churches that are not destructive, and they nurture spiritual growth.

please do not assume that the whole of christianity is bunk because you have met some lousy practicioners

  85. David B says:

#86, yea, whatever. #87, you miss the whole point. As you point out, if being gay is against God’s teachings, then why can’t you people let God judge human action? We don’t need you so called christians passing judgement and forcing your beliefs on everyone. Tell me, how does someone being gay even affect your life? It doesn’t, so let them alone, if they’re wrong, well that’s between them and God, doesn’t involve you or your group. Try worring about your own salvation rather than everyone elses, I’m sure you’ll have plenty to do.

  86. chester says:

i dont know that i am equip to answer your argument fully, so fogive me if i fumble a bit.

you state that it does not affect my life, therefore i should mind my own business and stop “forcing your beliefs on everyone”.

well my short answer is that it does affect my life. it affects the society in which i live in and i have every right to speak out against things which i feel harm my culture.

1st of all homosexuals dont want tollerance. they want acceptance, and not as a person, the want their way of life accepted as being equally on par with that of heterosexuals.

its not enough to have equal rights, civil unions, legal status in wills, medical decisions, and inheritence. they want marriage. which traditionally has been one man and one woman, and has been an institution respected, and honored through out history.

i would argue that it is the homosexuallys who are forcing their beliefs on everyone else.
you have a relative few # of people telling the majority that the deffinition of marriage must change to include their perversion. its wrong.

they want tolerance, thats fine, i have no problem letting them live the life they want. but they are not happy with just being gay, they want being gay to be accepted as co-equal way of life by society, and it should not be.

as for marriage, there is good reason why married couples recieve special status, privlages, inheritence, social programs, tax break (sorta) its because marriage means kids (usually). so society honors marriage, and the service it offers society thought the rearing of families, as such marriage is an institution that society has set up as being good and protected.

marriage has been under attack for some time however, which has lead to a 50% divorce rate, and a decline in societal morals. we dont need another blow to the institution of marriage by equating the union of man and woman, raring a family, to that of a homosexual relations.

there is a differnce, no matter how much they want to argue that their is not. if given a vote, this country would overwhelmingly oppose homosexuallity and gay marriage, …. so whos pushing whos beliefs here ? its the homosexuals that need to step back and understand that it is THEIR way of life that is out of the NORM, and that they nedd to be the ones that accept that.

they should be tollerated and respected as people, loved as gods children, but there actions should never be allowed to be considered equally on par with that of a man and a woman coming together to raise a family.

    just my thought.

    i know you disagree.

Ah yes, the classic “Blame the victim” defense. It’s OUR fault we want to simply be treated with decensy and equality, and not discriminated against. Of course, it’s all so simple! Allow me to distill your message to it’s base element:
“Them uppity fags need to learn their place. If they wants to be that way, that’s fine, long as I don’t need to see’em or ever think they’s actually human.”

Give me a SINGLE logical reason how same-sex marriage will hurt marriage. Or is it that you just don’t like the thought of your exclusive club being open to others? Typical of your ilk.

Homophobia and racism are two sides of the same coin, you realize.

Oh, and please, for the love of Bruce Campbell, learn how to capitalize the words at the beginning of a sentence. Maybe then I’ll only get a headache from your bigotry, rather than that and your grammar as well.

  89. Gay Bear says:

“I Hate Liberals” = Chris, Reddog, Moonbat Patrol — all of which are the names used by one very latent homosexual. Tsk.

  90. Gay Bear says:

Homophobia: Irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals.

Latent homosexuality is an erotic inclination toward members of the same sex which is not consciously experienced or expressed in overt action. This may mean a hidden inclination or potential for interest in homosexual relationships, which is either suppressed or not recognised, and which has not yet been explored “for real” or may never be explored in fact.

The term was originally proposed by Sigmund Freud. Some argue that the latent homosexuality is a potentially iatrogenic effect.

    Links to Homophobia

A theory that homophobia is a result of latent homosexuality was put forth in the late 20th century. A 1996 study conducted at the University of Georgia by Henry Adams, Lester Wright Jr., and Bethany Lohr indicates that a number of “homophobic” males exhibit latent homosexuality. The research was done on 64 heterosexual men, 35 of whom exhibited “homophobic” traits and 29 who did not. Three tests were conducted using penile plethysmography. While there was no difference in response when the men were exposed to heterosexual and lesbian pornography, there was a major difference in response when the men were exposed to male homosexual pornography.

The researchers reported that 24% of the non-”homophobic” men showed some degree of tumescence in response to the male homosexual video, compared to 54% of the subjects who scored high on the “homophobia scale”. In addition, 66% of the nonhomophobic group showed no significant increases in tumescence after this video, but only 20% of the “homophobic” men failed to display any arousal. Additionally, when the participants rated their degree of sexual arousal later, the “homophobic” men significantly underestimated their degree of arousal by the male homosexual video.

Still, researchers disagree about whether the “homophobic” males were stimulated by genuine latent homosexuality or negative emotions such as anxiety.

    Links to Environment

Others have suggested that latent homosexuality is a result of one’s environment. Living in a homophobic culture, not being exposed to homosexuality, and being surrounded by members of both genders may encourage latent homosexuality. Conversely, exposure to a single-gender environment, such as a single-sex school, prison, or military service, could bring one’s latent homosexuality to the surface.

  91. Gay Bear says:

#97 — “Faggotry” — aren’t you one for words! “Sick homos” — another brilliant statement. “Sickness” — sorry, not according to the psychiatric community, or gay people in general who are a great bunch of people who give much to this society. “Retarded concept,” “sick assholes,” “legitimize sick homos” — all such “priceless” comments. Yet you don’t have a latent homosexuality problem? Take a long, hard look at yourself, fool, you have got one MAJOR problem with homosexuality, and it has nothing to do with tired buzz words like “agenda” (by the way, there is no such thing as a homosexual agenda — but you keep trotting out that lame phrase and you’ll see how much traction you get using it, which will be none at all). The problem with homosexuality, or “faggotry” as you label it, is that you are a latent homosexual. Sorry, jerk, but that’s the way it is. The more you show up here, fangs bared, spewing your bigotry and hate, the more everyone here will be convinced that you are nothing more than a latent homosexual who hates other gay people who live their lives out and proud and without the overwhelming shame you experience every day. Keep on ranting, and show us all how knee deep in “faggotry” you really are. We’ve all already gotten the message. But feel free to drive it on home if you really must. You’re latent. You’re homosexual. You’re tired. Go away.

  94. Gay Bear says:

104 — Ah yes, the old “hang you on a fence in Wyoming” line. Heard that one before when you were posting as Chris (or was it Reddog). How proud you must be to make light of the murder of an innocent person at the hands of a couple of no-count thugs — people like yourself. Yes, hit the nail on the head with you a long while back (as did many others, I might add). We all get it. You’ve proven who and what you are to us. There is no reasoning with you and your ilk. The good news is that your thinking and your type of people are on the way out. Progress and time are beautiful things. Soon both will put an end to you. And I say for me and every gay person on this planet, good riddance to you.

  100. christian guy says:

The Real Reason Straight Americans can’t accept Gay Americans

Many people quote the Bible as their reason for gay bias, denying us respect, acceptance and basic human rights, going against what America AND Jesus Christ is all about. But the funny thing is, I believe that the reason they cannot accept us is because of a very primitive, childish and emotional reaction that has nothing to do with the Bible.

On really a basic, primal level, homophobic heterosexual men can’t accept gay men because we are not like them. And the root of the issue is the childhood ridicule and scorn taught by society against any perceived weakness and femininity.

  101. Preston Bunker says:

Very sad that the ‘Braves’ were not…brave. The label of intolerant seems to apply to everyone except gays…of course they sure seem intolerant of anyone who disagrees with their viewpoints. Calling people biggots etc…lovely indeed.

A decision or choice doesn’t make a minority, birth makes one. How you can compare sexual orientation to race is a very large stretch…where does it stop?
Focus on the family has done immense good for many hundreds of thousands of people…by standing for the principles they believe in…they haven’t changed since 1977 when founded…just the political climate has. I hope the Braves reconsider and don’t let this very loud minority bully the good folks at Focus.

  102. Tim Davis says:

While I don’t agree with everything they do, Focus on the Family is a light in this dark world. God’s word, the bible, states that homosexuality is wrong. Focus only follows that. If you people don’t like that, cut that part out of your bible, while you’re at it cut out the part about heaven and eternal life too. It’s a package deal.

Definition of bigot from Merriam/Webster Dictioinary:

a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

    Jesus says “Judge Not”
That means Christians are NOT ALLOWED to judge ANYONE>
That is God’s business not anyone elses.
If you do decide to judge anyone else…be prepared to get it all back in return one hundred fold
“Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye.” – Matthew 7:1-5
