ThinkFast: August 2, 2006

“President Jalal Talabani said Wednesday that Iraqi forces will take over security of all provinces in the country by the end of the year. Currently U.S. forces handle security in 17 of Iraq’s 18 provinces.”

U.S. troops are fighting to turn around the “insurgent stronghold” in Ramadi. A sign in the U.S. headquarters advises soldiers to “be polite, be professional, and have a plan to kill everyone you meet.”

Pro-science moderates “are virtually guaranteed to win back” a majority on the Kansas Board of Education after yesterday’s election, which saw two far-right conservatives defeated in the Republican primary.

As expected, President Bush on Monday nominated anti-regulatory zealot Susan Dudley to head the obscure but “super-powerful” Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. Clean Air Watch said the move was “like naming Mel Gibson as a special Mideast Peace Envoy.”

“The last few weeks have essentially transformed Lebanese politics,” the New York Times finds, “marginalizing…democratic forces” and “instead empowering President Émil Lahoud, a staunch ally of Syria,” and “above all” Hezbollah-aligned Parliament speaker Nabih Berri.

Some officials on the 9/11 Commission have concluded that the Pentagon’s initial claims that it scrambled jets to apprehend United Flight 93 were “part of a deliberate effort to mislead the commission” about its bungled response to the attacks, and that the false statements may have “violated the law.”

Unions representing thousands of EPA scientists say the environmental agency is “bending to political pressure and ignoring sound science in allowing a group of toxic chemicals to be used in agricultural pesticides.” The deadline for the EPA to approve the use of the chemicals is tomorrow.

And finally: A sure-fire plan to help resolve the abortion debate. “As a shock tactic, a national group that opposes abortion plans to fly a billboard-size picture of an aborted fetus over Cleveland beginning Monday.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Flying billboards is what I would expect the right to do to try to convince people to not get abortions… that is FAR better than trying to dictate to people how they are going to live their lives through the force of the law of the land. Using the Peoples on laws and government against them for religious goals is unAmerican.. but trying to convince them through speaking their feelings on the subject is how christians are supposed to get stuff done.

So a timetable is set. Let’s see if the US will “allow” the Iraqi government to govern its own by leaving the country by then. With one last glance over the shoulder at the oil wells.

  3. Steve says:

Flying bilboards of aborted fetuses? God forbid they attempt to increase the standard of living and provide all Americans health care; two proven ways to decrease abortions.

    #1,
Just imagine what the right would do if someone flew a billboard picture of mutilated bodies of Iraqis and dead US soldiers over Topeka.

A few years too late, but better late than never.

Hopefully, this will open the door to some honest investigations of 9/1, but I won’t hold my breath.

Gee…that sound an awful lot like a ‘timetable’ to me…

But we gotta stay around to ensure the oil is well protected. As well as continued building of bases for our next spreading of Demolition, err I mean Democracy.

  8. Democratic Soldier says:

#1 – To be “fair and balanced” they should include a picture of and AIDS infected crack whore, and title the bilboard:
Allow abortion or force an unwanted pregnancy?

  9. Rebel With A Cause says:

The Iraqi’s can set all the timetables they want, but, ouralcoholic prez has his own timetable, and as long as the pukes are in charge, it will be followed.

So the Pentagon lied. This was at the onset of Bushco and set the standard for all time to follow.

Sanitarium is behind about 15 points in the polls, however, the Secretary of State of Penn. will certify him as the winner. See how easy it is in puke controlled states? The same thing will happen in Ohio and Florida. You read it here first.

The Bush admin. is still rooting for Israel to kill as many Lebanese civilians as it possibly can before agreeing to a cease-fire. A great man and a great leader, our prez.

  10. Skeptic says:

The most effective way to prevent abortions is to have a stable, prosperous economy. The U.S. has fewer abortions and more live births during an economic upswing. I don’t have a good source for this, I read it in the paper a couple of years ago. However this is not something Republicans can control.

  11. Zooey says:

A sure-fire plan to help resolve the abortion debate. “As a shock tactic, a national group that opposes abortion plans to fly a billboard-size picture of an aborted fetus over Cleveland beginning Monday.”

Those idiots apparently are not concerned about scaring actual children with that crap.

Hand it over, get the hell out.

And that makes the right absolutely furious…

  14. Evil Spaniard says:

#6 President Jalal Talabani said Wednesday that Iraqi forces will take over security of all provinces in the country by the end of the year.

But the question, will the USA military give the bases to Iraq? Or the plan is simply that only the Iraqis get blown, while the USA military and ambassador keeps the control of the country? Sorry, but I don’t see a step toward Iraq’s freedom, but a step to the USA control of the country go undercover.

  16. Skeptic says:

    Zooey;
I was trying to imply that the Republicans could not give us a good economy, but actually I am not sure that they are trying. They have done nothing to make life easier for the reproductive age working class. Look at lack of health care and stagnant wages and paucity of jobs with liveable wages.

  17. Zooey says:

    Skeptic,

They’re only interested in a good economy for themselves. They don’t really care about the working class, or even abortion. I think they try to control all the “nasty & dirty” stuff on the one hand, so we won’t notice their other hand stealing us blind.

  18. Marie says:

So why did the 9/11 commission stop at “mulling” criminal charges?
They are mostly lawyers – surely a criminal case doesn’t stop with the thought “we think these guys are lying,” but we won’t press the issue.

  19. TripMaster Monkey says:

So why did the 9/11 commission stop at “mulling” criminal charges?

Agreed. There is ample evidence of wrongdoing here…ample enough that if the 9/11 Commission fails to file criminal charges, they ought to be brough up on charges themselves for assisting in the colossal obstruction of justice that was the 9/11 ‘investigation’.

  20. Erroll says:

“A sign in the U.S. headquarters advises soldiers ‘to be polite, be professional, and have a plan to kill everyone you meet.’ ” After reading this, is there any wonder that the Iraqis hate the Americans and want them out of their country as soon as possible?

    Osama Is Emmanuel Goldstein?
    August 2nd, 2006
    by Jay Randal

“And in the general hardening of outlook that set in … practices which had been long abandoned: imprisonment without trial, the use of war prisoners as slaves, public executions, torture to extract confessions … and the deportation of whole populations – not only became common again, but were tolerated and even defended by people who considered themselves enlightened and progressive.” ( George Orwell’s 1984.)

In the futuristic prophetic book 1984, the main villian of Oceania is named Emmanuel Goldstein, who must be hated daily by the brain-washed population, so his face is shown on the telescreens for the “Two Minutes Hate.”

Whenever his face is shown everybody curses him in enraged fury, because he is the bogeyman and terrorist that “Big Brother” claims as the mastermind behind every act of warfare on Oceania, so he is condemned.

Goldstein in reality is used as a bogus propaganda tool, to fool the common “proles” into complete submission to the totalitarian government, so is Osama bin Laden a bogeyman fooling us into supporting Bush Regime?

( Jay Randal, political activist and writer in Stone Mountain, Georgia.)
