You forgot to include "unknown knowns". That's when they know that Iraq had WMDs, because they've got the receipts to prove it, but forgot to mention that most of them were deployed during the war against Iran, or destroyed during the first Gulf war (after getting the green light from Glaspie), or deteriorated during the decade of sanctions against Iraq. All of the above might establish a (barely) credible pretext for the occupation of Iraq, in order to reduce the production and consumption of petroleum and forestall an economic meltdown generated by the approach of peak oil. Of course, Israel is the wild card, with all those nukes aimed at all those oilfields, which provides it with a preferential right to exist

Phillyfan, I get the feeling I'm probably the only one in here who actually has been in Iraq in the winter. Trust me, it gets cold and wet AND insurgent activity goes down.

If progressives want to be taken seriously, part of the solution might be to actually know what you're talking about. One can make many, many, many criticisms of this administration's prosecution of the war. I'd be the first to make them.

But you can't come off as an incompetent, which is exactly what Think Progress did with this selection.

It averages a whopping frigid 50 degrees F in the winter months in Iraq. Hardly a detriment for suicide bombers and planting IEDs. This is for all the asshats who agree w/ this moron.

they are going to keep giving us these bonehead answers because they are never challenged by anyone but us. The MSM cowers in their presence. Do you really think he was bothered by what Hillary had to say? She asked the right questions but where was her backup? These criminals know they can do and say any kind of mumbo jumbo w/o needing to worry. It will be forgotten about tommorrow when the senate brings up whether public urination should be written as a crime against nature. You are witnessing what happens when the president is allowed to spy on anyone he chooses. All the dissenters are smacked down. Do you really think honest true blooded Americans would allow this type of incompetence to prolificate. Everyone is scared to death of these nazis. It is just about over for this country. If they are allowed to manipulate this next election, if the neo con nazis maintain power in both houses , you will truly know that a dictatorship has taken over. This election should not even be close, only 20% of Americans approve of this Congress. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the elections are fixed. How in the hell did this incompetent fool win by a majority in the last election. Everything he touches turns to shit and he still managed to get elected. And whats up w/ not even challenging these results. Spying thats whats up. They got something on every dissenter.By the way what do we do except sit on our asses in front of our pc's bitching about everything

He admits he doesn't know but that has no affect on the claims he will actually make. The facts are irrelevant.

There are plenty of legitimate criticisms of Rumsfield to be made, but this is not one of them. It is a fact of military history that all fighting practiced by every military group in the world has been and is effected by weather conditions, such that each group's fighting behavior falls into predictable patterns. This is undeniable and it is directly relevant (and absolutely necessary) in assessing the success or failure of any given military policy. In the context of this meeting, Rumsfield was countering that laying the recently increasing violence at the feet of policy is overly simplistic, given the rather large number of factors that cannot be controlled by even a perfect policy. Again, I have plenty of criticisms of the "Iraq plan" and our lack of effectiveness there, but yanking this comment out of context and deliberately misunderstanding it is purely masturbatory. It shows a primadonna-ish demand for perfection, rather than a real interest in finding out wherein Rumsfield is actually wrong.

Most of the comments I've read on here are overly simplistic and self-inflating. Bank on it: there isn't a human being on this planet, no matter how much you dislike him, who can be reduced from his complexity to a convenient, easily dismissable simplicity.

He is essentially correct.

The seasonal nature of warfare in Afghanistan is a result of it having exceptionally harsh winters, the fighters being mostly foot bound (tough to move in snow drifts) and it being a tribal society with an agricultural econmony which has historically viewed summer as the time for fighting. Planting and harvesting cause decreases in military activity in the spring and fall and in most of the country the winter weather at those altitudes is harsher than you can imagine.

Fanantical are not, the Taliban clothed in light cotton clothing and shod in flip flops prefer to winter over in Pakistan.
