in Iraq, Britain’s ambassador to Baghdad William Patey said in a confidential memo leaked to the media. “Even the lowered expectation of President Bush for Iraq — a government that can sustain itself, defend itself and govern itself and is an ally in the war on terror — must remain in doubt.”
Yes, but civil war is NOT likely, because it has already happened!
August 3rd, 2006 at 11:42 amJust wait.
August 3rd, 2006 at 11:44 amWhat should we wait for Ben?
August 3rd, 2006 at 11:46 amThose gosh darn british memos… too bad they are so innacurate and unreliable… I mean the last one we read about said Bush had wanted to invade IRaq all along and the whole WMD thing was just a pretext.. how absurd is that notion?
August 3rd, 2006 at 11:49 amoh and on a serious note, I love the line: “the next six month are crucial”.. hahahaah my god how many times have we heard that one? is that the standard line when people feel like theres actually some realistic possibility of things changing and need to set some arbitrary “not too long, not too short” amount of time for things to magically turn around? sorry all you “6 monthers” it WILL be civil war. period. iraq will break into multiple parts. the only real question now is how badly such breakup and violence will destabilize the surrounding region.
August 3rd, 2006 at 11:53 amBen has faith. He doesnt need to know what he is waiting for… he and all his kind just could NOT be wrong about all this… I mean they DID beat their chests and shout “We are #1!” over and over so they cant be wrong can they? So just wait.. they will be vindicated some how… some how….
August 3rd, 2006 at 11:53 amCertainly civil war is occurring in that war-torn country, with the United States caught in the middle, like ducks in a shooting gallery. Will the Democrats finally decide to nominate an anti-war candidate in 2008 or will they pretend, like John Kerry did in 2004, that the bloodshed that is going on in Iraq does not dxist and that this country should continue to stay the course?
August 3rd, 2006 at 11:54 am“Civil war is a more likely outcome.” Hmmmmm, you think? Gee, I recall hearing that, oh, say, Feb ‘O3
August 3rd, 2006 at 11:55 amPesky British memos indeed. Why should we care what the Brits think, after all, they’re just part of “old Europe.”
August 3rd, 2006 at 12:04 pmI’d like to see a “then and now” of Conservative predictions. What were there thoughts on this in 03,04 and 05 and what are they saying now.
August 3rd, 2006 at 12:09 pmI think Ben is waiting for Godot
August 3rd, 2006 at 12:19 pmThe people that have authorized the use of white phosphorus, cluster bombs, incindiary bombs, depleted uranium, microwave and lasar weapons as well as the Nazi creation of “shock and awe” and torture are war criminals. It goes straight up the chain from various divisions of the defense department, to Rumsfeld, Gonzalez, Powell, Ashcroft, Addinton, Cheney and Bush. These people involved have no regard for extreme pain and suffering of the masses a “collateral” damage (killing of innocents) is far greater than the original group of terrorists. Now every male that can hold a gun in Iraq is considered a target. The people that are responsible should be routed out and put on trial. These same people have destroyed the constitution and bill of rights for their own purposes. Senators and Congressmen that have voted to eliminate American’s freedoms and liberties should be identified and impeached. They have turned this country into the Secret State of America and are as transparent in their decision making as a tarpit.
August 3rd, 2006 at 12:20 pmI find British memos more believeable because of the accent.
August 3rd, 2006 at 12:23 pmJust saw V for Vendetta last night. FOOD for thought!
August 3rd, 2006 at 12:25 pmWhat a bunch of sorry, ass-clowns running the show, and destroying the World. Stupid, unaware fools.
WE THE PEOPLE must send a message this November. I don’t care who you like, VOTE EVERY INCUMBENT OUT. PERIOD.
Maybe WE can convince the World that we DON’T agree with our current leaders, and save some face before it’s too late.
August 3rd, 2006 at 12:26 pmErroll,
In fairness, I don’t recall John Kerry saying anything like that. I did get the sense that Kerry felt the US needed to “fix” Iraq and thought he’d be better at it than Bush. I think the beginning of the problem was the Republicans shameless trumpeting of “Patriotism” and the Democrats fearful cowering in response. I remember when Oliver North tried it during the Iran/Contral hearings and was eloquently scolded by George Mitchell, saying that dissent was not unpatriotic, but rather our patriotic duty. Mitchell gained a lot of respect in my eyes that day.
The Republicans raise a illegitimate argument when they cry that Democrats have no plan to fix things. Democrats are not privy to the necessary information in order to formulate a plan; that information has been systematically withheld or distorted from the beginning. I think Democrats (or Progressives) have a different philosophy and approach, and would tackle the situation in a different way. But I don’t think it is reasonable to expect them to have a detailed plan when they’ve been excluded from the whole picture. It is especially unreasonable given that the administration has not itself delinieated a plan and only repeats, “stay the course”. I think Kerry’s mistake was to fall for that argument and tried his best to present a plan and his credentials to carry it out.
August 3rd, 2006 at 12:27 pmI see that Emperor Bush has finally turned the corner of is own making. He’s pushed a cautiously peaceful Middle East into all out raging hot war.
Heck of a job, Bushy.
Doesn’t someone have photos of Gannon giving the Emperor a blowjob? It seems that’s the only thing that counts when it comes to impeaching a President.
August 3rd, 2006 at 12:31 pm#18 You prove my point. Ignorance and hatred, GET THE HELL OUT OF MY COUNTRY, FASCIST PIG.

Kerry and the Democrats knew Iraq was a waste. And I’m glad Kerry lost. If Kerry can’t defeat Swiftboaters he certainly can’t lead a nation.
Kerry’s being swiftboated and all he and Edwards can say is “Cheney’s daughter is a lesbo”?
What a natural born loser.
August 3rd, 2006 at 12:41 pmPoor ignorant kkkonservatives. They don’t know when their own head is up their ass from the dark of night. Liberalism had nothing to do with the present situation. The ReichWingNuts completely and independently responsible for the current state of affairs.
What’s interesting is that Rethuglican NeoKons try to “tell” us what we think. Yet the polls show something completely different.
Check out the top page polls at http://www.pollingreport.com/ Where’s the support for the ReichWingNut agenda? It looks like it’s long gone!
Oh, and if WingNuts need a clue about what’s really going on in Iraq, here’s one simple source: http://www.riverbendblog.blogspot.com/
…I woke up this morning to scenes of carnage and destruction on the television and for the briefest of moments, I thought it was footage of Iraq. It took me a few seconds to realize it was actually Qana in Lebanon. The latest village to see Israeli air strikes. The images were beyond gruesome- body parts and corpses being hauled out from under tons of debris. Wailing relatives and friends, searching for loved ones… So far, according to humanitarian organizations, 34 were children. They killed them while they were sleeping inside their bomb shelters- much like the Amriya Shelter massacre in 1991…
I’m so frustrated I can’t think straight. I’m full of rage against Israel, the US, Britain, Iran and most of Europe. The world is going to go to hell for standing by and allowing the massacre of innocents. For God’s sake, 34 children???…
And the world wonders how ‘terrorists’ are created! A 15-year-old Lebanese girl lost five of her siblings and her parents and home in the Qana bombing… Ehud Olmert might as well kill her now because if he thinks she’s going to grow up with anything but hate in her heart towards him and everything he represents, then he’s delusional.
Is this whole debacle the fine line between terrorism and protecting ones nation?…
I strongly encourage WingNuts to consider the implications of this. What is being played out is the Konservative Agenda. And as I already pointed out, there is little support for it. The blood from pursuing this Agenda are on the NeoKons and their Konservative friends.

I love people who post near incoherant rants, where they tell us that we are unhinged. IheartLiberals, I think you need to up the does on your anti-depressants, and let the nurses know you need to get outside more.
August 3rd, 2006 at 12:46 pmThe memo stresses that “the next six months are crucial,” and urges the government to ensure that Iraqi forces are brought into the effort as British troops “can’t confront the militias alone.”
“The next six months”. Where have I heard this meme before? Oh yeah! It’s favorite prediction.
Between the “next six months”, and all the corners turned you’d think Iraq would be a stable country by now.
Another interesting aspect of the memo is the clear admission that British troops do not have the numbers to fight the militias.
August 3rd, 2006 at 12:54 pmSorry for the formating mistake above.
I meant to say: “It’s Tom Friedman’sfavorite prediction.”
August 3rd, 2006 at 12:56 pm# 18. poor ignorant nazi’s. all they got is yelling “terrorist”. if you want to talk about lack of substance, lets think about what Bush would be rambling about all these years if even moderate government competence had prevented 9-11. and thanks for that wonderful paragraph completely devoid of any substantiative criticism. so your saying iraq ISNT devolving into civil war? thats what this thread is about, you know. its not about how cool liberals are. its about how everything your heroes had been saying about iraq has either been at best, grossy innacurate, at worst, blatant lies. you saying maybe there wasnt a reason your buddy rummy sold evil ol saddam those chemical weapons years ago, and gave him maps of where to use them?
seriously, put down the webTv, and go back to copulating with your hillbilly relatives, which is how most of the “good ol boys” of america came about…

Actually what we progressives do not understand is, with the home schoolin they get..the reichwingnut…heard about that civil war…It was where the godless liberals from the godless northern states in their BLUE uniforms invaded the south to desecrate their god fearing religious ways..and force godless liberalism on the heros of the cunfederacy..which wore grey uniforms..
And the godless liberals have been doing this for over 150 years until dumbya cane to SAVE them……
So when they look at Faux news and nobody is wearing BLUE or Grey then it can’t be no real civil war cause they ain’t got the right uniforms for it……so we have to excuse them for their ignorance ..again
