Geraldo attacks Stewart, Colbert for bad taste.

Responding to a Bill O’Reilly rant, Geraldo Rivera said, “You know, Comedy Central is now a big hit, Stewart and the Colbert guy. … They make a living putting on video of old ladies slipping on ice and people laughing. That’s their life. That’s their life. They exist in a small little place where they count for nothing.”

A small, little place… kind of like the space between Geraldo’s ears, only big enough for idiotic ,redundant soundbites to popup now and again.

  2. Badmoodman says:

Gorrendo Revolver, loved your truthinesss on the Al Capone vault fiasco! And say, could you tell me some of the latest troop movements?

  3. Krazny says:

I think Riveria has some audience envy.

  5. Vance says:

Shame on Stewart and Colbert for not showing troop movement and locations like Mr.AssStash did awhile back.

  6. Badmoodman says:

Guest Geraldo Rivera later suggested that O’Reilly refer to “that schmuck from MSNBC,” apparently MSNBC host Keith Olbermann; Rivera added that the “schmuck from MSNBC” is a “lowlife.” – - Poor Gorrendo. The buzz surrounding him now approximates that of a depressed bee in a Tupperware container. If you can’t build yourself up, then tear down someone else. Sad little mustachioed man.

  7. Del Capslock says:

Wow. He sounds bitter AND deperate! Well done, Stewart and Colbert!

  8. Mash says:

How funny. When so-called “serious jounalists” feel the need to attack two comedians who have fake news shows, it shows you how threatened these guys are feeling. Maybe it is because Fox News also peddles fake news and they feel that the fake news coming from Comedy Central is too much a threat to their fake news monopoly.

  9. dlet says:

“They exist in a small little place where they count for nothing.”

I wonder if that small little place is smaller than Al Capone’s vault. I’m sure it has more stuff in it at least.

  10. Darwin's Dagger says:

And yet, Stewart and Colbert have more credibilty than Geraldo ever dreamed of having. We laugh with them at the jokes. We laugh at Geraldo because he is a joke.

  16. NoMoreBush says:

That Geraldo Rivera can even speak to “bad taste” is shocking and proves that ANYONE can make it here. Maybe, Geraldo should go to the archives and look at some of those tasteful shows he did in the late 80’s, early 90’s. Now that was some thought provoking and stellar journalism.

  17. Sharon Cox says:

Geraldo? Is that the guy that did some kinda new’s a long time ago.? Guess he doesn’t want any one to forget who he is…Who is he.? I forgot………Blessings

Just for the record, I know how its spelled. Too many “T”s in Technotaoist. Or it could be misread as Tech Not a Oist, which means nothing but would probably confuse someone critiqing it anyway… so I guess it doesn’t really matter how I spell it… :)

    BillO is still a schmuck…

  27. exley says:

I am not a super-big Geraldo fan, and I find Stewart and Colbert to be very funny, but the fact is that Rivera’s work as a reporter at WABC helped bring about much-needed reforms in the care and treatment of mental health patients:

“In 1971, Geraldo Rivera brought the horrors of institutional existence into our living rooms with his Willowbrook expose, forever changing the role of the state run institutional system. Rivera’s expose and book on Willowbrook titled, “A Report on How It Is and Why It Doesn’t Have to Be That Way,” was the catalyst that brought about the class action lawsuit primarily responsible for changing this archaic system, New York State Association for Retarded Children, et. al. and Parisi, et. al. v. Rockefeller.

The Willowbrook case led New York State to adopt sweeping change. Moreover, it became popular opinion that these deplorable conditions were unacceptable for people in state-run institutions, regardless of mental disability diagnosis.”

New York State Mental Health Association

That’s a substantial achievement. Besides being funny for a half-hour every night, what signficant contribution have Stewart and Colbert made to society?

  28. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Reply to beemer:

Did anybody ask Geraldo Capone if his mustache tickled Rupert Murdoch while he suckled at the Fox News teat?

Gaah….thanks for that visual, beemer, now I have a vision of a squealing Geraldo fighing O’Reilly, Hannity, Hume, Gibson, and that other guy (can’t remember his name…that bow-tie-wearing cretin) for access to the thin rancid milk dribbling out of Murdoch’s swollen teats.

God, am I going to have nightmares tonight…

  29. ohdave says:

Geraldo, you’re going to regret that. I have a feeling he will be the target of some pointed satire in the very near future.

  30. Rexroth's Daughter says:

I really thought that Geraldo Rivera was driving a taxi now. But instead I find him pronouncing the demise of two of the most popular shows on tv.
You know, … who cares ????

  31. Jeffrey Stewart says:

Firs, Jerry (his first name when he started in broadcasting) Rivera mischaracterizes what Mr. Stewart and Mr. Colbert do. Given his description it is still better than the way Jerry made his name: sticking microphones and cameras in the faces of emotionally distressed people and asking, “How do you feel?”

  32. Krazny says:

Besides being funny for a half-hour every night, what signficant contribution have Stewart and Colbert made to society?

    Comment by exley — August 3, 2006 @ 4:59 pm

Being funny for a half our everynight is a pretty good contribution. I realize they get paid for what they do, but I think they bring a good laugh to those who need it. As for you assesment of Geraldo, early in his career he did some good things, however since the Al Capones vault disaster, he has been sliding into obscurity.

  33. ohdave says:

Exley, by exposing the rank hypocrisy and stupidity of the current leadership in Washington, they are doing a great service to society.

    God Bless Stewart and Colbert.

here are two of the biggest hate-mongering, envious, beastly characters ever to disturb the air-waves. incredible!

  36. exley says:

Krazny, I don’t disagree that being funny and providing amusement is a valuable contribution (especially in these difficult times). I guess I was just trying to educate some of the younger posters here that Geraldo Rivera has in fact done some important and valuable work as a reporter that had led to improved lives for some of society’s most vulnerable citizens.

    exley, you ignorant slut.

are you norwegian, by any chance? that is the classic norwegian straw-man argument you make. first no one has argued ‘a significant contribution’ by those two men. second, if you gave your question more than a minute’s thought, you might realize that they have indeed contributed to the public and to the history of broadcasting with significantly more impact than jerry rivers could ever imagine to attain.

has jerry rivers had any show on as long as stewart? no.

has jerry rivers ever spoken at the annual presidential/press? no.

you right-wing, bill o’reilly fallufah sucking, brain-dead, coulter panty-sniffing, milkin ass-lickers aren’t worth a pile of what i left in my toilet bowl this morning.

  44. exley says:

#39, I agree with that. And I am not knocking Colbert or Stewart. I mean, Colbert’s interview with Eleanor Holmes Norton was one the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time. I am just letting people know about some of Rivera’s accomplishments.

By the way, have Stewart or Colbert gone abroad to entertain the troops in Afghanistan or Iraq? I don’t know the answer to that. I hope they have. If not, it is really not fair to equate them with Bob Hope, who made many sacrifices and gave up many holidays with his family to entertain service men and women.

  45. jimb says:

Guest Geraldo Rivera later suggested that O’Reilly refer to “that schmuck from MSNBC,” apparently MSNBC host Keith Olbermann

Keith is going to have fun with this tonight. I can’t wait.

  46. Nicho (the other one) says:

    Let me get this straight…

Geraldo, a man who once made a living of publishing the private issues of those stupid enough to sign a waiver, inciting brawls on his show which provided enough ratings that he wore medical devices for weeks afterwards, is accusing Stewart and Colbert’s political satire shows as “count[ing] for nothing”?

Geraldo, let me know when you find something in Al Capone’s vault.

  47. jimb says:

When did they show videos of old ladies falling??? I’ve never seen those episodes.

I think that was the night after the one where they strangled puppies with their bare hands.

  48. Jackie says:

At lease Stewart and Colbert are not being paid to lie but Geraldo is spreading the GOP propaganda. Anyone remember why Geraldo fell from grace. He was on top of the entertainment world and then he hit rock bottom. Notice the company he keeps now I guess that’s how he want to build back his substandard position.

  49. madashell says:

I’ll ask this again – anyone seen V for Vendetta yet??? Great little parable about where we are headed….

  50. justanobserver says:

It’s comedy. If Geraldo and O’Rielly feel the need to attack comedy then good for them. It will only add to the enjoyment of watching Colbert and Stewart. There is no need to defend them. In fact I’m sure that Geraldo’s latest attempt to be in the spotlight will be used by the Daily show and the Colbert Report. At least these shows are honest that they are COMEDY. Unlike Billy O’s slander hour.

  51. exley says:

    # 47 “I think that was the night after the one where they strangled puppies with their bare hands.”

    That was pretty good!

  52. Krazny says:

Don’t forget Stewart on Crossfire. Tucker got all mad at him for not asking Kerry the “hard questions” and stewart said “well if comedy central is what you want to hold up the standards of journalism too”. or something along those lines.

He also called tucker a dick which was even funnier.

  53. Mikey says:

Geraldo? Is he still on TV? Stewart and Colbert shows may be comedy, but they point out how funny reality is. Some of their funniest stuff (especially on the Daily Show) are real clips of politicians contradicting themselves or otherwise being idiots. Comedy, yes, but also real (sometimes). Geraldo is jealous that his ratings aren’t as good.

  54. GSD says:

I’ll never forget when Geraldo Rivera goaded Roy Innis in attacking Re. Al Sharpton. Now that was high minded and intellectual televison at its acme.

Fat Roger Ailes double chin must be quivering and sweaty from all the bad news.

  59. Martin says:

    to exley:

I appreciate the civility in your tone. That being said, what Geraldo did 35 years ago has little bearing on the whore he has become. Whatever youthful idealism this twerp once had has long since vanished. Geraldo Rivera is a whore, plain and simple. At his core there is no there there. Should this nation return to the sanity of mature discourse, a respect for science and a commitment to bettering the lives of its poorest citizens, all progressive goals, then Geraldo will no doubt flip his stance and proclaim that he has always been a liberal Democrat.

If Geraldo has the balls (doubtful) to read what’s being said about him, he should hear that we wish the asses he’s so lavishly kissed to soon induce visual proof by cankering shut his claptrap mouth.

  60. Badmoodman says:

Exley: By the way, have Stewart or Colbert gone abroad to entertain the troops in Afghanistan or Iraq? … If not, it is really not fair to equate them with Bob Hope. – - Gosh, ever hear of the “internets” or maybe you call them “tubes.” Ever hear of that newfangled technology called a “podcast”? Have any idea how MANY soldiers got them there iPods in Iraq? Bob Hope would have been digitized too if it was invented then. How about Kathy Griffin who’s taken a show to many parts of Iraq?

Martin….Thank you. I appreciate your civility as well. Like I said, I am not a big Geraldo fan. And I do think Colbert and Stewart are funny (I have additional respect for Stewart because he is a huge Mets fan). However, I don’t think it is correct to label Geraldo a conservative. He was virulently opposed to the Clinton impeachment and throughout those events lambasted the Congressional Republicans and Ken Starr nightly on his CNBC program. He was also very critical of the Supreme Court’s decision in Bush v. Gore. I just think a lot of people here are automatically labeling him a conservative simply because he now works at Fox.

Too bad Stewert and Colbert don’t show videos of neo-nazi skinheads and nation of islam types duking it out in front of a live studio audience. That would win Geraldo’s respect.

  68. unbelievable says:

#27- exley- I agree that the Willowbrook story was an amazingly powerful piece of journalistic excellence, and showed how important telling the truth is, no matter how ugly. but since then, Geraldo has steadily eroded his own credibility, by his own actions. He was asked to leave Afghanistan, after drawing troop movments in the sand, on camera. Not the best idea. He redeemed himself for a brief moment, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. His honest reaction to what he was witnessing was very powerful and moving. He has the ability to regain his reputation, by doing the hard work required. But instead, he chooses to go on Bill’s show, and badmouth people, who’s success he is envious of. He has a LONG way to go.

believe me I have LOTS more where that came from and I (thankfully) don’t live within 100 miles of a subway bathroom

Sorry, I didn’t think outhouses got that much traffic. Got some pretty clever writers out there, do ya?

so you just go ahead frequenting those places looking for more liberal wisdom and maybe you’ll get lucky and run into (literally) George Miachael and have some of that good ol liberal lovin..idiot.

You’re a bitter, bitter…. I was going to say bitter “man”, but I think I figured out where all the bitterness is coming from. What was it a biking accident?

  102. THE REAL progressaurus rex says:

the response to this from tds and colbert is going to be a hoot.

talk about leaving yourself open. just when i thought geraldo couldn’t get any more stupid than he already is…

  103. progressaurus rex says:

oh, i guess i can go back to being the normal p-rex again.

did anybody notice the actual truth in headlines from msn:
“Senate rejects GOP estate tax cut”

i almost choked on my after-work beer (it’s friday already here in australia…)! they actually avoided an opportunity to say “senate rejects minimum wage hike”.

a perfect chance to take a stab at dems yet again, and they pass on it. they must be slipping.

  104. End * on * End - » Happy Fun News Summary says:

[...] Geraldo, watch out for that chair! Oops, I forgot, you’re legit now [...]

  105. onthefence says:

Maybe this was mentioned before but do you guys remember during Katrina when G.R. supposedly rescued this 90 year old woman, only the shot they got of him walking her to the ambulance, so they made the old lady do the frog march again to get a Faux worthy shot, this woman had been stranded for days.

This alone should speak to Geraldo’s integrity.

  106. Yachts and Lattes says:

Since more people watch the Daily Show than Bill O’Reilly, I’m guessing their corner of the world is even smaller?

  107. Arriba says:

Carl Hiaasen killed off Geraldo in an embarassing way, under a VERY thinly disguised fictional name in a novel back in 1989. Now THAT was funny. A lot funnier than anything Geraldo himself ever did, intentionally or not. IMO, Geraldo hasn’t contributed ANYTHING worthwhile in decades. At least Stewart and Colbert are funny. And Hiaasen is a SCREAM!!

  108. Arne Langsetmo says:

    #83 Jason:

Why is there so much anti-semitism on the right? Defend Israel Jews, but at the same time practically call for the extermination of the “hollywood Jews.” WTF is that?

Ummm, because they’e self-hating Jews and are thus a danger to themselves, and so to protect them from this danger we graciously have to ‘eliminate’ these dangers to them for them.

Couple of quotes come to mind:

“We had to destroy the village in order to save it.”

“‘Shut up’, he explained” — Ring Lardner

    Cheers,

  109. qkslvrwolf says:

Let me get this straight…GERALDO is accusing someone else of not mattering?

    WTF?

What strange delusion does this guy have?

  110. RUCerious says:

Boy, sound to me like Geraldo and Billy are talking about their own shows, projecting a little, perhaps, maybe? I get my comic relief three nights a week from Stewart and Colbert!

  111. Jane E. Schneider says:

#63, Exley, are you a Mets fan, too? I’m glad to hear that you have additional respect for Jon Stewart being a Mets fan. During a recent game, one of the announcers was interviewing him in the stands, did you catch that?

  112. newbroom says:

Geraldo is saying that Bu$h/Cheney and the Republican party are ‘as’ little old ladies slipping on the ice’….cause they’re the folks who are most in need of parody.

I think this is a sexist and contemptuous slander of little old ladies, on or off the ice.

  113. bb says:

I’m waiting on Stewart or Colbert to nail him or just shut him up.
Fact is young viewers which is 18-26 turn to anderson cooper for real news and stewart/colbert for fun. This people at fox…thier viewers are 55 and above!

  114. exley says:

#112, Jane…Sorry I didn’t see your posting earlier. Yep, I am a HUGE Mets fan. And yes, I did see Stewart’s interview in the stands. I also liked his pre-season commercials for the Mets (”This line-up is so good, it’s scary.”)

    LET’S GO METS!

  115. hominid mike says:

when the HELL did they ever show a clip of an old lady slipping on ice? i think geraldo should die!

hes insulting john stewart and stephen colbert like he has an IMPORTANT career.

  116. russell golkow says:

I live in NYC. The Fox studios on 6th Avenue have a large window, through which the public can watch the live broadcasts, including Geraldo’s show – he’s on the air, late at night, and that is the loneliest spot on any sidewalk in NYC

  117. Radracer says:

33 and 34 summarize it pretty well. 85, you rock, heh. You too 111! 49, yeah but the true libertarian answer to the “problem” was watered down when compared to the book. The editors apparently thought it’d be too much, plus the media hides anything libertarian (the party the govt. doesn’t want you to know about). The book’s better.
50 it’s comedy sure but its IMPORTANT satire. 68 and 70 got it right. Some genius figured out that the 5 major companies that own 95% of the media (Orwellrollsinhisgrave.com) won’t allow the truth out about any major news event (such as 2 Presidential candidates being arrested on the eve of the 04’ elections: http://www.e-thepeople.org/article/35752/) and created a couple of brilliant satire shows that actually tell us the real truths about how we should read most of today’s news (with a slight left-wing bent). The REAL NEWS is on these 2 shows and that’s why they are so popular, because people know it! People know most of the media lies and (aside from Democracy Now on LINK TV) there is no other media I trust as much as these two beyond maybe the BBC.
Pathetic little Jerry Rivers is part of the propaganda machine, pity him; he’s a “has-been” (or maybe a “never-was”).
Since Colbert and the Daily show emphasize what’s really going on in the world (as opposed to all the propaganda/lies that are the daily media we all watch on TV everyday) has anyone thought that most of the jerks on Digg who are anti-Colbert Report, like I Hate-this or I Hate-that (appropriately named) might well be either govt operatives or just clueless Conservatives? So why should we care what they say? Screw ‘em! Colbert and Stewart ROCK and pronounce in the only HONEST media form (satire) the corporate owned media will allow, the TRUTH about what is going on in our world! The truth is not something the govt. wants getting out on the airwaves. That’s why professional propagandists like Hanty, Combs and O’Lielly types say they should be removed from the air because they are a “danger” to the youth of America; WOW just like terrorists! I guess Congress will have the Patriot Act declare satire as terrorism soon! Reminds me of when Bill Maher got removed from cable for being honest. Watch out Steven and John!

  118. Jack Killian says:

Geraldo your old and can’t handle the truth that john and steve dish out every single night on comedy central making the news both unbiased and enjoyable. so just please shut the hell up, stick to your retarded news segment that nobody i know actually watches. actually
i would like to see him on the colbert report ….yay get him steve, nail’m!

  119. George W. Bush says:

Geraldo, it’s time to shut the hell up.

The number of people who watch the Daily Show is greater than the number of people who have even heard of you. You don’t live in a small little place where you count for nothing; you live in the same world as us; we just don’t give a shit about what you have to say.

  120. George W. Bush says:

They got him back on the Daily Show. Once again, they didn’t have to make a joke, they just played the clip and the joke made itself.

  121. Think Progress » Geraldo wants to fight Keith Olbermann. says:

[...] During a radio appearance, Fox News contributor Geraldo Rivera called MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann “a coward — specifically a ‘[female part of the anatomy] who wouldn’t walk across the street against the red light.’ He then said he was ready to fight him, saying: ‘I would make a pizza out of him.‘” Geraldo has previously attacked Olbermann as a “lowlife” and a “schmuck,” and said Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert “exist in a small little place where they count for nothing.”  6:36 pm | Comment (0) [...]

  122. Aanya says:

    Geraldo, go the hell away!
