FACT CHECK: O’Reilly Claims Conservatives Don’t Call Liberals ‘Racists’ Or ‘Bigots’
Yesterday on Fox News, Bill O’Reilly claimed that he tried to do some “fair and balanced” research, but couldn’t find anyone on the right who calls liberals “haters” — bigots, racists, anti-Semites, or homophobes. (He ignored Michelle Malkin when she admitted that in her columns, she takes “liberal bigots to task for their hypocrisy.”) Watch it:
We did some quick research for O’Reilly and found examples:

O’Reilly also dismissed calling liberals “insane,” “harpies,” “witches” or “retarded” as “just the usual partisan rhetoric.”

O’REILLY: I had Leonard Pitts in – he’s a columnist from the “Miami Herald” in some of the teases. Now, Pitts’ column today didn’t call anybody a racist. He was writing about Mel Gibson. Waling that line. Walking that line. Now, Michelle, have you ever done that in your column? Because we have researched right wing columnists and I’m going to get to that in a minute. But have you ever labeled anybody a racist, a homophobe or anything like that?
MALKIN: Well I call people what they are in my column. And occasionally that it does meaning taking liberal bigots to task for their hypocrisy. I was on your show back in the fall when I was on my book tour talking about “Unhinged” which has a whole chapter on unhinged liberal bigots who on the one hand talk about compassion an tolerance and on the other hand use the most vile epithets against their opponents.
And I think that there is a place for labeling it when it is .
O’REILLY: But aren’t they hypocrites rather than bigots? See, here is what I am objecting to. We had John Podhoretz, who is a columnist send – he is a conservative guy. He says that Al Gore is insane. OK. That is just the usual partisan rhetoric. Ann Coulter calls people witches, harpies, all kinds — retarded. Name calling is one thing but labeling a person a bigot, all right, saying they are anti-Semitic or homophobic, that elevates it up into here is a hater. That person is a hater. These columnists don’t know these people. They don’t know me. They don’t know Mel Gibson. They don’t know anybody. To do that, I think, is grossly irresponsible.
MALKIN: Well, yes, especially when, and of course, it is all they have. And I have been on the receiving end on that ever since I began my career as a public commentator when all they have to say in response to your meticulous arguments, for example, that lax immigration enforcement endangers us. The first thing that a lot of these leftists do is call you a xenophobe and immigrant barber. You hate Hispanics. If you talk about the war on terror, if you talk about jihadist infiltration, you are an Islamophobe. And it goes on and on. And this is a crude tool in the intellectual toolshed of the American left. It is all they have. It is old, it’s rusty and ineffective.
O’REILLY: I don’t know whether the right does it. We really try to research this fair and balanced. We didn’t come up with anybody on the right who did…
MALKIN: Well, that pretty much answers the question.
O’REILLY: Other than the name calling. There is a lot of name calling on the right.

O’Reilly said “We didn’t come up with anybody on the right who did”. One quote would have been enough to show that someone on the right does. I hope there is no need to explain why.
As to your assertion about the “left”, that is a lame attempt to change the subject. When someone on the other side of the political spectrum makes a similar claim, feel free to prove them wrong.
In the meantime, this is a thread about O’Reilly’s shoddy “research”.

Republicans mocked liberal calls of racism for years by reducing it to simply “playing the race card”. Remember that talking point ye of the far right?
But now that the Republicans have some token ethnic support, suddenly the evil specter of racism is all too real. So real that any criticism of Condi Rice or Michelle Malkin or Senate candidate Michael Steele is now chalked-up to “racist liberals”.
So, what is it? Is racism no longer an issue or is it only an issue when “the race card” can be used by Republicans?

I’m intrigued by the bizarre attention so many conservative websites and bloggers are paying to Lanny Davis’s silly op-ed in today’s Wall Street Journal. See here.
Here’s an excerpt from the Davis piece:
My brief and unhappy experience with the hate and vitriol of bloggers on the liberal side of the aisle comes from the last several months I spent campaigning for a longtime friend, Joe Lieberman.
This kind of scary hatred, my dad used to tell me, comes only from the right wing—in his day from people such as the late Sen. Joseph McCarthy, with his tirades against “communists and their fellow travelers.” The word “McCarthyism” became a red flag for liberals, signifying the far right’s fascistic tactics of labeling anyone a “communist” or “socialist” who favored an active federal government to help the middle class and the poor, and to level the playing field.
I came to believe that we liberals couldn’t possibly be so intolerant and hateful, because our ideology was famous for ACLU-type commitments to free speech, dissent and, especially, tolerance for those who differed with us. And in recent years—with the deadly combination of sanctimony and vitriol displayed by the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and Michael Savage—I held on to the view that the left was inherently more tolerant and less hateful than the right.
Now, in the closing days of the Lieberman primary campaign, I have reluctantly concluded that I was wrong. The far right does not have a monopoly on bigotry and hatred and sanctimony.
Davis smears conservatives generally as intolerant and hateful, using his false characterization as a basis to compare loathsome attacks by liberal bloggers against his friend, Joe Lieberman. He slimes Rush and Ann (Savage, of course, is loathsome) with bloggers who write such things as this:
“Ned Lamont and his supporters need to [g]et real busy. Ned needs to beat Lieberman to a pulp in the debate and define what it means to be an AMerican who is NOT beholden to the Israeli Lobby” (by “rim,” posted on Huffington Post, July 6, 2006).
As an aside, no one has been more steadfast and thoughtful in his support of Israel than Rush (indeed, no one has been more intelligent in their exposition of conservatism than Rush). Moreover, George Bush — the Republican president Lanny Davis and his liberal ilk undermine on a daily basis — has been spectacular in his defense of Israel, unlike so many Davis’s fellow Democrats. And while Davis correctly condemns the poison flowing from his own side, this is a serious problem for the Left, not the Right. Our nuts are on the fringes; his nuts run the DNC, their PACs, and their think-tanks.
Davis was a mouthpiece for one of the most corrupt president’s in history. More to the point, Bill Clinton and his wife were specialists at using slurs and personal attacks against their opponents (including numerous women). Davis defended all of it.
We are nothing like the Left.

Answer me this, who are the guys who think if gay marrage is available to the gays, that the whole world will fall apart?…or we will all instantly turn gay? The truth is Republicans are terrified of Liberalism. They aquate us with being the same as terrorists, Republicans are incapible of debate, they simply call us all sorts of names and treat us in a way, that if they where to treat BLACKS in the same way they treat Liberals, it would all become very clear, Republicans are bigots.
Republicans fit the definition, plain and simple. They are against Liberals, they think liberals are the boogy-man that the “Main Stream Media”, schools, everything Liberals it taking over their little uneducated world.
These people, the Republicans, would have nothing if they did not get repremanded by us first. They use everything WE have ACURATELY and CORRECTLY labled them, and PROJECTED it back onto us, without any understanding of the words they say. You see, they mimic our behavor because they are jealous of us, they are Psychopaths, they don’t have the mental ablity we have. Everything the Republicans say to us is repeated from words they have heard against THEM. They are mimics. When they use our words against us, it is terrible because it devalues the words when those words to not apply, they have no backing no real substance. They are mimics that’s what they do, Psychopaths have this way of acting, please, please read up on Psychopathic Personality Disorder.
It’s like talking to a child, the child does something wrong, you say “hey, don’t do that that’s wrong”
Child responds: “no, your wrong!” (it makes no sense)
perhaps the child starts a war, you say “hey, now you just being stupid”
child responds: “your stupid!”
It’s a game to Republicans, they are not even close to the same level as we, adults are. They just can understand that there needs to be meaning behind words in order for it to make sense. Republicans are idiots, they are bigots, against gays, against liberals…they won’t even argue with you, the just say “Your stupid!” and that’s the end of it, there is no debate. Republicans want to be slave masters that is thier motivation, Liberals want to give people rights, Republicans want to take them away, or keep them away from you. Anti-Abortion is just a way to control bodies, you become a slave master if you can control millions of womens bodys. That’s not your body! For God’s sake! Republicans want to control YOUR LIFE! No abortion, no gay marrage. It frightens them because they are not in control of thier own lives and they can’t be in control of yours.

“Liberals want power”
“Liberals only have hate with no reason”
“Liberals want to control your lives”
NONE of this is TRUE! You know it, anyone who has an IQ should know it. But if this is not Liberal ideas, who are they talking about?
They are talking about themselves!
They are openly admitting what they feel!
This behavior is called Psychological Projection, it is very common for Psychopaths to do this! You can look it up and read all about these two things, it is a subconscience admission of guilt by the person who is unable to consciencely deal with the negitive emotions they experience and apply them to others, without even understanding that they are doing it!
We have to identify these people as who they are!
Just look at that dumb Psychopathic suffering girl in the video, do you get the sense that she is nice and tolarant, or a hate machine who attacks liberals? It’s obvoious to those of us who are smart. Liberals have to realise, should realise, that they are so far above Republicans they can just fly over them. Liberals can call conservatives a thousand four-letter words in liberal blogs all over the country. Liberals are allowed to practive intollerance, while using terms like the radical right and radical religious right and neo-cons, but conservatives aren’t supposed to label those on the far left appropriately? I’m more than happy to tell the truth and call liberals ‘bigots.’
I have written frequently about the intolerance and anti-Christian, anti-Jewish bigotry we see on the extreme left. It is a growing phenomenon with very scary consequences. The term ‘compassionate conservative’ will become less of a joke, and more of a maxim in the near future, as liberals show more intolerance towards those of faith.

August 9th, 2006 at 4:46 amI know that I’ve got bigotries; that I lump huge numbers of people into a catagory I call “right wing” and assume I know how they think. I don’t think it’s a healthy habit. I used to describe myself as moderate to liberal, and was sort of irritated that “liberal” was treated as if it was a dirty word. I mean, it’s taboo to put down groups of people for what they choose to believe in. We don’t say “those stupid Episcopalians” or “Some Roman Catholic guy was on TV spouting B.S.” Still, in the 80’s it became acceptable to to put down liberals. Who started doing it? It was NOT the liberals who were trying to instill fear of the liberals and walling off liberals from everybody else to use as scapegoats. Hatred of liberals becoming acceptable, and the use of “liberal” as a put down was learned behavior. It was annoying but tolerated, because to start using “conservative” as an insult is stooping to the same behavior.
In the last 6 years, we’ve seen what happens when the crowd who thinks it’s ok to but down liberals gets into power. I’ve gotten so mad that now I don’t care about stooping to the level of name calling. Does it help discourse? Nope, but neither does “tree-hugging appeaser”. We can be as mean as conservatives. It doesn’t help, but neither does passive acceptance of our being labeled. “They started it” is a lousy defense, but I think that in this case, it’s true. Why shouldn’t the liberals be as mean as conservatives have been? We’ve seen what conservative and “I don’t care what you think”-sm has gotten us.
I could be wrong about this, and it sounds like playing the victim, is there any word used more often as a derogatory term in America than “liberal”?
