Increasing sectarian violence in Iraq

Increasing sectarian violence in Iraq

has led Shiite leaders to push a “radical plan to partition the country as a way of separating the warring sects. Some Iraqis are even talking about dividing the capital, with the Tigris River as a kind of Berlin Wall.”

Brings a shit load of tears to my eyes.

Hmmm. Nobody could have predicted this….right Rummy?

  8. Steve53 says:

Relatively soon, there may no longer be an “Iraq”.

Just as many have predicted;others have hoped,a few have planned.

  9. Kermit the Freedom Frog says:

These three new countries will be allies in the war on terror, give hope to moderates throughout the region, and dishearten our enemies.

…and freedom will spread like a fire throughout the land. We’ll burn the villages with our freedom fire. A burning city on a hill, for all to see.

  10. Krazny says:

Any shiite partition of the country will ally closely with both syria, and Iran. The Kurdish part will most likely be invaded by turkey, since Turkey has zero interest in a free kurdistan. The Sunni part, well Saddam was Sunni draw you own conclusions.

  11. DT says:

Want to bet this will be called success by the Washington gang of four?

  12. Badmoodman says:

Maybe we can take over a province and lure all the insurgents to it. Ya know, call it “Bringitonistan.”

    A stunningly accurate metaphor.A horrible,sad situation.

  14. Clyde the Ripper says:

Do you suppose when they divide the country the Northerns will be called Yankees and the Southerners will be called Rebels? That would give Bushco some credibility in interfering in another Country’s civil war. But whose side will Bushco be on? The side with Daddy’s and Uncle Dick’s oil of course.

  15. Gerald Gibson says:

My #1 question now is…. we want our people out of there… we also do not want that chaos to make very bad things happen that are out of our control…. cant SOMEBODY… present a plan and drill it over and over on TV about how we get out of there AND spin the situation to our favor? Some way to point to the coming withdrawl and say look arabs… this is going to get real bad for YOU soon… it WILL spread to Qatar and Saudi Arabia and Syria and Iran…. why not get together and solve this issue and maybe even spin that into an over all solution for Israel and the Palastinians as well?

Or are we just blindly going to withdrawl and watch the whole thing explode? If the republicans are wrong… which I believe they are then just leaving is only half the solution… THEN what? Americans Left and Right need to get their heads together and figure out a solution that is not just more stupid political games…

  16. Rexroth's Daughter says:

Bushits will be claiming victory when the world ends. Bushits do not have contructive goals, just destructive goals… so as things fall apart, they rejoice. They will deliver one big “I told you so”, no matter what happens.
Bushits still think things are just ducky in Iraq anyway. Fox tells them so. And all the people in Lebanon are terrorists… Fox tells them so. And Global Warming is still a myth, and there were WMD’s in Iraq, and the GOP is going to sweep the elections, Fox tells them so.
Fox is their worst enemy because it keeps them ignorant but the Bushits love it.
Worship of your own oppressor is a symptom of long term slavery.

Freedom on the march in Iraq–your tax dollars at work.

  18. DallasNE says:

What about dividing up the oil revenue. Without that the Sunni insurgency will continue the battle. I gues “clear, hold, build” is now dead as a policy.

  19. Solitaire says:

Iraq IS going to split. There IS a civil war in progress, they WILL have their country partitioned and the so-called Democracy that Bush has foist upon them hasn’t a chance of changing that. I suspect that there will be a slaughter of the Sunni, also. It would be nice to think that the very act of withdrawal will bring them together, but NOTHING will bring them together, and NOTHING can be accomplished by our staying there. Sure. It would have been nice if our warmongering had resulted in something positive for them. It would have been nice if we hadn’t invaded their country. It would have been nice but it’s not reality.
“Civil war this, civil war that….”.
We suffer from incompetent, arrogant leadership, my dears. We have been thown into a pit of excrement, and there’s no making lemonade out of that. The only way out is OUT!

  20. PLC (PatrioticLiberalChristian) says:

Can we still have a “War in Iraq” if there is no Iraq? What a mess BushCo has made! IMO, this cannot be “fixed” by any outside agent (i.e. the U.S.) and, therefore, those who opposed this adventure should not feel any obligation to try to come up with a solution. Whatever resolution occurs internally is a consequence of BushCo’s policy of preemption, to be judged by history and IMO, by God. The world will have to deal with those consequences as they happen, not stop them.

  22. Juan C says:

Civil war, american soldiers mutilated, thousands of civilians exiled, thousands of civilians dead…whatever. Stay the course means getting all the oil we can. Arabs are savages and barbarians, while we are educated, civilized and, Id dare say, flematic plunderers of their wealth.

  23. Kermit the Freedom Frog says:

Don’t forget the entire intellectual class eradicated by extremists in Iraq.

    Bush never liked intellectuals anyway.

  24. george w says:

Rexroth’s Daughter has key point #1 here. The right thing is to get our troops out of Iraq, but make no mistake about it: it will be bad politically for the Democrats either way. If the country doesn’t descend into chaos, Bush can claim it was all part of his master plan. If it DOES descend into chaos, Bush can blame the ‘but-n-runners’ for ‘forcing his hand’ in pulling the troops out too early.

But it doesn’t matter. At this point, we’ve got to get our kids out of the line of fire, no matter what the consequences are.

Solitaire has key point #2. Iraq will split eventually. We should have recognized that years ago and used our troops to help midwife three new nations onto the world stage. I don’t find the arguments against a full partition to be convincing. If they’re going to have to ‘fight it out’ anyway to get rid of the bad blood…since they’re participating in ethnic cleansing ANYWAY, why not do it in aid of a real long term solution?

  25. george w says:

‘but-n-runners’ works too, but I meant to type ‘cut-n-runners’. sorry.

  26. Marie says:

Ah yes! Mission accomplished – Democracy in Iraq. Thank you GW!
It has been all so worth it. What more do you have in store for the middle east?
BTW – if Iraq is divided, it will be very difficult to divide the country equally regarding the economy. This civil war could be a very bloody, very long winner take all proposition with a large portion of the country dominated in every way by the other.

Oh boy look at what the Bush Regime has done to Iraq > turned it into a sewer of violence and is causing Iraq to break apart into religious tribal groups!

  31. Pagan American says:

“cant SOMEBODY… present a plan and drill it over and over on TV about how we get out of there AND spin the situation to our favor?”

Truthfully, I don’t think anyone can. We broke it and we shouldn’t have. The powers in play will fight it out until an new equilibrium happens. That will look like three Iraqs with three Saddam Hussein type thugs keeping everyone in line through brutality. Like the Who said, “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss”. It is sad. I just see more and more violence. We shouldn’t have done it. I hate to be pessimistic, but I don’t see a singular solution. We should just get the f#@k out as soon as possible. We don’t understand tribal religious cultures involved. And once we are out, we need to work our butts off to try to bring peace in the region through diplomacy, reason, and compromise.

A couple of thoughts about pulling the troops out:
    1. I agree that it may hurt the Democrats but it is the ethical thing to do. Right on #25.
    2. Bush isn’t going to pull the troops out until it gets really really bad, so bad that even we lazy American can’t avoid looking at what a disaster it is. When that happens Bush and Co will have been so badly damaged that the Repugs will be out of power for a long time. The problem is, we will still have to fix the problems left behind. Bush has made the world a lot more dangerous a place. More war, more terrorism, and more poverty. This war of choice has set the world back a full generation. We are simply going to have to deal with the effects of it, including more terrorism on US soil more than likely.
    3. It just sucks that our troops have been used this way and are sitting in that hell-hole trying to not get blown up. Support the Troop, Bring them Home!!
    4. Bush and Co just care about oil money and arms dealing.
    5. I hope we get to impeach Bush and Cheney. I believe that if a thorough investigation was done into the lead up to this war, we could arrest Bush and Co for treason.

  32. RUCerious says:

This will be a nightmare, but it is probably the only solution now that Pandora’s box has been smashed to shit.
