1,855. Number of bodies that showed up at the Baghdad morgue in July, “a 16 percent rise from June and a 71 percent increase from January.”
The United Nations has stopped deliveries of aid to southern Lebanese villages “because of the danger on the roads” and because the “last bridge over the Litani River north of Tyre had been blown up.” The World Health Organization “warned that if fuel is not delivered soon, 60 percent of the hospitals in Lebanon will ‘simply cease to function.’”
The Bush administration has drafted amendments to a U.S. war crimes law “passed in the mid-1990s that criminalized violations of the Geneva Conventions.†The changes would mean interrogators would no longer face possible prosecution for committing “outrages upon [the] personal dignity†of prisoners. The plan has “provoked concern at the International Committee of the Red Cross.â€
The “ridiculous†trailer situation in Louisiana: “Nearly 1,200 St. Bernard Parish families are still waiting to get into trailers that sit locked on their home sites but need utilities or other services, and 400 families waiting for trailers have none at all.†“The families say countless calls to FEMA have failed to help.â€

And finally: The residents of Wawayanda, NY have seen the Godfather one too many times. After voting against the town’s master zoning plan, Councilwoman Gail Soro found a horse’s head floating in her pool.

Waywayanda is in New York, not New Jersey.

Ok, World Health Organization, this is a war (wrong: its a genocide) and people die in wars (wrong: they are killed).
August 9th, 2006 at 9:26 amWhat did we miss?
Well, Ned Lamont won the CT primary last night…but somehow I don’t think Think Progress’ continued stony silence on that topic is accidental.
Careful, guys….your agenda is showing.
August 9th, 2006 at 9:29 amOur American war criminals cannot be allowed to change the law retroactivly to avoid prosecution for those crimes.
They must be prosecuted or the United States can never hope to restore its honor, its standing in the world and the vision of justice and hope it once stood for.

August 9th, 2006 at 9:39 amBush gives God a bad name.
August 9th, 2006 at 9:46 amFrom José Steingler (translation by me) :}
7 fallacies from the ticket-master dominant speech:
1. Israel acts on self-defense
Wrong: Fron its creation, Israel wants to take over the waters of Litani river, located on the south of Lebanon. To acomplish that, he needs a puppet government in Beirut.
2. Israel is the only nation in the world that is wished to be erased from the map
Wrong: In more than a decade, groups in countries like East Timor, Kurdistan (?), Yugoslavia, Russia, Irak, Palestine, Afghanistan and Lebanon were erased into oblivion.
3. Lebanon was bombed because Hezbollah kidnapped two jewsih soldiers.
Wrong: The “road of Damascus” and plans from a “New Middle East” made by Washington and Tel Aviv were not thought last night and they seek the dominance of Beirut.
4. Dead people are the result of a game dictated from Iran and Syria.
Wrong: Dead people are the result of Israel bombings and the popular resistance led by Hezbollah, insurgent nationalist movement and lebanese political party.
5. The dream of “the Great Syria” is still going.
Wrong: the dream of people from Levante is surviving and coordinating fights against terrorism that Israel and US conducts globally and in the region.
6. The Hebrew State has less economic resources than its neighbors.
Wrong: Israel is in the 16th place of the richest countries in the world, with a higher rent per capita than the one of its neighbors, including Saudi Arabia. From 1949 to 1998 the aid received from US added up to $84 billions. Jets, choppers, fuel, GBU-28 bombs and other kind of weapons (some of them are experimental) are supplied by US. But the media dont talk about this. They talk about the rusty Katiushka missiles fired by Hezbollah.
7. The silence of the nations that allowed the arming of Hezbollah is the source of the conflict.
Wrong: the source of the “conflict” is the hypocresy, complicity and silence of the so called “free world”.

August 9th, 2006 at 9:56 amBut if I want to be a left wing troll on a right wing site, instead of watching right wing trolls on this site, how would I go about it and what are good places to post smart ass comments? There have been a couple of people who complain about lack of courtesy to rightwingers here and I want to see if a right wing site would be more civilized.
Well, until TP gets up a post about CT, crooksandliars.com and dailykos.com has good coverage.
Oh, and on the “our site was hacked” front, TPM Muckraker is reporting that contrary to previous charges, the Lieberman campaign says they pay more than $15 per month for the hosting of their Web site; this was mentioned yesterday as a possible cause for the crash, suggesting that the $15 didn’t buy them enough bandwidth.
As for the crashed web site, it is currently showing the same “UPDATE ON THE ATTACK ON THE LIEBERMAN CAMPAIGN WEBSITE” that was posted yesterday. In this message they ask Ned Lamont to denounce “this kind of dirty campaign trick and to demand whoever is responsible to cease and desist immediately.”
Ned’s campaign did this yesterday. They even posted a cached version of Joe’s site from Google on Ned’s site and offered to host his site on their own server. Reports indicate they got no response from Joe’s campaign.
August 9th, 2006 at 9:56 amJuan C:
A great post, and every item is true. Thank you.
I noted with alarm that TP did not even mention the Democrat race in CT. Puzzling to say the least.
Guess I will have to find myself a truly PROGRESSIVE site, since TP only gives lip-service to being progressive.
August 9th, 2006 at 9:57 amGood luck skeptic.
I don’t believe there are any rightwing sites that would allow a leftie to troll for long. They barely allow a leftie to post non-smartass remarks.
That a rightwing troll can get away with it here for so long is a testament to tolerance.
August 9th, 2006 at 10:03 amThe Israelis said they will blow up anything that moves including ambulances, women ,children, anything.. If I were Hezbollah I would put the captured soldiers in cars, have a martyr drive them around S.Lebanon, and let Israel kill their own since they love a canned turkey shoot so much.
August 9th, 2006 at 10:03 amThe Hizbollah attack loox a bit like a fake intervention and everybodys waitin for sth real to happen, whether it is syria or iran.
if lieberman and bush didnt waffle for 5 years about some terrorists running around in the wilderness or in the internet planning the obliteration of the world as well as calling Saddam responsible wed be in a diffrent situation today.
they let it run up, as well as well as the syrians and iranians let it run up. they waffled about the zionist threat without having any real input. the israelis pulled back in 2000.
Times up for imaginative politicians like lieberman. iraqs causing too much hatred.
August 9th, 2006 at 10:06 amThe lip-glossed idiot on MSNBC is REALLY trying to push the CT attorney general into saying one of Lamont’s supporters hacked Lieberman’s bargain basement website. Just gather the information ding dong, don’t try to steer it.

Just another example showing that whatever position Bush takes its the wrong one. He is not only destroying our economy and international financial standing but he has systematically made decisions that will hamper growth in areas that can help the economy.

August 9th, 2006 at 10:17 amWhat did we miss? Joe Lieberman got booted out of the Senate last night! And now, being the sore loser that he is, will run as an independent candidate, according to the Los Angeles times.
August 9th, 2006 at 10:17 amLebanon Prime Minister
“If Israel would realize that the peoples of the Middle East cannot be cowed into submission, that they aspire only to live in freedom and dignity, it could also be a stepping stone to a final solution of the wider Arab-Israeli conflict, which has plagued our region for 60 years,†the prime minister said.
A political solution, however, was unattainable, he added, “as long as Israel continues to occupy Arab land in Lebanon, Gaza, the West Bank and the Syrian Golan Heights and as long as it wages war on innocent people in Lebanon and Palestine.†Lebanon is hoping to amend a draft UN Security Council resolution agreed by the United States and France in an effort to secure an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the south of the country.
Siniora has expressed grave reservations with the draft resolution calling for a “full cessation†of fighting — but not for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon.-AFP

August 9th, 2006 at 10:24 amsure Joe is running as an independent, his masters Israel and the Repukes are counting on him and this is why the DINO’s must be pushed to extinction ……and also, thanx Joe for being our poster child for Dino’s making your kind all that much easier to identify by the gen. public in the future.
August 9th, 2006 at 10:24 amYou can not truly be anti-war if you support the U.S./Israeli War against Lebanon and Palestine. If you buy Rice’s “birth pangs” and “root cause” script, you buy into the rape and destruction and death in Lebanon and Palestine. Simple as that: you are either pro-peace or you are not.
August 9th, 2006 at 10:24 amMoments after congratulating Lamont, however, Lieberman announced his intention to abandon the Democratic party and run as an Independent in the general election. He spouted sad lines deploring partisan politics – one wonders how partisan politics are possible within a one-party primary – and sounded for all the world like the Republican-in-sheep’s-clothing the Left has been painting him as for several years now.
It was, in the end, a disgusting display.
The noise levels from the media’s chattering classes will spike for a few days with this result. The bloggers won the election for Lamont, they’ll say. The Loony Left is taking over the Democratic party, they’ll say. It was all about the war, they’ll say. As ever, the shortest distance between two points, as far as the news media is concerned, will be the dumbest, simplest answer possible.
It wasn’t about the war. Not all of it. Iraq, of course, was the central motivating factor. Connecticut is a predominantly Democratic state, and some 80% of Democrats strongly oppose the occupation. The news out of Iraq has been uniformly dismal, and it was impossible to forget the manner in which Lieberman had stapled himself to George W. Bush and his collapsing war plan. This was the Democratic Senator, recall, who warned us all that criticizing Bush was terribly dangerous to the country. He said that only a few months ago.

August 9th, 2006 at 10:52 amIt’s not a pretty sight. I once lived in Eastern Europe and they have a feral dog problem there too. It happened when the communist system broke down and people had to move from their nice homes in the country or ‘burbs and into the city to find work or live with family. They couldn’t tak etheir pets with them and thousands of dogs were left to roam freely. They multiplied and turned wild. They destroyed ecosystems and attacked people. They had to do the same thing. The problem was seriously bad and the solution not much better. They didn’t use clubs though. Iwas even asked Iif I could get the local government help in getting an “ambulance” through a grant so they could use it to go dog hunting. Didn’t do it…my mom would have disowned me.
You know how TP posts videos of the morning shows? This morning both Good Morning America and the Today Show spent all their time talking about Lieberman’s loss – and gave Lamont a passing acknowledgement, mentioned once.
Well, TP, your queen Hillary is NOW BACKING LAMONT. I think it is now okay to SAY SOMETHING.

So the Bush Administration wants to change the War Crimes Act ? That sounds like Cover Your Ass if I ever heard it.
August 9th, 2006 at 11:18 amThere’s a freeper post that claims that Miller is smarter then 50% of the electorate.
I’m just guessing that’s not the Fox New Half.
August 9th, 2006 at 11:21 amMiller is probably very smart, but he has no wisdom. He’s not funny because he fails to connect what he knows to what his audience knows in any meaningful fashion. He just comes across as someone trying to impress with obscure trivia. I just had a thought – wouldn’t Dennis Miller and Donald Rumsfeld make an good comedy team!
August 9th, 2006 at 11:25 amRumsfeld has horrible timing. It’s why his Vaudeville career never took off.

I’m sure Miller is smarter then one or two Fox watchers, but 50% of the electorate is stretching it for me.
August 9th, 2006 at 11:38 amLamont 52% – Lieberman 48%
That doesn’t bode well for Lamont in the general election – should be interesting.
August 9th, 2006 at 11:38 amHow many days left until Bush is out of office anyway? And we can start making things right again? Isn’t this action toward the War Crimes legislation essentially telling people, we signed the Geneva Conventions but not keeping to them will not be a punishable offense. Kind of like a presidential signing statement but on a planet-wide basis.
August 9th, 2006 at 11:39 amWhat the hell is going through the other 40%´s heads?
August 9th, 2006 at 11:39 amDo not go hog wild yet about Lamont beating Lieberman, because it appears the GOP plan is to cheat for Joe in November election! As for McKinney: Georgia has the notorious Diebold voting machines, which are easily hacked to destroy a politician, like Cynthia! Sen. Max Cleland was mysteriously defeated, in 2002, by Chambliss > most likely by Diebold vote fraud! The GOP and the DLC wanted McKinney gone, so I consider her defeat as suspicious!
August 9th, 2006 at 11:42 amWondered where the trolls were – JMH – he couldn’t even take his hometown!
Lamont won Hartford and Lieberman’s hometown of New Haven, which first elected Lieberman to the state Senate in 1970. 8/9
August 9th, 2006 at 11:43 amWhat the hell is going through the other 40%´s heads?
My guess? Air
August 9th, 2006 at 11:43 amA more realistic solution to the troop redeployment problem and the BP raping of the Alaska oil fields would be to redeploy the Army Corps of Engineers to Alaska to repair the pipe line and redirect it to the lower 48 instead of China and Japan. At the same time we redeploy the other troops to escort all the foreign oil company managers and non-US employees to Baghdad to replace out troops. Two birds-one stone!
August 9th, 2006 at 11:43 amClyde, we also need to redeploy the neo-con 36% to Iraq. They can stabalize the country. Heck we can make a mint selling them weapons.
August 9th, 2006 at 11:47 amhere we GO!
Top Democrats throw support to Lamont
Blame for Lieberman loss laid on Bush connection
WASHINGTON –
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., threw their support behind Connecticut upset winner Ned Lamont this morning.
Both senators issued a joint statement this morning on the Connecticut Senate race, saying, in part, “The Democratic voters of Connecticut have spoken and chosen Ned Lamont as their nominee. Both we and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) fully support Mr. Lamont’s candidacy. Congratulations to Ned on his victory and on a race well run.”
They laid the blame for incumbent Senator Joe Lieberman’s loss on his connection to President George W. Bush, saying, “Joe Lieberman has been an effective Democratic Senator for Connecticut and for America. But the perception was that he was too close to George Bush and this election was, in many respects, a referendum on the President more than anything else. The results bode well for Democratic victories in November and our efforts to take the country in a new direction.”
August 9th, 2006 at 11:48 amLamont 52% – Lieberman 48%
That doesn’t bode well for Lamont in the general election – should be interesting.
Comment by Jason M. Hendler
Can you even name the Republican challenger – doesn’t bode well for him if people can’t. Just because not all Democrats backed Lamont in the primary (duh, that’s why we have them), does not mean they won’t support him in the general election. Dream on there, Jason.
August 9th, 2006 at 11:49 amAt a time when the Democrats truly need to show party unity, it’s a horrible idea for party leaders to support Lieberman, no matter how much they may like him. The people of Connecticut have spoken. Sadly, Lieberman doesn’t care. Thankfully, Lamont will have more $$ available to him, since Lieberman won’t be able to dip into party coffers. So I’m glad there’s the supportive response from the leadership. The people of Connecticut deserve it, if you don’t think Lamont does.
August 9th, 2006 at 11:58 am60. The percentage of Americans opposed to the war in Iraq, “the highest number since polling on the subject began with the commencement of the war in March 2003.†57 percent supported a timetable for troop withdrawals from Iraq.
If the majority of Americans are opposed to the war and support a timetable for troop withdrawal, and if the extreme right hates people who are against the war and accuses them of wanting to “cut and run” or surrender, doesn’t that mean that the extreme right is against America?
Why do Republicans hate America? Why do Republicans want to see all of our troops wiped out in the Iraqi civil war? Why do Republicans love the terrorists? Republicans were happy when 9/11 happened. It gave them an excuse to take over the country and let Bush break laws and spy on us.
Now I know how Hannity does it. You just shut off the part of your brain that makes sense and let the words spew out.

Hey Jason, remember this?
Oh, Lieberman has pulled back within 6% in polls, and since polls ALWAYS heavily favor the liberal over reality, Joe Lieberman is going to win his primary, then Jane Harmon and Hill’reh will be able to slam cut and runners.

Mmmmm, I’ll bet those words are yummy. Leave the prognosticating to the professionals.

From the stastics I just looked up Americas Civil War resulted in about 3800 deaths per month.
At what level is it an “official” civil war? 1000? 1800? 4000?

I agree. It is really frustrating that people cannot simply make a principled stand. Everyone from republicans to democrats have been convinced that “playing the game” is the only way to win. Sometimes appealing to peoples righteousness and basic values works… that is what religions (when they are not busy killing people) use to win people over…

When the president decides, he’ll let us know.
August 9th, 2006 at 12:33 pmReally goes to prove the old adage “power corrupts…â€
Power is addictive, that’s why old Joe just can’t let go.
Hopefully the good folks of CT will exercise their good judgement in Nov and elect Ned.
Comment by RUCerious — August 9, 2006 @ 12:01 pm
Agreed. He can’t fathom losing the power he has attained. His running as an independant is a big “F-you” to the CT voters. Other than changing his party affiliation from “D” to “I”, what else is he going to change about himself that should appeal to the indy voters?
August 9th, 2006 at 12:36 pmAt what level is it an “official†civil war?
That’s what I’m wondering. If officials keep saying they’re close to civil war, there must be some watershed moment, something in their minds that would happen to qualify as “civil war.” But I’m glad there’s no way it’ll be a civil war until our administration is ready to say it is. Good for the Iraqis too.
August 9th, 2006 at 12:36 pmIn his “concession” speech, Lieberman stated that he cannot let the results of the election stand “for my party”. This is true only if he means his “party of one”, himself. Sometimes, a person’s real character comes out when they lose.
August 9th, 2006 at 12:41 pmGerald, what makes Lieberman’s a more principled stand than Lamont’s or the people of Connecticut?
August 9th, 2006 at 12:43 pmThe war is clearly THE major issue. Enough people thought it enough of an issue that it played a part in how they voted in Connecticut. They shouldn’t be blamed for that. They decided Lamont was a better person to represent their interests. “Principled stand” alone should not determine whether you keep your seat.
Principled stand
The principled stand I refer to us Iraq. Lamont has called out all supporters Democratic or Republican that are still trying to sell this war of choice.
Are the people that voted for Leiberman saying they SUPPORT the Iraq war of choice? Are they actually democrats? Are republicans allowed to vote for Leiberman in this primary? Who are these people that voted for Leiberman and what is thier stance on Iraq? Does 48% of the DEMOCRATS support the Iraq war of choice like Leiberman does? Do they support NOT getting Osama like Leiberman does? Do they support Saudi Arabia like Leiberman does? If only half the democrats are willing to stand up to the war mongers then how is this situation ever going to be resolved?
August 9th, 2006 at 12:54 pmIt would seem Lieberman’s party is the GOP… and by running Independent, he MUST know he won’t win, but he MIGHT pull off enough votes that would have gone to Lamont to skew the results toward the Republican candidate (whoever that is).
August 9th, 2006 at 12:58 pmYour initial post agreed with Jason. Then you seemed to support Lieberman’s “principled stand.” My apologies if I misunderstood. I my understand as to who voted for Lieberman are those who either support the war or support his voting record. Maybe they’re happy for the $$ he’s brought them, but I’d hope they’d balance that against the $$ this war & his support for it has cost them.

I saw that too. If he had any party loyalty he would accept the will of the voters in his party and not run as an independent. It’s all about Joe. He would rather a Republican win in Connecticut than have a Democrat other than himself win.
What a selfish Prick!!!
August 9th, 2006 at 1:03 pm(from the thread header) “The Bush administration has drafted amendments to a U.S. war crimes law …(etc.)”
The Constitution of the US: Article 1, Section 8: “…No bill of attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed”.
Article 6, Section 1: “This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding” (emphasis added).
Article 2, Section 1: “Before he enter on the execution of his office, he shall take the following oath or affirmation:–”I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” “
August 9th, 2006 at 1:15 pmLamont Defeated Lieberman, but Johnson Beat McKinney?
Wednesday 9th of August 2006
by Jay Randal
Sen. Lieberman was soundly defeated by Ned Lamont, but old Joe still refuses to admit he has been beaten, so he plans to run as an Independent in the November election!
Lamont trounced Lieberman by about a 4% margin of votes, but earlier polling of voters predicted more like a 10% win, so some suspicion lingers in election!
The press is reporting that Sen. Dodd intends to help Sen. Lieberman, which is an insult to CT Democrats, and a spit in the face to all progressives nationwide!
Rep. McKinney was beaten badly by Hank Johnson, but the infamous fraudulent Diebold voting machines still are used in Georgia, so her defeat is suspicious!
Johnson supposedly won by a vote margin over 18%, which is incredible since Hank has the charisma of a block of wood, and received covert funding from the GOP!
Cynthia was targeted for defeat, so did fraud occur?

August 9th, 2006 at 1:48 pmjay,
I think backing McKinney is a bad idea. Her actions after the incident with the police officer in the capitol building were not consistent with what I would like to see from our elected representatives. I think it is good she is being kicked out. It sends a message, that democrats don’t want those who disrespect our police officers, and other similar personnel. Besides Mckinney has been boot from congress before.
August 9th, 2006 at 2:12 pmPost 105 > McKinney is an anti-Iraq war Representative who has been replaced by a PRO war candidate > I know because I live in McKinney’s district! I expected her to have a close race with Johnson, if the contest was honest, but it’s obvious the Diebold machines were rigged for Hank! McKinney is gone NO matter what now, but do not gloat Krazny over her being replaced by a GOP agent! If the Democratic leadership cared about corruption, then Rep. William Jefferson, in Lousiana, who took bribes would be gone today, but no Democrat was put forward to take him out in a primary like they did to McKinney! Cynthia overreacted to a police officer grabbing her arm rudely, so she tapped him back on the chest > she apologized, but the officer never did so to her! Things are never reported properly in the press, and Rep. Nancy Pelosi & the GOP hate McKinney, so her political career has been terminated for the moment, but she tends to fight back, so she might win some other position someday!
August 9th, 2006 at 2:28 pmPlus Krazny > I am Caucasion, but several times in my life police officers have tried to abuse me unjustly > one of them I caused to have fired for his abuse! People tend to over respect the police until they get abused wrongly! We will have to differ on this, but I respect your opinion!
August 9th, 2006 at 2:31 pmSo Bush wants his war crimes to be legal? Well 1) The Constituion FORBIDS any such changes to laws to make past actions legal…. 2) Birds of a feather flock together….
Also, the putsch changed Hitler’s outlook on violent revolution to effect change. From then on he thought that, in order to win the German heart, he must do everything by the book, strictly legal, since Germans obviously frowned on not following the rules. He decided to maneuver it so that the German Volk would choose him as dictator. Later on, the German people were calling him “Adolf Legalité” or “Adolf the Legal One.”

August 10th, 2006 at 3:26 amThe War Crimes Act of 1996
“he Bush administration has drafted amendments to a U.S. war crimes law “passed in the mid-1990s that criminalized violations of the Geneva Conventions.â€
Actually, that understates the scope of the War Crimes Act of 1996, which includes the Hague Conventions as well as, arguably, the UN Chater (under the fourth bullet below):
(United States Code TITLE 18 , PART I) U.S.C 118 § 2441
§ 2441. War crimes (a) Offense.—
• “Whoever…commits a war crime…
shall be fined…or imprisoned for life
or any term of years, or both,
and if death results to the victim,
shall also be subject to the penalty of death.â€
(b) Circumstances.— …that the person committing such war crime …is a member of the Armed Forces of the United States or a national of the United States…
(c) Definition: … “war crime†means…
August 10th, 2006 at 4:30 am• …a grave breach in any of the international conventions signed at Geneva 12 August 1949…
• [acts] prohibited by Article 23, 25, 27, or 28 …of …the Hague Convention IV…, signed 18 October 1907;
• or any protocol … to which the United States is a party;
• …a violation of common Article 3 of the international conventions signed at Geneva, 12 August 1949…
