Did Rove reach out to Lieberman?

Did Rove reach out to Lieberman?

ABC News has updated its report from yesterday: “Dan Gerstein called from the Lieberman campaign to say the…account from another Lieberman adviser is not accurate. While confirming that Rove called Lieberman, he added: ‘Rove made a personal call, no help was offered, and we are not interested regardless.’ A senior White House official also says that the account is ‘not accurate.’”

  1. For Truth says:

Backtrack, hurry, before someone thinks Leiberman is getting endorsed by the neo-cons.

  2. Mary Poplins says:

Why would Rove help Lieberman? Lieberman is a trailor to the Dem party.

  3. . says:

A ‘reacharound’ sounds more like Rove.

  4. ShamRockNRoll says:

  5. Spudge_Boy says:

    Ha ha.

The NeoCons figured out that they were letting on to the fact that Leiberman is one of them by having so much support from the right wingers. Rove probably called MA, Jason and Randy this morning and told them to back off a little. I bet we see less trolls today.

  6. Jason M. Hendler says:

Yeah, that’s the ticket, it was a personal call….

  7. Wayne says:

    Rove never offered to help.
I can tell, because the neocons like o’Liely, Cheney, Snow, didnt come out and condem the voters in CT for not voting Joe-No-Mentum as the democratic contender for the Senate.

    oh… snap….

All I can say is the neocons backing Joe shows he was their boy. He was and is a traitor to the Democratic party and is really a republican. Hell, his only supporters are republicans at this point.

  8. Spudge_Boy says:

I wasn’t talking about you. God you got an ego don’t you?

  9. Jason M. Hendler says:

With a close election result and such a low turnout compared to the number of voters in a normal general election, there is NO way Lieberman will step aside. The efforts of dailyKermit will be undone, because recruiting relatively small numbers of independents to through the primary to Lamont won’t hold up in the general election. All this did was alert the moderates in the Democratic Party that they now have to deal with liberal bloggers.

  10. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

What? Did Rove whisper sweet nothings into Joe’s accepting demure ear?

  11. Wayne says:

Jason, didn’t you predict that Joe would beat Lamont in the primaryand another thread?
    hmmm, yeah you did…

Just admit you were wrong, and then go away.

  12. Tom3 says:

The Republicrooks are proven liars. If they say they’re not helping Loserwhore, you can bet they are.

  13. dlet says:

‘Rove made a personal call, no help was offered,

Yeah, he was calling to see how the weather was in CT how Joe was feeling. Rove only makes personal calls if it is to collect on the deal when you sold your soul. Joe made the wrong decision at the crossroads.

  14. G.W.SuperChrist says:

    Rove made a personal call?

WTF is rove making personal calls to a Democratic Senator for? Does anyone need more evidence that Liberman is way to close to the Republican leadership.

  15. The Truth about Think Progress says:

George Soros is a Hungarianimmigrant who came to the U.S. in 1956, at age 26, and made his fortuneas an international financier. His father, who was born into anOrthodox Jewish family, changed the family name from Schwartz to Sorosin 1936 – a move that enabled the Soros family to conceal its Jewishidentity and thus survive the Nazi Holocaust. In 1947 the familyemigrated from Hungary to England, where an event occurred that greatlyinfluenced the development of George’s personality and worldview. Hebroke his leg and was cared for by England’s National Health Service, free of charge, while the Jewish relief agencies of that era did notoffer him the help he believed they owed him. In that convergence ofevents was born Soros’ favorable opinion of Democratic Socialism, andhis negative view of many Jewish groups.

In1956 Soros started life in America with very little money but awell-developed knowledge of investing, thanks to his education at theLondon School of Economics and his experience working for a Londonstockbroker. He transformed his meager seed money into a huge fortuneby becoming one of the world’s leading hedge fund investors andcurrency traders. In 1969 he started his enormously successful QuantumFund, which, over the ensuing three decades, yielded its long-terminvestors a four thousand-fold increase on their initial 1969investments. During his career, Soros has orchestrated some extremelyrisky, ethically questionable deals. For instance, in a $10 billion1992 deal whose success was contingent upon the devaluation of theBritish Pound, he earned himself a $1 billion profit and the title,”the man who broke the Bank of England.” Over the years, he has amasseda personal fortune of some $7 billion.

In1979 Soros founded the Open Society Fund, and since then has created alarge network of foundations that give away hundreds of millions ofdollars each year, much of it to individuals and organizations thatshare and promote his left-wing philosophy. He believes that in orderto prevent right-wing fascism from overrunning the world, a strongleftist counterbalance is essential. Asserting that America needed “aregime change” to oust President Bush, Soros maintained that he wouldgladly have traded his entire fortune in exchange for a Bush defeat inthe 2004 election. In a November 2003 interview with the Washington Post’sLaura Blumenfeld, he stated that defeating President Bush in 2004 “isthe central focus of my life”. . . “a matter of life and death.””America under Bush,” he said, “is a danger to the world, and I’mwilling to put my money where my mouth is.” Claiming that “the Republican party has been captured by a bunch of extremists,” Sorosaccuses the Bush administration of following a “supremacist ideology”in whose rhetoric he claims to hear echoes from his childhood inoccupied Hungary. “When I hear Bush say, ‘You’re either with us oragainst us,’ ” he explains, “it reminds me of the Germans. It conjuresup memories of Nazi slogans on the walls, Der Feind Hort mit (The enemy is listening). My experiences under Nazi and Soviet rule have sensitized me.”

Sinceestablishing the Open Society Institute (OSI), Soros has given awaybillions of dollars, much of it to leftwing causes. He pledged to raise$75 million to defeat President Bush in the 2004 Presidential election, and personally donated nearly a third of that amount to anti-Bushgroups (see The Shadow Party). Soros recently gave $5 million to MoveOn.org, the group that has produced political ads likening Bush to Adolf Hitler. He also contributed $10 million to a Democratic Party 2004 get-out-the-vote initiative called America Coming Together, whose directors include representatives from the AFL-CIO, the Sierra Club, the Service Employees International Union, and the feminist political-action committee Emily’s List. He has further pledged $3 million to the Center for American Progress (CAP), a think-tank headed by former Clinton chief-of-staff John Podesta. CAP was formed in an effort to offset the influence of its conservative counterpart, the Heritage Foundation.

PBS broadcaster and Schumann Center for Media and Democracy president Bill Moyersis a trustee of the Open Society Institute’s board of directors. Thenetwork of Soros foundations – the most prominent of which is the OpenSociety Institute – supports a wide array of leftwing groups and causes.

Makes you wonder how anyone can read the posts here?

  20. Jason Lies says:

    Jason more lies?

“Tuesday’s primary turned out 43 percent of the state’s registered Democrats, a record for a statewide primary and even more so because the primary date fell in August under the state’s new elections calendar.”

So a record turnout is low? God pull your head out of fat ass, we’ll hear the pop from here. Dubya will probably think someone flew a 747 into his ranch.

  21. G.W.SuperChrist says:

All this did was alert the moderates in the Democratic Party that they now have to deal with liberal bloggers.

    Comment by Jason M. Hendler — August 10, 2006 @ 1:18 pm

    Who’s liberal?

WTF does it mean to be liberal?

Believing in the preservation of the Constitution? Standing up for free and Democratic elections? Getting away from dependency on foreign oil. Preserving our planet? Protecting much needed social programs for all Americans? Protecting America without destroying the rest of the world?

I always thought these were American values… if you think there liberal then I guess being a conservative means being against the constitution, democratic elections, energy independence, the environment, necessary social programs, and world peace.

If I were you – and I really wanted Leberman to win – I wouldn’t let the voters of Connecticut know that conservative hate America blogers like yourself support him.

  22. Solitaire says:

Loserman is already helping the GOP by splitting the party vote in November.
Shame on him. The party had it’s primary and he lost. He’s doing an end-run around the voters. A lack of respect for the election process worthy of a Republican.

  23. Jackie says:

Friends reach out to friends and the White House is a true friend to Joe Lieberman.
Yes Joe lied to his supporters and said he wasn’t a Bush supporter but notice no other official in an Aug. voteing go a call from the White House. The Kiss seen around the world was for loyality and support. I wonder what the 48 per cent who believed Lieberman think of him now that not only Tom DeLay comes to save him but the White House too.

  24. The Truth about Think Progress says:

For those of you who don’t know exactly who George Soros is or how he acquired his wealth, which supports this website, here it is:

Recent reports that mega-speculator George Soros is putting millions of dollars into funding think-tanks for the Democratic Party (Center for American Progress, and America Coming Together are two notable recipients), in a not-so-veiled effort to buy up the party, should raise the question: Just how does George Soros make his money? Years of investigation by LaRouche’s associates have answered that question in grisly detail: Soros’s money comes from impoverishment of the poor countries against whose currencies he speculates, and from deadly mind-destroying, terrorism-funding drugs.
We provide below a brief dossier on the low-lights of Soros’s history of theft and drug-promotion.* If, after reading this, you still want to take Soros’s money, at least have the decency to put the truth on your website: “I support drug-pushing. I’m pushing cocaine.”

    SOROS THE SPECULATOR:
Hungarian-born George Soros has been involved in financial speculation since the late 1960s, at which time he established the Quantum Fund, N.V., which manages the money of leading British and Swiss financiers, including the British Royal Household. The Quantum Fund is a private investment body called a hedge fund, which is headquartered in one of the leading centers of money-laundering internationally, the Netherland Antilles.
1990: With the opening of the East Bloc, Soros moves into Poland and Russia, with “advice” for devastating economic “shock therapy,” to be administered by his associate, economist Jeffrey Sachs. Sachs’ major claim to fame was his “rescue” of the Bolivian economy, by shutting down industry, and building up the cocaine trade.

1992: In this year, Soros’s speculation made big news, as he pulled off major attacks on the currencies of Great Britain and Italy, after which he bragged about earning more than $1 billion by hurting the currencies of these nations.

1993: U.S. Congressman Henry Gonzalez (D-Texas) called for an investigation of Soros’s manipulation of foreign exchange markets, including the possibility that the same measures used against Great Britain would be used against the United States.

1995: The manager of Soros’s Management Fund, through which he controls the Quantum Fund, took out an ad in the U.S. press, which urged the Congress (then controlled by Newt Gingrich), to proceed with its budget cuts, despite the possibility of a budget impasse (train wreck), because such austerity was absolutely required for the financial markets.

1995: The Italian courts, in response to a legal brief by associates of LaRouche in Italy, launched an investigation of Soros’s role in the speculative attack on the lira in 1992. The suit was dismissed in 1999.

1997: Soros’s hedge funds launch a speculative attack against the Thai baht, in a move widely credited with triggering the great Asian financial crisis of 1997, which destroyed the economies of Indonesia, and many other nations.

    SOROS THE DRUG PUSHER
1992-1994: Soros creates the Open Society Institute, and through that, both the Drug Policy Foundation and the Lindesmith Center, funneling more than $15 million for their activities, which focus heavily on changing drug laws, toward legalization.

1996: Ballot initiatives in favor of “medical marijuana” in California and Arizona, funded lavishly by Soros’s front groups, are passed. These were the front end of a campaign that encompassed up to 25 states.

1997: Soros’s Drug Policy Foundation pours money into a campaign to legalize euthanasia in Australia.
Meanwhile, in Ibero-America, Soros becomes a leading finacier of the drive to legalize cocaine. He bankrolls a meeting on Oct. 8-9, 1997 in the Colombian city of Medellin, for the purpose of pushing drug legalization, at the same time that Human Rights Watch/Americas, another major beneficiary of his funds, attacked the national forces deployed against the drug cartels as “human rights violators.” It should be noted that the pro-drug guerrillas in Colombia are known to be bloody-thirsty kidnappers, and murderers, who terrorize the nation.
In the United States, Soros worked with the pro-drug Mayor of Baltimore Kurt Schmoke, to promote “progressive” drug policies, including needle-exchange programs. Soros “donated” $25 million to spreading illegal drugs in the city.

1998: Another Soros-related group, the Andean Council of Coca Leaf Producers, begins to carry out an armed revolt in Bolivia, under the banner “Coca or Death.” The Council was established by a European group called Coca 95, whose chief financier was Soros, and whose directors call for free trade in every narcotic on the face of the earth: cocaine, heroin, marijuana and synthetics.
Soros’s Lindesmith Center in June of this year, issues an Open Letter to Kofi Annan calling for a “truly open” dialogue on illegal drugs — claiming that clamping down on them is worse than drug abuse itself, and demanding that legalization be put on the table.

2000: Soros moves both through Human Rights Watch, and direct funding of the Toledo Presidential campaign, to topple the successful anti-drug government of Alberto Fujimori in Peru. EIR forecasts that the new Soros-backed government will move to put anti-drug fighters in prison, and bring back the murderous Sendero Luminoso — which it has done.

2001: In June, the Wall Street Journal gives major coverage to the decision by Soros, along with billionaires Peter Lewis and John Sperling, to kick in at least $10 million for the 2002 elections, where they will target Florida, Ohio, and Michigan for decriminalization referenda.
Soros also funds a drive for decriminalization of marijuana in Canada.

2002: Soros funded a referendum on the Nevada ballot, which called for the legalization of marijuana use, and would {mandate} that the state begin growing and retail distribution of the drug to anyone over 21 years of age. The effort was run by a Washington, D.C.-based group, the Marijuana Policy Project, which receives direct funding from Soros, through the Drug Policy Foundation, which has received more than $15 million from Soros in recent years. The Drug Policy Foundation recently merged with the Lindesmith Center, a project of Soros’s Open Society Institute tax-exempt foundation. The new, unified entity, the Drug Policy Alliance, is run by Soros employee Dr. Ethan Nadelman. Soros has poured at least $25 million into various dope legalization schemes over the past five years, and has vowed to substantially increase his bankrolling of the dope lobby efforts.
The Marijuana Policy Project was launched by a former official of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Legislation (NORML), the oldest of the drug legalization fronts now under the Soros umbrella.

I would like to thank the comment by The Truth about Think Progress in #15 on George Soros and his Open Society Fund. I am not sure of your intentions, but after reading your post, I have a new respect for Soros. Imagine that. A liberal standing up for what he believes in and actually putting his money and reputation where his mouth is.

I say Hurrah for Soros and a big thank you to The Truth about Think Progress for pointing out the personal history of a fine man.

November will be a time of biblical sorrow, wailing, nashing teeth, that sort of thing. Anyone esle see anything odd about the timing of this British airplane terror scare? It could be real, given that everyone hates our guts. It’s just too goddamn creepy when evil Dick and the gang start trying to scare the shit out of everyone and muzzle the disssenters…and suddenly a major terror op. .gets foiled.

    Repent!

#15 Wow, you learned to educate yourself, nice work. That’s the first step in pulling your head out of Bush’s ass.

Yet, how stupid are you? Everything you mentioned he’s done is a GODSEND to America. Sometimes, the only way to fight extreme, embedded corruption requires mimicking your foes tactics (i.e. Political Financial Support.)

All hail the mighty George Soros! A man brave enough (and wealthy enough) to spend HIS OWN MONEY supporting worldwide humanitarian efforts!

    Bravo!

  28. Democratic Soldier says:

#25 – You’ve got that right! George Soros helps balance out all the special-interest money that the Republican party has whored itself out for over the past 20 years.

I agree, it’s a good thing that “The Truth about Think Progress” is singing the praise of George Soros!

  29. Republican says:

Once again I am indebted to you:

Your take that in 1992, Soros’s speculation made big news. I mean, kind of like Cheney and Halliburton. Maybe we could get Soros for VP? I bet he could get us out of debt.

As for the June, 2001 Wall Street Journal giving major coverage to the decision by Soros, along with billionaires Peter Lewis and John Sperling, to kick in at least $10 million for the 2002 elections, I say so what? Someone has to compete with the “Swift Boat” bunch and Republican Corpora$e coffers.

And your take that in 2002, Soros funded a referendum on the Nevada ballot, which called for the legalization of marijuana use is pretty good. I mean, I don’t use pot myself, unlike George Bush, but as long as the Administration has thrown in the towel on the war on drugs, why not a little pot.

And your headline, SOROS THE DRUG PUSHER: Now that part I have some real trouble with. I mean, for all we know he could have been Geoege Bush’s supplier.

    Anyway, thanks again, my man.

How did this get so messed up?

  33. Democratic Soldier says:

#25 – There you go again, telling more lies and spreading calumny and mendacity like it’s a good thing. Poor unfortunate soul.

“Hastert used the Fox appearance to blurt out a bizarre and baseless accusation about billionaire George Soros, a Democratic Party financier and donor to anti-Bush 527s.”

“Soros spokesman Michael Vachon says there’s been a “concerted effort to smear George Soros since he became an administration critic” and calls the Hastert comments the “usual conservative message-machine M.O.: Throw something out there and see if it sticks.””

“Hastert states in a Sept. 1 letter to Soros that he never referred to drug cartels on Fox News Sunday, that Chris Wallace did. The “drug groups” Hastert claims to have had in mind were the “Drug Policy Foundation, The Open Society, The Lendesmith [sic] Center, the Andean Council of Coca Leaf Producers, and several ballot initiatives across the country to decriminalize illegal drug use.” On this score, Hastert’s letter is completely disingenuous. These groups are beneficiaries of Soros wealth: He’s given them money. In the program transcript, Hastert is clearly asking about the source of Soros’ money for his political and social campaigns, and then he asks the leading question, is it from “overseas or from drug groups”?

Where did Hastert get the notion that Soros might be getting money from drug cartels? A good guess would be the organization headed by political fantasist, convicted felon, and perpetual presidential candidate Lyndon H. LaRouche Jr. This campaign literature from the “LaRouche in 2004″ Web site, dated Oct. 29, 2003, makes the drug charge directly:

Years of investigation by LaRouche’s associates have answered that question in grisly detail: Soros’s money comes from impoverishment of the poor countries against whose currencies he speculates, and from deadly mind-destroying, terrorism-funding drugs.

The LaRouchie slander of Soros dates back to the early ’90s. Michael Lewis recorded an anti-Soros protest by LaRouche followers in a Jan. 10, 1994, profile in the New Republic. Since then, the drug charge has been a LaRouche literature mainstay.”

No, George at one time admitted to being a real substance abuser. And his wife says he was an even bigger drunk than me!

Try arguing the facts, not your lame opinion. Look at Lieberman’s voting record on everything except the Iraq War. I’m sure you’ll find that ideologically he was closer to you than he was to me. Further note that I think it’s past time for us to start withdrawing troops from Iraq and letting the Iraqis handle it.

So I guess that means you are not a dipshit, either. Only a shit. ;).

Please only delete the text of a post.

  44. Republican says:

Funny guy, that Joe Sixpack. I’m not a shit either. I think people are quick to judge. My use of retarded was, admittedly, nasty, but come on. Joe Lieberman is so far from conservative it’s ridiculous. You realize that if the conservatives are courting Lieberman, it’s only on the hope that by splitting the Dem vote between Lamont and Lieberman, they might get a conservative elected from CT? It’s a stupid hope that won’t happen, but by convincing Joe to run, they really might be hoping for it. Personally, it’s a lost cause, and I think the Republicans need to concentrate on not losing ground in other states.

  45. Joe Sixpack says:

Joe Lieberman is so far from conservative it’s ridiculous. You realize that if the conservatives are courting Lieberman, it’s only on the hope that by splitting the Dem vote between Lamont and Lieberman, they might get a conservative elected from CT? Comment by Republican

You have a point, Rep. Still, if you think about Connecticut and it being a liberal stonghold, Joe could very well be considered a conservative by the base in his district. Like Cheney being a “moderate” by his Wyoming base. And the truth of the matter is that of course the conservatives support Lieberman in hopes of splitting the democratic vote enough to slip in another Republican. I would be disappointed in those sneaks if they did not at least try.

  46. Democratic Soldier says:

#45 – Good point. Republicans are usually on the attack. For example: “You’re just a tax & spend liberal!” It worked for over a decade to put their opponents on the defensive then they were able to drive the argument.

If the Democrats had shut down specious attacks like that, they’d have held their own. For example: I’d rather tax & spend than borrow and squander! Jesus was a liberal, so you darned right I’m a liberal!

I think that Sen. Lieberman is more conservative than you think, but far from a conservative kool-aid drinker. (Yeah, that was a cheap shot.) He’s just gotten out of touch with the Democrats in Connecticut and they didn’t select him in the primary. If he had a shred of decency, he’d say “the people have spoken” and give up like he did in 2000 and 2004.

  47. Joe Sixpack says:

Hey, DM, no problem. I never thought you considered me a troll and know we have posted together here before. I just wasn’t sure you were the same Democratic Soldier and not that other guy, Republican Soldier (in drag).

Still, I do go against the grain now and then and side with the Israelis or military here which opens me up to a lot of flack. At least the trolls know we are not a bunch of lefties in lockstep, but also have individual and progressive thinking.

  48. return of reddog says:

  49. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #20,

43% of registered Dems is nothing compared to all registered voters – I heard 43% of register Dems represents only 20% of all registered voters. Come November, Lamont will be beaten by Lieberman.

  50. bboop says:

Jason-we actually had a HUGE turnout in CT for the primary compared with previous primaries. Normally, 20-30% of the registered voters can be expected to show and we would consider that good. As a poll worker in CT for 30 years, I can attest that most district officials throughout the state reported anywhere between 35 – 58% of their Dems had come to cast a ballot. That’s amazing for a hot August day. Almost 30,000 people changed their affiliations to vote Democratic in CT on 8/8 according to the Sec’y of State’s office. Many of us believe that it was these former Independents who made Lamont a winner. The Dems were divided.

  51. Jay Randal says:
