White House officials and surrogates have fanned out in a coordinated Rovian campaign to smear their opponents as “defeatists” and “cut-and-runners.” In a mass email yesterday, former Rove deputy Ken Mehlman turned his guns on Rep. John Murtha:
The message from Connecticut is clear, and Ned Lamont isn’t alone. He is joined by Rep. John Murtha…who claims America is more dangerous than Iran and North Korea.
Mehlman is referencing a 6/25/06 story in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, which reported that Murtha said he believed the “American presence in Iraq is more dangerous to world peace than nuclear threats from North Korea or Iran.â€
Three days later, the paper retracted the report. Murtha was actually citing an international public opinion poll, not expressing his own views. But why let facts get in the way of a perfectly good smear?
I'm not sure just how much more of this I can take. For F*ck sake!
August 10th, 2006 at 3:51 pmMakes you wonder what these guys would do if they illiminated all restraint.
August 10th, 2006 at 3:51 pmmellonhead makes everyone laugh.
they are scared. they know they will be chains soon.
August 10th, 2006 at 3:53 pmYes, these guys are scared. They are starting to lash out like a cornered animal.
August 10th, 2006 at 3:55 pmThey demonized John Kerry and made the public believe that a president who hid from duty during Nam and an inner circle full of cowards were more "patriots" than a man who was awarded three Purple Hearts. Now this, an effort to demonize one of their own. Another true war hero.
May these bastards rot in hell.
August 10th, 2006 at 3:58 pmBe scared America. There are even terrorists in your closet.

August 10th, 2006 at 3:58 pmMehlman's finger smells like doo doo.
August 10th, 2006 at 3:59 pmOoops. Mehlman.
But I do like Melon-head.
That one made me chuckle.
August 10th, 2006 at 3:59 pmHe looks like he was "sliding into first and felt something burst...."
August 10th, 2006 at 3:59 pmAttention all soldiers currently serving in Iraq, if this is how they treat Murtha, imagine what they really think of you.
August 10th, 2006 at 4:01 pmSo, every redstate poster will now obediently go out and vote for republicans....
What about the other 99.999997 % of america?
August 10th, 2006 at 4:01 pmATTENTION!!!
Dems had better get out sh*t in order. These guys (Repugs) will use terror and everything else to scare the bejesus out of the general public and have welfare mothers voting Repuglican. Have backbone Dems, tell us how the 'War on Terror' is real and important but 'IRAQ' is a failed policy that helps no one. Dems for Pete sake attack the Repugs, dont just sit and take it. Get behind Murtha and explain how these idiots have smeared him and all decent folk who think diffrently than them. Repugs always say, if you disagree with their view, you are wrong. We need to expose that fallacy! One nation under GOD, not idiot, meglomaniacle neocons.

August 10th, 2006 at 4:03 pmUnfortunately we will hear the voices of the Gay turncoat Jew Ken Mehlman to smear Democrats until November. We will also hear Tony Snow as well.
McCarthyism apepars alive and well from the source it began with in the 1950's the party of george Lincoln Rockwell: GOP.
August 10th, 2006 at 4:04 pmFor heaven's sake, why would you expect the GOP to start caring about the truth now?

August 10th, 2006 at 4:06 pmBushco and their neocon planners for perpetual war have changed the shape of the world for at least the next generation if not longer.
These criminally and pathologically immoral and unprincipled gangsters need to go !
August 10th, 2006 at 4:09 pmCut and run from what? All the news I have seen for 3 weeks is the Israeli/Hezbollah show which is being covered 24/7 by all the networks with at least two dozen TV anchors on location.
Before that, it was 24/7 about the rape case against the Lacross players.
Before that it was Hurricane Katrina 24/7 all stations. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that also where the Administration "cut and run?"
August 10th, 2006 at 4:09 pmSo, Exley is really Mehlman?
August 10th, 2006 at 4:12 pm.
And yet Joe, is Anderson Cooper the only reporter "on location" who has the ability to do a news report and not a public relations piece? Christ, they got rid of Dan Rather for asking too many questions---guess the media lives in fear, too.

Folks here in Texas didi not even realize that Ricky Bobby is making fun of them (rightfully so). I love Will Ferell and the movie but when will these Bush synchophants get a clue?

August 10th, 2006 at 4:13 pmMehlman should be in uniform. Send the stupid bastard to Iraq.
August 10th, 2006 at 4:13 pmOh what a tangled web we weave the moment we begin to deceive.
Give the turdblossom Mehleman a break, it is hard to remember all of those lies.
August 10th, 2006 at 4:14 pmSorry juice, but don't you get the distinct feeling that either the dems are in on the fix or that the neocons have something on them that scares the hell out them? No one can be this stupid, or weak.
August 10th, 2006 at 4:16 pmDon't kid yourself. John "Benedict" Murtha new what he was saying , when he said it and the context of it. Just like in 2004 the hype didn't match the results. It won't be any different this time. Republicans scared, what a farce!
August 10th, 2006 at 4:19 pm#24,
I know what you mean. Do they have pics of Clinton with little girls or with Michael Jackson? No cajoones in the Demorcratic party! Teresa has more ba**s than John Kerry, and I like him. We need to be tough as nails, and smart, thats our message. Tough enough to stop terrorism, smart enough not to do another Iraq! Why do so many neocans look alike? Rove, Limbaugh, my ex boss...

August 10th, 2006 at 4:21 pmDon’t kid yourself. John “Benedict†Murtha new what he was saying
Yes, and so do we. All clear, now?
August 10th, 2006 at 4:23 pm.
Let's face it. Ken Mehlman is a serial liar. Even Rush Limbaugh has more integrity than Mehlman - even though Limbaugh's integrity score is zero.
August 10th, 2006 at 4:25 pm"If we fight them over there we don't have to fight them here." Do the neocons think terorist are f**cking STUPID? They would rather carry explosives across the southern border looking like Mexicans that fight a division of armoured calvary in Iraq.
Why do folks beleive the crap the administration tells us! Anyone ever wonder why so many muslims hate us. Think it is because Allah told them too? Think a little deeper than that, look at our history with them for the last 50 years. There is the answer,,,neocons be dammned!

These a**holes would swiftboat Jesus if they didn't like what he has to say.
August 10th, 2006 at 4:27 pmBush/cheney/rove are at war with anyone who doesn’t support them. They FEAR what voters will do in November. A Democratic majority in Congress is the equivalent of losing the WH. They get their way because they control congress and thus, there is no oversight. A Democratic Congress with subpoena power terrifies them. They cannot stand on their record so negative campaigning is the only way they can win. Stand by for lots of thwarted terrorists’ attacks and possibly even one or two successful ones.
August 10th, 2006 at 4:27 pmThats correct. And then?

Good take. Anderson Cooper does seem to be on top of it. I like his reporters on all sides of the border. Still, Sean Hannity is an expert on the crisis, and he doesn't even need to go “on location†for his public relations pieces. He covers it all from the Fox News Network relying on the expert military minds of Ollie North, USMC retired, Dick Cheney's mouth pieces, and Newt Gingrich.
August 10th, 2006 at 4:28 pmAs far as I am concerned, Benedict should be put on trail for aiding the enemies of the USA. Semfer fi except in Benedict's world.

August 10th, 2006 at 4:36 pmSon, John Murtha forgot more about what America is really all about than you or your fascist brethren will ever learn. Unlike Bush, Cheney, Wolfie and the inner circle, the swiftboat cowards and undoubtedly you, he was in the line of fire.
This is real life son. American kids are dying for the whims of a group of cowardly yet power-lusting maniacs. Now go out and play with the other kids.

I agree... We know what works with a bully... you stand up and punch him in the face. And if he thinks that is all you got and still stands there punch a couple more times.
These damn democrats have logical and moral and even Jesus truth on their side and they scramble around like idiots. They REFUSE to say on every talk show what they WILL do about 911 and terrorism. They only say yes to Afghanistan and no to Iraq.... so does that mean Afghanistan took care of the problem? Are they saying terrorism is fake? That it will go away with no real effort? The people support republicans because they are DOING something and as long as democrats refuse to say what they will DO about it people just assume they will get in office and pretend there is no problem until 911 part 2 happens. Even Lamont on TV yesterday when asked by Matthews what he would have done about 911 he said ... 1) Yes to Afghanistan and 2) No to Iraq.... ok ... and then thats all he said... which left me and I am sure many republicans and independants thinking that he thought the problem was taken care of by invading Afghanistan and the only problem left is Iraq...
They need to put an image in peoples minds so that when they think about terrorism they say in their minds ... 1) Republicans == attack anything and everything arab (it is SOMETHING but it is causing problems and doesnt seem a very bright approach just an easy appraoch)... and 2) Democrats will .... ABC.... who knows? Attack Saudi Arabia? Focus like a laser beam on a final settlement of the Israel issue? WHAT?!?!?! The people need a short sentence right there so they can decide which way is worth a shot...
August 10th, 2006 at 4:37 pmSomeone ought to put together all the GOP's use of outdated/retracted/misquoted sources and show how out of touch these schmucks or heck, to show how dirty they fight...well like in ad...and other than how its done on a regular daily basis at mediamatters.

You mean "Semper Fi" or "Semper Fidelis." An easy mistake to make. One John Murtha, USMC Retired, wouldn't make.
What I find so cheezy about Cheeks, is that it's so easy to attack a guy who served I think 33 years in service to his country, was wounded twice in Vietnam, one of which was in the face, and then have the gall to call him a Benedict Arnold.

Sounds like he is also getting his talking points from Mehlman!
“If we just pick up like Ned Lamont wants us to do, get out by a date certain, it will be taken as a tremendous victory by the same people who wanted to blow up these planes in this plot hatched in England,†Mr. Lieberman said at a campaign event at lunchtime in Waterbury, Conn. “It will strengthen them and they will strike again.â€

August 10th, 2006 at 4:50 pmWhile the Republican Party uses every means at its disposal to turn the CT primary to their advantage, one thing is clear: they are in a downward spiral. We can only expect more slander, lies, and political crimes as election day draws near, so steel yourselves folks!
The GOP is going down and they know it. Don't expect them not to use EVERY dirty trick in their playbook by the time November rolls around... because once their out, they'll be gone for a long, long, time
August 10th, 2006 at 4:51 pmI wish they would do their jobs and stop waging these idiotic Karl Rove talking points wars? How much time do they waste doing this?
August 10th, 2006 at 4:51 pmI am not sure which is most disturbing... these gangster thugs who will stop at nothing or stupid America who may buy this idiotic crap.

August 10th, 2006 at 4:55 pmUh the point is that the GOP was supposed to scare people away from the polls the other day. And they failed. Because people are no longer buying the nonsense and failures they keep trying to sell like damaged food at the grocery store.
So, they will continue trying to scare people from voting for democrats in November, and keep up this failed rhetoric the entire time. Given that the Lamont win has shaken them down to their boots, I expect this rhetoric to be proped up before the press and public now on a daily basis.
August 10th, 2006 at 4:55 pmYOU lap up the gravy BUTT CHEEKS
August 10th, 2006 at 4:57 pmKarma in and Karma out. Anybody remember Lee Atwater?
August 10th, 2006 at 4:58 pmFor the Dem's sake, how hard could it be to pick up where the Pukes dropped the ball (Osama) and project a National Security hardline image which ALSO upholds our most basic Constitutional values?
Not hard at all. Unless they're unable to shed the boat anchor of corruption.
August 10th, 2006 at 4:59 pmWhy scare away people from polls when you managed to manipulate each of the last two national elections? THAT is the question.
August 10th, 2006 at 5:00 pmThis is only the beginning - there will be smears, slander, and libel coming at Democrats from every angle and from every Repug. It started yesterday with the loss of Lieberman, it is aided and abetted by Lieberman himself, and now every Repug interviewed on the MSM will take this opportunity to use an RNC talking point or two.
Someone ask them, why is the terror alert RED today, when the plan was known at least a week ago? I know we didn't want to tip off the terrorists, but is this just more reinforcement of the propaganda? Catapulting the propaganda?
Also, the similar plan that was thwarted in the mid-90's -- who was president then?
Whose NSA was effective?
Remember the first WTC bomb in 1992? Who prosecuted the perpetrators?
Finally, isn't Bush always on vacation when "things" happen?
August 10th, 2006 at 5:02 pmAh yes, Lee Atwater - the mentor of Karl Rove. The guru who trained him.
August 10th, 2006 at 5:05 pmAtwater, however, made a deathbed confession of his low down dirty tricks.
So go back to slopping up your butt gravy!

August 10th, 2006 at 5:19 pmOffense must be the strategy. To counteract this sort of thing, a campaign for the Dems should revolve around the concept of Bumbling.
Soundbiting: "We as a nation can no longer abide the President's bumbling on controlling the deficit."
"The Bush administration's bumbling must stop right here, right now!"
"The Republicans have obviously decided that Americans prefer their bumbling to Democrat's competency. I think they are wrong."
Phony rhetorical questions: "Is Bush and the Republican's bumbling making the world more dangerous?"
"How dangerous is Mr. Bush's bumbling in Iraq?"
"Can the Bush Adminstritation's bumbling in world diplomacy be overcome by the next president?"
Straw men: "Some say the Bush Administration is bumbling on the economy . . . what's your response?"
"Some would say the GOP is a bunch of bumblers . . . How much truth is there in that?"
Screen-crawlers: "Has the Bush Admin's Bumbling Hurt the New Orleans' Recovery?"

August 10th, 2006 at 6:16 pmOn Hardball last night, Mehlman blamed Reagan for 9/11. He said our pullout from Beirut in '83 emboldened bin Laden, and Chris Matthews pointed out that Reagan did that. If you're a Repug and get nailed by Tweety, you suck pretty bad, since he only plays softball with Repugs. I would include the transcript but the link for the transcript of last night's show doesn't work.

I like Wesley Clark. I like quite a few of the top Dems. First things first. Dems need to take congress in 2006, period.
In order:
August 10th, 2006 at 6:18 pm1. Take back the Congress
2. Take back the media
3. Take back the party
I share the outrage of my fellow Democrats here over what the right is able get away with.
Enabled by the stenographers/media.
Enabled by a generally fearful, ignorant populace.
Enabled by cultural programming--having been taught not to question those in authority.
I'm angry.America should be better than this.

August 10th, 2006 at 6:19 pmHe want's to cut and run. He hates freedom. He loves the terrorists!!
What, he's a republican?? Shit...........
Wonder how often Melman visits the injured troops in the military hospitals. If he is so brave, then he needs to get his skinny butt over to Iraq.
August 10th, 2006 at 6:20 pmI'm surprised Mehlman doesn't attack those soldiers and other Americans who died in Iraq for "cutting and running." I mean after all Pat Robertson claimed that Bush told him there wasn't going to be any casualties in Iraq. But I'm sure Ken is glad that those soldiers are dying in Iraq rather than him. I mean "courage" and "honor" are only nouns to be used for political speeches, not to be exemplified or anything.
August 10th, 2006 at 6:45 pmThe GOP wingnuts don't care ! They live in another universe !

August 10th, 2006 at 7:06 pmKenny Gay Boy is flapping his large lips again. He looks better with a weenie between those female lips.
I think I have a good slogan for the upcoming elections. Just two words, and a question mark.
HAD ENOUGH?
August 10th, 2006 at 7:33 pmMurtha's a wimp, cut and run liberal and you know it.
August 10th, 2006 at 7:39 pm[...] Ken Mehlman to muddy the water, obfuscate, adumbrate, lowering the curtain of the Presidency so as to obscure the fields of freedom in which scores of Bush initiatives lie mortally wounded under the weight of Incompetency, Corruption, Halliburton and Big Oil [...]
August 10th, 2006 at 7:46 pmWay to go, Brandi. Nice respect you're showing to one of this country's few heros. Keep up the good work. All people like you do is let our troops know that you don't truly respect them. You Bush lovers are all the same. Shame on you.
August 10th, 2006 at 7:47 pmAmerica has always been more dangerous. You should ask argentina, venezuela, native americans, republic of congo, and Iran. If only the U.S. could endorse more facist regimes, maybe it would become more apparent to rednecks around the south.....................
August 10th, 2006 at 8:21 pmAllright, caption contest.
"Who you lookin' at, you lookin' at me?"
August 10th, 2006 at 8:27 pmMurtha: been there, done that.
Others: haven't been there, haven't done it.
Who would you listen to?
August 10th, 2006 at 8:29 pmAmericans are So Dumb! They are fooled every time by this moronic President. When will they wake up? Why don't they listen to democrats who have their best interest at heart?
Democrats need to talk more about the war, and their much better exit strategy. They need to push the obvious need to re-enact the draft. Just Hating Bush gets old after a while.
August 10th, 2006 at 8:32 pmMurtha' not a troop, he's a traitor to the military.
August 10th, 2006 at 8:33 pmMehlman is such a slimeball. Let the swiftboating commence!
August 10th, 2006 at 9:10 pmKevin
Ken Melman needs to go to Iraq and stay a while. The coward. The hypocrite. Must be tough standing in the closet and acting like a tough guy. If he had any guts, he would be who he truly is and not the tumorous slab that he is as Bush's bitch.
August 10th, 2006 at 9:14 pmBrandi and Cheeks are exactly the type of stupid koolaid drinkers TexasJuice was talking about. Get a clue!
August 10th, 2006 at 9:17 pmThe current crop of GOP chicken hawks should be referred to, in Rovian style, as "those who did not serve". Until they do serve they are unqualified to criticize John Murtha, or any other person who has served.
My advice to Melhman is enlist, serve, then come back to criticize - if he still wants to.
Would the democratic leadership please make this point?
August 10th, 2006 at 9:28 pmTipical.
August 10th, 2006 at 9:29 pmMurtha’ (SIC) not a troop, he’s a traitor to the military.
Comment by Brandi
Brandi sounds like Ann-thrax Coulter. Yeah, call Murtha, a multi-decorated war hero who regularly visits those wounded in the Iraq War, a "traitor" and try to swiftboat him as much as you can. Have you or Ann-thrax ever visited wounded soldiers in the hospital or done something else to help them? Have you ever served in the military, or are you just another typical Rethug chickenhawk?
August 10th, 2006 at 9:29 pmKevin your comment seems so, so, so, stupid. do you have an idea about what your talkingabout? apparently not. Murtha's a whore, and a traitor. Hate to say it but if anyone on this site ever had an idea other than what they were told, the world would probably end.
August 10th, 2006 at 9:29 pmVote for JOE
Well Lora, ask mr traitor what happened the last time he tried to visit some troops.
August 10th, 2006 at 9:31 pmI'll even help you out.. look where he's on vacation
August 10th, 2006 at 9:33 pmPoor Brandi....it must be terminal illness or just plain ol' ignorance. How it is that a man like Murtha who served honorably is a wimp and the cowards like cheney, bush, oreilly, hannity, rove, ashcroft, delay...(shall i go on because the list is very long...) who never served and even dodged their service are considered "patriots" is beyond me.
August 10th, 2006 at 9:39 pmBrandi's married to a soldier who's currently serving in Iraq, and she's cheating on him with two of his brothers.
August 10th, 2006 at 9:42 pmThe republican party should rename themselves as the party of "Gutless Cowards Who Were Too Scared To Serve" because that party has so many cowards who play the "patriot card." It's amazing that all these so-called patriots like Brandi and Barbara can sit there with a clear conscious and label a man who served 33 years as a marine a coward and yet suckle at the breasts of such losers like bush and cheney. I just wonder why they never ever mention the fact that their boys never served or defended this nation at anytime in their existence, hell even cheney was such a coward he got 5..count em..5 deferrments from serving... Major coward there!!!
August 10th, 2006 at 9:48 pmIs Ken Mehlman still denying he's GAY??
August 10th, 2006 at 9:52 pmThese Republicrooks are insane. They have created their own little fantasy parallel reality, their own Republicrook Bizarro World. August 10th, 2006 at 10:00 pmI sure hope people have had their fill of these fools. I sure have had enough and now hate this Administration and Republican party with a deep heart felt passion.
August 10th, 2006 at 10:04 pmAnd Ken Mehlman served in what branch of service in what war? Hell I thought he was too cowardly to come out of the closet and admit he is gay.
These assholes, the chickenshit chickenhawks can really be brave in calling men and women who have actually put their asses on the line names and demeaning them.
Screw all these cowards all the way to the top drunken AWOL coward in Crawford. Murtha has more sense than the entire GOP put together.
Vote the bastards out of office in November.
August 10th, 2006 at 10:08 pmYes, the Republicans are down to using discredited, retracted stories and saying the 60% of Americans who want out of the political, economic and moral failure and morass called Iraq are fringe lunatics when they're actually the center majority. I guess they're coming unglued at the thought of losing their extortion rackets in Congress and the Presidency

I would simply amend it to read: "Mehlman’s finger smells likeROVE'S doo doo".
When is a real leader going to stand up and put to shame the chicken hawk, AWOL, draft evading Republicans who got us so far into this mess we cannot find an path out?
Probably not from the ranks of the Uber Democrats like Clinton, and Liberman, that's for sure--the professional election-losers at the DNC will ensure another glorious round of defeats for progressives by giving us unelctable candiadtes, yet again--the Republicans don't have to steal elections, the DNC just hands them over...
Where are the Statesmen, the leaders, the courageous who will finally and at last articulate what most Americans have come to realize?
Emperor George has no clothes, no credibility, no coherent policies.
Name one positive thing he's done FOR America in his time in office...uh, other than giving Paris Hilton an enormous tax break, I mean.

August 10th, 2006 at 11:13 pmThat poor bastard Mehlman has NOTHING to pitch on behalf of the neocon crooks. NOTHING. What is the GOP going to run on? Murtha disagrees with us? Iraq is a success? Gas is "only" $3.00 a gallon? Joe Lieberman was "right?" What a sad, sorry SOB.
August 10th, 2006 at 11:31 pmKen Mehlman is not a 'car carry memeber' of the White house pedophiles club.
Ever notice, that Dubya has been seen publicly kissing and holding hands with an assortment of men, but never even as much with his Wife? Let alone another woman. Is that how he dodged the draft?

August 11th, 2006 at 12:06 amMehlman is a chickenhawk attacking a decorated Marine officer. Mehlman is still young enough to enlist in the Army. Army extended the enlistment age to 42. This is a chance to see if Mehlman is tough on terror or just a chickenhawk. Same for Mary Cheyney. Come on Mary show us how tough you are. Your father chickened out of the Vietnam war five times. It your chance to show who has the balls in the family.
August 11th, 2006 at 12:11 am#130 Brandi
Murtha’ not a troop, he’s a traitor to the military.
Pay close attention now. There are some things that you should know. You probably had never heard of John Murtha before your favorite extreme right Fox News anchor, talk radio show host, or blogger started smearing him, so here's some background. He joined the Marines during the Korean War in 1952. He volunteered to serve in Vietnam 14 years later. He served honorably and was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor device, two Purple Hearts and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He retired from the Reserves as a colonel in 1990 and received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal. He has always been highly respected by the members of the armed forces and still is.
He supported Bush's invasion of Iraq. In fact there probably wasn't another Democrat and not very many Republicans who offered as much support to Bush as Murtha did. But, after visiting so many men and women at Walter Reed Hospital who had returned from Iraq with their minds, bodies, families, and lives shattered, and after hearing from so many officers in the field telling him that Bush and Rumsfeld weren't telling the truth about what was going on over there, he thought it was time to speak up. A number of high-ranking officers asked him for help in getting the president and the Congress to understand the situation over there, but Bush ignored him. He wrote to the president to relay the troops' concerns to him and never even got the courtesy of a response. Fed up, he finally went public.
Oh, but you mustn't say anything contrary to the little emperor's fantasy version of the Iraq war. Anyone who dares speak the truth must be destroyed! And so, Bush's faithful mouthpieces set out to destroy Murtha. And apparently they've been able to find enough morons out there who will listen to them and repeat the silly crap they say, like "Murtha's a traitor to the military."
Murtha's the best friend our troops have. You wouldn't know that, because you, like everyone in the administration--especially Bush, Cheney, and Rove--know nothing about the military. The Bush White House is the biggest collection of pussies ever assembled in human history. They all chickened out when they had a chance to serve their country. But, boy-oh-boy can they talk tough now when they're sending other people's kids to die.
August 11th, 2006 at 12:27 amMehlman and the GOP want to destroy Rep. Murtha, like they did to Rep. McKinney, in Georgia!
August 11th, 2006 at 12:45 amCheyney, Bush, Mehlman and the whole pack of rats are nothing but yellow-bellied cowards who are gungho until the enemy charges, and then they go and hide and tell other men to go out and die.
August 11th, 2006 at 1:11 amMelman's head has been in rove's sphincter region a wee bit to long!
August 11th, 2006 at 1:15 am'Badmouthing Brandi' would never say it to his face. It is the true coward. Go and douche, you are foul.
August 11th, 2006 at 1:54 amWhile Murtha is smeared the Republican congress screws our veterans yet again:
Congress appears ready to slash funding for the research and treatment of brain injuries caused by bomb blasts, an injury that military scientists describe as a signature wound of the Iraq war.
House and Senate versions of the 2007 Defense appropriation bill contain $7 million for the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center — half of what the center received last fiscal year.
Proponents of increased funding say they are shocked to see cuts in the treatment of bomb blast injuries in the midst of a war.
"I find it basically unpardonable that Congress is not going to provide funds to take care of our soldiers and sailors who put their lives on the line for their country," says Martin Foil, a member of the center's board of directors. "It blows my imagination."
The Brain Injury Center, devoted to treating and understanding war-related brain injuries, has received more money each year of the war — from $6.5 million in fiscal 2001 to $14 million last year. Spokespersons for the appropriations committees in both chambers say cuts were due to a tight budget this year.
"Honestly, they would have loved to have funded it, but there were just so many priorities," says Jenny Manley, spokeswoman for the Senate Appropriations Committee. "They didn't have any flexibility in such a tight fiscal year."
George Zitnay, co-founder of the center, testified before a Senate subcommittee in May that body armor saves troops caught in blasts but leaves many with brain damage. "Traumatic brain injury is the signature injury of the war on terrorism," he testified.
Zitnay asked for $19 million, and 34 Democratic and six Republican members of Congress signed a letter endorsing the budget request.
The House of Representatives approved its version of the spending bill June 20. A vote in the Senate is pending.
Scientists at the center develop ways to diagnose and treat servicemembers who suffer brain damage. The work is done at seven military and Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals, including the center's headquarters at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, and one civilian treatment site.
The center has clashed with the Pentagon in recent months over a program to identify troops who have suffered mild to moderate brain injuries in Iraq from mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and roadside bombs — the most common weapons used by insurgents.
Preliminary research by the center shows that about 10% of all troops in Iraq, and up to 20% of front line infantry troops, suffer concussions during combat tours. Many experience headaches, disturbed sleep, memory loss and behavior issues after coming home, the research shows.
The center urged the Pentagon to screen all troops returning from Iraq in order to treat symptoms and create a database of brain injury victims. Scientists say multiple concussions can cause permanent brain damage.
The Pentagon so far has declined to do the screening and argues that more research is needed.

August 11th, 2006 at 6:55 am... Lots of Neocons are all wrapped up in them.
Perhaps Mr. Mehlman should check his meds, he's getting forgetful.
August 11th, 2006 at 7:15 amTWO THINGS:
1. Refresh my recollection - what war did Mehlman serve in?
2. His parents may have been Jewish, but Mehlman is not. Just as arab radicals are not true Muslims, Mehlman is not Jewish regardless of what he may claim; He belongs to the Church of Rove and has drunk of the cool-aid.
August 11th, 2006 at 8:01 amKen Melmen looks like shit?
August 11th, 2006 at 8:23 amAmerica wake up. Even here in a tiny town in central Texas we're cheering John Murtha, who had the courage to call the current thieves and liars running our country what they are.
. so if there is terrorism in the world BuchCO is part of it. Google terrorstorm.com or visit http://www.infowars.com. Stand up and be counted before you are in one of our "civilian labor" camps run by the military. Get active, get involved. The Connecticut primary should energize anyone who believes there is no power at the individual level.
August 11th, 2006 at 8:25 amIf you read the blogs, you knew this was coming. Mr. Murtha posted at the HP and we let him know we have his back when they try to swift boat him.
It is pathetic attempt to smear this great American and the only people who like this bullshit is the right wingnut moonbats at the lgf and free republic.
Failed Americans.

August 11th, 2006 at 8:35 amComment #6 - You are "right on" - the semantics of our language have been altered by BushCo to mean the opposite of what they traditionally have meant....the true patriots are the ones who are "singing" about the level of chicanery, corruption, lies, & deceit - the real terrorists are in the administration trying to squelch our voices. Don't deceive yourselves into believing that your vote counts though....go to the Huffington post and see how easily Diebold machines can be corrupted and HAVE been for a LONG time! Paper trail is the ONLY way to vote or just like the language semantics, your vote will be reversed, too!
Also....connect the dots to where we are now with ANY voice left (democracy anyone?)...can't peacefully demonstrate, votes are hacked, being spied on, and now NOTHING we can do about it. Hello out there - anyone listening to the "final throes" of a democracy?
If you want/need more go to 911truth.com and watch some of their footage....inside job? Can you trust ANYTHING these neocons say any more? I don't!
August 11th, 2006 at 8:47 amThis bunch of neocon criminals will say or do anything for advantage. I am 55 years old and have never in my life seen so many criminals gathered into one gang. Yes gang like the crips or the bloods. we have the neocon nazi's! Look in the face of dick chenny look at his eyes, madman, greedy, insane are just a few thoughts that come to mind. My god people under this neocon rule we have watched the destruction of our country as well as a large section of the arab world. We have gone from a 3 trillion dollar projected surplus to a 9 trillion dollar debt and we still have two years of this insanity left. What are my grand children going to do? How many people have to die to satisfy the greed of the neocons and thier followers. Are the followers so stupid or so mean that they enjoy seeing other people suffering and dying to fulfill the dreams of a bunch of deranged, extremely greedy people that need to be locked away from the rest of humanity for humanities sake.

August 11th, 2006 at 10:52 am[...] Oh for the love of…somebody tell this guy to shut up. A former Rove deputy has attacked Rep. Murtha with a retracted story. The newspapers admitted they made a mistake, yet still these GOP idiots cling to their stupid lies. [...]
August 11th, 2006 at 11:18 amThe last six years have been the worst for the planet in every possible way. terror, wars, death, destruction the list of mayhem bushco has either wrought or allowed is mind-boggling.
There can be no end to this as long as the neocons are supported by the MSM corporate bosses who call the shots with regard to what gets reported and with what spin.
For instance, how did something so minor and immaterial to governance as a hoarse yowl by Howard Dean doom his candidacy??
Because CNN et al played the loop ad nauseum, imprinting an unflattering picture of Dean, which successfully turned off possible supporters.....That COULD NOT, AND WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DONE BY AN HONEST MEDIA!!!
And where were the too numerous to list stories of bush's idiotic ramblings???
The point is, Without honest media nothing the Dems do or say will make any difference, and that is where the Dems money and effort should go....buy tv and radio stations, newspapers and magazines with the same energy as the conservatives have done, otherwise all will be lost in '06, '08, .....
August 11th, 2006 at 11:47 amYou are right, they ARE scared and using all they can to try to smear Murtha. Unfortunately, it sometimes works. There is a also a Republican funded swiftboat camgaign against murtha. It doesn't seem to be working, however, only to more fully anger those they wanted to crush (hmmmm...sounds like an analogy for the war!!!)
Please don't be only internet activists, donate to these folks you like, try to talk to people, etc. Yes, it's harder, but our power is in numbers. E pluribus unum, (out of many one) Don't let nickle-millionaires, religious moderates, etc. think that the Republicans are out for them. We can get them if we focus and work. (As long as they don't tamper with the voting machines and process, which is a conspiracy theory) Viva la Resistance' !!!!
August 11th, 2006 at 12:14 pmWAIT!!!!! I just thought of this....Can Murtha sue for Libel!!!!!??????
August 11th, 2006 at 12:15 pmWho has a copy of this email?
August 11th, 2006 at 12:16 pmUnbelievable! There is all this important Sh*@ going on in the world and you are all worried about Lieberman, Hillary and "BushCo". No wonder the Muslim world thinks that jihad will be a piece of cake against us. They obviously have been reading this blog populated by all of you 'modernists' and 'intellectuals' and the 'HuffingtonPost' that is populated by airheads. Would be nice if everyone would pull their heads out of their asses and try to see the real problem.... Islamic Fascists are the problem, not US policy, not the fictional 'BushCo' and certainly not the fact that one of your Democrats tried to actually be reasonable.
They hate us because we are not of their religion and their religion mandates that they either have to convert us, control us through Sharia or they have to kill us. Religion of peace my ass!
You people eat your own (Lieberman) and evidently have been taken over by the whacked out left. You're more interested in what the Hollywood set is doing or who is protesting Bush with fake hunger strikes than the fact that jihad is going to bite you in the ass. For the record, I don't like the Pres. either. He's not nearly conservative enough on illegal aliens and fiscal issues and he's still out in left field on the war on terror - he's not tough enough and is pulling too many punches.
Last comment: Your opinions are suicidal and also naive and childish. This is even more obvious by the fact that most of you are unable even to SPELL correctly. Where are the FDR Democrats??? I would join in a second but can not stomach what the present day Democratic party has become.
August 11th, 2006 at 12:21 pmFDR > go to RedState.com to spew your rancid diatribe baloney!
August 11th, 2006 at 12:35 pmListen up, Democrats in Congress/Senate.
When Mellonhead (or Turd-Blossom [Rove] or any other Republican talking head) attacks Murtha (or any other Democrat), go into this creeps past and attack right back but do it nationwide; have every Democrat elected representative, local grass roots organization, official Democratic Re-Election committee, et cetera, contact their news organizations with that information, and keep hammering on it.
One area that comes to mind are these Republican cowards' non-military service to America.
The point is, the Democrats need to hire investigators to dig up (legitimate) shit on these bastards and expose them for what they really are, "cow-pie".
If we don't start fighting fire, with fire, we're in for a possibly disappointing outcome, come November.
Got Balls?
August 11th, 2006 at 12:46 pmATTENTION!!!
Dems had better get out sh*t in order. These guys (Repugs) will use terror and everything else to scare the bejesus out of the general public and have welfare mothers voting Repuglican. Have backbone Dems, tell us how the ‘War on Terror’ is real and important but ‘IRAQ’ is a failed policy that helps no one.

Here's your answer:
“I commend British authorities for their excellent work in intercepting a plot to take down U.S. and British airplanes en route from the U.K. to America. Today’s events make evident that al Qaeda still poses a grave threat to our airways and our way of life, and we must devote adequate attention and resources to fighting the war on terrorism.
“A similar plot, hatched by Ramsey Usef, to take down airplanes over the Pacific Ocean with liquid explosives was thwarted ten years ago. Our aviation system was attacked by al Qaeda five years ago on September 11. The 9/11 Commission recommended improving security screening to detect explosives at the checkpoint four years ago. And knowing of al Qadea’s affinity for repeating patterns like this, we have had ample reason to screen for these threats. It’s time for a new direction in homeland security which includes next generation technologies at our airport screening checkpoints that detect liquid explosives and plastic explosives.
“It’s also time to assess how much progress we’ve made in the war on terrorism. With resources diverted to an ongoing civil war in Iraq, Osama bin Laden still at large, a nuclear arms race in Iran and North Korea, the Taliban regaining strength in Afghanistan and escalating violence in the Middle East, are we safer than we were five years ago?â€

Not bad!!
August 11th, 2006 at 12:46 pmActually FDR, we are quite aware that there are terrorists in the world. We would like to see intelligent, well run operations designed to catch and imprison them before they kill. You want to continue the madness in Iraq which, thanks to the complete incompetence of the Bush administration, has become a terrorist manufacturing center.
You want more neocon 'New Mideast" crazy thinking. We want to stop terrorists. We will not only win this election, but the neocon war-lovers are going to be firmly spanked and put in their places, safe in wacko think tanks where they can convince each other that they almost won in Iraq and they really should rule the world.
August 11th, 2006 at 12:55 pmFDR > I knew it was only a matter of time before one (or more) of Limbaugh's ditto-heads would come slithering in to show us his/her ignorance. This person would have been at the forefront of imprisoning Japanese-Americans after Pearl Harbor. History teaches you snakes nothing.
August 11th, 2006 at 1:02 pmI guess if we follow argument, FDR, we need to systematically eliminate all of the Muslim world to be safe. I think this type of argument was already used in recent history, albeit more eloquently, by someone, I think his name was Hitler. (I think I spelled that correctly.) Were these Muslim folks just created in the last few years? Why didn't they want to kill us centuries ago? Oh, wait, that was us the other way around...it was called the crusades.
I am not sure what you meant by "Fascists" so I double checked on its definition (from Widipedia): "Fascism is also typified by totalitarian attempts to impose state control over all aspects of life: political, social, cultural, and economic. The fascist state regulates and controls (as opposed to nationalizing) the means of production. Fascism exalts the nation, state, or race as superior to the individuals, institutions, or groups composing it. Fascism uses explicit populist rhetoric; calls for a heroic mass effort to restore past greatness; and demands loyalty to a single leader, often to the point of a cult of personality.
Boy that doesn't sound at all like Rebuplican rhetoric to me, (that was sarcasm, feel free to look that up.)
Maybe the logical continuance of your argument should include punishment those who gave these "fascists" the weapons, I guess we would just have to bomb ourselves.
And by this so-called "freedom", about which we have been rhetorically told we have been offering Iraq (which I see they have so affably accepted), include the right to eventually vote for who they want? OR does this freedom only include the freedom for the Iraqis to do what we say and vote for who we want? I honestly don't think the Iraqi people would have put foreign oil interests in their own constitution!
You cannot seriously fault people for being more than a little dismayed and angry that their administration had sorta sold them a lemon with this war. The blame for 9/11...turns out to be not true...WMD....not true, (other than the remnants of the stuff we gave him, which I hear has been now looted under our watch).. things are going well...not true....oil and coalition will pay for all of this...not true (I don't think Latvia has 200 billion dollars to spare.) I think it is our DUTY as citizens to ask questions and to expect straight answers. And you wonder why we are pissed?
Further. regarding the thread, I don't see what this has to do with RNC using a retracted misquote in marketing materials? Do you really want this type of leadership?
I think this adminstration (and its blind followers) better be careful what (they say) they wish for (i.e, freedom), and how they go about getting it.
You may check my spelling if you would like.
August 11th, 2006 at 1:15 pmI forgot to add that smearing former soldiers is really "supporting the troops"-- Republican style.
August 11th, 2006 at 1:22 pmBien Dicho! chiccaD :)

What about the Fascists in the Administration?????
August 11th, 2006 at 2:16 pmBushCo has done nothing but hoist themselves on their own pitard. Nothing emanating from their mouths is ever the truth and Dubya's good buddies will all be doing time in the "big house" - they say the true mettle of a man can be ascertained by the company he keeps"....I agree wholeheartedly....just take a good look around those surrounding Dubya - liars, crooks, thieves, and Neo-"Con"Men. Bush has lied repeatedly to the american people and there is an impeachment move afoot. Let's save this country from it becoming just another of Dubya's "failed business projects". Let's face it: He stole the election in 2000 in Florida (hey, brother and Sister Harris!!) and then again in 2004 with the help of his corrupt buddies at Deibold. Wake up americans.
Today I was elated to see that the Mexican people have a higher level of accountability, spiritual calibration, and intelligence than we do - they've effectively shut down their government unless & until they give the people what they want and any election justly deserves: a legitimate recount or another election! They have more guts than we do, I'll grant them that!
August 11th, 2006 at 2:22 pmOne has to wonder why Mehlman hasn't been asked to retract his statement as well.
August 11th, 2006 at 2:44 pmThis guy is as stupid as he looks
August 11th, 2006 at 4:20 pmKen Melhman is a turd.
August 11th, 2006 at 4:23 pmWhy would anyone even begin to listen to this lying piece of crap. He lied about his sexual preferences and lies whenever he thinks it will help the illegal cause.
August 11th, 2006 at 4:29 pmI don't care that he's gay but he should at least be honest with the moral majority in the Republican party when someoone ask him a legimate question about his sexual preferences. If he lies about that, he will lie about anything. We are registered Republicans and will never vote for a Republican again. The party has been taken over by a group of neo fascist theocrats and does not represent the real Republicans that believe in NO DEFICIT SPENDING and small government. True conservatives would never support this kind of government.
Desperation breeds desperate acts. Repubs are sesning the end, they are tossing out salvos all over the place to see if any work. Murtha was not harmed by first swiftboat attempt he won't be harmed after this one either.
August 11th, 2006 at 5:38 pmMurtha is a true patriot! ....a dying breed in Washington these days!
August 11th, 2006 at 6:55 pmAnother Chickenhawk soars!
August 11th, 2006 at 7:00 pm"Unfortunately we will hear the voices of the Gay turncoat Jew Ken Mehlman to smear Democrats until November. We will also hear Tony Snow as well."
Nice, just what I expected here. You should all get a life. We beat the crap out of Bush when he screws up. ( pretty often lately) You all seem to follow the "Kool aid". Get some independant lives and think for yourselves. Maybe you should look at who is funding your side. That scares the crap out of me and a lot of "middle Americans".
August 11th, 2006 at 7:57 pmTERROR FEAR TERROR FEAR TERROR FEAR TERROR FEAR TERROR FEAR
August 12th, 2006 at 6:00 amI hereby award Ken Mehlman with the title of Ugliest Republican in America for 2006!
August 12th, 2006 at 7:44 amI get so sick and tired of hearing Repukelicans say, "We're fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here." That is so lame I can't believe anyone would fall for it.
August 12th, 2006 at 9:04 amFirst, the terroist do not have a standing army, navy, air force or any other regulated fighting force.
How in hell would they get here en' masse to fight in our streets.
Does anyone really believe that they could get their ass over here in such numbers (without our knowing about it, and stop them before they got here) that we would have to throw everythng we have at them in order to defeat them?
Truth is, before George "flat earth" Bush invaded Iraq there were damn few terroist. Some believe a faction of less than 100 crazy Muslims. It makes sense. Look at the terror two idiots did to Washington D. C. a while back. Two people paralized a city. It does not take too many crazy assed Muslims to do great damage.
Bush is using the "fight them there instead of here" mantra for political gain. The only so called terroist now are regular folk who are fighting to get their country back; they are not terroists.
Congratulations to the insurgents another milestone acheived , once again well done. 2,600 members of the U.S. military have died actually 2601 , welldone keep up the good work
August 12th, 2006 at 11:08 amI hereby award Ken Mehlman with the title of Ugliest Republican in America for 2006!

To Jay R.,
August 12th, 2006 at 11:43 pmWhenever I see Mehlman on TV, I think "Can there be anyone more repulsive?" But just then, he will be followed by someone like Dickhead Cheney or Bile Frist.
November Predictions:
Another Al Qaeda Attack
Another Bin Laden Video
Another Rigged Election
Another Republican Sponsored Supreme Court Decision
