ThinkFast: August 10, 2006

Red: The security alert level “for commercial flights [to the United States] originating in the United Kingdom.” The move to the highest level of alert was made after “Britain said it had foiled a plot to blow up flights to the United States.” All other commercial flights to or from the United States will operate under orange (”high”).

New Orleans still struggling after Katrina. One big problem is affordable housing, after thousands of now-useless houses have been destroyed. Other problems include “a lack of public transportation, child-care services and hospitals.” More details in a report by the Brookings Institution.

The Department of Transportation announced yesterday a “U.S. government computer loaded with approximately 133,000 drivers’ and pilots’ records – including Social Security numbers – was stolen last month.”

A neocon cuts and runs. Prominent neoconservative Max Boot, writing in the Los Angeles Times, suggests “reducing U.S. forces from today’s level of 130,000 to under 50,000 and changing their focus from conducting combat operations to assisting Iraqi forces.”

$14.6 billion. China’s trade surplus with the United States in July, its highest ever. The number is “raising doubts as to whether any conventional policy measures will be able to significantly reduce the imbalance.”

The “Prince of Darkness” speaks. Joseph Steffen, a former member of the administration of Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlich (R-MD) nicknamed “The Prince of Darkness,” admitted “he teamed with the governor’s appointments office in targeting workers to be terminated and that their political affiliations informed his recommendations.” Steffen’s admission appeared to be at odds with sworn testimony from other members of the Ehrlich administration.

Reports of “harassment and discrimination against Muslims are rising.” According to a new USA Today/Gallup poll, 39 percent of Americans said they “felt at least some prejudice against Muslims” and 22 percent “wouldn’t want Muslims as neighbors.”

Emily Hesaltine, a 20-year-old intern for the Federation of American Scientists, took two months to single-handedly improve the Department of Homeland Security’s preparedness site, Ready.gov. Check out her work at ReallyReady.org.

And finally: Porn star Mary Carey is once again running for California governor against Arnold Schwarzenegger. “I think I’m more serious now,” Carey said. “As you can see I’m dressed more seriously. I’ve got brown in my hair because brunettes are taken more seriously.” Carey plans to “barnstorm across California colleges in a ‘shock the vote’ tour aimed at her core constituency: young men.”

I believe only yesterday I said:

…we can all look forward to another ‘terrorist event’ real soon to get us back into that state of numb, compliant terror that serves the neocons so well.

    And now:

The move to the highest level of alert was made after “Britain said it had foiled a plot to blow up flights to the United States.”

    There it is….ya scared yet?

It’s only a matter of time before this latest ‘assault on our freedoms’ turns out to be big fat hoax like EVERY SINGLE OTHER major terror alert there has been? I give it a month…but by then we’ll be gearing up to invade Iran and Syria, so it’ll be conveniently forgotten, its purpose served.

  3. GSD says:

Even if this is an actual event, how was it solved? With smart bombs, ground invasions, and foreign occupation? Nope, why with good old police work just like the first WTC bombers, Oklahoma City bombers etc.

Why does George W. Bush want to sacrifice US troops overseas when they could be engaging in terrorist hunting right here in America?

To hell with Dick Ceheney too.

Lamont wins. Snow says Lamont´s triumph undermines security. Mmmm…predictable. Lets see. How about the Yankee Stadium now?

They will probably take this into consideration, evaluate the site once more, give a no-bid contract to Halliburton to improve on her work and we will see the finished product in a year and a half after it goes 200% over budget.

  8. madashell says:

My clock radio woke me up to that news…what a bunch of CROCK. And THEN they say HOW they were going to do it….ROVE IS ONE SICK BASTARD.

  9. Vincennes says:

By fighting the terrorists in Iraq, we don’t have to fight them here. But if we’re fighting the terrorists in Iraq, then how come they were gunning for the United States through the UK? Wait I’m confused. Does that mean terrorists don’t know they have to fight in Iraq? Well I guess maybe we need to start a war in the UK to fight terrorists over there.

  10. Regressive says:

So thanks to more Muslims of Middle Eastern descent who all happen to be males, we all have to suffer with air travel? And why again is profiling bad?

  12. Juan C says:

“We think this was an extraordinarily serious plot and we are confident that we’ve prevented and attempt to committee mass murder on an unimaginable scale,” Deputy Commissioner Paul Stephenson said.

Prime Minister Tony Blair, vacationing in the Caribbean, briefed President Bush on the situation overnight, Blair’s office said. There was no immediate public reaction from the White House. Bush is spending a few days at his ranch near Crawford, Texas.

It is the first time the red alert level in the Homeland Security warning system has been invoked, although there have been brief periods in the past when the orange level was applied. Homeland Security defines the red alert as designating a “severe risk of terrorist attacks.”

“We believe that these arrests (in London) have significantly disrupted the threat, but we cannot be sure that the threat has been entirely eliminated or the plot completely thwarted,” said U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. (Priceless, Chertoff)

Chertoff added, however, there was no indication of current plots within the U.S. Numerous flights from U.S. cities to Britain were canceled Thursday morning.

He said the operation was “suggestive of an al-Qaida plot.” (So, lets invade Iran!)

  13. Chase says:

turns out to be big fat hoax

Or, more likely, it was a real threat.

I find it shocking that so many find it so difficult to accept that a motivated contingent of radical, fundamentalist Muslims want nothing more than to inflict death and terror on the West.

    Get a grip people.

I find it shocking that so many find it so difficult to accept that a motivated contingent of radical, fundamentalist Muslims want nothing more than to inflict death and terror on the West.

And which of the threats have been real so far? Where are the trials resulting from all the previous arrests around the orange alerts?

Isn’t it curious that red alert is used for the FIRST TIME as we enter an election season in which the president and his party and his point of view in general are in serious trouble politically, as demonstrated by tuesday’s primary?

  17. dlet says:

39 percent of Americans said they “felt at least some prejudice against Muslims” and 22 percent “wouldn’t want Muslims as neighbors.

    Tan….the new black.

  18. Jules says:

I have read through the article twice but no where was it mentioned that the people captured were men or muslims. The article mentions “international extremists” and only suspisions, not confirmation, of an al Qaida plot.

McVeigh was a WHITE guy. So we should profile muslims why?

  19. Chase says:

#20 – He was in trouble long before Tuesday. Don’t kid yourself.

Is it even reasonable in your mind that, perhaps, the “red alert” is being used because, the threat is actually critical?

Or is there no threat at all? Terrorism is a farce?

  20. PLC (PatrioticLiberalChristian) says:

Intelligence and police work, not military, stopped this alleged plot. I wonder how much more effective in stopping terror we would be if the intelligence community and law enforcement agencies got all the resources that went into the War in Iraq.

  21. midwestblue says:

Must be the official start of the 2006 election season!
Little George grabs the phone and says to Tony blair: “Come ‘ere, Tony! Good boy! Goood, boy….now we need a terrorist plot because that Ned Lamont (I call him “Cable Guy”) won against poor Joe. Can’t have it, wouldn’t be prudent, as my dumb dad used to say.”
So Tony-Boy cooks something up for his master, because Tony is in trouble at home, too. Mission accomplished, and Karl Rove is happy, too.
    The End.

  22. Chase says:

#23 – I heard on CSPAN British authorities identified many of the men arrested as being of Pakistani descent.

  23. Larry Person says:

#25: I would be inclined to believe the threat was real if every orange alert since 9/11/2001 hadn’t turned out to be false, and if the colored threat level system hadn’t been used for poltical purposed, and if the two governments involved in this latest chicken-little event hadn’t flat-out lied about the reasons to invade an innocent unarmed country. Ya see, when you lie, nobody believes you the next time you say something.

  24. Jules says:

Chase – all you need to do is look back to 2004 mand the number of times the terror alert was raised to become skeptical of anything this administration does.

  25. Juan C says:

OK, Chase. Lets say some of them think that.

    1) Who taught them to make bombs, buddy? Hint: It begins with a C…and finishes with a IA.
    2) Right now, a lot of Muslims, fundamentalists or not, are being killed by made-in-US weaponry and by US troops (far worse, they are killing innocents. That inflames my sense of justice, fundamentalist or not).
    3) If the threat is true, the War on Terror (you know the 350 billion dollar war you are paying) is running superb.
    4) All is very suspicious, Chase. Even you know that. THese war hawks are predictable and you should be buying all the gas masks you can and digging your anti-nuclear refuge.

  26. Jules says:

Chase – I thought Pakisatan were our “friends.” You mean to tell me Bushco has managed to gain more enemies for this country to worry about? Now that my friends is the way to fight terror!!

  27. Jules says:

Actually…in #34 I should have said EVEN more enemies as they have already turned most of the world against us.

  29. TripMaster Monkey says:

Open your eyes, Chase. Check out the interesting correlation between events adversely affecting this administration and terror alerts. Then check out just how many of these ‘terrorist incidents’ have been shown to be seriously suspect, if not outright hoaxes.

The administration deliberately ratchets up the fear level every time there’s a situation that might not work in their favor. It’s a tactic straight out of 1984, and it’s working.

Nevertheless the fact that I remain cynical concerning the timing and many do not believe it is not a further crock put together by Rove, reflects the ultimate failure of Dumbya’s war on terra. These folks have lied and spun to us so often that they have no credibility–sort of like the boy who cried wolf. Don’t forget raising the threat level over the objections of Tom Ridge, when he was Sec. of Homeland Security:

The Bush administration periodically put the USA on high alert for terrorist attacks even though then-Homeland Security chief Tom Ridge argued there was only flimsy evidence to justify raising the threat level, Ridge now says.

Ridge, who resigned Feb. 1, said Tuesday that he often disagreed with administration officials who wanted to elevate the threat level to orange, or “high” risk of terrorist attack, but was overruled.

“More often than not we were the least inclined to raise it,” Ridge told reporters. “Sometimes we disagreed with the intelligence assessment. Sometimes we thought even if the intelligence was good, you don’t necessarily put the country on (alert). … There were times when some people were really aggressive about raising it, and we said, ‘For that?’ “

    Source.

  65. I Don't Hate Liberals says:

Why is it that when ever there is a new threat they can never discuss any of the details of it. Then in 2-3 days it’s like the threat never happened…..until the next threat. Perpetual threats without ever revealing any kind of evidence or explanation.

So today there was a press briefing in which Chertoff and Alberto Gonzales announced the threat, which very well may be a significant threat, but when these two SOBs are the messengers of it, it also brings on serious doubts due to the fact that THEY ARE LYING, BUMBLING SCUMBAGS.

Didn’t we do away with those terror threat color charts?? Looks like they are back, there is an election coming up after all.

I wonder if Al Qaida timed their plot to coincide with the LeMont win over the Republicrat Joe Lieberman.

The objest right now is to get out the vote and change the leadership in congress.

That, in my opinion, is the best thing we can do right now and that is what I’m focusing on.

But again, I thought all the terrorists were supposed to be in Iraq (or Labanon) – didn’t these people get the memo: “Get over there, so we can fight you there – don’t stay here”. I agree with the person above who said that this appears to be police work and nothing to do with how many precision guided bombs you can lob at a vllage.

All of their ‘false alarms’ have created this tendency to be skeptical when an event like this occurs. And now air travelers will be subjected to more stupid restrictions of what they can ‘carry’ onto the planes. This time it is basically anything ‘wet’ or ‘moist’. Brilliant. If BushCo had been putting proper baggage screening devices in all of the airports, a short trip down a conveyer belt would make all of the extreme overreaction to come, unneeded. But better security would make it harder to scare people when you needed to. BushCo is the biggest Terrorist organization of them all.

And for anyone who thinks Bush/Cheney’s failed plan of “Fighting them over there so they won’t attack us here” is a legitimate plan, why don’t you ask them when we will see results? They will tell you “this is a war with no end in sight,” only because they have no real plan

Their plan is a theory that military hegemony is the only way to eliminate terrorism, and their own reporting on global terrorism shows they have increased the threat exponentially.

They have no grasp of history or the reality on the ground, and their failed theories ae making the threat worse.

Let me suggest 5 ways to begin a new direction in neutralizing the terrorist threat:

    1) ENFORCE separation between Israel and Palestine. Both countries have shown themselves to be TOTALLY INCAPABLE of handling the situation on their own. Frankly I would have preferred that the US invade the border over there instead of Iraq.

    2) Laugh all you want, but womens’s rights need to be equalized in radical muslim countries. Too many leaders with hot-headed macho ideas is leading to some of this extremism. Their cultures need balance. The first place to start is with OUR ALLIES: Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Honor rapes and honor killings are still tolerated in these countries, and we can not stand for that.

    3) Address the extremism of OUR ALLIES: Saudi Arabia & Pakistan. These 2 countries harbor BY FAR the most terrorists, and their clerics foster extremism against the US

    4) Lead by example. Don’t give the terrorists more reasons to attack us by violating international law. That means something very distasteful to many people, but it takes being an adult to do th right thing: recognize terrorists for what they are, an army fighting for an islamis state (caliphate).

    5) Don’t fall into Bin Laden’s trap by over extending our troops in extended urban conflicts. HE know from Afghanistan that this will hurt us more than them, and Bush/Cheney played right into his hands. These guys still think Vietnam could have been won if “liberals” didn’t “undermine the war effort.”

  98. The Truth about Think Progress says:

    SATAN LIVES IN GEORGE SOROS
    KNOW YOUR ENEMY

The fiction which is interdependency has a prolocutor in the congregation of Moloch. His name is George Soros. No other single person represents the symbol and the substance of Globalism more than this Hungarian-born descendant of Shylock. He is the embodiment of the Merchant from Venice. His public reputation as an astute currency speculator is generous, while his skills as a manipulator and procurer of pain and suffering is shrouded in the footnotes of the financial journals. Claiming to be a philanthropist, his record is literally one of being a patron for indentured enslavement.

His assault on Sterling caused the British empire to shutter. The Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad blamed the American billionaire for nearly ruining Malaysia’s economy with massive currency speculation. And Hard-core Russian nationalists decried as “meddling” his funding of progressive newspapers and institutions in post-Soviet Russia. But his incontrovertible talent does not rest in amassing financial fortunes, it lies in his social agenda.

While it is reported widely that Soros funded groups support increased government spending, tax increases, opposes the death penalty and President Bush’s judicial nominees; it has a far more sinister scheme. In report by Neil Hrab – George Soros’ Social Agenda for America – drug legalization, euthanasia, immigration entitlements and feminism are examined. Mr. Hrab point out that in the book Open Society: Reforming Global Capitalism, Soros wrote that he is: “rather leery of self-appointment, self righteous” international NGO’s. From his own site Soros proudly claims that his foundations are dedicated to building and maintaining the infrastructure and institutions of an open society. They work closely with OSI to develop and implement a range of programs focusing on civil society, education, media, public health, and human rights as well as social, legal, and economic reform. In recent years, OSI and the Soros foundations network have spent more than $400 million annually to support projects in these and other focus areas.

Double standards for an advocate of a permissive, yet regimented globe? If you think he is a friend of humanity, beware of his public attempt to influence his tribe, by insulting their benefactors. Before the Jewish Funders Network, he recently made these remarks: “There is a resurgence of anti-Semitism in Europe. The policies of the Bush administration and the Sharon administration contribute to that,” Soros said. “It´s not specifically anti-Semitism, but it does manifest itself in anti-Semitism as well. I´m critical of those policies.” The inevitable outcry from the usual suspects, just illustrates the orchestrated nature of the Soros effort to rationalize his own social agenda, while deflecting criticism back to his ancestral blood line. Let the Zionist defend their fears, Soros has another George to defeat…

Since President George is busy consummating the relationship with Ariel, Soros must lump both together in order to attack the Bush administration. If it is the life’s mission of Soros to slay the dragon, why is he so bashful? “It would be too immodest for a private person to set himself up against the president,” he said. “But it is, in fact” – he chuckled – “the Soros Doctrine”.

The Scotsman reports: “Mr. Soros invited Democratic strategists to his house in Southampton, including John Podesta, Jeremy Rosner, Bob Boorstin and Carl Pope. They discussed the coming election. Mr. Soros took aside Steve Rosenthal and Ellen Malcolm, the CEO and president of America Coming Together (ACT), who were proposing to mobilise voters in 17 battleground states. Mr. Soros told them he would give them $10 million.

The next morning, his friend Peter Lewis, the chairman of the Progressive Corp, had pledged $10 million to ACT. Rob Glaser, the founder and CEO of RealNetworks, promised $2 million. Rob McKay, president of the McKay Family Foundation, gave $1 million and benefactors Lewis and Dorothy Cullman committed $500,000.

Mr. Soros also promised up to $3 million to Podesta’s new think tank, the Centre for American Progress.”

One need not be a Bush lackey to recognize that Soros is less fearful of Dubya and more motivated to enact his vision for the world. The dilemma that real conservatives have is distinguishing a truthful assessment of Bush and Sharon policies, while recognizing that the alternatives from a radical globalist like Soros are equally distorted. If Soros is correct when he says a “supremacist ideology” guides the White House, what would you call the practices of the archfiend of Free Enterprise? The Soros deception would make Shylock proud. However, where is Antonio?

Shylock: Antonio is a good man.

Bassanio: Have you heard any imputation to the contrary?

Shylock: Ho no, no, no, no: my meaning in saying he is a good man, is to have you understand that he is sufficient. – The Merchant of Venice [1.3.10-15]

Certainly George Bush has demonstrated his lack of sufficiency. No substitute is on the horizon, only alternatives from the likes of a Soros.

So when the billionaire financier said: “he, too, bears some responsibility for the new anti-Semitism, citing last months speech by Malaysia´s outgoing prime minister, Mahathir Mohammad, who said, “Jews rule the world by proxy”; why should anyone empathize or embrace Soros’ culpability? As is the normal practice, it’s not about anti-Semitism! Mahathir Mohammad was just stating the truth . . . The Soros duplicity is marked with the same betrayal as the framing of the eternal political conflict. The financial desolation that Soros leaves in the wake of his deceitful transactions is the proof. Ignoring this reality does not make it disappear.

Soros wants to drug you so you can’t think, terminate you when you can no longer pay tribute, force you to intermingle with alien invaders and emasculate you to an unnatural equality. If that isn’t the plan of the devil, what else would you call it?

    The Waiting Game
    By Sara Rich

    Thursday 10 August 2006

It has now been 60 traumatic days since my daughter – who signed up with the Army as an MP, and after bravely serving one tour in Iraq, chose to go AWOL rather than engage in the two more tours to Iraq that awaited her – was forcibly taken from our home in handcuffs. Like many soldiers, she was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. What we didn’t know, what she couldn’t tell us, is that she was also suffering military sexual trauma. Late the evening of Sunday June 11, 2006, PFC Suzanne Swift was taken to the county jail, where she was strip-searched and orifice-checked. She was denied medical care for an abscessed tooth until the following day. She sat in that cell for two and a half days, a veteran of Iraq combat, terrified that she may be sent back. Outside, supporters of Suzanne’s plight lined the sidewalks. The mother bear in me rose up – and I swung into action. I am trying to save my daughter’s life.

    (clip)

Our petition to support Suzanne has gone across the country. We reached over 5,000 signatures on Suzanne’s petition. (To sign the petition, go to http://www.suzanneswift.org. Petition signers have added comments; on almost every page there are heartbreaking stories of people who have been sexually abused while doing their best to serve in the military. While abhorrent, it is these testimonies that keep us going, and we thank people for signing on. We are printing out the first 5,000 and sending them to Congress and the Senate. Now we need to shoot for 10,000. We need to show the Army that we are not going away and we not stop fighting for justice. Our web site has new updates and information.

Please link to the story, then PLEASE LINK to AND SIGN HER PETITION.

  105. Democratic Soldier says:

    Earl,

Liquid explosives usually are either binary type (meaning they are mixed with another liquid and the result causes an explosion) or require some type of ignition source (electric spark, fire, blasting cap).

Not sure which type was found by the British.

  106. Democratic Soldier says:

#172 – I correct myself. The report states “A U.S. intelligence official said authorities believe the plot involved sophisticated liquid explosives that were to have been carried on to aircraft, with battery triggers possibly stored in alarm clocks, laptop computers and calculators.

A British police source said the plot was believed to involve a “liquid chemical” device.”

Not sure how they’d get a laptop computer to spark, but I’ve never tried to do it myself. I guess insane people can do some really insane things!

(By the way, I’m still waiting for your response in the Cheney thread….we all are.)

  108. Krazny says:

I was listening to NPR this morning on my drive in. They had a military explosive expert, who said that common household chemicals could be combined to form explosive. He also the mentioned, becuase these compounds are often unstable, that by keeping them apart then mixing right before detenation, it would be safer and easier to get onto the plane. As for detonation, some of these compounds can blow up just by physical jarring. So using a nine volt battery and a couple of wires would not be out of the question.

  109. Joe Sixpack says:

are you irish or british joe? don’t blog and talk at the same time!
    Comment by Earl

Irish. At least I think. I asked my mama once and she said we were “Irish and Dutch and don’t amount to much.” She really said that. She also said not to talk with my mouth full. She never said nothing about blogging, though. Just flogging.

  110. Democratic Soldier says:

#175 – Hey, you were just asking “how do liauid explosives work” and I told you. Why are you biting my head off? Dude, take a chill pill.

As for actually getting the liquid through the gate, I seriously doubt it could be done. Every time I take a plane, they make me take a drink from anything I’ve got in my hands or in my bag. ALWAYS!

I agree that it’s incredibly unlikely that it could ever work, but I’m no superman that can predict every single way they could try. I just don’t think like those kinds of people. If you’re asking questions and you attack the person who answers, then don’t expect anyone to answer you in future.

  111. Krazny says:

I think the worry is, that a shampoo bottle, or contact lens cleaner etc could be used to smuggle explosive onto a plane. If you have 2 or more people in on it, you could amount a fair bit of explosive. Realize also, that an airplane is a pretty delicate machine. An explosion near the wing could ignite fuel tanks, or destabilize the plane enough to bring it down.

  112. Tundra says:

    Earl,

Do a search on maltov cocktail and then think of just how much damage one of those would do to an airplane in flight. Then try really hard to think of ways to get that stuff on board using a couple different people.

If you still contend you need gallons of liquids to pose a threat, well I can’t say much to ya.

  113. Tundra says:

    187,

Ummm no I don’t. Maltov Cocktails do explode. See if you do just a little research on them you will see they can and have taken out tanks in combat situations. I sort of think the inside of a plane in flight is a higher risk than a tank on the ground.

If you are having trouble finding information on that please let me know and I will find you a couple of legitimate links (Completely non partisan on what a maltov cocktail consists of and is capeable of). All in all it requires less than a liter (total) of 3 types of liquid, a rag and an ignition source (Matches would work). Contrary to what you may see on TV there is an explosion and a rapid spread of fire.

  114. Krazny says:

Tundra, don’t waste your time man. I know, and most of the people able to accept facts know, that this presented a serious threat.

  115. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Tundra sez:

Maltov Cocktails do explode. See if you do just a little research on them you will see they can and have taken out tanks in combat situations.

Actually, no. The standard Molotov cocktail does not explode. The use of Molotov cocktails against tanks in combat situations was during WWII. The reason Molotov cocktails were effective was because they could ignite the fuel tanks that WWII-era tanks carried slung under their frames. A Molotov cocktail is a decidedly ineffective weapon against a contemporary tank design.

All in all it requires less than a liter (total) of 3 types of liquid, a rag and an ignition source (Matches would work).

If you’re mixing three different types of liquids, you’ve departed significantly from the original Molotov cocktail design.

  116. Krazny says:

    TM Monkey

it has departed significantly from what is considered a molotov cocktail, but it is still dangerous.

  117. Tundra says:

    TripMaster Monkey,

    Fair enough on all points.

The Maltov Cocktail I was referencing was listed in the Anarchists Cookbook. It involved 1/3 motor oil and the rest can be found easily enough. That being said I agree even that model would be ineffective against a modern tank.

My main point I was trying to get across was that even a total of a pint of that mixture (Which does explode when the fumes get to the proper air/combustable ratio and the flash point hits, usually when the liquid gets thrown during the breakage of the glass) can be devastating to the inside of an airplane in flight. Even a larger plane could be severly effected. If three different bottles were loaded and mixed it would make 3 explosive devices.

But Yes I do concur with your points.

  118. madashell says:

seems to me that Earl is WAY TOO INTERESTED in how to take an airliner down.

  119. Krazny says:

there are a number of other alternatives to things like oil as well. Plus some stuff could just blow a hole in the fuselage, or in extreme cases, and if I was going to try to take down a jumbo jet from the inside with a small amount of explosive, I would sure as shit detonate as close to the wing as possible. At least hope the fuel tank in the wing would ignite, or better scenario the whole wing would come off.

I am confused by the conflicting ideologies in the NeoCon strategy. There seem to be two divergent lines of thought that are foisted upon us constantly. One is that we are all about to be Raptured-up, so we shouldn’t worry about our government robbing us blind & bombing everything on earth, gas prices, global warming, or our ability to pay for mortgages & health care, because we are all gonna be “saved” soon. The other line of NeoCon thought is that we are all apparently going to live, but could be killed any second by “terrorists” so we shouldn’t worry about our government robbing us blind & bombing everything on earth, the upcoming requirement to fly naked on airlines while shiiping our luggage Fed-Ex, or tight governmental control of our actions and words. Other than both philosophies being aimed at trying to influence people to be unconcerned that that are being robbed blind by our government, and to be unconcerned that our government wants to bomb everything on earth, these lines of NeoCon thought are diametrically opposed. So which is it NeoCons, are we going to be saved or be terrorized ?

As the Orwellian dictator in the film “V for Vendetta” screams to his “cabinet” at one point: “I want them to know that they need us.”

Of course, the preservation of chaos was the goal for the rule by tyranny in “V,” as it appears to be in Bushworld.

Terrorist threats may or may not be real. They may or may not be activated as a result of the Busheviks now becoming the motivational cause of terrorists at this point.

We will never know, as long as one-party dictatorship prevails and incompetence and unending war are the means of maintaining power.

But timing is something you can document. And this timing of the latest act of terrorism announcement appears more political than operational.

A senatorial candidate who questions the strategic value of the Iraq War is denounced by the top level of the Bush Administration as an appeaser of terrorists — and then once again there is an arrest of people we are told intended to commit grievous acts of terrorism.

There appears to be a pattern here, and it’s one employed by masters of tyranny, not democracy, to cover up for a failed war and a failed foreign policy.

But the sheeple can only bleat.

Seems to me, if this was such a critical threat, they’d be saying they discovered x amount of chemical explosives. Not saying these weren’t bad people, just that I have serious doubts as to how realistic this plot was.

  134. RealityCheck says:

What are the lessons to be drawn from the major chaos in airports today?

    1) Absolute security means the end of freedom and the end of privacy. How long is it going to be before a decision to fly anywhere means having a required iris scan which will tie into a computer network that will scan your police history, court documents, all internet sites and statements associated with your name, your consumer history from cash register tracking, your credit history, your Google searches, and of course your bank records. Got an outstanding traffic ticket? Kiss your trip good-bye.
    2) The terrorists won. Why? So 24 of their guys get locked up – so what? How many ordinary people will be inconvenienced multiple times because of them? How many billions in productive activity will have been replaced by fear-based security measures? This was a no-lose situation for the terrorists. All they have to do is communicate a “plausible threat” in order to get us to hurt ourselves.
    3) Chronic fear means societal death. You can’t be afraid and be creative too. You can’t grow into your potential if you’re afraid to breathe. Fear of Sparta destroyed classical Greece more than the Spartans ever did. The Athenians did it to themselves.
    4) The conservatives and neo-conservatives won today. They want you to be afraid, because the more afraid you are the more likely you are to vote for them. You are more likely to vote for the loss of your rights and services in the interest of “national security.”
    5) For this reason, conservatives and neo-conservatives need enemies. They need the terrorists to help you stay scared so they can grab more power.
    6) Adaptability is not always a good thing. Americans and travelers all over the world have and will continue to adapt to Big Brother. It’s been said that chronic drunks in the bowery of Manhattan could adapt to drinking anti-freeze and still survive when there was no money for alcohol. Adaptability is not always a good thing.
    7) As you give up more of your freedoms, the fear-mongers of whatever nation, religion, or political party just think of new ways to get you to give up more.
    8) At some point the only sane thing to do is to say, STOP! I’ll take my risks! Stop using my money to build stupid make-work security programs that produce absolutely nothing! If all of us were to fly one less trip a year than we did last year the big money in transportation would lighten security so fast you would think they had found Jesus.
    9) There’s such a thing as cost-benefit ratios. How many people die in auto accidents EVERY DAY in the U.S? Probably more than die in plane crashes world-wide in a YEAR! Apparently the costs of inconvenience, lost time, and loss of privacy do not yet equal, in the minds of the average traveler, the perceived benefits to their security of all this fear-based crap. WAKE UP, SHEEPLE!

The big story of the day is “Kiss your autonomy good-bye.” It’s melting away before your eyes. The land of the free and home of the brave has turned into the land of the enslaved and home of the spineless.

By the way, since we’re dealing with cultural subhumans there might come a time where we might have to nuke Mecca or Medina or some other place to make a point. Or……as the left would rather have us deal with is just deal with the occasional terrorist attack.

We’ll never get rid of “terrorism”, but you have to pick your fights in this world. And it appears that the islamo-fascists only respond to force and welcome appeasement by the leftist in the west.

Of course there is an easy solution to this all – moderate muslims taking charge and putting the smack down on the wahabbi types. Where are they? At the end of this, they will be the ones that lose.

    I like it :)

Raising the size of the government, it’s power or what it controls does not improve the quality of life for the inhabitants. That argument is the exact same one I use whenever a topic about increasing the budget for the government to regulate food/drugs/water/healthcare/education/oil/alcohol is brought up.

  138. Rick says:

    239 – Tundra

And unfortunately, Bush and Co. are following the left into big government (We know what’s best for you, you idiot) model.

  139. Zooey says:

by the way – what are you doing here this time of day???
    Comment by katy

That was posted before I left for work — Pacific Time. Nutty day, eh?

  140. Zooey says:

    Not me.
    Comment by Denny

I should have known right away, actually. ;)
I think it was the “unbelievable” comments that threw me at first.

  141. Zooey says:

    Hey Tundra,

Long time, no see. Welcome back.

Second time I’ve said that today. Hmmm.

i realized that soon after… it just seemed late, even for pacific time – you must live minutes from your work…

it will take me a few days to get up to speed…
now awaiting the phone call to say all is well…

  144. Rick says:

Earl, you would be slightly correct. When will you will you brain dead mental midgets understand that leftistm and what republicans do when they defend every attack on our liberal rights are the same?

The leftist fascists and the rightist fascists are the same.

Earl, I’m not on your side, but when i heard Hannity say “whining about constitutional rights”, then I boot myself onto the moon and contemplate that most americans (most humans on earth) are weak and take everything stalinists feed them

I do! Five minutes, except there’s all kinds of road work on the main roads in town, so now it takes 10 minutes. I love it! I did my time commuting a few years ago — never again.

  146. dwade says:

The terrorists won. Why? So 24 of their guys get locked up – so what? How many ordinary people will be inconvenienced multiple times because of them?

You people scare me more than terrorists. That is for sure.

  147. darby1936 says:

They probably don’t have enough evidence on all the terrorist plots filed in the U.S. and UK to file a jay walking case. We’ll probably see Chertoff’s ugly mug on TV every day until November. This administration is as obvious as a poke in the mouth.

    # 141. Zooey.:

    Thanks anyway.
I’m pretty sure you knew “right away, actually”,that it wasn’t me.
‘Careful where you aim those back-handed comparisons and ‘compliments’.
