Conservatives have “seized on the arrests of terrorism suspects in Britain yesterday to bolster a White House campaign to turn national security issues to their advantage.”
But as White House officials have admitted — and news reports have verified — the Bush administration apparently had little to do with foiling the potential “second September 11.”
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff:
Well, we think the British succeeded in disrupting the plot. And there’s no question the focal point of the operational activity was in Britain. … Now we really took a lot of our cue from them because they had the boots on ground. They had the firsthand knowledge. [8/10/06]
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales:
Today’s announcement is a true testament to the hundreds of hours of patient work by British authorities. [Gonzales, 8/10/06]
Congressional Quarterly:
[Conservative lawmakers] largely praised the administration’s response, although it appeared British authorities had thwarted the plot with minimal involvement by the United States. [8/10/06]
CNN’s Suzanne Malveaux:
[W]e have learned that President Bush first learned about this developing terrorist plot on Sunday. That is when he had a video conference call with Prime Minister Blair. [8/10/06]
The actual White House record is nothing to brag about. The former 9/11 Commission gave the administration “dismal” grades on homeland security in its latest report card, including an “F” for failures to improve aviation security. Commissioner James Thompson, the former governor of Illinois, “warned in particular of the failure to protect against terrorists smuggling a bomb onboard a plane.”
Nice save this helps the lap dog Tony Blair save face. He did it all by himself without the help of the great King George. Blair and Bush have lied so much it doesn’t matter anymore. As for the US not involved well if Bush knew anything he wouldn’t care anyway he’s on vacation with Connie. Remember 9/11 and Katrina Bush looked the other way until the public out cry. I guess Tony Snow forgot to tell us Bush was still reading the book My Pet Goat it’s been a while now.
August 11th, 2006 at 12:55 pm…including an “F†for failures to improve aviation security. Commissioner James Thompson, the former governor of Illinois, “warned in particular of the failure to protect against terrorists smuggling a bomb onboard a plane.â€
But the good news is that Homeland Security and FEMA are now well stocked with water and personal grooming products to meet the needs of victims of the next natural disaster.
August 11th, 2006 at 12:57 pmyou don’t actually believe that shooter and the boob would want to stop something like this do you?
this is just what they want, desperately
this is just like what they arranged the first time.
remember, they knew all about this “investigation” and used it for political purposes to smear Lamont and everyone else, days before it actually happened. what does that tell us?
August 11th, 2006 at 12:58 pmChertoff is an Ass, and it shows.
August 11th, 2006 at 1:00 pmcongratulations to competent British intelligence! Maybe we could outsource some of our terrorist intelligence operations to them?

August 11th, 2006 at 1:08 pmWe might want to take some terror fighting lessons from the UK. Our approach seems overreactive and misguided.
August 11th, 2006 at 1:09 pmWith this week’s revelations regarding the UK terrorist plot to blow up airliners en route the United States, the Conservative Threat Level (CTL) has been raised to Red/Severe (Return to Middle Ages Likely).
August 11th, 2006 at 1:10 pm#6, No – while the British foil a plot to blow up American airplanes, George Bush goes on vacation. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT! The “progressives” would give Bush credit if he ever did anything right.
August 11th, 2006 at 1:10 pmWow. Think Emperor Bush could learn something from the Brits?
Afterall, it took a little police work and didn’t require the invasion of a whole country to achieve certain goals.
August 11th, 2006 at 1:14 pmBush should not get any credit for this.
Why did he wait until thursday to spring this on? The only ones that are hateful is the Nut Wing Republicans.

Do you ever read before you post your blather?
August 11th, 2006 at 1:17 pmBush stayed on vacation for Katrina, Bush allowed 9-11 to happen because he’s incompetant, Bush still hasn’t prosecuted Al Queda for bombing NY 5 years ago, oh but’s let’s give him credit for flying back off vacation to sign a Terry schiavo bill? Give me a break!
August 11th, 2006 at 1:19 pmIf George Bush pulled out a .357 and personally put down an armed barbarian ready to commit mayhem and murder, the situation would end up being reported as a murder suicide of the VP and himself.
August 11th, 2006 at 1:20 pmI do believe MA’s blathering comments are just that blathering and idiotic. I think this anti-humanitarian fool is just biding her time waiting to be raptured.
August 11th, 2006 at 1:21 pmMA – you see what happens when the Administration uses guns, ask Cheney’s lawyer friend. Or was he an “armed barbarian ready to commit mayhem and murder” in the new fascist BS. Do you really want to encourage Chimpy to pick up a loaded gun?
August 11th, 2006 at 1:22 pm[...] The administration has admitted that they had absolutely nothing to do with the British capturing those supposed “liquid terrorists.” I guess that’s why they actually got caught. (ba-dum-ching!) [...]

August 11th, 2006 at 1:25 pmLol the truth comes out that PM Tony Blair revealed this supposed plot to help out his male lover President George W. Bush > will they now admit they did a three way with Jeff Gannon?
August 11th, 2006 at 1:26 pmHe was more interested in listening to the child’s story about the goat rather than worry about what was happening to the towers. So, we had three times the time necessary to accomplish the events. Bin Laden, CNN, Friday, October 29, 2004
“I thought it was going to help,†Bush said in a post-election interview with Sammon about bin Laden’s videotape. “I thought it would help remind people that if bin Laden doesn’t want Bush to be the President, something must be right with Bush.â€
Our President clearly uses Bin Laden as a political tool/ally.
He couldn’t care less about ending terrorism, as his actions and words so clearly illustrate.
August 11th, 2006 at 1:27 pm#18 bones Don’t forget yesterday Bush came to my state of Wisconsin for a private fund raiser for John Gard which is running for REp Mark Green. Mark Green is running for Governor. Green will never win because we don’t need another corrupt Republican that ruined our state.
Governor Doyle is doing a fine job.

August 11th, 2006 at 1:45 pmMA, Bush rides a bike like no President ever has (I understand that he even puts playing cards in the spokes to make it sound tough) and he’s set the record, that he was aiming for when taking office, for most vacation days ever taken by a President. Mission accomplished.
August 11th, 2006 at 1:46 pmOK, so there’s two things we give Georgie positive accolades for, I’m waiting for the thump and then the silence.
August 11th, 2006 at 1:48 pmI consider the rest of this month and all of September to be too dangerous to travel on airliners to anywhere > I do not want to die as a shill to help prop up the Bush Regime! Americans should refuse to travel for the next 2 months > that would scare the crap out of the airline CEOs and they would scream at Bush for ruining their industry! On the other hand more people would drive their cars for travel, which would use more gasoline, so the Oil Cartel CEOs would make even more profits > we the people lose regardless!

I thought we were supposed to send Stryker brigades into the neighborhoods where the terrorists live. Didn’t they pillory John Kerry for advocating a law enforcement approach? Didn’t they say a military response is the only effective course of action? What’s with the mexed missages Mr President?

August 11th, 2006 at 2:02 pmThe funniest part is that Bill O’Rielly has stated that the reason this plot was foiled was because they used the FISA court WITH WARRANTS. So, the arguement of FISA is too slow in blown out the window. FISA worked and it helped stop the latest terrorist plot. Ha ha.
Warrantless wiretapping is illegal and doesn’t help stop terrorist plots any better than doing it the legal way.

August 11th, 2006 at 2:12 pmThe following is from John Conyer’s blog. It sums up everything nicely.
The British Intelligence service, MI-5, deserves heaps of praise for uncovering the plot to bomb airliners departing from London. What is very disturbing, however, is learning that the White House had planned to profit politically from this event well before the arrests were made public.
What kind of an indictment of the American media that we need to look to a French newspaper to report on the details of the White House plan. From the Agence France-Presse [by way of AmericaBlog:
Weighed down by the unpopular war in Iraq, Bush and his aides have tried to shift the national political debate from that conflict to the broader and more popular global war on terrorism ahead of November 7 congressional elections....
His remarks came a day after the White House orchestrated an exceptionally aggressive campaign to tar opposition Democrats as weak on terrorism, knowing what Democrats didn't: News of the plot could soon break.
We learn more of the White House's plans:
[A] senior White House official said that the British government had not launched its raid until well after Cheney held a highly unusual conference call with reporters to attack the Democrats as weak against terrorism….
And still more indications of the motive at play here:
“Weeks before September 11th, this is going to play big,” said another White House official, who also spoke on condition of not being named, adding that some Democratic candidates won’t “look as appealing” under the circumstances.
Why can’t the Republican party put the safety of American citizens first? Why do Republicans first think of political advantage when our nation is at risk? It’s time for leadership that will boldly fight terrorism and bolster our homeland security instead of promoting fear as a political prop.
[from: http://www.conyersblog.us/archives/00000525.htm ]
The Bush Cabal is trying to spin the arrests in the UK to it’s own advantage. The political “momentum” that the MonkeyPalace is trying to generate won’t last the month. By November, it’ll be dead (if he had any political momentum in the first place, that is).
August 11th, 2006 at 2:14 pmNah PJ,
I am so suave and good looking, that a tinfoil hat would mess up my hair.
August 11th, 2006 at 2:15 pmI should have bolded the following:
Why can’t the Republican party put the safety of American citizens first? Why do Republicans first think of political advantage when our nation is at risk? It’s time for leadership that will boldly fight terrorism and bolster our homeland security instead of promoting fear as a political prop.
I would love to hear WingNuts defend against this. Really I would. Their mojo is long gone.
August 11th, 2006 at 2:15 pmSomething positive about Bush… hmm….
August 11th, 2006 at 2:16 pmI know! George W. Bush is a good bad example.
The only people left supporting Bush are those like PJ and MA who simply cannot recalibrate reality based on incoming data. I think these people literally are head cases: they have an open circuit somewhere in their brain.
August 11th, 2006 at 2:18 pmAnother note: Sorry for the inconvenience of traveling on airlines, with dirty teeth, bad breath, greasy hair, body oder, no makeup, etc. > we at Homeland Security Department apologize for making all your lives even more hellish > lol.
August 11th, 2006 at 2:20 pmall should realize by now that less than 1/3 of the country, regardless of party, support bush and the republican policies currently. the only support the guy has currently are the die-hard, violent, and far right fringe wingnuts.
in the political spectrum, leaning too far right perpetuates fascism.
americans dispise fascist so much they fought a world war over the subject. hopefully americans can deal with the remaining bush loyalist as the traitors to the constitution that they are.

August 11th, 2006 at 2:28 pm#72 (and 74) Good find. That’s the message – they’ve been sitting on this for days. Why didn’t they issue the ban on liquids when they first heard about this? Why did they wait 5 days to announce the ban? Because protecting the lives of American passangers is less important than scoring political points. Truly disgusting.

August 11th, 2006 at 2:42 pmLOL, #82
August 11th, 2006 at 2:42 pmI have been saying that very thing for some time now believing that that is the direction in which we are headed.
Everyone will cue up behind a screen, put their clothing in a bag, don a paper hospital gown type of outfit before boarding. Body cavity searches will follow.
Post 82 > can you imagine all the ugly fat men in the nude, and women with sagging breasts > boy you have to hope the person in the next seat is a Playboy bunny centerfold > lol.
August 11th, 2006 at 2:44 pmMarie – I’ve flown a few times since since 9/11, and have learned to already have my jewelry in a bag, I wear sandals so I don’t hold up the line to take off my shoes, I try my best to look as unassuming as possible, and PRAY like hell they don’t pull me out of line to check my check-in baggage. I have still seen people taken out of the check-in counter line, so that the “officials” can rifle through their belongings.
August 11th, 2006 at 2:46 pmB-b-b-b-but the conservabots were crawling all over my Tee-Vee last night telling me the bust was made thanks to all that wire-tapping liberals have been whining about.
They wouldn’t lie to me … would they?
August 11th, 2006 at 2:47 pm.
When the airlines make you wear hospital gowns, with your butt exposed, and you bend over for a cavity search, then I will never fly on a plane ever again > I am glad I have been to Europe already and most of the Caribbean > will I can still go to the islands by boat anyways > lol.
August 11th, 2006 at 2:48 pmwhat I miss, is getting off a flight and having my loved ones right there to greet me as soon as I walk into the terminal from the plane. those days are OVER.
August 11th, 2006 at 2:50 pmand what is even more infuriating is the fact that they CHARGE you $30 to take your children to the gate (if they’re flying alone – like mine have),
August 11th, 2006 at 2:53 pm#85 – Everyone will cue up behind a screen, put their clothing in a bag, don a paper hospital gown type of outfit before boarding. Body cavity searches will follow.
Do not tell suave and good looking Krazny. He’ll get exited.
August 11th, 2006 at 2:54 pmNot really PJ, sadly the average body, is not that fantastic. Now if I was in in line with Hefner and crew then I would get excited.
August 11th, 2006 at 2:57 pmChertoff is in his place today because of his involvement in the Liberty event years ago. He is no more qualified to be Homeland Chief than I am.
August 11th, 2006 at 2:58 pmHS is a failure, an example of Bush&Co incompetence and ineptitude.
This plot was foiled through grunt work, police work, and diligence.
Bush’s method is bomb, kill, destroy everything in their path as they chase their tails, shred the Constitution, instill fear, divide the populace into elites and serfs, and otherwise enact big brother.
Airlines actually never liked dealing with luggage, so expect to fly with absolutely nothing, but your wallet soon > you will be forced to buy clothes and hygiene products at your destination, then throw them in the trash before your return flight > forget the whole damn thing I will only drive my car for vacations, but I suppose they will probably make us drive in the nude too > lol.
August 11th, 2006 at 2:58 pmSuper wealthy people will be given the only right to fly clothed, and with luggage, for much higher priced tickets, but regular Americans > no luggage, no clothes, no personal hygiene products, and no food too > just a can of sour soda is all we will get, plus more cramped seating as well!
August 11th, 2006 at 3:14 pmthey’ve been sitting on this for days. Why didn’t they issue the ban on liquids when they first heard about this? Why did they wait 5 days to announce the ban? Because protecting the lives of American passangers is less important than scoring political points. Truly disgusting.
ToonGuy, I think the dudes plotting the attacks would have been tipped off if the ban occurred before the plot was foiled and thus enabling them to go into hiding.
I think the ban on carryon should have been done long ago and could have been done in a more logical and helpful manner than just out of the blue.
I just thought of something. If you can’t bring carry on lugguge then all the overhead compartments could come down. They could redesign the cabin and perhaps gain some space for us economy flyers. Oh wait, they’ll just cram another row of seats on top! LOL
August 11th, 2006 at 3:20 pmLets just impeach the Hater-Creator and fly wearing and drinking whatever we want.

This is a great Idea!
But we will have to install butt gaket dispensers [As in restrooms] to keep from sitting in the previous passengers skidmarks =)
Way to expensive and messy…Maybe then we should make all passengers strip naked and wear ‘Depends’ so no one has to ever leave their assigned seats?
August 11th, 2006 at 3:28 pmI don’t see why anyone deserves any credit for this. Frankly, British officials knew four months ago that liquid explosives were a potential threat on commercial airlines and did nothing. Why was it okay to bring hair gel and toothpaste on four months ago, when they first had knowledge of this plot but suddenly, yesterday, hair gel and toothpaste are a horrifying threat? And why, if all these products and beverages are a threat, are officals asking passengers to dump everything into the same trash barrel? Mix that many chemicals together without safety precautions and you may end up with an explosion in the airport terminal/

But it is perfectly ok to own our healthcare…
I wonder if you all have forgotten that the UK has some different rules they play by in getting the bad guys… like profiling, no true property rights, sneak and peak, no written constitution, parliament system etc… and ironically they are more liberal over there than you. You didn’t mention the Iraq quagmire. That would not have happened. Also, the $300 billion we spent on Iraq would have gone into renewable energy research. Now imagine what could have come of that. Instead, we have Prudoe Bay and 2,600 dead soldiers.
Also, it’s arguable whether Gore would have taken a month vacation and ignored the massive intel chatter the summer before 9/11.
August 11th, 2006 at 3:51 pmIn short: good police work by Scotland Yard catches crooks, not wasting 1/2 trillion in Iraq.

August 11th, 2006 at 3:55 pmThe only credit Bush gets is for having a discussion with Blair over what Blair should do the night of Lamont’s victory in CT, and then deciding that it would serve Bush Perpetual War fear tactics by raising the rainbow terror alert code for the first time since Bush “won” the 2004 election.
It conveniently distracted the focus of the media everywhere to this lame “threat” in the UK and away from both Lamont’s victory, Lieberman’s defeat, and surprise, a new poll just came out this week with Bush at his lowest approval rating.
But that’s okay. Expect more of the same fearmongering from the Bush White House all the way up to the elections, as the failures in the administration try to scare some voters away from the polls and scare the core republican base back to the polls to help keep the republicans in power in Congress.

Actually, in the mid-90’s it was known that explosives could be made from these innocuous items. A similar plot was foiled in 1996.
And as for dumping items into containers at the terminals yesterday — talk about the potential for a hazardous concoction!

isn’t that utopia? We are all equally capable and motivated to blowing up planes, cafes, synagogues, community centers, schools, israel, buses, embasseys (sp), subways, office buildings, participating or ocndoning violent protests, waving anti bush banners, and burning amercian flags…

How about Operation No War Profiteer Left Behind? That’s a Bush program that’s going swimmingly -as in swimming in tax-payer boodle. Ain’t it a shame that republicans killed the concept of “fiscal conservatism” in six short years?

Gore was a product of Clinton… and if he was of any indication of defending national security, i don’t think it would happen. Besides I do beleive Gore failed out of seminary school? Am I to assume he was a dumbass?
Clinton ignored every sign available during his presidency and he even bombed a country that had a genocidal dictator, was no threat to it’s neighbors, had no WMD, and stated it was a “moral imperative” to stop him all with only a few nations backing and without the UN… then found out intelligence was faulty as to how many were killed… and we still have troops there. Interesting.

August 11th, 2006 at 4:29 pmBushCo spies on us, taps our phones, goes through our banking records, monitors our internet usage, basically totally invades our privacy, anytime they want, without our knowledge, or consent. All in the name of “keeping us safe”, or so they tell us. And when the British foil a terrorist plot, every single American who is travelling by air, is presumed to be a terrorist, cleverly concealing explosives in a juice box, or can of hairspray. Is this BushCo’s way of letting us know that they have blown it again? Have some terrorists managed to elude the eagle eyes of, well, of everyone who was supposed to be watching? Oh, dear. Well I guess we will ALL know in the next few weeks, won’t we? Nah, they will just ‘classify’ anything that would prove that they boo-booed, … again. They could not SUCK anymore if they TRIED!

Our troops are better trained. I do think that the longer US troops are stationed in a high stress, situation like Iraq, that the chances of individuals snapping, and doing something bad increases.

August 11th, 2006 at 5:21 pmYou’re humping the wrong leg their PJ, I have never doubted, that there are Islamic religious extremists, who will kill anyone who does gets in their way. My doubts concern how we have approached the war on terror. A strong unilateral force, to track, arrest, or kill cells, and supporters is necessary in our world if we wish to survive. However hamstringing the army, destroying moral, dumping trillions of dollars into Iraq, and alienating our allies has not made us one iota safer.
This is a war that needs to be fought by intelligence services, police, and other anti-crime units, and using mobile and effective military special ops units. The very nature of your enemy is international, and so should the effort to destroy them.

Just ignore the national debt, it’s not you that will be paying it off, that’ll be the task of your grandkids (unless you’re fixed). Do you think they’ll be happy learning you had their cake – and ate it too? They’ll read about conservatism in their history books and wonder how anyone could have intellectually bought into a dogma so corrupt, so full of internal inconsistencies, and illogic; and that bankrupted the country while bankrolling millionaires – and stuck them with the bill.

I blame Bush for this quagmire we’ve been in since he stole the presidency in 2000, and then again in 2004. Be honest, if it were a Democrat in office and the exact same scenario happened, you’d be denouncing that Democratic President until the cows come home. How do we know that all these security alerts are not just to get public support for Israel and take the cameras of the Lebanon while the war crimes continue.

Is seems a bit convenient that when both Bush and Blair are trying to convince us of how what is happening in Lebanon is justified, that they foil a so called terror attempt. I believe it all to be just a charade to justify what they are allowing to happen.
Tamara Zaky
What are Israel doing in Lebanon today? I find it more than a little convenient for the UK and the US that they should decide to take this action today.
We already know that the police and the Intelligence services are corrupt and incompetent, just look at Forest Gate. I hope that there aren’t quiet news items over the next few weeks saying that these 21 people arrested have been released one by one without charge. Thus fuelling even more hatred and maybe some actual terrorist action. This is a massive PR game and the media, including Sky are soaking it up.
More and More I get the feeling that most of the news is stage managed and not a true reflection of what is actually happening in the world.
Paul Goldsmith
Just heard your female Sky News presenter ask; What triggered the current terror alert?
Probably:
1. MPs revolting against PM before he’s completed his role in the US project to control the Middle East.
2. Israeli attack on Lebanon not going as well as planned.
3. Iraq imploding.
4. Afghanistan uncontrollable.
5. Cover for run up to inciting incident which will give US an excuse to attack Iran.
6. Media complicity in not investigating all of above.
Fortunately not all your viewers are as dozy as you obviously wish they were.

He has bogged down our military to the point that emerging threats, North Korea, and Iran cannot be dealt with.

August 11th, 2006 at 6:58 pmPJ,
You continue to ignore the fact that people can support the global war on terror and not support the “war” (still no declaration) in Iraq. People can support the troops and not the president.
Most people want Osama bin Laden dead. Sending 138,000 troops into Iraq is not how you capture him as proved by the terror plot foiled by the British.

Comment by PJ — August 11, 2006 @
I love this statement, but you are full of bullshit. Man talk about blinders.
August 11th, 2006 at 6:59 pmBush put 138,000 troops in Iraq to capture 4 terrorists over a 3.5 year time frame, not to include the cost to the tax payers, loss of American lives, loss of Iraqi lives and injuries to both American troops and Iraqis. The UK uses “intelligence work” which requires a lot less that 100,000 people, along with some assistance from Pakistan and captures 24 terrorists that were ready to blow up planes. The UK knows how to read memos and how to follow through. Just think, if Bush had read the memo and followed through, 9/11 would be nothing more than a date on a calendar.
August 11th, 2006 at 7:07 pmAll comments by the Bush-loving trolls on this MB bear out the truth in John Dean’s book, “Conservatives Without Conscience.” These posters are classic authoritarian followers, ready at a moment’s notice to swallow any and all bullshit spewed by their Beloved Leader, Man or Monkey, and his puppetmaster, Darth Cheney.
Why don’t you all run for the safety and security of Right-Wing Corporate radio and leave the normal people in peace? Ah, I know why! You love the culture of death and corruption that the Bushites embrace.
You people make me want to vomit.
August 11th, 2006 at 9:25 pmSeveral nights ago (a day or two before the British raids rounding up possible terrorists) my roommate told me that he’d heard someone on Neal Boortz’s radio program state that August 22nd seemed to hold some significance for terrorist groups and that they would “light up the skies with fire.â€
At the time I filed this away as interesting (and thought the “fire†in the skies referred to possible rocket attacks), but it was only after the reports came in from Britain that I began to wonder if someone associated with the Bush administration was “leaking†classified information again.
The quote on Neal Boortz’s radio program sounded awfully like something our intelligence services had intercepted while monitoring some possible terrorist group. And the August 22nd date sounds like part of the terrorist timeline for the planned bombing of trans-Atlantic flights.
Now, I don’t know who this guest was on Boortz’s radio program (from either Monday or Tuesday earlier this week) and my roommate couldn’t remember his name, but I just wonder what this guest knew about this airplane bombing plot and from whom did he get his information?
Because it looks to me like he revealed classified information about an ongoing terrorist investigation, maybe even precipitating the need for the British authorities to act before they were ready.
In other words, apparently this investigation had been going on for about eight months, with the British and Pakistani authorities keeping potential terrorists under surveillance, whlie trying to uncover even more potential terrorists. Apparently, the British and Pakistani counter-terrorism authorities kept the United States out of the loop until this past Sunday, after which the Bush administration started leaking, leaking, leaking.
This disclosure on Neal Boortz’s program, just days before the British raids, seems too much like something staged by the Republicans for political purposes…while once again actually endangering our efforts in the war on terror.
Outing Valerie Plame. Outing the Khan guy over in Pakistan. Downgrading the counter-terrorism office before 9/11. The pattern of criminal negligence on the part of the Republicans and the Bush administration is staggering.
We definitely need a change in direction in America. The Republicans have failed us time and again. Their politicized, incredibly inept policies have actually jeopardized all the children of our great nation. Republicans have placed their party above our Constitution, above our Bill of Rights, above our nation’s security, both domestic and foreign. It is time for a change…before it’s too late.
August 11th, 2006 at 10:16 pmI think what is needed at US airports is separate security checkins for Bush lovers and everybody else! At the Bush lover lines all their luggage would be ripped open, spilled on the ground, then most of it thrown into the trash! Then they would be forced to strip nude for full body cavity searches, then get herded onto the planes like cattle! At their destinations they would be pushed off the jets using cattle prods! GOP fools are scared of terrorists, so treat them like pathetic idiots!
August 12th, 2006 at 3:25 amAin’t it a shame that republicans killed the concept of “fiscal conservatism†in six short years?
Comment by Barfly — August 11, 2006 @ 4:18 pm
i believe you replaced republican with conservative…. it’s ok you confused the two… if you notice there is a difference between a liberal/ progressive (or whatever the name will be come the 2008 election) and a democrat…
I believe you don’t know what you’re talking about. There is no “fiscal republicanism” is there? There are also no differences between “republican values” and “conservative values” are there? The past few years have shown there are no moderate republicans, only conservatives who mouth moderate pieties, and then vote with the rest of the rubberstamps – so your point about the difference between liberals and democrats and the difference between republicans and conservatives is inapt.

August 12th, 2006 at 9:15 amLeave it to the Republicans to capitalize on someone elses work!!! The Bush administration couldn’t uncover a stone let alone a terrorist plot. But they’re always willing to make political hay out of anything to make them look good-which they need all the help they can get!!!!!!!!
August 12th, 2006 at 9:49 amAphrodite and all of you other brainless righties– this article does nothing but tell the truth, which, of course, you can’t stand. The truth does the same thing to conservatives that sunlight does to maggots.
August 12th, 2006 at 10:42 amAm I missing something? Did our leaders know of this latest plot and the types of explosives to be used for at least a week before they took any action? Was the safety of millions of airline passengers was secondary to the completion of the investigation by the British? Now that the plotters have been arrested and the scheme broken up, the actions at the airports are critically needed? However, during the investigation these precautions were unwarranted?
Somehow I just don’t have a “warm and fuzzy” feeling about how safe it is to fly. Apparently it is much more important to get the bad guys before you protect the people.
WHAT ELSE DO THEY KNOW AND AREN’T REACTING TO?
August 12th, 2006 at 11:56 ambush has already failed.

he failed the nation on 911.
August 12th, 2006 at 1:20 pmI read some of the crazy person blogs (Republican) and one was giving an example of how “in danger” we are with the cell phone story in Michigan, yet when I go a read about it, it’s all about this guy that had about 1000 prepaid cell phones in the back of his van that he was going to sell to make money. But then this ultra-frightened, paranoid police chief has them held on “terrorism charges” and the cross-eyed, likely Republican police chief was trying to explain his paraniod delusions: “terrorist use cell phones as detonators”, “terrorists use prepaid cell phones because you can’t track them”
Kind of explains that these Republicans have more paranoid fantasy in their minds than common sense. Just look at the Iraq war, a complete exercise in paranoia. We know who attacked us on 9/11, but let’s attack Iraq instead?
August 12th, 2006 at 11:55 pmIRAQ IS A DISTRACTION FROM THE WAR ON TERROR.
We need to bring our troops home and stop the insurgency, which is only rising because our troops are there. These insurgents are of every stripe, including Iraqis that feel betrayed.
We will be Peacemakers again, and open diplomatic relations with Syria — who reached out to help us after 911.

August 14th, 2006 at 3:11 amThe Bush administration had little to do with this except that they pressured the British to expose this one day after the Lamont-Lieberman primary where Lamont won.
The Bush administration wanted to time the exposure and take credit for it although they had little to do with it to politically assasinate Ned Lamont and the Democratic party on national defense and national security.
I REMIND EVERYONE OF YOU THAT 9-11 attacks and the deaths of 2750 people happened UNDER BUSH’s AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY’s WATCH.
NOW Who appears weak on terror, national defense and national security? THE REPUBLICANS.
Tell this to the press and every swing voter and independent voter you see.
