Sen. Clinton blasts Cheney.

By Nico Pitney on Aug 11th, 2006 at 11:26 am

Sen. Clinton blasts Cheney.

I don’t take anything he says seriously anymore,” Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) said yesterday. “I think that he has been a very counterproductive, even destructive, force in our country and I am very disheartened by the failure of leadership from the president and vice president.”

  1. Krazny says:

Blah I am so disillusioned with Mrs. Clinton, I could care less what she says. I just hope the dems are smart enough not to nominate her in 2008.

  2. madashell says:

What? It took her almost SIX years to figure that out??? WTF – oh yeah, there is an election in November.

  3. The DLC are Frauds says:

Right. And Hagel wants out of Iraq. Blah blah blah…

  4. EasyRider says:

That is the best statement she has made lately.

  5. yankeluh says:

The reason I have given up on Hillary is because for the first four years of Bubbleboys presidency she did NOTHING! She was the only Democrat with national stature and she could have put the breaks on the “moronity” by speaking out and encouraging other Democrats to do the same. She sat there silently and NOW after we have gone to hell in a handbasket she speaks out? Give me a break. She has a lot to make up for.

  6. dlet says:

Took a loss of one of the spineless DLC to light a fire under her. Still don’t trust her.

  7. Anon1 says:

If she keeps this up, I’ll support her.

  8. The DLC are Frauds says:

Here in Texas we had a bumper sticker that was very popular:

If Clinton is the answer it’s a stupid question.

  9. Xbot says:

Surprise! She stopped hairsplitting for a single moment, and here is the result. I thought that she’d start commenting on the terrible smell of Cheney’s cheap calogne, as opposed to his actual vice presidential (really, just self-destructive and stupid) policies. Congrats, now let’s see how far she carries it.

    Awesome.

  10. The DLC are Frauds says:

I will never vote for Clinton. The DLC supported a war they new was wrong and they have to pay.

  11. Realpolitik Dem says:

Say what you want about Hilary. She just may be the best chance for the dems to take the WH. Yes she waited to critisize. By doing so she insulated herself from the right-wing attack dogs that would have swift-boated her. Remember what the political climate was in 2003. Not too many realize now, that if she had started attacking when the Prez still had close to 70% approval ratings, it would have been considered political suicide.

  12. Jebus Loves Me says:

“I think that he has been a very counterproductive, even destructive, force in our country”

Not to mention the whole world

  13. Jason Wilberforce says:

Take what Hillary is saying and flip it on her: “I don’t take anything she says seriously anymore.”

Hillary is just another opportunistic politician who smells the message from Lamont’s victory on Tue. What did Hillary think of Cheney a week, month or even a year ago?

I don’t buy Hillary’s sincerity at all. Everything she does has the footprint of political calculation on it.

  14. DRxJ says:

Ahhhhhh, so Hilary got the message from Michael Moore, eh?

  15. GSD says:

Realpolitik Dem: “Not too many realize now, that if she had started attacking when the Prez still had close to 70% approval ratings, it would have been considered political suicide.”

Or it could have been a stand on principle like Russ Feingold. He ain’t dead.

  16. AustinSF says:

    Go Hillary !

For once you are relevant. Maybe you could encourage more of your DLC Buddies to act more like Democrats as well – it’s refresing.

  17. RUCerious says:

    Here’s an interesting poll…
    FOX News/Opinion Dynamics Poll. Aug. 8-9, 2006. N=900 registered voters nationwide. MoE ± 3.

  18. Yikes says:

Jason, do you buy the sincerity from the Bush Cabal over the last 6 years? What size of shoe would fit the footprint of political calculation that the Bush Cabal wears?

  19. TheToonGuy says:

I don’t care if the dems run a dead monkey for president. Got to be better than anything the neocons come up with.

  20. lw says:

I understand the frustration with Hillary. I have felt pretty much the same way for the past few years.

However, at the same time, I also find it somewhat encouraging when Democrats like Hillary, who have been so stuck on the fence afraid to say anything that might make someone upset, finally start saying the things that need to be said, whether it’s just their newest posture or not. At this point, I am grateful for any sign of progress at all.

  21. Jay Randal says:

VP Dick Cheney is a certified evil man, so I am glad that Sen. Hillary Clinton has finally noticed after almost 6 years > Hillary demand that Dicky resigns or impeach him with Bush!

  22. return of reddog says:

why should we take anything Shrillary says seriously. She and her husband wrote the book on lying and governening by polls . God I hope they run this broad in ‘08!

  23. madashell says:

    he’s baaaaaaackkkkk.

  24. For Truth says:

I’m not too sure about Shillery either. But at least she feels “safe” enough now to speak out against possibly the most destructive man in America.

  25. DRxJ says:

Return of Reddog (aka I Hate Liberals)…done any good gay bashing lately. Made any homophobic remarks about pistol whipping gay boys to death (as you so proudly proclaimed a week ago thursday)?

Everytime I’m here, and I see your name, I will remind you of your bigoted attitude.
    Have a wonderful day!

  26. kindness says:

Oops….Sounds like Hillary read the Times yesterday and saw that Lamont won…

    Cover your ass girl.

  27. kindness says:

Oh yea, lying about consentual adultery is so much worse than spying on all americans without warrants. So much worse than allowing Enron to drive states and communities to bankrupcies. So much worse than blabbering idiots like reddog. Duuude…..

  28. Steve53 says:

She’s just your typical politician.Too bad.

  29. ohdave says:

    WOW!

I don’t care what anyone says about Hillary. This is a perfect statement Re: Cheney. Excellent.

  30. freeman says:

BOYCOT EXXON NOW ,vote democrat in November ,whoever they run.Politicians are rarely honest and principalled.Where’s Cincinatus when you need him ?

  31. Capt. Obvious says:

#22 – ” She and her husband wrote the book on lying and governening by polls”

Your boys in the WH must have thoroughly studied the section on lying.

Regarding your slur about “governing by polls”, I’d just like to point out how stupid that argument is. Id suggest looking up the definition of republic – “A state or nation in which the supreme power rests in its voting citizens and is exercised by representatives elected by them and responsible to them”.

I know there are some big words in there, so I’ll break it down: a synonym (another word for) republic is “representative democracy”. The politicians “represent the will of the people”. Since politicians are (normally) held accountable to the voters, if they are not representing the “will of the people”, the voters will elect someone else who will.

  32. Krazny says:

I think that the Clinton’s actually studied from the corrupt nixon administration, and Lee Atwater. but you can put whatever spin you want on it.

  34. madashell says:

“Never has so much military and economic and diplomatic power been used so ineffectively, and if after all of this time, and all of this sacrifice, and all of this support, there is still no end in sight, then I say the time has come for the American people to turn to new leadership not tied to the mistakes and policies of the past.”

    Richard M. Nixon

  35. onthefence says:

I’m sorry but she is unelectable so you folks who are thinking of supporting her are leading us down a dark path. There are too many people that despise her and while I think she might do a good job(her and Bill as a team) there’s just no chance. Maybe as the VP but not as POTUS.

My vote is with Feingold if he ends up running.

  36. Ed says:

I’m glad to see Hillary finally growing some backbone and taking on the administration. For me it’s a case of “too little, too late,” so I doubt I’ll support her in the presidential primaries, but it’s good to see Democrats uniting in opposition to the Bush administration and its failed policies. I do think that Lamont’s victory sent a clear signal to DLC folks that this is what we expect.

  37. Louis says:

I agree that Hillary Clinton’s remarks are spot-on regarding Cheney, and hope that it is an indication that she has begun to wake up. Last year I received two “citizen surveys” from her organization asking what are the most important issues facing our nation. The survey questions were very good, but there was no mention of Iraq in the entire survey! I just find that outrageous. Is her recent change of attitude a matter of too little, too late?

  38. Republican says:

Wow, for once the people on the left and myself agree on something. Hillary is a news-whore, totally unworthy of the office she holds now, and wholly unfit for presidential service too.

  39. Inkadinkadont says:

Oh Hillary realizes this NOW? Where has she been for the last six years? I mean, honestly, how many times can someone allow themselves to be trampled over and convinced to make decisions against their own best interests and the interests of an entire country, before realizing she’s been had?

Six years after the fact, the majority of the citizens of this country already know Cheney can’t be trusted, his disapproval rating is around 80+%, and now Hillary wants to join the bandwagon.

Well, it’s nice and all, but there’s a saying, too little, too late.

  40. tablogloid says:

It is not too little too late. Timing is everything in politics as implied by #11’s comment. The timing is perfect now. Right to go after the repub leadership. Most folks have had enough and its time they got a little bitch slapping. Sorry, make that a lot of bitch lapping.

  41. bones says:

The news reports Hillary attacks Cheney statements, when it should read: Why the hell does a guy with less than a 19% approval rating think he can open his mouth about anything?

  42. km4 says:

Hey at least give her credit for going on the attack now against the GOP pondscum prevaricators when it counts most so the Dems can win in Nov and take back House, Senate, or perhaps both.

Then in 2008 it’s going to be Wes Clark as Pres.

  43. Cyra Brown says:

Hillary, for all of her faults, showed she was “man” enough to say something, anything, regarding the Dick, while all of the ‘men’ in Congress remain silent. Works for me.

  44. Spudge_Boy says:

The only bashing of fags I have dome has been metaphorically you moron.

Yeah, because there is no gay bashing in that statement.

  45. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

“BALLS!” cried the Queen. “If I had balls, I’d be King!”

Hillary never stood up to the Bush Cabal. Why should we start believing her feints and snarks now?

  46. Civil War That says:

Cheney has to be the most divisive, hateful VP since Agnew. At least the latter is dead.

  47. bo says:

At least the triangularion is swinging west.

Now if she will have the guts to publicly question Chicken Caesar’s sanity, we’ll be getting somewhere.

  48. bo says:

    triangulation – damn finners.

  49. Dignam says:

    Is Hillary’s backbone a fixed-term lease or a rent-to-own?

  50. Craig Vickstrom says:

If Hillary is the nominee, I will consider voting Replublican. I cut my teeth working for Paul SImon’s campaign in 88. I have never voted Republican.

  51. Ben says:

    Is Hillary’s backbone a fixed-term lease or a rent-to-own?

It’s neither, she doesn’t have one.

  52. ronjazz says:

A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step. Lamont’s victory was a giant step, Hillary’s statement is a small step in the right direction. Republican, above, projects the abject failure of the Cheney Crime Syndicate perfectly. Bush-Cheney are newswhores, proven unfit for office of any sort, and without stealing the ‘00 election, would not be holding high office. Throwing them out via impeachmetn would be another step in the right direction, but any step in the right direction is a plus. Hillary’s no-nonsense grilling of Rumsfeld, followed by this no-nonsense statement, may not earn her any votes, but they are perfectly timed and executed. any defense of the current regime is based on character flaws and ignorance. anyone who still claims to be a Republican is a sad example of a citizen of a free country who no longer cares about freedom. Remarks like those of David Brooks in today’s NYT claiming that voters have no right to vote their hearts, and Cheny’s accusations of treason against 63% of the American public, are the true face of the fascist Republican party, the last vestige of tyrants and haters.

  53. JeffCO says:

The reason I have given up on Hillary is because for the first four years of Bubbleboys presidency she did NOTHING!

So point me to a Dem of national, presidential stature who *did* speak out and try to do something then. IMO that just isn’t a useful argument anymore. Reward good behavior, punish bad behavior. And to the Dems claiming they could vote for a Republican over Hillary – maybe you’ll be lucky and Nader will run again.

  54. The DLC are Frauds says:

Biden said something similar last month. Cheney’s a “safe target” for the Democrats.
Bashing Cheney is no substitute for oversight. Cheney belongs in shackles.

  55. Scoopernicus says:

Here in Texas we had a bumper sticker that was very popular:

  57. Craig Vickstrom says:

There exist two sides in American politics: the pro-corporate and the anti-corporate. Multinational corporations are the single greatest threat to human freedom and dignity; religious fundamentalism is number two. Hillary serves the corporations, just like Bush and Cheney. Voting for Hillary is no different than voting for BushCo.

  58. DLC=Democrats Lose Congress says:

    JeffCo,

How about Feingold, Gore, Dean, and Kennedy? Did you read Byrd’s speech before the war? Maybe you need to pay more attention.

  59. kindness says:

Hillary wouldn’t be my first or second choice for POTUS. But I’d vote for her over anyone the Republithugs have out there now.

I like Colbert’s term: Thatchers….Hillary has a set of Thatchers.

  60. Jake says:

As for Hillary, “I don’t take anything she says seriously.”

  61. jasonm says:

I certainly agree with Clinton about this, but it is hard at this point to see anything she says as anything other than the result of some political calculation. Still, I’m glad she said it.

As for her running for president, I can’t see her really having a chance of winning. For one thing, I think too many Americans still just aren’t ready to vote for a woman for President. All signs indicate she’d get creamed by McCain. (Yes, I consulted my Magic 8-Ball.)

  62. madashell says:

I would vote for Kucinich – but the name alone would turn people off. Sad, but true.

  63. gq says:

Actually, if you go back and take a look at what Democrats were saying in the run up to the war, they weren’t exactly quiet. There was essentially complete agreement that we shouldn’t rush to war.

It is funny that the left hates the Clintons more than the right.

  64. Marie says:

Darth Cheney’s words have been proven false, inflammatory, and disingenuous so often that nothing he says is worth while listening to, much less repeating on TV.
He is a liar, a man always looking out for #1.
What took Hillary so long to figure this out? Hmmm, could it be that Lieberman’s loss has scared her into slowly backing away from Bush&Co.

    Madashell,
The more I know of Kucinich, the more I like him and his ideas, but you are correct when you say he could never win. I took a survey once on my political/social leanings and found that my position on most everything was closely associated with his.

  65. Kevin Lyda says:

I’ve seen a few comments saying that Hillary’s inaction the past several years isolates her from attack.

    Wake up.

If Mother Teresa was still alive and could and running for any office in America as a Democrat, the GOP attack machine would blast her for her accent and question her faith.

Any strategy that depends on avoiding being attacked by the GOP is VERY VERY VERY STUPID. Any strategy that seeks to minimised attacks is equally stupid.

So wake up. Hillary Clinton could personally suit up, fly to Afghanistan and capture Osama Bin Laden with her bare hands and drop kick his head onto the White House lawn and Rush Limbaugh would report it as proof that she’s in league with Al Qaeda and her viciousness proves she played a role in Vince Foster’s death.

If you support any candidate because the GOP won’t attack them, you’re being stupid. If you oppose any candidate because the GOP will attack them, you’re an idiot.

There are loads of good reasons to support or oppose Hillary Clinton. Pick one of those. The GOP will attack every Democrat running for office, so don’t delude yourself.

  66. ann says:

Wow. Something that I can actually agree with Hillary on. I still don’t want her to be the Dem candidate in 2008, but she can stay in the Senate if she keeps talking this way.

  67. OxyCon says:

Allow me to finish the quote, if you will.
“The only thing Cheney is good for these days is raising money for a lost cause. Every ten days, they dig him out of his bunker’s hyperbaric chamber, fill him with bile, and let him spew his lies in front of a crowd of filthy rich right wing ideologues.”

  68. Gay Bear says:

Return of Reddog previously has posted his neo-nazi rantings as Chris, Reddog, Moonbat Patrol, I Hate Liberals, and now Return of Reddog. This bigoted thing cannot be taken seriously.

Hillary speaks up. Better late than never. The fact that she does so today, to my mind, opens the door for others to jump on the bandwagon and get this party started. I don’t care that it’s an election year. I care that it’s about time Dems and others who take issue with this administration start speaking up. It’s now or never. And “never” would mean very bad news for the United States and the world.

  69. Fred F. says:

To all the naysayers up there, what, you’d rather her NOT say this? Who cares if she should have siad it 4 years ago, she’s aying it now and she’s one of the few Dems the media actually will push above the clutter so all of us can hear it. I say good for her and keep on saying it.

  70. Craig Vickstrom says:

She can say all she wants. She’s been MIA for 6 years. The fact that she says it now is irrelevant. It means nothing. It’s like Benedict Arnold denouncing the British AFTER he betrayed us in the war.

  71. Phil Vitale says:

I can understand how so many feel very pissed at Hillary. I often feel the same thing when I hear her speak, but support her in her attack on the WH and Cheney & Rumsfeld especially. These guys are scum, total scum and it’s time that someone who has her name recognition say so. . . .

  72. Zippy the Other Pinhead says:

Here in Texas we had a bumper sticker that was very popular:

If Clinton is the answer it’s a stupid question.

Comment by The DLC are Frauds — August 11, 2006 @ 11:33 am

Here in Virginia, I have an analogous bumper sticker on my car:

Somewhere in Texas, there’s a village missing an idiot

Hmmm…maybe that should read two idiots, DLC…

  73. realitycheck says:

Hillary is trying to appeal to the moderates of both parties. That’s who Bill appealed to when he was elected. I love Russ, but he probably won’t be president anytime soon. If we want to take the WH, then the candidate must appeal to the center. Hillary was careful not to piss off the center when George was sitting pretty in the polls. Now, it’s safer to come out swinging without turning off the center.

People on this blog may not like it, but if it comes down to Hillary and say, Frist, who are you going to vote for? Time for a reality check, people. I myself like John Edwards, but 2008 is a long way off, and at the end of the day, you’ll have to vote for a Democrat vs. a Republican. If it’s Hillary vs. a Republican neocon jerk, I’ll vote for Hillary.

  74. stumpy says:

Hillary needs to accept that her role is that of the Democratic Senate leader who will replace Ted Kennedy.

  75. Fred F. says:

Edwards is also my pick, at least for someone who has a realistic chance of beating a Republican. Fact is you have to peel off centrists in order to win. Hillary knows those of us on the left will vote for her, she doesn’t have to pander to us at all. So I take her at her word when she clubs Cheney like this. She, like Bill, is always calculating, I’ll give her that, but I see this as more of her being pissed at the administration than a political ploy.

And we can only hope it’s Hillary vs. Frist.

  76. Craig Vickstrom says:

Hillary IS a neocon. She IS a corporatist. She’s DLC, remember? Let them elect her. I’ll vote for Feingold or Dean if Hillary’s the nominee.

  77. Gay Bear says:

In Texas they may have one anti-Clinton bumper sticker to crow about, but in the real world there are dozens of anti-Bush bumper stickers. Check it out: http://www.irregulartimes.com/sbest.html

  78. realitycheck says:

I respect your opinion, but I don’t agree with you. Hillary is not a neocon, and all corporatists are not created equal. If it comes down to the lesser of two evils, then Hillary may be the only choice. And if it’s a Frist like person running against her, what is the choice?

I do agree that Feingold and Dean rock! And hopefully they can appeal to the center enough to be the Dem candidate. But that’s not certain. So, I’ll wait. If Hillary is the choice against a rethuglican neocon, then I’ll vote for Hillary.

  79. jaf says:

She feels that wind blowing in from CT and tries to sail on it. Hillary Clinton is just another pandering hawk scrambling for cover. doesn’t want that Joementum sticking to her.

  80. Rummie's Colon says:

Stop it, for chrissake. Hillary should be commended when she does the right thing. Save the brickbats for when she does the wrong thing. Yes, that would be ‘frequently’. Hillary saying this instead of parroting Cheneyspeak is a GOOD THING.

  81. realitycheck says:

Rummie’s Colon, I agree with you. Kudos.

  82. Scott Mercer says:

    She’s a pollreader, allright.

With all the negative and positive connotations of that.

I’d rather have somebody else, but if she is the Dem nominee, I will vote for her, and I will not do it holding my nose. And we can get the whole “when are we going to have the first female President” question out of the way.

Plus, it’s a gift to future schoolchildren who have to memorize the order of the Presidents: “Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clintion, Bush, Clinton”

  83. DavidK says:

Of course Bush and Dick top the list of contemptible, failed leaders, but I’d lump Hillary and most of the rest of Congress into that disgraced group. Russ Feingold was the only Senator to vote against the resolution authorizing force against Iraq. We’ve been suffering from a lack of leadership on both sides of the aisle. Pot. Kettle. Black.

Now, if you (Hillary, other reformed critics) wish to take some responsibility for the mess we’re in (e.g. “terrorists scared the bejesus out of me, and I made some really stupid decisions”), that’s a good way to get back on the right track. That has to happen before she starts throwing stones. Until then, it’s unacceptible BS.

I smell a dirty great WH TROLL.

  85. JeffCO says:

How about Feingold, Gore, Dean, and Kennedy? Did you read Byrd’s speech before the war? Maybe you need to pay more attention.

I said, specifically, “point me to a Dem of national, presidential stature.” I did not say that other Dems have not occasionally stood in opposition to the Bush administration. Of those you mentioned, who is a viable presidential candidate for 2008? Byrd? Kennedy? I’ve heard nothing from Dean to suggest he would run again, and so far Gore has been coy. Yes, Feingold has been saying many of the right things for some time, and he may run – do you think he’s more electable nationally than Hillary?

BTW, you might consider that it is possible for someone to have a different perspective than you without being uninformed or inattentive.

  86. MS says:

Congratulations to Hilary Clinton for standing up. Who cares if she was the first or second to come to the progressive train as it’s leaving the station?

If it took Lamont’s win in Connecticut to show Clinton that there would be support for a stand-up position, that’s fine with me!

Point is: She DID stand up and say that the emperor (Cheney) has no clothes on. She was among the first to say she would only support the voters’ nominee in Connecticut, to offer Lamont her endorsement and send him a $5000 check.

She was first loyal to Lieberman, based on their prior relationships and his formal position as Senator from Connecticut. Now that he’s no longer the Democratic Sen. for his state, she’s properly put her attentions to the nominated Connecticut Demo candidate.

Let’s not trash people for coming late. It’s great when they come on board at all. And it’s terrific when they come on board and make strong statements in favor of a political position that I do support.

  87. Craig Vickstrom says:

Hey Taylor, can you refute anything I’ve said? I think you’re taking a page from Rove’s playbook: if you can’t deal with the substance of an argument, call people names. I did leg work for Simon, Clinton (the first time), Dean, and Kerry. I served on a Democratic Party county platform committee when I was 18. What have you done?

Yes, she is the lesser of several evils, but she IS evil. She has been carrying water for this admin since 9/11. Until she undoes all of that, plus sets it to the corporations, she will not have earned my vote.

  88. NYStater says:

Support the statements you like and criticize the ones you don’t. Don’t blame politicians for being politicians. She’s a smart woman and would figure out a way to win if she gets through the primaries and wins the nomination. Her statements may be calculated, but that just may be what it takes to beat the powerful repug media machine. Don’t be naive like some of us were in 2000. That’ll play right into their hands. Ya gotta admit: now’s the time to pounce, and she did.

  89. jasonm says:

Anyone who sees this as Hillary bravely speaking truth to power or some such is falling for it. Cheney is extremely unpopular, and the only people who approve of him are people who are never going to support Hillary under any circumstances. She’s whipping up the base, with no possible downside for her.

Again, though, that doesn’t mean what she said is wrong.

  90. redcabbage salad says:

Until HIllary confronts and addresses her vote on the war, and the continued support of the war, which has now been proven to be a huge mistake, she cannot ever gain the credibility she seeks. She MUST address that vote and NOT spin it and not seek to bury it. Sure she spoke out against Cheney–after all the polls have the evil vice president way down the line. Of course she confronted Rumsfeld and told him to resign–it has been said many times before by others–she jumps in on the safe issues.

Clinton is NOT a leader but a follower playing a game of politics.

I will never ever vote for any Democrat who arrives on the scene with a lot of money, but who has the blood of tens of thousands of people on their hands.

No way for me, Hillary. You are not a leader. You shift here and there and everywhere–I want a Democratic leader, not a member of the DC club–and you have become a member of that club.

Give it up. You can never ever be a serious contender as long as you try to huide that vote. It will be used against you by the oppostion and by persons in your own party. You will be against the wall, much the same way as Kerry. After all you had the “same intelligence as Bush” when you voted for that war. Right? or not? Heh, you will avoid answering that question and it weakens you.

WE DO NOT NEED WEAK in order to win.

  91. Jesus Christ God of WAR says:

#72 – I can understand how so many feel very pissed at Hillary. I often feel the same thing when I hear her speak, but support her in her attack on the WH and Cheney & Rumsfeld especially. These guys are scum, total scum and it’s time that someone who has her name recognition say so. . . .

Very true. If more Dems would stand together on a solid message against the Bush Cabal I’d feel better about the centrist left.

#77 Hillary IS a neocon. She IS a corporatist. She’s DLC, remember?

Well, she’s set up her own organization OUTSIDE of the DLC to “investigate” a run at the Presidency in 2006. So, no, she’s not DLC. In fact, I think she’s pissed ‘um off a little.

Feingold in 2006! He’s got to be near the top of the list of contenders for me. Hillary as VP? Maybe. But I’d get someone who is as vocal as Feingold to be his running mate.

  92. NYStater says:

Feingold’s my guy right now, but I’m skeptical of his national chances as a liberal Jew for president–and I say that as a liberal Jew who’s traveled all around this country. It’s early, but he’s my choice right now. BUT, whoever wins the nomination should get rabid support from all of us, so don’t trash any of the candidates too badly. Hillary is far from perfect, but she’s not the demon Rush made her out to be.

  93. Berken says:

I sometimes wonder what planet some of these comments are coming from. Where did anyone get the idea that Hillary Clinton, Junior Senator from New York, was a “politician of national stature?” She had no direct political experience before making the New York senate run, and–blame who you will–she easily qualifies as the most hated woman in American history. She played the part of a junior senator reasonably well, and if she had tried to take any public stand beyond that positiion, anything useful that she might have said would have been buried in an avalance of villification from every Republican and “mainstream” pundit in the country. That would have been the end of any public discussion on whatever topic she hoped to address, replaced by hundreds of hours and pages of Hillary-bashing

In essence, she has been playing the role inside politics Al Gore has played from the outside: keeping a low profile and doing whatever useful things she can do without arousing the fury of the Beltway social club. They declared her persona non grata back in 2000, just as they did Al Gore,. Both of them know they can only make strong public statements in limited ways to a limited audience without starting a firestorm of soundbite-burning abuse.

Congrats to Hillary for reading the situation carefully. The ongoing implosion of the Bushites has become so distracting she may be able to actually contribute something to the public debate. If this has happened out of political calculation, good for her! We’ve plenty of Democrats who hold high office while flunking elementary political calculus year after depresssing year, while Rove and company win all the elections.

As for apologizing for her vote in 2002, what possible good could that do? It would impress no one and give every Hillary-hater in the country—and quite a few in these forums—yet another switch to flog her with.

I’ll settle for useful and pointed criticism of Cheney right now. There’s little enough of that in the public arena. I’m still predicting that one of the less-known Democrats will grab the 2008 nomination. As long as the Beltway has veto power over the candidates, the less known the Democratic contender is in Washington, the better.

  94. Bush_Is_a_Moron says:

What respect I had for Hillary quickly evaporated after her vote for Bush’s war. She is an establishment democrat who has no concept of what it means to be a progressive. I could never support her as our candidate in ‘08, that would be a joke, the rethugs would have a field day. She is radioactive. Stay away.

  95. Heynow says:

Good for her !!! Stupid Loserman should have grown a pair and he might have been still a democratic candidate for the senate… Now he is just a little spiteful weasel. Hillary is still in the game. Why is she the only Dem letting the Bush have it. Keep it up Hillary because people are listening. Whoever (Republican or Democrat) thinks the Iraqi war was a good ideal needs thier head examined let alone voted out of office.

  96. Terry C says:

I think Hillary can still be brought around to our way of thinking.

  97. Terry C says:

  98. Betty35 says:

  99. Betty35 says:

Does anybody know that Hillary has a Democratic opponent in the primary on Sept. 12?

His name is John Tasini, and he is a real progressive who is against the war in Iraq. He is more progressive than Ned Lamont in my opinion.

Check out the url on this post, please, and tell me don’t think Tasini sounds like a winner like Lamont. Tell me you don’t agree with him 100% on the issues.

  100. Jack Flash says:

You all do know that there was a possible world in which the US went into Iraq, deposed Saddam, had enough troops in place to impose order, prevented the looting of arms storage facilities, turned the whole thing over to UN administration six months later, and came out smelling like a rose?

As with everything in life, it’s not what you do, it’s how you do it. So the question isn’t whether the US should have taken out Saddam or not, but whether in doing so, and the follow up, it should have done it the way Bush and Rummy went at it. Hillary – much as I would never vote for her – was precisely right in judging it reasonable to go in, and in judging the administration’s incompetence afterwards as criminal.

  101. Berken says:

Congratulations to Hilary Clinton for standing up. Who cares if she was the first or second to come to the progressive train as it’s leaving the station? . . . Point is: She DID stand up and say that the emperor (Cheney) has no clothes on.

That puts her ahead of about 95 senators, 400 congressmen, and everyone on the national news services except, I think, Keith Olberman and Jack Cafferty.

Considering that Cheney’s pissy attitude and general thuggishness suggests that his ambiiton is to be the villain in the next James Bond flick, one wonders why he’s so respected.

Or is it more an issue of cowardice?

  102. jasonm says:

Whether there’s such a possible world or not is unprovable speculation, but in any case, if there were such a world it would not automatically be one in which the invasion was (a) justified or (b) an intelligent anti-terror strategy in the wake of 9/11.

There’s also a possible world in which Saddam really did have WMD and was actively collaborating with Al-Qaeda to use them against us. That would be a world in which the invasion was justified, and that is what the administration wanted us to believe was actually the case. But that is far from being the actual world, and many saw that there was ample reason ahead of time to doubt these claims, implications, and innuendos that were used to sell this war.

  103. Vicki says:

Give me a break! She dares to talk about lack of leadership. She has not done anything but endorse the Bush agenda until very recently. Six months of speaking out occasionally, due to the coming elections is not leadership. Yes, I agree, the failure of this administration is a failure of real leadership, but I hardly see that she has proven she has that distinctive quality or anymore than needed to lead a Girl Scout group.

  104. Hols says:

Wow, for once the people on the left and myself agree on something. Hillary is a news-whore, totally unworthy of the office she holds now, and wholly unfit for presidential service too. said by: #38 Comment by Republican — August 11, 2006 @ 12:29 pm

My, my! I would have thought you’d support the person your Party wants to run. They have pushed via the ms media for Hilary to run since the last election. She’s not my choice, but if she is our only Democrat running for I will vote for her. When WH, Cheney and the boys are preprematurely removed from the Executive branch of our government, which they swore to protect and defend, we will be ready to put someone better in charge. “WE”! — not Republicans! Not to worry!

  108. Captain USA says:

The republican swiftboating began on Hillary Clinton as soon as she became First Lady. The swifties used the rumor mills to begin their attacks on her back then. They have never given up because they fear she could become president if they don’t keep up the attacks and lies. They have been so relentless that they even have democrats believing their verbal vomit. No senator has been so heavily scrutinized. I think its time to give the Senator from NY a breather from the constant barrage of hate, orchestrated at her from castrated republicans. Refuse to be brainwashed about Mrs. Cinton.

  113. Nardstick says:

Oh, so now Hillary is guilty of political calculation, because of the timing of her absolutely-true statement? PLEASE. She’s a *politican*, folks: besides serving the interests of one’s constituents (and not every politician does), they’re naturally going to also want to serve their own interests a little– it’s in their DNA. Whatever the reasons for the timing actually are in Senator Clinton’s case are her own, and probably don’t matter as much as we think they might. That she made the statement at all is, ipso facto, cause for celebration, for this reason: she is keenly aware of the attention her words draw, both as a senator from New York and as a former First Lady. These two factors make it very appropriate, even wise, for her to hold back from public comment until a party position has been established; from there, she can choose to toe that line, or swing more centrist, based on calculation. Not very different from what any other politician does, if you ask me, and I don’t necessarily see aspirations for 2008 dripping from every word she utters.

I’m not a huge supporter of Hillary Clinton– I think it was a mistake for her to run for the Senate, as much because it was Hillary Clinton running for anything as because she more or less stole the nomination from another candidate, the altogether more deserving Congresswoman Nita Lowey– and would have serious misgivings about supporting her for president if she is my party’s nominee. That said, I also think it’s time to cut her just a little slack. Molly Ivins wrote about people criticizing Bill for every single move he made while president– supporting bipartisanship, not supporting it, helping a friend, not helping a friend, you name it. I specifically recall her describing him as the Rodney Dangerfield of the presidency. It would be a sad and sorry shame if the same tactics were to be deployed against his wife, before a campaign were even to get underway. We don’t even know for certain yet that it will. I seem to recall something about free speech being guaranteed in the Constitution, which somehow continues to endure, so here’s myvote: let her run. Let’s just see what she has to say from the stump. If it isn’t much, then the campaign will fail all by itself, and normal life will resume soon enough.

  114. Jon Koppenhoefer says:

Senator Clinton is a completely political creature, and this comment by her–welcome as it is–may signal a new tone in Democratic election politics.

  115. GeorgeBushAlQaeda says:

bein president of america and a group of middle eastern terrorists at the same time is just like bein a double knot spy! — George W Bush, double knot spy

  116. space says:

I think Hillary’s defenders don’t really understand the criticism that is being levelled at her.

Obviously we would prefer that she parrot the views of true progressives and sane military experts to those of the GOP or the beltway pundits. And of course not every elected official can be a true leader on important issues. There is no question that New York is better off with Hillary and Schumer than with D’Amato and Moynihan.

But many of Hillary’s critics get irritated every time Hillary does the bare minimum and, all of a sudden, gets talked about as being a serious candidate for the White House. There is a big, big difference between being a halfway-decent, finger-in-the-wind Senator and the leader of the Democratic party, not to mention the leader of the most powerful country on the planet. And coming to your senses about Cheney several years too late pretty much discredits you as a serious Presidential choice, even if I am more than happy to have her keep her spot in the Senate.
