“While the British terror suspects were hatching their plot,

the Bush administration was quietly seeking permission to divert $6 million that was supposed to be spent this year developing new homeland explosives detection technology,” the AP reports. “Congressional leaders rejected the idea, the latest in a series of steps by the Homeland Security Department that has left lawmakers and some of the department’s own experts questioning the commitment to create better anti-terror technologies.”

And this is a surprise? you’ll search every handbag for chapstick only after 5 years of the “terrorist threat”, but you don’t search every container coming into US ports that might hold a “loose nuke”? And “some people” question the “commitment to create better anti-terror technologies”?

  2. katy says:

and what of the cargo, along with luggage, sitting under passengers, NOT INSPECTED ?…

  3. Badmoodman says:

$6 million? Pardon the analogy, but that is truly a drop in the bucket.

  4. bones says:

#4, extensive testing has been done with bomb proff luggage/cargo containers that can be loaded into planes, and the tests show they work VERY well. The government rejected the idea as “too expensive”. But buying billions in bomb sniffing machines with contracts going to Bush cronies, that’s not too expensive.

Congress gives these Boneheads more than 700 Million dollars, this year alone, so these INCREDIBLE IDIOTS can play with all of this STUFF, casting off one to grab the next one, and doing it over and over again. But they don’t want to make a choice just yet. What if something EVEN BETTER (maybe) came along? We’d be stuck then! So forget that noise, we’ll just keep looking… for now. What’s the hurry? Thursday, the peons find out about a plot, boy those BushCo folks DO love their secrets! Those goofy B*st*rds! Always looking for new ways to ’surprise’ us! And on Friday, guess what!?! We finally got someone to ‘head’ our department! We’ve been ‘headless’ for awhile, but BushCo has been REALLY busy lately, all those ‘war’s’, don’t you know. The true tragedy here is, that this crap will go on and on, in some form or another, until every last one of these worthless F*CKS is dead and gone. And it will take DECADES to happen to them all. They won’t ever stop, until they are dead. And Congress had to take back 200 Million dollars, because they weren’t wasting it fast enough. But they can’t find 7 Million dollars to fund Brain Injury Research, meant to help our Veterans, who were injured, fighting BushCo’s battles. “The budget is just so tight right now.” Take it out of the 200 Million you took back from the DHS, you F*CKING JERKS!! I apologize for my foul mouth. But damn…

While Bush is galvanizing militancy against the U.S. and not taking proper steps to really bring about Homeland Security – you have this idiot on CNN calling Lamont the so-called Al Queda candidate:

“How does this factor into the Lieberman/Lamont contest? And might some argue, as some have, that Lamont is the al Qaeda candidate?”

    —Chuck Roberts, CNN anchor

Read this and keep your eyes open re: CNN.

As many of you know – CNN is owned by Time Warner.
Time Warner is run by Dick Parsons - who is a Republican and was involved in Republican politics early in his career.

While still in his 20s, Parsons was an adviser to New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller and to President Gerald Ford.

    http://www.businessweek.com/ magazine/ content/ 03_20/ b3833001_mz001.htm

The same article says that G.W. Bush had offered Parsons a job during his first term ( it does not say what job ).

I do not intend to indict Parsons of “playing dirty pool” with his influence and party loyalties. I do not know much about him. Seems like a reasonable guy whenever he shows up on CNBC.

But we do have to keep an eye out for more bullshit like this from CNN.

After all that has gone on with Bush in charge – dots that connect the way these dots seem to be connecting cannot be ignored.

How about NO glasses, since Bond’s shades can cut like a knife or have exray vision > lol.
NO belts allowed because you could whip the pilot to death with it, or strangle the stewardess with it > lol. NO thongs either because you could use it as a slingshot > lol.
NO hats since in Goldfinger movie the chinese guy’s hat could be used to cut a head off > lol. Anybody else have any ideas what needs to be banned from passenger planes?

  27. Banned in the USA says:

#31 Dangerous Items Banned on flights by Republicans

1: Books – These items promote independent/critical thinking. A great danger exists that citizens may read something other than RightWingMedia FEAR/TERROR propaganda and in doing so, lead people to come to their senses and remove all Republicans from office in the upcoming elections. The only exception would be bibles since the old testament reflects and reinforces Republican values/beliefs.

    2. Restricted TV/Movie viewing — For obvious reasons, only the FOX NEWS channel should be allowed to be shown on any and all flights. Passengers viewing anything else may be exposed to Anti-Republican/Liberal Media messages emanating from some remote corner of the globe, such as Antarctica…Too Risky!

    3. Conversations should be restricted to infotainment topics only – Airline Passengers should be required to avoid discussing anything remotely controversial or political in nature unless the purpose of the discussion is to remind other passengers of the potential dangers of Terrorism. Examples of this would be to remind other passengers that the War in Iraq was justified because there were WMD’s there (even though they were purchased from the US) along with Terrorists (originally trained by the US) plotting Terrorism. Above all else, passengers should be reminded of how afraid they should be of the Terrorists. Passengers should be encouraged to tell scary, bedtime stories instead, followed by a card game using a deck of Iraq’s most wanted playing cards.

Remember…Be Afraid, Be VERY AFRAID! Terrorism is just around the corner!

  30. bones says:

The stupidity on the face of this policy is unbelievable. So people show up in an airport. They have hand carry luggage and because of the increased focus on chapstick, LONG lines develop. I was in Vegas airport when @ 3000 people were snaking round and round packed tight body to body in a small enclosed area. Would you do any less damage or kill fewer people if you set off a device in that area. Would you terrorize people any less if the event occurred in that crowed enviornment in the airport than on a plane? No you would kill dozens, shut down the air transportation system nationwide. You would disrupt travel, commerce, and terrorized the entire country. Yet there is NO security procedure that addresses this possibility in any airpport in the US. This “increased security” is NO security at all.

Folks, you just have to realize that Bush has bankrupted the USA. Despite the billions of dollars that flow into the treasury every quarter, the USA is broke. Bush and his ilk have spent it before it got there. Borrowing a billion a day from China and other countries will do it.

In spite of the attack on this country 5 years ago, this administration, blindfolded and ignorant, just does not understand terrorism. You cant fight terrist if you dont know what terrorism is.

Look at the British system. If this plot would have been discovered in the US a TOP SECRET tag would have been put on everything connected with it, the people thrown in the darkest of prisons, and never heard from again. We are not a government that works folks because of the policies instituted by this right wing nut, and his followers. Our government is owned by the oil companies and by the pharma industry and by cohorts of the administration such as Halliburton, et al.

It is time to take back your country my fellow citizens. It is time to vote and revolt. It is time to take over the oil companies and run them as a business, not a private concern where every dollar made and gouged from the public is set aside for the retirement of the officers of the company.

  34. Zippy the Other Pinhead says:

Well of COURSE the bushniks were diverting funds designated for homeland security — the only “homeland” they prefer to secure is their own castles. BushCo spent years fighting the 9/11 Commission, then denying the truths of the commission’s report, and now, a couple of years later, they’ve ignored all the recommendations of the commission and have failed to implement those recommendations.

All that the bushniks and their republicrap enablers want to do is TALK about security — they have no real interest in actually DOING anything about it. So continued diversion of designated funding should not be a surprise…

It is idiotic to think that the Bushies can protect us from terrist when they have no idea what a terrist is.

We invaded Iraq. WMDs and terrist were supposedly there. Find any? Nope. This administration cant find its ass with both hands.

Keeping Americans afraid continues to work for Bush&Co. I just saw a poll taken yesterday with Bush’s approval spiking upward because of the terror threat. :(
In every other area, he fails miserably, but this one continues to sway the frightened public. Rove, the master political brain says – be afraid, people. Be very afraid. Only GW and his cabal know how to keep us safe – and the sham works.
Everyone seems to forget that in 2000, Clinton foiled a millennium attack.
Everyone forgets that the WTC was bombed in 1993 and those perpetrators are in prison (Clinton’s admin.)
Everyone forgets that Reagan is the one who left Lebanon – I don’t say that was right or wrong – but it was sure “cut and run.”
Why oh why don’ t the Dems speak louder against this Rove noise machine.

  47. Bruce Gorton says:

    Marie

This is why we on the left need to fight this issue the best way we know how, by saying “Up yours” to both the terrorists and the fear mongers. Lets make the waiting in line fun, and show how unafraid we are. Lets show our strength, humour, and resiliance in the best way we can: Make every airport a party.

  48. Marie says:

I am always up for a party, Bruce!

  49. Marie says:

If W would have received an urgent PDB on this while at the ranch in Crawford, if he would have received a personal visit from the CIA indicating the potential threat, he would have told the agent, “OK, you’ve covered your ass now.” And he would have tossed the PDB in the wastebasket as simply an historical document, repeating the same old, same old.
Oh – wait — he did that before? On August 6, 2001?

  50. Rebel With A Cause says:

The Bush machine has been asleep at the wheel ever since 9/11, and before. Please recall that following that eventful day all of the principals in the failed administration went before the cameras and gave out statements like “who would ever have thought the terrists would use an airplane”.

Well folks, let me put you straight. The FBI and other intelligence agencies are brimming over with that very prospect, yet nothing was done by the corrupt Bushies. Hellfire, a guy in a light plane even flew onto the WH grounds and crashed, trying to reach the presidents bedroom. Hit a tree instead.

Thousands of books have been written in the past 6 years about the incompetence and the lies of this administration, but are people reading them, and waking up?

The answer is no.This incompetents poll numbers are at 33%, when they should be in the minus column. Wake up and piss amurka, the world is on fire.

  51. Jay Randal says:

Just so you know the press has finally reported that the supposed terrorists intended to bring contact lens eye wash bottles on the planes filled with peroxide, and like shampoo bottles filled with bleach, then mix the two chemicals to make a liquid firebomb of some kind?! The odd thing is that this would have nothing to do with toothpaste or chapstick or even a deodorant bar! Nor cans of shaving cream or even tiny bottles of perfume! The Bush Regime has used this terror threat to justify confiscating people’s personal hygiene products for NO damn legitimate reasons, but the security dopes at the airports keep taking the toothpaste from everybody ? Come on Americans use your brains and realize Bush is fooling everybody again!

  52. Marie says:

    Jay,
What do you think is the potential for explosions with all those liquids dumped into trash cans around the terminals?
This was the same kind of threat that was foiled in 1996; this isn’t something new. They said no one would have ever thought that a plane would be used as a bomb – when they already knew that it had been tried and written about many times.
America is not waking up to their lies; just when we think they might be rousing from slumber, a terrorist plot is revealed and Bush&Co are happy again.
Finally, HS is now saying that this ban on liquids won’t last too long.
What does that say about their credibility, and the reliability of their words.

  53. unbelievable says:

I have to go pick up my mother at the airport tomorrow. I’m dreading it…

  54. Jay Randal says:

Post 57 Marie > dumping some of those items together if they mixed could cause a toxic gas cloud in the airports or a vapor that could irritate the eyes or lungs! The fact that the items are all dumped together proves that the terror threat is completely bogus! Removing the items is just for show and to instill fear on all the plane travelers!

Plus TOOTHPASTE has nothing to do with anything, so security taking it is plain stupid!

  55. Jay Randal says:

One other thing of interest is that the press reports the ban on personal hygiene products will be rescinded in in late September, so this is to cover the period up to 9/11, so like I said a bogus contrived terror threat!

  56. Jay Randal says:

I used to work for a hardware/nursery-plant chain store > we kept pool acid at one end of the inside pool supplies and clorine at the other end > if the two were poured together it sets off an instant deadly gas that would burn your skin, damage your eyes, and sear your lungs causing an agonizing death! One day just before I arrived an employee poured the two together at the same time in a small pond > the gas filled the greenhouse and burned most of the plants seriously and the whole nursery had to be evacuated! Those two chemicals could kill all the passengers on a plane and cause it to crash!

The Terr’rists won’t get us, but gingivitis will!!!

Seriously though, it does make great press, to inconvenience thousands of travelers and force them to sacrifice tens of thousands of dollars worth of goods on national television to drive home the point that we must be afraid, and must all be willing to sacrifice in the global war on terror.

With great bravura He puts on an illusory show of force, while freight cargo still goes onboard unchecked.

More has been accomplished with a half-baked scheme than a well-carried out attack. Can you imagine the havoc one person could do with a bottle of Mr. Clean and a bottle of Clorox on a crowded subway?

It is only a matter of time before such an attack will happen, and it is more likely now that this method has garnered such publicity.

Eventually we will realize that we cannot combat terrorism with violence. We must work to eliminate the root causes. Peace will be attained. But will it be the peace of the graveyard, or the peace of enlightenment?

#64 – no, I didn’t see that particular one. but it doesn’t take too much to figure out that the “security measures” instituted since 9/11 are largely a sham, designed more to keep fear in the public eye than to actually protect anyone.

And thanks for the welcome back. After taking the Bar exam, I took the Mrs. on a trip through Europe to see some of the places I visited when studying international law. We flew back just hours before the new restrictions! At least we didn’t have to repack the 3 bottles of French wine we bought in Paris. And if we would have had to dispose of them, I’d have filtered them through my kidneys first!

I can see a resurgence in sales of hard-shell luggage. The soft-shell pieces don’t protect the contents too well. We packed a bottle of Sacher (chocolate) Liquor from Vienna into checked-in luggage. It was packaged in a wooden shipping box. The box was destroyed, but fortunately the bottle was still intact. So—if you’re going to check-in bottles of wine, etc., I strongly recommend you get some hard-shell luggage. Then mark it “fragile – drop with care.”
