Labor Department Official Poses As ‘Conservative Analyst’ On Fox News, PBS
Labor Department deputy assistant secretary Karen Czarnecki has repeatedly appeared on television — including Fox News and PBS — as a pundit. While she apparently filed leave papers before heading to the studios and was cleared by the department’s ethics staff (political activity by federal employees is restricted by the Hatch Act), Czarnecki never revealed her government position. Instead she identified herself as a “conservative analyst.”
Some highlights of Czarnecki’s off-duty conservative analyses on PBS:
On abstinence:
CZARNECKI: Absolutely [abstinence is an option for African women], if Uganda can reduce its HIV infected population 50% to 60 over the years, it’s definitely an option.
HOST: It’s no more an option than to tell them their option is to marry a millionaire.
CZARNECKI: If you have free — you have free choice to choose abstinence. [7/16/06]
On intelligent design:
“Intelligent design doesn’t equate religion with science. It is based on scientific premise.” [5/7/05]
On No Child Left Behind:
“This program has been well funded by the federal government, and states have billions of dollars unspent for education cost. They can apply to doing this.” [4/30/05]
While some of the shorter appearances were apparently freebies, the Wasington Post’s Al Kamen notes that “the regular PBS gig does supplement her government pay.”

Being faithful will not protect a woman whose partner is not faithful. And using condoms is not a decision that a woman can make by herself; it depends on a man.
“We need to put the power to prevent HIV in the hands of women. This is true whether the woman is a faithful married mother of small children or a sex worker trying to scrape out a living in a slum. No matter where she lives or what she does, a woman should never need her partner’s permission to save her own life.”
The Gates Foundation is funding research into microbicides - gels or barrier creams a woman can use before sex that will kill HIV. An update on the research will take place during the week-long conference.
Mrs Gates called for an end to the stigma affecting those with HIV. “Stigma makes it easier for political leaders to stand in the way of saving lives,” she said, in a direct attack on some African leaders whose reservations over condoms are encouraged by the US Christian fundamentalist right’s belief that abstinence from sex is the answer.
“In some countries with widespread Aids epidemics, leaders have declared the distribution of condoms immoral, ineffective or both. Some have argued that condoms do not protect against HIV, but in fact help spread it. This is a serious obstacle to ending Aids. In the fight against Aids, condoms save lives. If you oppose the distribution of condoms, something is more important to you than saving lives.”

Saying that women’s abstinence will bring down the amount of people infected with HIV, is not too far removed from the idea that a society’s moral standards depend exclusively on the women’s virginity -which is, well, abstinence. It also lines up very nicely with the idea that diseases are sent by God as a punishment.
Finally, wouldn’t Czarnecki’s defence of No Child Left Behind (as a “conservative analyst” and without disclosing her government position) qualify as shameless government propaganda?

Are only two that come immediately to mind when I think of people who have compromised their ethics - that is assuming they had any to start with.
Many others have immediately jumped to punditry as they “retired” from Bush&Co.
Many others simply go to work as a lobbyist for the industry affected by their government employment.
Integrity? They don’t know the meaning of the word.
I would like to hear from the Labor Department Agency Ethics people. I can’t see letting her have “leave” for only a couple of hours. Now if she were to go on leave of absence without pay and not return it would look much better. Or at least take a week of leave for each TV appearance. Otherwise she should be introduced as “paid spokesman for the administration” or “right wing puppet of the Bush criminal conspiracy” depending on the politeness of the announcer.
