Right Wing Politicizes London Plot While Calling For ‘National Unity’ On Terrorism
Over the weekend, the television airwaves were inundated with conservatives calling for unity in response to the London terror plot. “No one should use this event or this war for political advantage,†Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI) said on Fox News Sunday. “[M]y goodness,” Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) said yesterday, “if we can’t get national unity and take politics out of this in terms of an attack like this, I don’t know what’s going to happen to us.â€
Much remains to be done to improve homeland security. For example, the administration has “yet to comprehensively improve sharing of counterterrorism information.” But rather than focus on policies to prepare against future terrorism, conservatives spent last week politicizing news of the London plot:
- “US President George W. Bush seized on a foiled London airline bomb plot to hammer unnamed critics he accused of having all but forgotten the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. […] ‘Weeks before September 11th, this is going to play big,’ said another White House official.†[Agence France Presse, 8/10/06]
- “This week’s dramatic new terrorism threat may help remind voters Republicans have provided ‘strong leadership on that issue that won’t vacillate,’ Sen. John Thune of South Dakota said Friday. ‘People will focus on that issue this November,’ Thune said.” [Lincoln Journal Star, 8/12/06]
- “‘Defeatocrats!’ declared a statement issued by office of the House majority leader, John A. Boehner of Ohio, capturing the tone of Republican rhetoric as the news unfolded.†[New York Times, 8/11/06]
- “Today, President Bush faces a similar challenge. In the middle of a war on terror, we need to remain focused on furthering Republican ideas more than ever before. We can’t turn back now. Apparently the right wing is not yet unified around the concept of national unity in the face of terrorism.

I hope these guys’ opponents are smart enough to make campaign ads referencing this call for non-partisanship about the “War on Terra” and hang them with their comments whenever they bring up 9/11.

But guess what? The Clinton Administration used good old fashioned police work to crack the case before anyone was hurt. Were they all over the media telling people to live in fear unless you lock step with The Party? No. The Clinton Administration as more mature than that. They said, yes, bad things could have happened. But we avoided it. And we’re doing our job.
Rethuglicans, by contrast, are NOT doing their job. So all they have left is to hammer people with fear and loathing over the airwaves. Very immature, this.

Conclusion: US, UK & Israel opposed the immedient crease fire in Lebanon, who were also behind the 911 terror attack and who are behind this latest terror plot.

This is not about the war in Iraq.
It has nothing to do with Joe Lieberman.
This is the Republican trap.
Don’t fall in.
“They have tried to keep it together — they have to make it one in people’s minds in order to cover the strategic error of Iraq,†says James Webb, Democratic Senate candidate from Virginia, and former member of the Reagan administration.
From the very beginning, the Republican slip of hand has been to convince people that the war in Iraq was the answer to 9/11.
It wasn’t. It isn’t. It never was.
It isn’t the answer to British hijackers either.
This really has nothing to do with the war in Iraq. It needs to be said over and over.
It’s the distraction from focusing on airline safety, on Usama bin Laden, on America’s true enemies. It’s one of the reasons we are so hated around the world.

“The war in Iraq had nothing to do with the war against international terrorism, or very little to do with the war on terrorism,†Webb says in interviews. “It has distracted our attention, it has pulled our forces in, and we are now in a situation where we have 135,000 on the ground, which affects our ability to do a lot of things that we would be able to do otherwise.â€
Being anti-war has nothing to do with being soft-on-terrorism or ready to lead the world in dangerous times.
Being anti-war means having the resources we need to fight terrorism effectively.
No party is in favor of taking bombs on airplanes. As to whether either party is better at keeping them off, we are likely to hear more about that than we care to.
The Republicans have only one minor advantage left in the polls. They are now trailing on everything – starting with the war in Iraq, and then continuing on with the economy, the environment, health care, foreign policy– in some cases well into the double digits– with the only exception being terrorism. And their lead on terrorism is quite small.
So what do you do when you’re leading on exactly one issue?
What do you do when you have a slight winner and a loser. The loser, of course, the big loser, is the war in Iraq. You marry them, of course.
This is the August surprise. It’s what they have to work with, and they will try to milk it for all it’s worth.
They will try to connect Lieberman’s defeat with the attempted hijackings and say that the Democratic Party is being hijacked by the anti-war, anti-defense (pro-terrorism) crowd. Have you ever heard of anyone who was pro-terrorism? Who wanted to spend less on airport security? Who thought planes were too safe? What could be more ridiculous? But that will be the line.
What Dick Cheney started on Wednesday, saying that Lieberman’s defeat suggested the Democratic Party was not prepared to lead in dangerous times, was just the beginning.
Who is going to let them get away with it?
Say it ain’t so, Joe. Wouldn’t that be a classy gesture? You know it’s not true. They’re saying this about your colleagues of decades standing. Joe Lieberman himself should stand up to that kind of talk. If he fails to, he will continue to lose the respect of his former colleagues and supporters, voters included.
This is what happens when you turn your back on your party. Then others attack your party and they come to you and ask you what you think. And moments like these will define Joe Lieberman as much as his run for the vice presidency did.
His decency is on the line now as much as it has ever been. He knows better. This is another occasion for Lieberman to distance himself from his fellow Democrats, another step in his losing his Senate seat.

We’ve now come full circle-Afghanistan was invaded and occupied in order to drive the Taliban and al-Qaeda from power. Instead of finishing the job right, W instead decides to show up his own father’s Iraq policy by invading and occupying Iraq, the result being an illogical draw down of the resources in Afghanistan to further an unnecessary military campaign in a country that had no links to Usama bin Laden, al-Qaeda OR the 9-11 attacks.
The CIA unit devoted to catching or killing Usama bin Laden is shut down last year
The Taliban and al-Qaeda are now resurgent in Afghanistan as well, a DIRECT result of W’s monumentally stupid decision to invade and occupy Iraq, and are now able to plan further attacks against the US on US soil and airliners world wide
But maybe it’s just me, as I fail to see how this President has made this country logically and realistically safer from another terrorist attack regarding it’s Iraq policy
Sure, this Administration is quick to shred the Constitution at every opportunity, considering the vast majority of US citizens as al-Qaeda sympathizers-witness it’s attempts to warrantlessly spy on us and pushing for policies that would allow it to lock up any US citizen and deny them the most basic Constitutional guarantees of due process legally-but there is not one single success-especially in terms of disrupting major terrorist plots-that can be pointed to that justify this President’s outright war on the same Constitution he swore to uphold and protect from enemies both foreign and domestic
The Administration will never again get a majority of voters to support it’s Iraq disaster, a lesson the GOP is learning in the hardest of painful ways, as most people are and have made clear distinctions between the Iraq occupation and the larger “Global War On Terror”
Bad news for the Administration, GOP and Karl Rove, good news for the rest of us and the US Constitution

Unfortunately for Rove, I think the chances are better that the public will translate it’s unhappiness about Iraq to W’s “War on Terrorism”, especially as it seems the public is moving in that direction more and more by the day
And even more unfortunately for W, there’s another anniversary that’s coming up even sooner than the 5th anniversary of the September 11 attack, and that would be the 1st anniversary of Katrina’s devastating New Orleans and the Gulf coast, giving everyone the chance to reminisce about the horrific and malign nonresponse of an immediate rescue and relief operation, most notable when W froze up, as opposed to showing the strong, decisive leadership such a catastrophe required, instead sticking to the fundraising vacation that left no time for trifles like making sure the Govt didn’t fail it’s poorest and most vulnerable citizens at the time they needed it’s help the most
And Rove has the problems of ethical and legal scandals infesting the GOP, most notably with anyone involved with now convicted felon Jack Abramoff
Basically, W is one bad response to another cataclysm away from losing control of the House, possibly the Senate as well
And since so much of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast look the same as they did immediately after Katrina, then Rita, hit, why should anyone think the Administration or FEMA have learned the painful lessons both storms wrought upon a vulnerable citizenry?
The radical neocons time of unchallenged power and GOP inspired legislative nonoversight of the Executive branch is coming to an end, and that starts come November, as even Diebold ain’t saving the GOP this time
And I can’t think of a group of bloodthirsty, money-worshipping ghouls more deserving of their current woes than the radical neocons responsible for so much death, hatred and corruption that W’s brutal policies have inflicted on both us and the rest of the world
And if the GOP goes down, what will that do for so many of their media whores, lackeys and apologists, especially with the more extreme and exterminationist rhetoriticians pitching the party line above the US Constitution?
Knock out the GOP, and you deliver a STAGGERING blow to the Coulters, Limbaughs, Becks, Malkins, Hannitys, Savages and the rest of their joyously hateful ilk

The reference to Christ notwithstanding, he was not personally a Christian, regarding the Catholicism he was baptized into as an irrational superstition. In fact he admired Islam more than Christianity, and he and his policies were highly respected by many of the Muslims of his day. Very much like the situation in Bosnia-People had the mistaken impression that the Serb military was tougher than the Muslims it tried so ruthlessly to crush and obliterate, and the Serbs gained the “toughness” reputation because they racked up victory after victory
But that reputation was a joke, the toughness was on the part of the Bosnians who survived the Serbs onslaught and kept fighting back
And when the Serbs suffered their first military defeat in Bosnia, suddenly that peace plan they were so quick to laugh off previously didn’t seem like such a bad deal after all
And in the end, it didn’t matter in the least, the Criminal Syndicate known as the Milosevic regime was wiped out, it’s leaders either assassinated (Arkan), on the run (Karadzic & Miladic) or, best of all, died in captivity (Milosevic)
Seems the end of the Milosevic Thugs regime is a damn good model for the people to force upon the same type of rapacious bastards running both the Administration and GOP
And that’s why the GOP is pulling out all the stops on dirty tricks and criminal actions in order to maintain it’s hold on the legislative branch’s non-oversight of the Administration, because they know if they lose control of even just one chamber of Congress, the subpeonas start flying-And war-profiteering due to no-bid, no-oversight contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan would be the perfect place to start the process
Unfortunately for the GOP, the tide has definitely turned against their policies that exist only to enrich those already at the very top of the economic ladder while making life as rough and brutal as possible for all who don’t cut the GOP big campaign contributions, and make no mistake, the massive corruption encouraged by the GOP is definitely putting this country at risk from enemies both military and economic
I’m not a Dem, but it’s good to see that they’re starting to finally play by the rules Rove set, with the notable exception of not having to lie when it comes to all the negative actions of the Bush jr Administration and the GOP. It looks like the party as a whole is finally starting to show a desperately needed spine so far shown only by a few members, most notably, but not limited to, Feingold, Murtha, Conyers, Durbin, Reid, Dodd, the CBC, & Kennedy
The GOP and Administration are badly hurt at this point, and now the Dems have to really pour it on by attacking on every point possible, not one bit of political mercy should be shown or tolerated towards hurting these GOP bastards & their willing Dem lapdogs like Lieberman. when they’re down, dazed and reeling
The radical neocons know their time is rightly coming to an end, and the sooner they’re relegated to their proper place on history’s rubbish heap, the better it is for all of us who love this country and our Constitution
The Constitution will survive it’s latest GOP enemies, just like it survived the Civil War, both World Wars, and all US military conflicts since then.

If you haven’t seen the movie, England is under an extreme right wing/facist government in the near future.
In other words, I was attacking the use of the phrase ‘National Unity’, not spreading republican propaganda.

Second, the references relating the neocons to Nazis are not one-for-one precisely-in-every-detail-the-same. No one claims that there are parallel upbringings. The comments refer to policy and attemted policy. Sure, it is easy to show how any one person in the world does not have the same life experiences as any other person in the world. True. But the policies either attained or sought by this administration and their tactics are similar to (NOT an “identity” with) with Nazi policies and tactics. I know that you are smarter than this, so don’t present dishonest arguments to skew the point.
