Yesterday on Fox News, Sean Hannity bashed Americans for Peace Now founder Mark Rosenblum for claiming that Hannity had suggested Israel should drop a nuclear bomb to destroy Hezbollah. “I never said drop a nuclear bomb,” Hannity responded. A few moments later, Hannity slipped and said, “It could have. They could obliterate them.” Hannity ended the segment by telling Rosenblum he was “full of sh*t.” Watch it:

COLMES: What do you though — let’s say Hezbollah keeps firing, though. What do you do then?
ROSENBLUM: Well, you have to fire back. And what this particular resolution allows is Israel is defined as the victim. Hezbollah is the perpetrator. Israel has the right to defend itself while it stays in southern Lebanon. There has never been a United Nations resolution so friendly to Israeli security interests and right — but it is a piece of paper, not implemented yet.
HANNITY: A lot of good 1559 did. I think anything short of the defeat of Hezbollah or crippling it to a larger extent is a waste of time.
ROSENBLUM: By dropping your nuclear bomb, is what you said.
HANNITY: No, no, I never said drop a nuclear bomb. You said that they weren’t winning, and I said they could have won it in a second if they wanted to. I’m saying Israeli forces, their generals are saying they didn’t fight it to the full extent.
ROSENBLUM: And again you’re monolithing Israel. There’s a dispute on this in Israel.
HANNITY: But don’t mischaracterize what I said. I never said drop a weapon. I said they could, they could obliterate them. And if they wanted to, they could have.
ROSENBLUM: And you said a nuclear weapon could be…

HANNITY: It could have. They could obliterate them.
ROSENBLUM: Again, why would Israel choose not to do that?
HANNITY: What part of that don’t you understand?
ROSENBLUM: Look at Israeli self-interest.

In the late 1960’s & 70’s, the UK security forces killed large groups of civilians indiscriminatley several times in the north of Ireland. It unleashed 30 years of terrorism, which only recently has finally been brought under control. A change of policy mantained over several decades, and in the face of provocation, gradually calmed the environment.
Remember, the IRA actually killed members of the British government and very nearly killed Margreat Thatcher herself by bombing the hotel the cabinet were staying in. That is restraint, and Maggie was no shrinking violet. The key instruments to defeat terrorism are restraint, policing and the elimination of injustice.
Short of genocide, and perhaps not even then, current terrorism is not going to simply disappear.
It is intriuging to note that a 30-40% theme is emerging in the US. That number support bush, believe they are “winning†in Iraq, believe it makes sense to “tag†muslims in the US and don’t want a timetable for withdrawal. It is clear they want a genocidal WWII class war that will kill millions in the middle east, that provides “moral clarity”. These people are not dismayed and horrified by terrorist attacks and efforts but excited by them, because it has the potential to herd a critical mass of bleating, frightened sheeple into their “KILL THEM, KILL THEM ALL” camp.

My take is this: Hannity seems to think (and insists) that Israel can “obliterate” Hezbollah. Rosenblum understood that by “obliterating” Hannity meant dropping a nuclear weapon.
From the transcript, it is not clear to me that Hannity was talking about using a nuclear bomb. Did he mention it before Rosenblum brought it up?
As it stands, I think it is a moot point. What is clear to me, is that the death and destruction Lebanon suffered wasn’t enough for Hannity. Nuclear weapons or not.

Maybe there’s more to the conversation than what I see on the post but your headline might be construed as slightly misleading. Unless there’s more to the story than is posted, you might have fallen a little short of the mark on this one.

There are other ways for the Israeli military to destroy Lebanon in a Hannity “second” — i.e. carpet bomb the south and Beirut; huge ground invasion; etc., etc. — and this seems to be what Hannity is offering as a solution, and he includes the fact that some Israeli “generals” believe they should have done more.
Granted, it’s a terrible solution, but it’s definitely not nuking. I can’t believe I’m defending Hannity, but he clearly says “I never said drop a nuclear bomb.”

I can’t believe I am either. Quite frankly, I don’t see from the transcript when/where he said Israel should use nuclear weapons. Yes, he said “in a second” -but I thought it was mere hyperbole, and that he was talking about overwhelming force. Which is bad enough in my opinion.
Maybe he used the word “nuclear” off-camera and that’s what Rosenblum was alluding to? Because from the transcript, honestly, I simply don’t see it.

That’s the point of international cooperation. Sharon was exchanging prisoners with Hezbollah for years. Hezbollah has been arming for years. Deliberately chosing to kill people over 2 soldiers “captured” on the Lebanese side of the border “right now” was a stupid thing to do planned and approved by the Bush Admin, the press reports the planning was in place BEFORE the soldiers were taken. What should have been done was negotiations and concrete improvements for both countries for the last 5 years so you don’t end up with this type of situation in the first place, but that takes planning and foresight, something the current Administration definitely knows nothing about.

And because you are so stupid you don’t know the protections offered civilians largely are a consequence of the actions of the militaries in WW II. And bullshitting your way thru the IMPORTANT POINT, I don’t care who the hell you think you are (1) YOU DON’T KILL CIVILIANS IN A WAR, (2) THAT’S THE SECOND THING THEY TELL YOU IN BOOT, right after your name, (3) IT VIOLATES THE GENEVA CONVENTIONS, which the Supreme Court recently reiterated holds the force of US law. If you just want to attack the neocons then fine, but you need to realize the elections will be coming up soon and unless we start posting some truth (especially that can be verified) you are just discrediting the Progressives.

We all know that and while it is cute for discussion, I don’t think you guys really believe our progressive movement will work. It is a game to you instead of anything serious.
It would just as easily worked by saying he claimed Israel could have dropped a nuke and that he called Rosenblum foolish since he was so frustrated.
