than in apparently any other month of the war. “An average of more than 110 Iraqis were killed per day in July, according to figures from the Health Ministry and the Baghdad morgue. At least 3,438 civilians died violently that month, a 9 percent increase over the tally in June and nearly twice as many as in January.”
Go Team Terror!
August 15th, 2006 at 6:35 pmSuccess. Absolute chaos! where once there was some modicum of order.
Is this what Democracy On The March looks like?
August 15th, 2006 at 6:39 pmDuring Americas civil war we had about 3800 per month dead.
August 15th, 2006 at 6:45 pmBUT according to several politicians, Baghdad is safer than DC….and we all know that Congressmen never bullshit with statistics, right?
August 15th, 2006 at 6:51 pm3800 civilians per month? I know some of the fighting was brutal, and the sacking of DC, and things like Sherman’s march to the see etc… but if you are including military and civilian casualites I don’t think it equates Gerald.
Besides, the civil war in Iraq is a vastly different beast from the US civil war.
August 15th, 2006 at 6:52 pmMISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
August 15th, 2006 at 6:55 pmWhat? I thought all the fighting was in Lebanon, and that was over…
Has our media lied and distorted world events again???
/dripping sarcasm

During Americas civil war we had about 3800 per month dead.
Comment by Gerald Gibson — August 15, 2006 @ 6:45 pm
And we all know that history sets its milemarkers by what happens to Americans. Are you suggesting that this isn’t serious enough until 3800 a month die?
Arrogant. Ignorant. Short-sighted.
Or not very well thought out…
August 15th, 2006 at 6:58 pmSounds like a lot of flip-flopping going on…
Adapt and Win.
Possible Civil War.
Fight them over here so we don’t have to fight them over there.
Wait, that last one is secret. It hasn’t been rolled out yet…

August 15th, 2006 at 7:03 pmOoooooh.
Math.
My apologies if this is the case. I guess I just read the numbers without doing the conversion…
I hope youre right. It would make me a lot less angry at the world in general…
August 15th, 2006 at 7:04 pmI wonder though, with the death toll rising, doubling every few (6?) months. It isnt exactly something that reaches the scale of the conflict of the American civil war. But it dose paint an increasingly bleak picture of Iraq and the future for the entire region.
If in two years time and the number reaches or exceeds that of the American civil war. The turely Iraq is finnished.
August 15th, 2006 at 7:12 pm“civil war this, civil war that”….civil war schmivil war!
August 15th, 2006 at 7:26 pmA Pentagon report released at the end of last May revealed that even though the majority of those killed have been Iraqi civilians, the intended targets of those attacks were directed at U.S. military forces, which directly substantiates the charge that it is the presence of the U.S. military that is causing so much of the violence in Iraq. As independent journalist pointed out in The Atlantic last December, once the occupying force, i.e. the United States, finally leaves Iraq, the resistance movement will have nothing to resist against.

August 15th, 2006 at 7:29 pmHere are some figures Gerald’s post urged me to find:
August 15th, 2006 at 7:36 pmUS population 1860: 32 million
Iraq population 2003: 25.175 million
Iraq has 78.67% the population we had, and 89.47% the deaths.
So, more people statistically are dying there each day than did in the U.S. civil war. But remember, Bush has not said this is a civil war, therefore it is not one. Do keep that in mind.
I aim to please.
August 15th, 2006 at 7:42 pmschmivil war!
I love a good schmivil war! You use lots of cool Schmuns and schmives. And drive around in totally awesome schmanks!
August 15th, 2006 at 7:45 pm110 Iraqis is nowhere near enough blood for Cheney to bathe in everyday. How do you expect him to survive on only 110 Iraqis a month, his internal organs are failing at an alarming rate, he needs at least 1000 Iraqis blood a month to survive.
August 15th, 2006 at 8:01 pm“It’s fun to shoot some people….” Lt. Gen. James Mattis, U.S. Marines

August 15th, 2006 at 8:04 pmCorrection on post #20- That independent journalist who wrote about Iraq and the resistance movement fighting in Iraq is Nir Rosen.
August 15th, 2006 at 8:07 pmIf George Bush were a compassionate human being, he would stop this war immediately, since he is responsible for all of these deaths. If George Bush were compassionate he would have trouble sleeping at night, knowing he created the conditions that have lead to all of these deaths. But he’s not compassionate, so he vacations, clears brush, meets with American Idols, plays guitar, reads to children and all of those other very, very important duties and photo ops that a brainless, macho boy president does.
August 15th, 2006 at 8:22 pmHey George! This is a civil war! George! Rummy! Anyone!
*crickets chirping*
F*cking idiots…
August 15th, 2006 at 8:32 pmHeckava Job!
August 15th, 2006 at 9:32 pmIts not a civil war in Iraq. Its just that the US death squads are getting to be much more efficient.
August 15th, 2006 at 10:52 pmMore deaths than 9/11 – utterly tragic.
August 15th, 2006 at 11:08 pm30: bush has a great deal of compassion. He just doesn’t waste it on anyone besides himself.
August 15th, 2006 at 11:14 pmIs this happening?
August 15th, 2006 at 11:55 pmBush has turned Iraq into a living nightmare from Hell > Dubya must resign > PERIOD.
August 16th, 2006 at 3:26 amTo put this into perspective, given Iraq’s population, it’s the equivalent of 1,000 Americans being killed per day, or a 9-11 equivalent every 2 to 3 days. But it is worse than that. The violence in Iraq is widespread and constant over time. What a disaster. And the President and VP, who ran from their military duty during Vietnam, do not appear to have a clue as to how to contain it. It is time for them to resign, or be impeached and convicted of high crimes and misdemeanors.

August 16th, 2006 at 10:25 amA tragic, horrific example of Islamic-upon-Islamic violence. If the Arab islamic world is ever to join the rest of the civillized world in the 21st century, theu must…MUST…put aside their minute differences regarding the best way to worship “Allah” and work together to create a civilized, peaceful society.
The United States and the Coalition has, in overthrowing a monstrous and brutal dictator, handed the Iraqis a golden opportunity to create the first peaceful and civilized Arab democracy. They MUST seize this opportunity. Alas, so far, they are squandering it and letting their petty ethnic and religious differences prevent them from creating a decent country for themselves and their children.
