Salon profiles methods being used in six states, including “new photo I.D. laws, the criminalizing of voter registration drives, and database purges that have disqualified up to 40 percent of newly registered voters from voting.”
Cool! Voter suppression, Diebold conspiracy, and Karl Rove! Too bad all the dead people can’t vote anymore but the Democrats don’t need them anymore.
This is the very ‘cart before the horse’ type of article that creates reality instead of reinforcing it.
Instead of backing up events that have happened, this article projects what WILL happen. This in and of itself isn’t all that sinister. But in an age such as this where information is power, articles like this can help mold and shape what will be through suggestive reasoning. For example: a voter reads that since they can’t (or won’t) get a new photo ID, they cannot vote, so they don’t bother. They don’t bother to rectify their own personal issues and do what is needed to be able to vote. Thus, the article becomes a self-fufilling prophecy of what reality truly is.
We cannot allow the practices noted in this article to stand, true. But we also must not allow articles such as these mold reality. That makes the people writing the articles (and the people who decide what articles are written, wink wink) the keepers of reality. And I do not trust such lofty power to such bungling idiots.
Both parties have been known to manipulate votes if it favors them. The most blatant and latest examples, though, have been via the Republican party in places like Florida and Ohio. Why are they so scared to let qualified people vote? Are they happy that the fewer people that vote the more often it is that their candidates get elected? I wouldn’t be too proud of that.
In 2004, Texas, I registered to vote at one of the local stands at the mall. I checked a month later and found out I was never registered. I suspect they threw away my registration because I listed as a democrat.
Found out later that the booth was run by the local republican party, even though they did not have any sign stating that at the table.
I made a complaint and registered again, luckily in time for that election. As far as I know, nothing came of the complaint I filed.
I was lucky I found out before it was too late, others were not able to vote because they found out too late

The more I read what the founding fathers actually wrote, the more astounded I am about their intelligence, fund of information, insight, and foresight. We Americans are so very lucky to have their work as the basis of our government. Now, if we can only keep our democracy, as (with typical insight) Benjamin Franklin warned us about.
We have vastly improved over our founding fathers as far as wide spread suffrage. Remember in the good old days of the early days of the republic only rich white men could vote.
This effort on the republican part to restrict voters is disgusting. I thought we were suppose to have a “government for the people and by the people” not a government for the rich and by the rich and established. Should someone be denied the vote because they are too poor to have a car? Unable to find birth certificates and marriage certificates?
The number of registered democrats outnumbers registed republicans as of 2005, they need to (a) convince people not to come out to vote, and (b) disqualify as many democrats as they can – or they lose by numbers alone.

no conviction, always the bait and switch.

Instead of alleging Republicans stole the elections, why not just admit the truth? The voters rejected the bankrupt ideas of the Democrats.
Because that’s not the truth, Mr. Big. If yoiu believe it is, perhaps you can explain why exit polls, which used to be the gold standard for prediciting the outcomes of elections, suddenly lost all correlation with the ‘official’ results around 2000.
Instead of alleging Republicans stole the elections, why not just admit the truth? The voters rejected the bankrupt ideas of the Democrats.
Comment by Mr. Big
Because if people don’t have an opportunity to vote, they don’t have an opportunity to choose which ideas they prefer. If the Republican principles include universal suffrage why don’t they encourage voter registration and turnout for all citizens? Universal suffrage == almost every adult citizen is allowed to vote.
So, John, what do you think about the Bush administration. Extremists? Or no? – RealScientist
RealScientist, I’m getting at the fact that any of Republicans’ more moderate policies rarely show up on thinkprogress.org or in the blogs. Is it so inconceivable that Republicans might do the world the occassional good? I guess not because apparently they’re too busy having prayer meetings with Satan.
Instead of alleging Republicans stole the elections, why not just admit the truth? The voters rejected the bankrupt ideas of the Democrats.
Mr. Big, then why do the Republicans LIE about what their ideas actually are? Why do Republicans consistently say one thing and do another? Why do Republicans have to buy off journalists, and employ a host of other known propaganda techniques?
Welcome to Poll Tax 2006! We try to legitimize ourselves under the guise of “national security.”
Well… whatever you want to call us… Republicans need us Poll Taxes to ensure they remain in power.
Until, that is, people learn to vote against their best interests! (A livable minimum wage??? My aunt fannie!!! WE will tell you what a livable minimum wage is!!! After all, we are the deciders!!!)
Without us poll taxes, Republicans would revert to a (more or less) permanent minority… remember the House of Representatives BEFORE 1994?
And if the Dems do sweep into power… what then?? The Republicans’ corruption would be exposed… that’s what!!! And then… after that would come… FAIRNESS… in this country and around the world. SHUDDER
And I do not trust such lofty power to such bungling idiots.
Comment by Ronin Tetsuro
This is not WILL happen.. this is what IS happening RIGHT NOW… I live in Indiana.. and indeed they have made certain things like using banks and getting licenses very difficult always wanting more ID… In addition this summer there has been a crazy problem going on with the DMVs NEW computer system system they decided to put in and they are actually asking people to NOT come to the DMV because of the computer problems only have a couple offices in the state able to handle them. There are many poor people that have never been fired up enough to vote before and when they find out it will cost them about $50 for birth certificates and photo IDs etc… they just spend the money on something else like bills instead of voting.
It is correct to try to keep voting clean, but the timing is fishy and the methods used seem to be more about the methods used than making the voting process better in a realistic way.
No shit. You mind telling that to all of your republican friends?
Name some. Name two things that Bush has done that are moderate. – Spudge_Boy
Give me some examples of substance. Medicare Part D? Disaster. No Child Left Behind? Disaster. Eliminating the estate tax? Disaster. – RealScientist
Hang on while I google some examples, and you google some examples, and whoever finds the most examples to back them up wins! I think this sub-conversation is officially dead seeing as how we’ve reached the offsetting examples stage. I’m just a moderate (who happened to vote against Bush…) who likes to see things from both sides of the fence. I’m out.
Where did I put that birth certificate? Let’s see ,will I have to reregister.? My married name is diffrent than my birth certificate so did the bunch in office change it so I can’t vote now.? Hard to keep up….
Is the war over.? Which war are we on, the one in Iraq or the one against the american public.? Both.? Where are we on Peace and humatarian aid to our own and every one else. Think we use to do that. Didn’t we.?
Great, I found the birth certificate. Now all I have to do is search the government sites to see if I lost my right to use it as part of my ID even though the names don’t match. Could be attached to the Dubi ports deal that was denied and in use any way….Or maybe on the medicare bill that gave millions to HMO’s and Pharmacudical and get’s to charge me more to pramote their mess..Hummmmm. Gotta go and see what right’s I lost while I was sleeping……..Blessings
This harkens back to the poll taxes, and literacy tests in an effort to eliminate the black voter.
Dobbs (with K.Pilgrim) on CNN has been talking up the potentially corrupt Diebold voting machines, which are in greater usage across the country.
I recall that in March, when I mentioned that during the primary election, I was told that I was misinformed and ignorant.
Unfortunately, with the machines already purchased and planned for usage in November, what choice do people have?
Absentee?
Repugs don’t have to cheat in every poll, (that would be too obvious) only the ones that would make a difference.
Hang on while I google some examples, and you google some examples, and whoever finds the most examples to back them up wins!
Yes, that’s generally how this works…if you make claims, you’re usually asked to substantiate them.
I think this sub-conversation is officially dead seeing as how we’ve reached the offsetting examples stage.
Actually, since you’ve failed to post any links to substantiate your claims, we haven’t reached anything even remotely ‘offsetting’ yet…but it doesn’t look like that’s going to prevent you from using this specious claim to justify running away.
I’m just a moderate (who happened to vote against Bush…) who likes to see things from both sides of the fence.
Oh yes…’fair and balanced’…which is why you replied to Conservative from ct’s phonebook-sized strawman post with this:
Good post by ct quoting the all the crazies in the thinkprogress blogs.
Way to prop up that strawman, John…is ‘Conservative from ct’ giving you a cut?
I beg all minorities to prepare to take to the streets and rise awareness .
The republicans should be made to take notice,
We’re not taking this Sh–!
SHOW THEM FOR THE TRUE RACIST THEY ARE!
Only in America do we take this sh– lying down.
All around the world other nations have protested unjust behavior.
What is wrong with us.
WAKE UP BLACK AMERICA
#4 I agree It sounds like their setting people up for another steal. Trying to disenfranchise people from going out and registering/voting. trying to enforce the old ” Why Bother ” stigma that the cards are stacked against me, my vote won’t count.
ACTUALLY I LIKE TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS AND MAKE IMMATUURE INSULTS TO HELP BACK UP MY OPINION!!!!!!1111!!!!!
Back to the discussion, though. It’s common knowledge that we can find a moutain of sources to back us up on both sides of any issue. There are plenty of “experts” on both sides of the fence, and we could quote them until we’re fired from our jobs from wasting so much time online. I’m not taking the “you’re running away” bait.
I don’t think calling out crazy extremists and their opinions is unfair or balanced. That’s kind of the point of being a moderate. I’m not a full friend of either side, but I seem to be a full enemy of both. Now that’s progressive thinking!
whoops, “unfair or UNbalanced…” Forgot an UN. Heh, kind of like our administration. But I shouldn’t make pro-liberal jokes, because I’m obviously getting a cut from Conservative from ct.
It’s common knowledge that we can find a moutain of sources to back us up on both sides of any issue.
Perhaps in the neocon’s world, this is true, but I prefer to operate in the real world, where reality is not redefined moment by moment.
There are plenty of “experts†on both sides of the fence, and we could quote them until we’re fired from our jobs from wasting so much time online.
Interesting how you put the word “experts” in quotes. again, in the real world, that word is usually used without the quotes.
I’m not taking the “you’re running away†bait.
Apparently, you did, as you came back to post again.
I don’t think calling out crazy extremists and their opinions is unfair or balanced.
It is if you don’t substantiate your ‘calling out’ with facts, but you seem to have no patience for that.
That’s kind of the point of being a moderate.
Being a ‘moderate’ doesn’t excuse you from having to substantiate your claims.
But I shouldn’t make pro-liberal jokes, because I’m obviously getting a cut from Conservative from ct.
You win. I have work to do. My opinion is changed, NOT. But that’s the Internet for you. I hope the next election isn’t one of those 50/50 elections that comes down to a few moderates being attacked in these forums. I honestly don’t want the conservatives to win again.
People like John really disgust me. They are the “averagers”. Completely devoid of critical thinking skills and unable to form an opinion of their own, they cover it up by always steering for what they think is the middle, apparently unaware that today’s imaginary middle is far to the right of Richard Nixon. And so the right wing manipulators can lead the averagers by their noses further and further to the right. The averagers have done every bit as much to enable the Bush administration as the religious fascists have (if not more, by seemingly legitimizing the administration).
Good one Left Coast Mike. Lest we forget bush was born in Maine so is a hillbilly red neck or what ever neocon by choice………Drugstore cowboys went out many years ago, oh wait, that doesn’t include drugged self made cowboys…….Never met a horseless cowboy or seen one in action till bush…..Now I have…….Blessings

August 15th, 2006 at 2:01 pmCon from ct, your daughter spurn your advances again?
August 15th, 2006 at 2:07 pmGood post by ct quoting the all the crazies in the thinkprogress blogs. Politics should never be about extremes, either conservative or liberal. Extremist bloggers on both sides only make matters worse. The world is not black and white: it’s in all shades of all colors.
August 15th, 2006 at 2:07 pmVoter suppression is just another way that the Republicans are winning their “war on ideas”.

So, John, what do you think about the Bush administration. Extremists? Or no?
August 15th, 2006 at 2:11 pmjust like a republican… when the going gets rough, make crap up.
no conviction, always the bait and switch.

August 15th, 2006 at 2:13 pmi’ve posted this because it addresses any issues republicans try to switch topics on…. in other words, this post can be placed on any republican blog and it will make sense. thanks ‘republican’ bloggers for making this so terribly funny… if you think my post is foolish…please remember-stop the bait and switch (making crap up)… oh, i forgot – i should not mention ‘terribly’… it only helps with the chicken little ‘the sky is falling’ type of bs that republicans always vomit.
oh, i can’t post on republican blogs?
what is that you say, they’ve disabled comments? from all but registered republicans?

August 15th, 2006 at 2:19 pmInstead of alleging Republicans stole the elections, why not just admit the truth? The voters rejected the bankrupt ideas of the Democrats.
August 15th, 2006 at 2:20 pmtalking about bankrupt…
how the biggest national debt in history going for the republican clan?
screw any more elderly out of their medicare or social security yet?

Because that’s not the truth, Mr. Big. If yoiu believe it is, perhaps you can explain why exit polls, which used to be the gold standard for prediciting the outcomes of elections, suddenly lost all correlation with the ‘official’ results around 2000.
August 15th, 2006 at 2:25 pmBecause if people don’t have an opportunity to vote, they don’t have an opportunity to choose which ideas they prefer. If the Republican principles include universal suffrage why don’t they encourage voter registration and turnout for all citizens? Universal suffrage == almost every adult citizen is allowed to vote.

Nuff said.
August 15th, 2006 at 2:30 pmconservative from ct.
I could not of said it better myself, and I’m NOT being sarcastic!!!
August 15th, 2006 at 2:32 pmRealScientist, I’m getting at the fact that any of Republicans’ more moderate policies rarely show up on thinkprogress.org or in the blogs. Is it so inconceivable that Republicans might do the world the occassional good? I guess not because apparently they’re too busy having prayer meetings with Satan.
August 15th, 2006 at 2:33 pmMr Big sez:

Mr. Big, then why do the Republicans LIE about what their ideas actually are? Why do Republicans consistently say one thing and do another? Why do Republicans have to buy off journalists, and employ a host of other known propaganda techniques?
August 15th, 2006 at 2:33 pmI’m just glad I live in Ohio where everything is on the up and up.
August 15th, 2006 at 2:33 pmNo shit. You mind telling that to all of your republican friends?
August 15th, 2006 at 2:37 pmName some. Name two things that Bush has done that are moderate.
August 15th, 2006 at 2:38 pmWelcome to Poll Tax 2006!
SHUDDER
August 15th, 2006 at 2:38 pmany of Republicans’ more moderate policies
Give me some examples of substance. Medicare Part D? Disaster. No Child Left Behind? Disaster. Eliminating the estate tax? Disaster.
August 15th, 2006 at 2:40 pmAnd I do not trust such lofty power to such bungling idiots.
August 15th, 2006 at 2:47 pmI’m just glad I live in Ohio where everything is on the up and up.

Wow that actually left me laughing .. I hardly ever laugh…
August 15th, 2006 at 2:50 pmHang on while I google some examples, and you google some examples, and whoever finds the most examples to back them up wins! I think this sub-conversation is officially dead seeing as how we’ve reached the offsetting examples stage. I’m just a moderate (who happened to vote against Bush…) who likes to see things from both sides of the fence. I’m out.
August 15th, 2006 at 2:51 pmthat was a really good cop-out… original, even made sense…
August 15th, 2006 at 3:02 pmstill a cop-out…
Where did I put that birth certificate?
August 15th, 2006 at 3:06 pmThis harkens back to the poll taxes, and literacy tests in an effort to eliminate the black voter.
August 15th, 2006 at 3:14 pmDobbs (with K.Pilgrim) on CNN has been talking up the potentially corrupt Diebold voting machines, which are in greater usage across the country.
John sez:
Way to prop up that strawman, John…is ‘Conservative from ct’ giving you a cut?
I’m out.
You most certainly are.

August 15th, 2006 at 3:30 pmUSE PAPER BALLOTS AND TAKE YOUR COUNTRY BACK!!!
August 15th, 2006 at 3:31 pmACTUALLY I LIKE TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS AND MAKE IMMATUURE INSULTS TO HELP BACK UP MY OPINION!!!!!!1111!!!!!
August 15th, 2006 at 3:42 pmwhoops, “unfair or UNbalanced…” Forgot an UN. Heh, kind of like our administration. But I shouldn’t make pro-liberal jokes, because I’m obviously getting a cut from Conservative from ct.
August 15th, 2006 at 3:44 pmJohn sez:
Thanks for the confirmation.
August 15th, 2006 at 3:54 pmYou win. I have work to do. My opinion is changed, NOT. But that’s the Internet for you. I hope the next election isn’t one of those 50/50 elections that comes down to a few moderates being attacked in these forums. I honestly don’t want the conservatives to win again.
August 15th, 2006 at 4:11 pmJohn, you’re another gutless conservative who won’t tell anyone what you reallly stand for.
August 15th, 2006 at 5:07 pmPeople like John really disgust me.
