It’s sad to see all the vitriol spewed over this, Tramm Hudson is actually not a racist. I know him personally, and he has never made a racial comment in my presence. He has never shown anything but respect for all those around him, no ma tter what their skin color. Yes, he did grow up in Alabama, and yes, in the south blacks were often not allowed to use public pools and as a result, did not learn how to swim. I grew up in the eighties, in a small southern town, and even at the local pool in my town, which was at a cheap country club for the lower-middle class, there were zero people of color, despite the town being half African American by population. Obviously they were not allowed to join. And of course there were no private pools in “black part of town”. This was in the eighties! Tramm Hudson’s comment reflects the reality of the south, and though that is a sad reality, it is not a reflection of his personal feelings about black people. For as long as I’ve known him, he has attended a weekly prayer group held by a local black church. In this and in my personal dealings with him, it is clear that he is a man who seeks to rise above the prejudices of the culture in which he grew up.

I should also point out that he is a moderate republican, in a strongly republican district. If he loses the primary, the other republican front runner is Vern Buchanan, who has stated that he believes women should never be allowed to have abortions, zero exceptions, “period.” Hudson at least feels there should be exceptions when the life of the mother is in danger and when the pregnancy is a result of rape, incest or abuse. He also supports practical solutions for illegal immigration, he wants a guest worker program, while Buchanan wants to build a wall. Tramm Hudson is, in short, a reasonable guy who makes practical decisions and doesn’t just toe the party line.

I don’t agree with all of Tramm Hudson’s politics, as I am an anti-forced-birth, secular humanist, but trust me, one place we do agree is on race, and Tramm Hudson is not a racist.

If Mr Big is saying we need to put Barbara Boxer and Al Gore in leadership positions, he may have a good point there.

That said, you can’t ever please the neocons. They want support for a policy even if you doubt it, because criticism undermines the policy they are going to take whether you like it or not. So some of us held our criticism to see if maybe they know what they’re doing after all. Then when it becomes clear they f***ed up (big time) they come back and point fingers at us for not standing against them in the beginning.

You can’t win with them, and I guess you can’t trust what they tell you either.

Next time a conservative tells you to support them for the sake of national unity, think long and hard about that.

In the Sentinel interview, civil rights leader Andrew Young was asked about whether he was concerned Wal-Mart causes smaller, mom-and-pop stores to close.

“Well, I think they should; they ran the `mom and pop’ stores out of my neighborhood,” the paper quoted Young as saying. “But you see, those are the people who have been overcharging us, selling us stale bread and bad meat and wilted vegetables. And they sold out and moved to Florida. I think they’ve ripped off our communities enough. First it was Jews, then it was Koreans and now it’s Arabs; very few black people own these stores.”

Young, a former Democratic Atlanta mayor and U.N. ambassador appointed by Jimmy Carter, was hired by Working Families for Wal-Mart in February.

Many hard-core racists in this thread. No surprise: it’s a liberal site, after all. Did any one of those who casually used terms such as “Bubbas” stop to think that they were ascribing negative aspects (racism) to a group of people (Southern whites) out of bigotry? Of course not, it’s automated behaviour.

And BTW. I used to LIVE in West Virginia. And it is NOT a liberal state. West Virginia is primarly conservative, and they vote Byrd in because the right never opposed him much, because the conservatives in WV love him.

Course this year he could be saying bye bye to that seat if the repuggies have their way.
