1,666: Number of roadside bombs that went off in Iraq in July, the highest monthly total of the war. Seventy percent of those bombs were directed at U.S. troops. “The insurgency has more public support and is demonstrably more capable in numbers of people active and in its ability to direct violence than at any point in time,” said a senior Pentagon official.

Hollywood stars condemn Hezbollah, Hamas. A group of 84 high-profile Hollywood stars, including Nicole Kidman, Michael Douglas, Sly Stallone, and Bruce Willis, took out a full-page advertisement in today’s Los Angeles Times to condemn acts of violence by terrorist groups. “If we do not succeed in stopping terrorism around the world, chaos will rule and innocent people will continue to die,” the ad says.

Opium cultivation in Afghanistan has hit record levels — up by more than 40 percent from 2005 — despite hundreds of millions in counternarcotics money.”

“About half of adults in middle-income families reported serious problems in paying for their health care while even those in more affluent circumstances said they had troubles with medical bills,” a new study by The Commonwealth Fund found.

The Lebanese government ordered army troops to deploy across southern Lebanon under a compromise arrangement that allows Hezbollah to retain some of its arms caches. Meanwhile, Hezbollah “fighters put down their guns and turned into relief organizers.” The Israeli foreign minister and the Bush administration expressed concern that Hezbollah’s intensified relief efforts could strengthen its political standing and future electoral prospects.

One in three U.S. national parks are “choking on pollution,” according to the National Parks Conservation Association.

“There are between 5,000 and 6,000 extremist websites on the Internet, each one encouraging extremists to cultivate relationships with like-minded people,” Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said yesterday. “This radicalization is happening online and can therefore develop anywhere, in virtually any neighborhood, and in any country.”

A University of California, Berkeley study found capping greenhouse gas emissions in the state “would create 17,000 new jobs and add $60 billion to the gross state product by 2020.”

And finally: Summer is here, and for Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN) that means seersucker, grossgrain, and polos in Nantucket: “Perhaps as the next round of elections draw near we can interview Dr. Frist and ask him where he stands on important issues like collar popping and the monogramming of barware.”

What, has Alberto Gonzales only just noticed this now? I mean, sheesh the Republicans have had a web page for years…

And why would “Hollywood Stars” put an ad in the LA paper?
I think they should take their message straight to the terrorists. Up close and personal like “In the Actor’s Studio”

P.S. Notice how the Reverse King Midas effect is working on Bush. Condi gets snubbed a few weeks ago for allowing the Israeli’s to continue bombing Lebanon.

The number 2 man in the UK just reportedly called Bush “crap”.

The Chinese diplomat to the UN said that the US should “shut-up” about China’s military spending. He said China is not in any other country and is not an aggressor and that the US spends more than anyone else…so “Shut-up”.

Remember the Limp-baugh types that were clutching their pearls because “Bill Clinton” made a laughing stock out of the US? Bush has made the US the focus of almost every nations scorn, anger and enmity.

    Heckuva job.

Could Hollywood finally be getting the message that the US needs to fight a WAR against TERRORISTS?

  11. GSD says:

Sandy, comedians Denis Leary and Lenny Clark were in the booth. Youkilis was on 1st base for the sox. Leary asked, “Youkilis, is that Greek?”

Was told by one of the announcers, that Youkilis is Jewish.

So Leary and Clark ran with the ball.

“I hope Mel Gibson doesn’t come around here.”

When Youkilis caught a ball and forced an out Leary yelled “In your face Mel Gibson.”

It was quite funny and refreshing to see.

So we’ve got net nutrality on the table already, and they’ve managed to get the general public pretty apathetic about that. So now they need to step things up a bit by talking about extremists on the Internet. The next step for this kind of Administration is to make 2+2 equal 5 and officially champion Net Nutrality as a way to ‘protect Americans and the world from the ongoing threat of terrorism’. Then the MSM will catch wind of a story where some white teenage girl ALMOST became a suicide bomber because Lamont supporters told her to do it.

I think you can figure out the rest from there. Keep your eyes open, people. These conservative fools are trying to bring society down on our heads in the form of a jail cell.

Ladies and gentlemen, just back from a tea-bagging session with Karl Rove. Jason Hendler is in the house with some more trite attacks on America.

That is all the far-fringe right has left is to attack everyone in America who doesn’t agree with them.

Bush is tanking again. All of the crowing about the British attacks haven’t helped. Folks like Hendler and the rest of the pre-programmed Rovian troll bots haven’t quite digested the fact that most Americans no longer have in Bush or his ability to govern.

So when they attack anyone who disagrees with Bush they are attacking a larger and larger percent of the population.

    That is not very smart.

Fellow TP-ers. The time for hard pushback is beginning. Write letters. Contact friends via e-mail and phone. The Bush/Rove/Coulter Republican Party is in tough shape. Not that the Democrats are any great saviors, but anything but Bush is what is needed now. Washington gridlock is much more favorable to the Bush/Coulter/Republican agenda.

The wingers only know how to deal with things from a point of strength, not weakness. They are weak and now is the time to hit them hard. Use logic and pinted information. Most wingers shrivel under such tactics.

  25. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #15, GSD,

Your polls have not turned into election results for Dems. Typical of Dems, they see correlation and believe it to be cause and effect. Yes, poor approval ratings of the president have correlated to unfavroable mid-term election results for the president’s party in the past, but if you stretch that understanding to mean that all Dems have to do is drive down Bush’s poll numbers to win elections, you are mistaken. If that hypothesis were true, then Busby would have won an election in a district in which the previous Republican went to jail, but her numbers were little different than John Kerry’s in that district.

You will be in a prolonged period of American history in which foreign policy will dominate public interest, and cut & run Dems can’t be trusted to handle foreign policy. Where are the days when Dems would hurl nukes at an enemy which had no nukes of their own and no defense against them?

  29. Ronin Tetsuro says:

I have to agree somewhat with Jason, here.

He’s correct in saying that poll numbers do not convert directly into votes, even though in typical con fashion, he’s stating that is the dem stance when he’s the only one saying it. All of that aside, he is right, which is why GSD posted what he did. Calling for a hard push MEANS getting out and securing votes. I understood that pretty well, since it was clearly outlined by the POINTS OF ACTION listed.

If we could get past using partisan attack methods, then maybe we could get on with the business of supporting our canidates and letting the people decide? Oops, that sounds too much like a democracy, my bad.

  30. Impeachcheneythenbush says:

Jason, those polls were done AFTER the 2004 elections (beginning May 2005). The Lamont-Leiberman primary is more reflective of the national mood change than Busby’s defeat. The defeat of a three-term incumbent Senator trumps is very significant, which is by the Republican machine is so freaked out.

  31. Democratic Soldier says:

22 – And here I thought that all regressives didn’t pay attention to the polls. I guess regressives only use polls when they’re favorable to them.

How about the oh-so very small “bump” in Pres. Bush’s polls after he tried (and failed) to ride the coat-tails of the UK on their successful arrest of terrorists? I guess you don’t want to talk about that poll.

How about the Republican sites that are projecting losses of Republicans to Democrats in the upcoming mid-term election? Don’t want to talk about those polls as well.

I guess the only time a poll is worthy of being mentioned is when it’s anti-Democrat.

Don’t worry, I’m sure that crow will taste good when the regressive Republicans continue losing seats to Democrats.

On CNN this morning there was a report that Bush is going to sign a VERY IMPORTANT pension bill. The report also said it was so weak as to be useless.

When Bush took office the Pension Guaranty Trust Fund had a surplus of 10 Billion. It now has a deficit of 23 Billion.

The first few days in office Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the rest of the neo-cons had a meeting and all government agencies were stripped to the bare bones so that they could wage a war in Iraq. This was even before 911.

They did not want to raise taxes in order to wage war, they wanted to lower taxes for the rich, rob the rest of the people, and still wage their war.

The national debt folks stands at 76 TRILLION. The current budget deficit is 746 BILLION, more than double what the Bushites advertise.

… a prestigious IVY LEAGUE school like Stanford …

Thanks for posting my quote. I stated that I used IVY LEAGUE as a metaphor for TOP RANKED, but it turns out that I used a simile, having inserted the word “like” – my point being that those who meet graduates of TOP RANKED universities typically feel insecure, and do all they can to try to prove they are smarter. I tend not to mention my credentials unless they pertain directly to the discussion, as they did in that particular, or previous, thread.

Vulcinization is the process by which synthetic rubbers solidify. I meant to use the word vulcanism, which can mean any volcanic or geo-thermal process (could be geyser related also).

I do understand urban heat islands. Yes, current theorists state that it is just the retention of solar heat by steel, glass, concrete and higher local concentrations of greenhouse gases in smog. I believe man’s concentrated use of energy in urban areas is a greater contributor than the heat storing capacity of materials. If you don’t accurately identify the main contributors to a problem, you will never identify the correct solution.

Jason, it took you all day to come up with that??? Okay…first : I never quoted you! I was rephrasing Mark’s comment! I added a prestigious IVY LEAGUE school like Stanford See, not your quote, but an addition to Mark’s quote.
If I were to quote you, it would be this “Stanford, an Ivy League school”
Second: It is not vulcanism, it is VOLCANISM. How would an engineer with such expertise in climatology get vulcanization confused with volcanism? Are you a star trek fan? I mean, how would you feel about my credentials (a pharmacist) if I confused anti-pyretic (fever reducing) with pruritus ani (chronic itching of the skin around the anus).

And before Army engineer Jon Fain joined the invasion of Iraq to fight the War on Terror, the neo-Nazi National Alliance member fantasized about fighting a war on Jews. … Military recruiters and base commanders, under intense pressure from the war in Iraq to fill the ranks, often look the other way. Neo-Nazis ‘stretch across all branches of service, they are linking up across the branches once they’re inside and they are hard-core,’ Department of Defense gang detective Scott Barfield told the Intelligence Report. ‘We’ve got Aryan Nations graffiti in Baghdad,’ he added. ‘That’s a problem.’ … ‘Join only for the training, and to better defend yourself, our people, and our culture’ Fain said. ‘We must have people to open doors from the inside when the time comes.’” Is this what our taxpayer dollars are paying for, are we shoring up the military and fortifying the Military Industrial Complex to turn it into an SS brigade? You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about when you say “man’s concentrated use of energy in urban areas is a greater contributor than the heat storing capacity of materials.” The numbers are orders of magnitude apart. Your claim is utterly laughable.

I, too, wonder whether you are being paid to post this rubbish. Was it really you who posted that Bodreaux is your mentor? Note that the term mentor is not the same as idol, and implies a direct working relationship. Do you work for the George C. Marshall Institute?

Jason needs to start thinking about whether he wants to be the last Bush supporter. It’s going to feel mighty isolated there soon, Jason.

By condemning Hezbollah and Hamas do the Hollywood stars endorse what Israel and the US have done to fight this war on terror? I guess we now know which stars voted Republican and still want them in power. What about all the innocent people that have lost their lives at the hands of US soldiers and bombers? How many thousands are there? Don’t they count? Where’s the fricken ad against that? A vote for Republican is a vote for murder.

And as for Net Neutrality, I can foresee the time when the kids of today will say to their kids, “There used to be a time when you could see and do anything on the net without any restrictions. But then the terrorists went and ruined it for everybody. Now we don’t have any choice. Oh well, that’s America.”

Great post’s Madashell………Yep! and to think I use to live 2 city block’s walk from that bunch of crazies in Hayden Lake, Idaho….Would walk my dogs right by their compound and there they were with camo gear, automatic weapons and up on scaffoldings in the trees watching me walk by…That was in the late 70’s and early 80’s….Their true test of war like tactics was putting rattle snakes in their enemy’s mail boxes. I was a blue eyed blond so no problem for me except the wolf whistles…..Fast forward to 2006 and now we have the bush administration aiding and abetting terrorest over there and here…..Blessings …….Peace…

“The insurgency has more public support and is demonstrably more capable in numbers of people active and in its ability to direct violence than at any point in time,” said a senior Pentagon official.”

All that means is we have to be less careful about “civilian” casualties, something that should NEVER have been a concern in the first place in locations like the Suni Triangle. The headchoppers thrive on killing civilians so killing their civilians is in fact called for if not absolutely essential.

My understanding of the news articles, the military recruiters used to screen out such individuals. Not any more. And inner city gangs are promoting a stint in the military as a way to get trained in urban warfare. Our grandkids’ grandkids will be paying for the mess that has been created under Bush’s regime.

I wonder how much of the obscene Corporate profits will be or already has been moved to offshore accounts?
