Iraq Forced To Import Oil To Tackle Shortages»

Paul Wolfowitz, 3/27/03:
pwolf.jpg

There’s a lot of money to pay for this that doesn’t have to be U.S. taxpayer money, and it starts with the assets of the Iraqi people…and on a rough recollection, the oil revenues of that country could bring between $50 and $100 billion over the course of the next two or three years. … We’re dealing with a country that can really finance its own reconstruction, and relatively soon.

AP, 8/17/06:

Iraq has doubled the money allocated for importing oil products in August and September to tackle the country’s worst fuel shortage since Saddam Hussein’s 2003 ouster, a senior Iraqi official said Thursday. Even though Iraq has the world’s third-largest proven oil reserves, it is forced to depend on imports because of an acute shortage of refined products such as gasoline, kerosene and cooking gas. Sabotage of pipelines by insurgents, corruption and aging refineries have been blamed.

    Iraq…. importing oil….

That’s like Wisconsin running out of cheese. Maine importing lobster.

I would like to see a democratic majority in Congress asap, and not for any sense of retribution - someone needs to give us an unbiased assessment of WTF is going on in a country “floating on an ocean of oil” that requires them to import crude.

It’s time for these nut jobs to hand over the keys (and I don’t mean Alan). Every fear pushed down our throats for this war has turned out to be false. This administration has gone far enough in the wrong direction. we need the voices of the average american to rise up over the slanted sound bites and fearmongering rants. “You have nothing to fear but fear itself”. Great words from a great american. Oh yeah, he was also a Democrat.

the twin towers fell on republican watch.

  32. Bluedog49 Says:

Armstrong, do you beleive there were no differences between Gore and Bush? How about between Kerry and Bush? Almost every Democrat favors some form of universal healthcare, rolling back huge tax cuts for the wealthy, more accountability for the Bush administration, beefing up funding for education and helping the poor, re-evaluating our tax policies which encourage off-shoring jobs, and spending more time fighting the real terrorists instead of staying in Iraq. Most Repubs don’t agree with these things. Don’t these things count as differences to you? Here’s an idea: vote for the Dem, give them control of congress, wait a couple of months and then, if you’re not satisfied, complain about the Dems.

  33. Republicans are the fear and smear party Says:

  38. Bluedog49 Says:

armstrong: “and remember, the twin towers fell on republican watch….??? No !!!
On american watch! Not a party issue stupid!”

Sorry, armstrong, but there were huge differences between the way Bush and Clinton dealt with the various threats. When the system was “blinking red” for Clinton in 1999, he went nuts. He ordered the heads of the CIA, NSA and the FBI to meet with him every week. He exorted the leaders to “shake the trees” in their respective orgainizations to keep people vigilant. The millenium bombing plot was thwarted. When Bush took over, he ignored the suggestions from Clinton’s people that they should concentrate on bin Laden. When he was presented with a breifing titled “bin Laden determined to strike in the U.S.” he said “alright you covered your ass” to the CIA officer making the presentation and went back to his 30 day vacation. His administration ignored 55 separate FAA messages that dealt with possible terrorist activity. The worst attack on American soil in history happened on Bush’s watch.

This is a hypothetical. Let’s stick to the facts, shall we?

9/11 happened under Pres Bush’s watch. The Iraq invasion and occupation happened under Pres Bush’s watch. The current gigantic deficit has occurred under Pres Bush’s watch and as a consequence of his reckless domestic and foreign policies.

Republicans have spent all this time telling us they are in charge, that Pres Bush is the leader, and that any success was thanks to him and his party. Now that things are turning sour, it’s everyone’s fault? Riight.

  43. Bluedog49 Says:

So, Mighty A, I take it by your post that history is irrelevant. Is that your argument. I could have sworn I heard somebody say, “those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.”

  44. hellinabucket Says:

What would be different #48 is the covers will be blown off this administrations fear machine. Billions won’t be thrown into a country half way around the world when budgets for homeland security are being cut. New Orleans will be addressed as a national problem and proper time and resources will be put into rebuilding it instead of empty promises.

If a war is immenant, then a national consensus and sacrifice will be openly discussed instead of tax cuts.

    That is just for starters.

  58. Bluedog49 Says:

Mighty, the facts speak for themselves. The WTC was first bombed in ‘93, barely 30 days into Clinton’s two terms. No attack on American soil occured for the next 7 years. Nine months after Bush took over, the largest terrorist attack in history occured. Repubs blamed Clinton. Funny though, there is absolutely no record of anyone in the Clinton adminsitration blaming George HW Bush for the first attack. I guess that’s just one of the many differences between Repubs and Dems.

Staying the course is CLEARLY NOT WORKING - and these idiots are so blind, so DELUSIONAL, that they don’t even realize it. Instead all they have is to DISCREDIT what WE KNOW HAS TO HAPPEN IF HUMANITY IS TO SURVIVE.

You know, if the German people ACTUALLY KNEW what HITLER’s nazi party was up to, of which THEY DID NOT - since the media was OWNED, LOCK, STOCK, AND BARREL by the nazi’s. They perfected the whole propaganda game, and it worked. If there is one good thing about the USA, is the fact we can go seek the truth from REPUTABLE SOURCES, instead of the MSM that is owned LOCK, STOCK, AND BARREL, by the lemmings. At LEAST WE HAVE THAT!

    “Repubs blamed Clinton.”

Republican’s blamed Clinton for not being serious about the al Qaeda threat and international terrorism in general for eight years. I don’t blame Clinton for the first WTC attack, although anyone who doesn’t lay partial blame for 9/11 on Clinton is fool. Bush share part of the blame too, I agree.

  96. madashell Says:

This whole topic does not even suprise me - none of what they do surprises me anymore. What are we to do if the electorate in this country just don’t get it, don’t pay attention, don’t care, believe in the rapture, and are just plain nonthinkers? I hope and pray that November will go our way - because otherwise, we are doomed. In six short years…..we are getting closer and closer to oblivion, and damn, I will fight tooth and nail from keeping that from happening. Even if it means leaving my beloved country.

  97. Bluedog49 Says:

OK, Tracy, you got me on a technicality. Those embassies are “american soil.” Still, you have to admit, if you ask 10 Bush supporters what they’re most proud of, all 10 will say “he’s kept us safe.” The reason I think that is silly is that by that argument, Clinton was more successful. I do agree with you that both administrations share blame, but I maintain that the record shows that the Clinton administration was much more engaged in the effort than Bush was pre-9-11. In addition, Clinton actually tried to kill bin Laden, while Bush let him off the hook. And, Tracy, let’s not forget the Republican congress’s part in all this. During the time Clinton was attempting to deal with terrorism, Repubs called it “wagging the dog” and forced him into depositions about oral sex. What did republicans in congress do to help Clinton with the war on terror?

“The reason I think that is silly is that by that argument, Clinton was more successful.”

How many terrorist attacks against U.S. interests happened after the 1993 WTC attacks on Clinton’s watch? First their was the 1993 WTC attack, then their was the 1995 attack outside the U.S. military HQ in Saudi Arabia, then the Kobar towers attack, then there was the 1998 Kenya embassy bombings and finally then there was the 2000 USS Cole bombing. I don’t think that body counts should play into this comparison, however the number of seperate attacks should.

“In addition, Clinton actually tried to kill bin Laden, while Bush let him off the hook.”

Clinton said he had no legal way to hold bin Laden after the Sudanese government offered him to the Saudis in the interm. BTW are you trying to say the Bush INTENTIONALLY let bin Laden go in the mountain’s of Tora Bora? I hope not.

  123. Marty Says:

If you would actually read what it says….

Note that it DOES NOT SAY IRAQ IS IMPORTING OIL!!!

It says that they are importing MORE oil PRODUCTS than they used to. They don’t have the refining capacity to handle their demands for gasoline and diesel and such. And they NEVER HAVE!

The massive construction going on in that country is certainly bumping up their demand for fuel products in addition to the shortage that they usually have.

They care about producing oil, not refining it. They are cranking out oil and reeling in big bucks for every barrel of it.

Does Alaska import oil products? Probably. Other than the fact that your shipping costs for crude oil are lower, why would you build a refinery in Alaska where you have to deal with really high prices for everything (labor, parts, heating, chemicals, etc) when you could build one on the coast in another state and just ship the fuel to Alaska?

It surprised me that so many people would have missed the fact that this is more or less a non-story and would crank out so many comments that are clearly in violation of the Terms of Use of this site.

That pleasing right wing tale is contradicted by the 9-11 commission report. They found no evidence to prove that this happened. And, yes, the Bush administration intentionally diverted funds and military manpower away from the hunt for bin Laden in Tora Bora. In fact, they illegally diverted $700 million in funding to Iraq without congressional approval which, last time I checked, is a constitutional crime worthy of impeachment.

Reading all the comments on this page gives one the impression that what is going on in Iraq is taken quite light-heartedly and just talk, talk and talk - I guess that so long as it’s happening across the oceans, it’s not our problem, really. DO something about it. Further up, someone said that if Bush continues with this, the Iraqis may soon need to import sand. Looking at the way things are going, if Americans continue to take what’s going on in the world so lightly, it may soon be necessary to import brains to the U.S. because these seem to be lacking.

  140. Andrew Says:

It’s not oil, it’s oil products they are short on.

Iraq exports crude oil, they only have refining capacity for 700,000 bpd, which seems to be running at only half capacity.

    http://www.denverpost.com/energy/ci_4602008

CIA estimates (https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/iz.html#Econ) they consume 351,500 bpd, which should be about the half capacity rate stated above. Therefore they should be near balence.

The money our friend wolfie is talking about is from the export of crude, which, again using CIA numbers, is about 2 million bpd.

    now for math

2 million barrels minus 350,000 consumed domestically
= 1,650,000 barrels per day being exported

    1.65 million bpd * 61$ US / barrel = 100.65 million US$ per day

Try thinking in terms of apples.

Wolfie says that Iraq can export the many apples that grow there.

The second article points out that there is a shortage in apple sauce, apple jus, and fruit roll ups.

Neither comments on the factories needed to make apple sauce, apple jus, or fruit roll ups.
