It's not oil, it's oil products they are short on.

Iraq exports crude oil, they only have refining capacity for 700,000 bpd, which seems to be running at only half capacity.

http://www.denverpost.com/energy/ci_4602008

CIA estimates (https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/iz.html#Econ) they consume 351,500 bpd, which should be about the half capacity rate stated above. Therefore they should be near balence.

The money our friend wolfie is talking about is from the export of crude, which, again using CIA numbers, is about 2 million bpd.

now for math

2 million barrels minus 350,000 consumed domestically
= 1,650,000 barrels per day being exported

1.65 million bpd * 61$ US / barrel = 100.65 million US$ per day

Try thinking in terms of apples.

Wolfie says that Iraq can export the many apples that grow there.

The second article points out that there is a shortage in apple sauce, apple jus, and fruit roll ups.

Neither comments on the factories needed to make apple sauce, apple jus, or fruit roll ups.

"They found no evidence to prove that this happened."

That is false.

"Sudan did offer to expel Bin Ladin to Saudi Arabia and asked the Saudis to pardon him."

"Yet both Berger and Clarke also said the lack of an indictment made no difference.
Instead they said the idea was not worth pursuing because there was no chance that
Sudan would ever turn Bin Ladin over to a hostile country. If Sudan had been serious,
Clarke said, the United States would have worked something out."

Whoa. Miss a few days, and a new whacko shows up. Who/what is this Armstrong/Sandy with the 3 second attention span and the ample supply of crystal-meth? Holy crap, Out of 251 messages here, I'd say about 130 of them are Armstrong/Sandy. This isn't a discussion, it's an example of someone's delusions having too much power of them.

<em>It surprised me that so many people would have missed the fact that this is more or less a non-story and would crank out so many comments that are clearly in violation of the Terms of Use of this site.

Comment by Marty — August 18, 2006 @ 4:28 pm </em>

I guess you're right Marty, but to be honest, I never throrougly read the Terms of Use myself. This one caught my attention...and I'm thus left wondering....what is the purpose of this (or any other) blog?

Reading all the comments on this page gives one the impression that what is going on in Iraq is taken quite light-heartedly and just talk, talk and talk - I guess that so long as it's happening across the oceans, it's not our problem, really. DO something about it. Further up, someone said that if Bush continues with this, the Iraqis may soon need to import sand. Looking at the way things are going, if Americans continue to take what's going on in the world so lightly, it may soon be necessary to import brains to the U.S. because these seem to be lacking.

Tracy: "Clinton said he had no legal way to hold bin Laden after the Sudanese government offered him to the Saudis in the interm. BTW are you trying to say the Bush INTENTIONALLY let bin Laden go in the mountain’s of Tora Bora?"

That pleasing right wing tale is contradicted by the 9-11 commission report. They found no evidence to prove that this happened. And, yes, the Bush administration intentionally diverted funds and military manpower away from the hunt for bin Laden in Tora Bora. In fact, they illegally diverted $700 million in funding to Iraq without congressional approval which, last time I checked, is a constitutional crime worthy of impeachment.

the only path left for the troll is an attempt to hi-jack the thread to shut down productive conversation

If you would <strong>actually read what it says</strong>....

Note that it <strong>DOES NOT SAY IRAQ IS IMPORTING OIL!!!</strong>

It says that they are importing MORE oil PRODUCTS than they used to. They don't have the refining capacity to handle their demands for gasoline and diesel and such. And they NEVER HAVE!

The massive construction going on in that country is certainly bumping up their demand for fuel products in addition to the shortage that they usually have.

They care about producing oil, not refining it. They are cranking out oil and reeling in big bucks for every barrel of it.

Does Alaska import oil products? Probably. Other than the fact that your shipping costs for crude oil are lower, why would you build a refinery in Alaska where you have to deal with really high prices for everything (labor, parts, heating, chemicals, etc) when you could build one on the coast in another state and just ship the fuel to Alaska?

It surprised me that so many people would have missed the fact that this is more or less a non-story and would crank out so many comments that are clearly in violation of the Terms of Use of this site.

"The reason I think that is silly is that by that argument, Clinton was more successful."

How many terrorist attacks against U.S. interests happened after the 1993 WTC attacks on Clinton's watch? First their was the 1993 WTC attack, then their was the 1995 attack outside the U.S. military HQ in Saudi Arabia, then the Kobar towers attack, then there was the 1998 Kenya embassy bombings and finally then there was the 2000 USS Cole bombing. I don't think that body counts should play into this comparison, however the number of seperate attacks should.

"In addition, Clinton actually tried to kill bin Laden, while Bush let him off the hook."

Clinton said he had no legal way to hold bin Laden after the Sudanese government offered him to the Saudis in the interm. BTW are you trying to say the Bush INTENTIONALLY let bin Laden go in the mountain's of Tora Bora? I hope not.
