“Three months since the signing of a tenuous peace deal, Sudan appears to be preparing a major military offensive in its troubled Darfur region, aid workers are increasingly at risk, and the population ‘may have to relive the horrors of late 2003 and early 2004, and hundreds of thousands of lives will be at risk,’” according to a top U.N. official.

August 18th, 2006 at 9:36 amTEBNIN, Lebanon, Aug 18, 2006 (AFP) – Kneeling in the rubble, the deminer gently handled a tiny metallic tube, trying to defuse one of the thousands of bomblets littering southern Lebanon.
These deadly leftovers of weeks of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas continue to kill and maim nearly a week after both sides silenced their guns, creating what one munitions expert called a “humanitarian catastrophe” as thousands displaced by the war return home.
“This has the potential to be a huge humanitarian issue,” said Marc Garlasco, senior military analyst at Human Rights Watch.
“People are coming back to their homes, they’re hugging and kissing and glad just to have survived and then there are bombs going off,” he said.
Just hours after the announcement of a cessation of fighting on Monday, one civilian was killed and six others wounded when Israeli cluster bombs exploded in the southern village of Ansar.

I second that. This is a person (Jason) who thinks Stanford is an Ivy league school, and who ascertained that global warming may be due, in part, to a process of vulcanization, which was later pointed out to be chemical process of curing rubber (making it harder). His rebuttal? he meant vulcanism (volcano “sperwing” sulfur), which was spelled wrong. Volcanism is the correct spelling. For one with such a high(er) degree, he sure makes many errors. And for the life of me, I really don’t know how a scholar with a masters in Engineering could confuse vulcanization with volcanism.

Yes, sad, but also rather dangerous. It’s obvious by now that we’ve become desensitized to ‘terror threats’ that have been successfully ‘foiled’ by the administation and its allies, so in order to keep us at the fever-pitch of terror that has served them so well, the neocons will be forced to up the ante.
A few months ago, I made a prediction: that there would be another major ‘terrorist plot’ within months, and that it would prove to be as bogus as all the previous ‘terrorist plots’ have been.
That prediction has been realized, but the ‘plot’ has failed to produce the required effect. Whether Americans are catching on, or are just getting numb is a subject for further debate (I myself believe that it is a combination of the two), but the end result is the same: the phony ‘foiled terror plots’ are no longer sufficient to motivate us.
With this in mind, I make another prediction: expect another terrorist plot soon, and expect this plot to be at least partially successful. In short, expect fatalities.
When it does come to pass, remember who you heard it from first.

August 18th, 2006 at 10:23 amWhat Jason has actually said about urban heat islands is that the heat released by energy consumption, i.e. heating buildings, running light bulbs, driving cars, etc., is responsible for climate change. He has said this repeatedly, even though I have informed him again and again that he doesn’t have the slightest clue about the subject. Now, when was the last time you stepped 20 feet away from your house in winter and could feel the heat pouring off of it? This release of heat is utterly inconsequential, which should be obvious to even a layman. The urban heat island effect happens because building materials (asphalt, concrete, etc.) absorb and hold a lot more heat than greenery. This effect is powered by radiation from the sun, which utterly overwhelms the energy we release (the earth receives approximately 10,000 times the energy flux that we consume globally). Messing with radiation effects, i.e. by creating a bunch of highly absorbing roads and parking lots, can have a sizable local effect. Messing with radiation effects by blanketing our atmosphere with highly absorbing CO2 is having a pronounced global effect.
Jason is a fraud.

August 18th, 2006 at 11:09 amI guess Jason’s got the duty today.
Well, Jason, let’s tap the ball right back over into your court. In 25 words or less (I don’t think that’s overly restrictive. It’s much more than a soundbite.), please tell us what the Republican plan is for winning the War on Terror.
While you’re working on your response, it might be helpful to bear in mind that pulling troops out of a country that did harbor terrorists (Afghanistan), sending them to invade a country that didn’t have any terrorists (Iraq), and making nice with another country that harbors terrorists (Pakistan) has not been working too well. In fact, the number of terrorist incidents has climbed ever since the invasion. Our invasion of Iraq and our conduct while occupying that country has been an effective recruiting tool for more terrorists in more places around the world than ever before.
We could get into that whole “making us safe from terrorism” argument and talk about how the Republicans have shot down every attempt by the Democrats to protect ports, chemical plants, and N-plants from terrorist attacks, but let’s not get sidetracked.
You want the Democrats’ plan for dealing with terrorism? First step: Get the goddam Republicans out of the way so we can actually start doing something to protect ourselves and stop making more enemies around the world. Maybe if we stop giving the rest of the world the finger, we could get a little more help from them in finding terrorists BEFORE they try something. Right now it looks like the UK is all that stands between us and another attack.

And while you are at it, name 20 members of Congress who are on the record saying that their vote for AUMF included warrantless wiretapping. Include sources.
Finally, please explain why Bush isn’t bitching that the FISA court harms the hunt for terrorists that need to be tracked domestically since wiretapping them requires a warrant.

Ahhhh…those were the good ol’ days indeed. Until satellite dishes came along, my grandparents, who lived on top of a mountain in SW VA, got 2 channels…CBS and NBC…and could bring in ABC from Huntington, WV when the weather was just right.
As for my youth, I think 13 channels were the tops, and that was on cable. I spent many afternoons watching reruns of Superman and Batman. Earlier in the day, if I was out of school, it was Guiding Light and The Edge of Night, two of my babysitter’s favorite soaps.
August 18th, 2006 at 11:35 amThe next time they show clips of him on TV, I ask you to watch his body language. Look at how often he looks at the camera. It’s as if he’s checking to make sure it’s pointed at him.

, He was arested in Thailand, and they have a traditional “perp walk”. They parade anyone arested in front of the press, giving them all good shots of the person, and they do not allow them to cover their head.
August 18th, 2006 at 11:41 amDid anyone catch this? We just had basically a world wide breaking news story about a plane with a bomb on it! No wait, it was a letter about a bomb on board. No wait….nevermind. You now can return to regularly scheduled deluge of Jon Benet Ramsey, 24/7

Think Progress editors, if you have a problem with me, tell me what it is, and we’ll settle it. Abusing your editorial powers to take cheap shots at me is beneath you.

August 18th, 2006 at 12:12 pmWayne and all, the little wimp that has confesed to the JonBonette murder is an attention getter, my guess. A sicko ofcourse and wanna be petafile perhaps. Sad thing is if he is to go to trial because of the mass coverage he would likely get off even “if” found guilty….Yesterday was a total rerun off and on all day with long hours of tapes from ten years ago to present….Disgusting mess…..
Camp david new’s flash and bush blather, more of the same and be sure to bring up the Harley junket along with two other entrpeneres in business..Lebanon and his views on any thing are always a total wast of time..His bosses, rove/ cheney and others should put a muzzle on him and leash to put him back in his cage in Crawford…..Blessings..Peace
August 18th, 2006 at 12:13 pmThe idiot did call attention to Harley upping the number of bikes they make…but FAILED to mention that Ford cut the number of Autos they make by a larger number that all the bik4es Harley builds, and it takes MORE workers to bnuild a car than Bike, or the fact that BOTH ford and GM are closing plants and cutting production…cause if he has a job the economy must be great from where he sits.
August 18th, 2006 at 12:25 pmMeanwhile back at the ranch and on to reality….Is ” As the world Turns” still on the soap list.? Been years since I caught a slice of that. Since this merry bunch of bombers in charge have taken control I have been busy watching ” Baghdad burn’s and Lebanon limps along”..Damn I miss the Clinton years when I could get 5 jobs with good wages if I had the energy to do them and when gas was $1.00 a gallon…..Oop’s, better yet when JFK was in and it was .20 cent’s a gallon and I was only spending $4.00 a week for work and play..Ah! the good old days before the waramonging drunks, druggies, liers and thieves took control of our lives…Tell later.Off to hug trees and pick berries..Blessings, Peace…
August 18th, 2006 at 12:54 pmBeing from Britian, maybe Prescott doesn’t understand that cowboys actually ride horses. Bush is afraid of horses. He wears a cowboy hat and boots, but you’ve never seen him riding a horse. Here in the U.S., we call that a “poser.”
August 18th, 2006 at 1:06 pmThe biggest terrorist attack on our soil happened on Bush’s watch. The evidence is that he didn’t pay much attention to the threat before the attack. And Hendler thinks this is naturally a big plus for Repubs. Some professionals would call that delusional.
August 18th, 2006 at 1:08 pmWhy don’t they make that line at the airports for “Muslim TERROTISTS only.” Then they could be moved to the Police wagons and sent directly to jail. With the terrorist threat now gone we could do away with all the useless security checks. There will be some costs, however, we will have to pay for counselling for those Security Guards with foot fetishes that no longer have shoes to smell.
August 18th, 2006 at 1:09 pmA Muslim line??? Do Chechens, who often are light-skinned and blue-eyed, have to be in the line. What about Mohammed Ali — does he need to get in the Muslim line? What color is a Muslim? Do all Muslims have brown eyes? Are there any Asian Muslims?
August 18th, 2006 at 2:01 pmWe ought to have an Amish line as well. At least in Ohio and Pennsylvania. At the hitching rail where they tie up their buggies.
August 18th, 2006 at 2:30 pmYou can’t be too careful.

Are there any Asian Muslims?
Comment by Bluedog49 — August 18, 2006 @ 2:01 pm
Yes, there are. The population in both Malaysia, and Indonesia is predominantly Muslim. After them there are Muslim minorities in the Philippines, and Thailand, two Asian countries that which happen to have Islamic separatist movements they call “terrorists”.
August 18th, 2006 at 3:05 pmthe key question that nobody is asking is, “do Americans approve of Bush’s handling of the Jon Benet case?”
August 18th, 2006 at 3:12 pmTHis guy who confessed to the JonBenet murder, I have a feeling he is just another nut job, and really didn’t do it. I am anxious to see if my “feeling†is correct. Seems you have that inclination also?
Comment by For Truth
Hi For Truth, I hope we’re wrong. I hope he’s the guy, for the family’s sake. I haven’t been able to do much reading on it, but do you think a guy like that, someone who says he’s “in love” with that child, could maintain for 10 years before slipping? I’m not a pro like you, but this feels wrong.

We can add boozer and loser too.
August 18th, 2006 at 3:37 pmI, too, believe that this guy did not kill JonBenet Ramsey. He said he picked her up from school that day. She was killed the day after Christmas, so that is extremely unlikely. I just wish the media would not spend hours and hours telling us that they don’t know anything for certain.
Instead of even a minute on the Ramsey case (and Keith Olbermann, if you or someone on your staff is reading this), why not devote the time to explaining to people why the warrantless wiretapping ruling is so important? Explain how the President and Vice President (who once shot a 78-year-old man in the face and then sent his friend out to lie about it) have been violating the Constitution pretty much since the day they took office. Help Congress get the support of the people for investigations by detailing the many violations of their oaths of office and abuses of power that Bush and Cheney have committed. That would be a far more useful service to their viewers than spending an hour telling us we really don’t know anything more about who killed JonBenet Ramsey than we did ten years ago.
August 18th, 2006 at 3:53 pmFYI, JABBS has an article on other airports discarding potential “liquid explosives.” Bunch of B.S.
