Not really. It just shows that liberals will try to make some artificially made up metric to push their anti-Bush agenda. While formally declared WWII hostilities between the US and Japan/Germany only went from Dec 41 to Aug 45, Roosevelt was sending men and machinery under lend-lease agreements and expeditionary forces to Europe and Asia as early as 1939. After the end of formal hostilities, we militarily occupied Japan until 1952 (and Okinawa until 1972). We also formally occupied Germany, and didn't release the last of over 100,000 Nazi sympathizers from prison, until 1955. At the beginning of both occupations, a significant amount of "Payback" was delivered to both Japanese and Germans. So ANY attempt to compare 4 years of OIF with 16 years of WWII in terms of time, numbers, bodies, costs, is completely off the mark and this thread has no relevance except to make liberals find anything to justify their reason for being. Time to move on to another one.

1) The last WWII soldier didn't stop fighting until 1974, hiding out in the philippines.

2) We are still "Occupying" both Germany, Japan, and the former Yugoslavia.

Bush never wanted a short war. All he thinks about is getting the taxpayers' money to his friends in the Defense Department. Don't call this a war on terror. The Chinese government terrorises its people and Bush can't even open his mouth because he does exactly the same! History will prove the US to be wrong... again.

#29: I’m sure the timeline could have been cut if we had been a little less indiscriminate of who, what, and when we carpet bombed the entire country… better yet, turn it into a large glass parking lot.

So, is this what you're proposing?

86, You're right about it not including the last 3 months. I was just saying how your post sounded. I've heard 90% of communication is non-verbal. However, on these boards, verbal is all we have. That makes it easy to mis-read someone's intent.

(Briseadh:) Your post #61 came across as a nit-picky attempt at discrediting the topic of the thread instead of expressing a difference in opinion over which date to consider the actual start date of the United State’s full involvement in WWII.

Discrediting the topic? No way. I just thought the numbers didn't include the last three months of WW II. My bottom line (so to speak) was: Not exactly, but we’re pretty sure to get there yet.

It hadn't even occurred to me to consider a start date other than Pearl Harbor; that's why I didn’t say that in the first place.

#79, Zero, then why didn't you say that in the first place? Bottom line, WWII ended when the Axis powers surrendered. Anybody seeing Iraq surrendering within our natural lifetime? So far, the only plan for victory put forth by Bush is "stay the course" for as long as he is President. He seems to be quite content to let thousands of people die just so He doesn't have to admit He screwed up.

To Jerry - My favourite was Dickie Pearl's statement that within a year of the invasion they would have a square in Baghdad with a statue of Gorge Bush and named after the man who served his country in the Vietnam period in his own way - unlike that fraud Kerry.

There are two reasons that the war in Iraq is not going to end any time soon.

1. The Iraqis don’t want it to end. They know that if they “stand up” and the US soldiers leave, the money from the US pouring into that country will eventually stop. They don’t want their sugar daddy to leave. They will milk this for every penny they can.
2. Military contractors, including Halliburton, don’t want it to end. They are making a lot of money on this war. Stop the war and the money stops.

The only way that the war is going to end is for the US to give the Iraqis a deadline for departure. Once they realize that the sugar daddy is moving out then you will see them standing up real fast. We can not be expected to baby-sit the Iraqis forever while they have a civil war.

We have been in Iraq almost as long as we fought World War II. It’s time to give a deadline and leave.

Briseadh na Faire @ 65 and 67 --

... the United States didn’t declare war on Japan until 12/08/1941.

Then again, some say, “On December 7, 1941, following the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, the United States declared war on Japan. Three days later, after Germany and Italy declared war on it, the United States became fully engaged in the Second World War.” ... That would put the start date as 12/11/1941.

The way I figure it, to be bombed and have the Pacific fleet sunk (at Pearl Harbor, 12/7/41) was to be pretty darn fully engaged. After that, the actual declarations of war were only a formality.

And the article linked to which started the thread stated "The war in Iraq has lasted three days longer than US involvement in World War II. " In other words, the five days mentioned above is a typo.

However, Zero does have a point. The article cited to only mentions to the end of hostilities in Europe and against Germany.

Thus a more accurate statement would be that Bush and his "coallition of the willing" has been fighting a war of agression against Iraq for three days longer than it took the Allies to defeat Italy, Germany and their European Allies.

And we have so much more potent weapons now than was available 60 years ago.

As the article said, "In case you'd forgotten, George W. Bush declared "Mission Accomplished" aboard an aircraft carrier over three years ago.

"In the battle of Iraq," Bush said, "The United States and our allies have prevailed."

Somebody forgot to tell the Iraqis.
