Forgetting Katrina victims.

By Faiz Shakir on Aug 19th, 2006 at 4:20 pm

Forgetting Katrina victims.»

The AP writes a detailed analysis of Bush’s failure to follow-up on his promises after Huricane Katrina. “The job of clearing debris left by the storm remains unfinished, and has been plagued by accusations of fraud and price gouging. Tens of thousands of families still live in trailers or mobile homes, with no indication of when or how they will be able to obtain permanent housing. Important decisions about rebuilding and improving flood defenses have been delayed. And little if anything has been done to ensure the welfare of the poor in a rebuilt New Orleans.”

  1. Opie Says:

That the media has so poorly reported on what little this administration has done is a comment on the both the media and the administration’s incompetence.

  2. Texas Dem Says:

Had the only victim of Katrina been a 6-year old white girl from a wealthy family in Colorado, I guess the media would be all over this. More energy is being put into a 10-year old story there, than a 10 month old story in New Orleans.

Add it to the list that Democrats should be talking about EVERY DAY.

  3. Jason Gooljar Says:

After reading Douglas Brinkley’s book The Great Deluge i’m more focused on the injustice that happened with Katrina than ever. I will not allow myself to forget.

  4. you got islamofascism in my christofascism Says:

Put government in the hands of people who hate governing and love killing…how’s that goin’ for ya America?

  5. Ho Chi Minh Says:

Sorry New Orleans, all the money to rebuild you has been spent in Iraq-Bush.

  6. Jerry Says:

The federal goverment is a big, bloated machine. You are fooling yourself if you ever thought it was effiecent.

The state and local goverments bear more of the responsiblity here, though, to clean up debris. That’s why they collect all of those taxes.

  7. Jerry Says:

I hope you are mad at Ray “School Bus” Nagin, for failing to evacuate the city before the storm.

  8. God is a Nihilist Says:

White people in pensacola and gulf shores never got paid any attention.

  9. you got islamofascism in my christofascism Says:

You remember that, #6 when some massive disaster that overwhelms state and local government wrecks your house and leaves you and your children homeless and hungry. You can write in from an alley somewhere while your wife hunts down rats for lunch. But you are right in that W has indeed made federal government big and bloated; also completely incompetent to help people in need

  10. GSD Says:

Is Bush going to subcontract recovery work out to Hezbollah?

They appear more competent than the Bush/Coulter Republican run federal government.

  11. Fascinated by the stupidity Says:

The article is a fascinating read, it would benifit some of you to actually read the article.

  12. Clyde the Ripper Says:

In is my biased opinion that the Bushco never had any intentions of helping the poor blacks in NO before or after the storm. They gave it lip service and photo-ops but the complete disregard of the thousands stranded during the storm and the lack of any progress at all in the poorer sectors afterwards is proof of their true intentions. There is no recourse for the poor blacks, they won’t be helped by the Bush administration at any republican level of Government. The only recourse the caring citizens of this Country has is at the ballot box–an honest one for a change.

  13. purvis ames Says:

Hezbollah is handing out twelve thousand dollars apiece to the people who lost their homes in Lebanon. Maybe the idiot Boy Emperor should take a cue from the “terrorists” but he probably thinks that helping out the peope of New Orleans is equivalent to supporting al Qaeda. What kind of filth is running this country?

  14. Ho Chi Minh Says:

#13 Purvis; What kind of filth is running this country?

    The WORST kind.

  15. Sharon Cox Says:

Good one GSD……Think it was cheney’s group Hallasperton that did the bid, remember when cheney was on vacation in Wyoming and bush also eating cake…Bush came back with his hat in his lap and cheney came back with the no bid contract. Think all the money is gone and who know’s where, just like all of their contracts. Spoiled food and water to the troop’s and all…..This merry bunch of waramongers get’s away with murder by the thousands, stealing by the billions and snatching civil rights at the point of an automatic weapon……….Still thousands of trailers for the people in N.O. that are locked up and not in use………Bull shit bush has been, drunk, stoned and AWOL his entire life and we and our country now must live with the shame and devastation he and his ilk have caused……..Blessings…….Peace, demand it.

  16. Jamie in Oregon Says:

Why have we failed to frame this as the utter disregard of fundamental Christian values?

  17. Inkadinkadont Says:

What’s the difference between American communities destroyed by Hurricane Katrina with promises of being rebuilt, and Iraqi communities destroyed by Bush/Cheney’s military invasion with promises of being rebuilt?

  18. Jackie Says:

Well would you buy a used car George W. Bush as we know he lies at will. The people of the world knew he was a liar before Americans would admit it. Now Americans know King George lies at will and he can’t be trusted. The victims of Katrina have to wait until the United States gets a real President and new elected officials before the clean up can begin.

  19. Your Conscience Says:

This is the direct cause of putting all your eggs in one basket. Too bad that basket is Iraq and the eggs are deviled.

Is there anything that bush touches that does NOT turn to shit.

Review his previous four CEO positions before playing as a politicians. ALL FOUR COMPANIES WENT BANKRUPT.

  20. dlet Says:

History will remember this as part of the legacy of George Bush.

  21. WalterTheMan Says:

    #19 - Your Conscience,
So also did a state and a nation.

  22. proudleftists Says:

Racism in the Bush Administration ! Racism in America ! Only America hating lefties can believe that !

  23. Not surprised Says:

The so called despotic Hizballah has already begun handing out 12 grand to every victim in Lebanon who lost a house and is already rebuilding a country. The Bush administration, with all the resources of the world’s largest economy and with a Republican congress, has not been able to make significant strides to rebuild a city (in almost a year).

  24. keepinon Says:

From some rather blunt talks with relatives that live in Fla., it appears that there are many who feel that the folks in La., Miss., and Ala. that have received Federal assistance after Katrina, already have received more than their fair share. Seems that the native “Canes” I have talked to feel that they have not been “given near as much” from earlier storms, as those folks have. Sigh….

  25. michelle malkin Says:

    boo freakin hoo!!!

i don’t see anything in the constitution about ‘thou shall save new orleans from the rain’!! senator lott is correct. we have a war–hell, three or four of them–to fight and win!

oh, i get it…you people in new orleans want the terrorists to win, don’t you??? sure, you sit there floating on cardboard boats, inhaling the neighbors morning bowel movements from the water below, and you think THAT is more urgent than us killing muslims–i mean terrorists–don’t you.

why, you are not true AMERICANS like me—well, i don’t know what i am—polynesian or cambodian or something–but, anywya, whatever i am i have a white husband and i work for fox so i MUST be white–right?

i digress. new orleans: wait until the end of the war. kthnx…now SILENCE!

  26. Clyde the Ripper Says:

    #24

    Dear Senator Lott,

I am so pleased that you finally saw the light and have repented for your sins.

Did GW come down and help hang dry wall in your place as he promised Ms. Williams in NO?

God works in mysterious ways, Senator. Just don’t miss an insurance payment.

  27. one right nut Says:

katrina? what the hell is that?

  28. Coffins draped with flags Says:

Let’s speculate here… what would Bush do if a catagory 4 hurricane hit NYC just like it did in NO? Would it take 5 days until FEMA shows up? Global warming bring stronger hurricanes and will change the flow of the gulf stream which in turn will cause a DEEP freeze in NYC and all points north. How will Bush handled the next ice age? Will he be able to get our troops back from fighting the war on world terror to America where they can fight the war on terra?

In the Bush world, black folks don’t count. Gotta be a white one to have any real value, especially a RICH WHITE folk.

Cant trust the Bush/Coulter Republicans to do the right thing for Americans… of color that is.

  29. Polimom Says » Spotlight on New Orleans Says:

[…] What’s harder to explain is why, because in spite of how it looks — that we’ve turned our backs, or broken the social contract, or that America’s racist to its core — Polimom doesn’t think this country ever intended, ever imagined, that the city wouldn’t get back on its feet. […]

  30. Bud Light Says:

Liberals have done nothing for the victoms of Hurricane Katrina. They haven’t opened up their own wallets to give to charity. They are cheap, and they only talk about these poor people because they think it may help their party politically. It isn’t, because the Dems only talk of caring for the poor. When it comes to actually doing something, they leave the people holding the bag.

  31. Sam Says:

Check out this commercial for Ahhhnald!

The poor liberal in this race has no chance to win. The liberal is a girly man.

What are the penalties for the Corporations that fail toperform the services that they contracted for? Or is that information ‘classified’? When did failure become success? 2009 cannot come soon enough for me.

  33. Todd Tanner Says:

2009 cannot come soon enough for me.

You are anxious to get defeated again? Hillary is going to go down in flames in her run for president.

  34. GSD Says:

The Republicans do not care about doing what is right for America, just as long as they can stay in power, spend our money and get fat at the lobbyists trough. They gave up on term limits, prudent spending and reducing the size of government. Just as long as THEY win, that is all they care about.

  35. Keith Olberman is a j*ckoff Says:

Can someone explain to me why the government should subsidize one red cent in the rebuilding of New Orleans? I thought that is what insurance is for?

Yeah…..I just wish we would get this global warming situation taken care of. The hurricanes that have hit the US this year have been horrible!!!!

  37. Keith Olberman is a j*ckoff Says:

And what’s with the whole Bush/Coulter theme? Did Ann Coulter become a politician and I missed it? The people who say this are incredibly moronic. George Bush doesn’t have half the conservative blood that Coulter does.

I can’t wait for the Clinton / Sheehan train to be defeated in 2008!

  38. Keith Olberman is a j*ckoff Says:

Actually I take that back….to compare the intelect of Ann Coulter to Cindy Sheehan is like comparing the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees.

  39. theroachman Says:

    Good news Keith

The insurance companies are NOT going to pay a dime for the clean up.

    from the link
GULFPORT, Miss. - A federal judge ruled Tuesday that an insurance company’s policies do not cover damage from floodwaters or storm surge in a decision that could affect hundreds of upcoming cases related to property damage from Hurricane Katrina.
U.S. District Judge L.T. Senter Jr. ruled that a Mississippi Gulf Coast couple cannot collect damages from storm surge caused by Katrina because Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co.’s policies do not cover wind-driven water damage.

    Cindy Sheehan is a dumbshit.

Comment by Keith Olberman is a j*ckoff

No insurance is a way of making money of peoples misery.

AP Investigation Finds More Than 80 Military Recruiters Disciplined for Sexual Misconduct

    By MARTHA MENDOZA
    AP National Writer

“More than 100 young women who expressed interest in joining the military in the past year were preyed upon sexually by their recruiters. Women were raped on recruiting office couches, assaulted in government cars and groped en route to entrance exams.”

  47. Coffins draped with flags Says:

Bud Light (what an appropriate name) - actually, I know several liberals that went to Mississippi to help rebuild houses last year and are planning on going again this year. I’m considering joining them. Now - what have you done to help these victims, besides drinking cheap pee pee.

  48. Coffins draped with flags Says:

Any man that gropes women is the GIRLY MAN.

  49. Coffins draped with flags Says:

Hummm… reading through the comments this morning, I can see that the trolls were out talking to themselves again last night.

Later…. it’s still too early for West Coast bloggers to arrive here.

Lets see the proof! There is lots of proof mAnn Coulter is a dumbshit.

  51. Lady Luck Says:

Remember Katrina and her victims. Vote Democrat.

  52. Sam Says:

Remember Katrina and her victims. Vote Democrat.

Why? The Dems didn’t do anything to help.

  53. Lady Luck Says:

Government lesson 101. The dems are not running the country. The dems are in the minority and have virtually no say so on government policy or any of the appointments made by chimpy to agencys like FEMA. If you remember the man appointed to head FEMA was a friggin horse trainer! Repubs are weak on national security and have proven so. Count 9-11 and Katrina for starters. Americans are less safe due to the actions of this incompetent bunch.

  54. Not surprised Says:

    I repeat:

The so called despotic Hizballah has already begun handing out 12 grand to every victim in Lebanon who lost a house and is already rebuilding a country. The Bush administration, with all the resources of the world’s largest economy and with a Republican congress, has not been able to make significant strides to rebuild a city (in almost a year).

Those are the facts, and facts like these (and there are many more issues than just New Orleans) will cause the Republicans to loose big this November.

  55. Otherworld » Oh shit…it’s Dr. Tran! Says:

[…] Not just those poor though….it gets better worse: The AP has written a detailed analysis of Bush’s failure to follow-up on his promises after Hurricane Katrina. “The job of clearing debris left by the storm remains unfinished, and has been plagued by accusations of fraud and price gouging.
