AEI Fellow After Meeting With Bush: President May Take Military Action Against Iran In 12-18 Months

Reuel Marc Gerecht, a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a member of a small group of analysts who were asked to discuss their views on the Middle East with President Bush at a private lunch this week, said this morning on ABC’s This Week that the mid- to long-term fallout from Israel-Hezbollah conflict could be a good thing because it may prompt Bush to take military action against Iran. Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2006/08/iranattack.320.240.flv]

Whatever the President’s plans are, there are no good military options in Iran.

Digg It!

Transcript:

GERECT: I think more importantly — because of the way the Syrians and Iranians reacted — it is possible that the president has gotten very, very angry over that issue. If, in fact, you see down the road — because the premier issue for the iranians is nuclear weapons program — if you see down the road the president taking a much harder line on that issue

STEPHANOPOULOS: How much harder line could he take? Are you talking about military action?

GERECT: Well yeah it is conceivable you go down the road 12 or 18 months that the president will say nuclear weapons in the hands of the mullahs is simply unacceptable — as he said many times. And if in fact Lebanon contributes to the hardening of the American postion, then I would say that hezbollah actions in Lebanon were a great mistake.

Gerect looks like he's under 42. He should sign up and go himself.

  2. theroachman Says:

nuclear weapons in the hands of the mullahs is simply unacceptable
    Gerect

    But its ok for Pakistan?

  3. bones Says:

OK, now just remember unless we vote in a Democratic Congress in November will we be at war in Iran next year. And most likely that will involve the US nuking Iran because as you see we don't have enough servicemembers to even hold Iraq.

  4. jurassicpork Says:

Frank Rich is back from vacation and with a vengeance in "After 9/11, Fear Finally Strikes Out."

I'm actually liking this guy more than Mo Do.

  5. Coffins draped with flags Says:

Yeah - nukes are okay for Pakistan, India, Isreal, CHINA, North Korea, Russia, France and especially the USA. After all, we are the only that nuked another nation. Trust us, world, we are your friends.

I hope the hell we get our troops out of Iraq before the frat boy fool in the WH starts off on another one of his failed adventures.

All the more reason to vote for a change in direction in November - vote Democrat. Time to stop the Bush nazis in Washington from blowing up the world.

  6. Joseph Says:

12 to 18 months - just in time for 2008 presidential elections. Bush uses war (which he can wage) and terrorism (which he can provoke) as political weapons against his own people.

  7. kasinca Says:

Chimpeachment will solve most of the world's problems...the Chimp created most of the world's problems.

  8. Richard Says:

Things to do: Dem's win back Congress, begin impeachment proceedings, get George out of office, or at least keep him busy, before he gets us all killed.

  9. Jackie Says:

Bush is crazy. Hezbollah won and is getting stonger everyday why because they were attacked and as Israel called to God He answered by supporting Hezbollah. Our troops are in the middle of a civil war in Iraq being killed like ducks notice we have no allies in there to help because Bush lied. Now Iran will have the support of all the Middle East so who will back the United States. Nobody. We will go it alone again and if the idiot Bush uses the atom bomb again well all I can say is Good Night Good Luck.

  10. peter Says:

Jews run our country, folks. Both Dem. and Republican and the media.
    Didn't I just see Hillary at a pro-Israel rally?
Why should Israel have their own country when they already OWN ours?

  11. VJ Says:

    Oh yeah.

The Bushies want to be AT WAR when Americans go to vote in November 2008. Their mantra will be "Don't change parties in the middle of a war".

  12. goose1 Says:

12 to 18months. Declare Marshall Law, won't leave office. Become dictator.

  13. kasinca Says:

I said that the Supreme Court weakened our constitution by appointing the Chimp back in 2001...hell they may have destroyed our constitution and our democracy, in the long run....these bastards care more about being in power than the country they are supposedly serving...this could be the end if we don't rid ourselves of this do nothing majority and their stupid chimpanzee leader.

Vote the bastards out of office in November...save America!

  14. Coffins draped with flags Says:

#12 - not sure there if there is a clause in the Constitution of the US that allows the president to declare marshall law. But then again, since when did frat boy read the Constitution or follow and uphold the Constitution. He did swear to uphold the Constitution when he was inaugerated. Maybe he was thinking holding up the Constitution in his hands was the same as upholding the Constitution. One never knows. He certainly can't complete a sentence in English, not even in "Cowboy English".

  15. Ho Chi Minh Says:

Is Gerect willing to join the army himself to fight? No? Didn't think so.

  16. Jeffrey Stewart Says:

Could someone please explain to me why Iran is an enemy of the US?

  17. GSD Says:

Gerecht is one of a handful of Neo-con media tools that is destroying this nation. The US is seen as a warmonger and the more we wage war the more that belief is solidified.

These people should be driven from the halls of power and punditry and shunned for generations.

    -GSD

  18. Coffins draped with flags Says:

Jeffrey - that's an easy question to answer. Iran has oil and the capability to cut off the oil shipments through the Perian Gulf. Shooter Cheney will not allow anyone to f**k with his oil.

    Did that help?

  19. Coffins draped with flags Says:

Gerecht - just another Yellow Republican. He needs to take a close look at and count of the coffins draped with flags which return from the Middle East on a regular basis. If he volunteers now, he too can have the opportunity to return to Dover DE in a coffin draped with a flag.

These nazis have go to either start putting up or shutting up.

  20. unbelievable Says:

I think the fear of $5 a gallon gas is beginning to outweigh the pretend fear of nuclear attacks from the Middle East, and the Average American is too worried about affording to get to work to worry about more irrational 'what ifs'...

  21. unbelievable Says:

How many times can the boy cry "Wolf!"? I guess we're about to find out...

Because the Decider decided that they are...

  23. Clyde the Ripper Says:

    #16

They have more oil than Daddy and the Ayatollah dised him and Haliburton needs to improve their profit margin for Uncle Dick.

  24. Kay Says:

I don't believe it will be 12-18 months, I believe this administration will cause another 9/11, blame it on the Iranians, and then we will attack Iran. September 11th part II.

  25. Marie Says:

If the Dems are successful in November, this cockamamie plan will not happen.

  26. Zooey Says:

Why should Israel have their own country when they already OWN ours?
    Comment by peter

Jesus Christ, peter, what's your point?

  27. RUCerious Says:

Let's see...Iran supports Hezbollah, Hez fights with Israel, therefore we attack Iran.
What part of this actually makes sense?
Is Israel our defacto 51st State? Do we have a treaty with Israel that calls for agression against not only it's stateless enemies, but also their sponsors?

  28. unbelievable Says:

    From CNN:

    Iran tests short-range missile

Military training plane catches fire, crashes outside Tehran

(oh yeah, they are a real threat...)

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran test-fired a surface-to-surface short-range missile, while a military training plane crashed outside the capital Tehran after catching fire, state-run television reported Sunday.

The missile testing came a day after Iran launched a series of large-scale military maneuvers geared at introducing the country's new defensive doctrine.

  29. unbelievable Says:

"Saegheh, the missile, has a range of between 80 to 250 kilometers," state-run television said. It said the missile was tested in the Kashan desert, about 250 kilometers (155 miles) southeast of the capital of Tehran.

    (so scary... / sarcasm off)

  30. Kay Says:

I really feel that the evil shadow gov't that exists within BushCo. is planning another 9/11 : maybe it will be to bolster the godamn fear they are always spouting off about.
Who knows? To affect the midterm elections? 2008? You can bet the sinister sect within BushCo are planning something. They have to.

  31. RUCerious Says:

Taking the average democratice lead in the polls for the last month - 12.7%
The chickenhawks in the administration are desperate for some way to radically upset the apple cart. No mistake, they'll do anything to keep the reins of power from the dems...

  32. Kay Says:

And when I see this crap about the Ramsey murder, Michael Jackson, the runaway bride, the murder in Aruba,OJ Simpson etc. These are all damn distractions against the things that really matter. I am not saying that the people involved in these cases are important. I just feel the media will take stuff like this and focus on it. It's all BREAD AND CIRCUS for the masses. The public seems to feed off stories like these. Why do you think all the crime shows on TV are so popular. Shame on the media in this country for not taking BushCO to task on the horrible things they have done and continue to do. When the Ramsey murder case gets more attention than the recent decision regarding wire tapping by a federal judge. It's sick. I tell you. The Media in this country is complicate by silence.

  33. Sharon Cox Says:

Great posts all......And what about restoring negotiations and deplomacy with the other countries of the world......Every one here know's how hell bent this bunch of merry waramongers are on total war and take over of the world. Remove this bunch, get all these soft hand, no neck, bloated old white men out along with dead eyed rice and put in some people with diplomacy skills and military capabilities....If the country want's total war's forever keep the crazies in there now, if peace is to work we must have military men with strength and swift action to prevent war's. We need people with good minds in office not failed businessmen with drunk brain cells pretending to be cow boy's.....Screw him and the horse he didn't ride in on........Blessings

  34. Kay Says:

I meant tosay : the media in this country is complicit by silence.

  35. Gerald Gibson Says:

president has gotten very, very angry over that issue

So we want emotional boobs running the policy of the United States of America? I dont think so. This is not a chicken scratch red neck bar fight NeoCons... Cold calculation is what is needed here not people getting "stompin mad".

  36. Marie Says:

    #32 Kay,
I agree entirely with your comments.
The media should be ashamed, but they are not. The corporate bigwigs pander to the least common denominator among us with the least controversial material because it benefits their profit margins to keep the masses ill-informed, entertained, and easily manipulated.
Bad news, controversial news - and the TRUTH about what is happening to America is not conducive to selling more commodities.

  37. K JAMES Says:

I think we should let Isreal move its borders to Texas. I wonder how the residents of Crawford would feel if they were told you must move or face tanks and dozers built right here in the U.S.

  38. jafar Says:

Why don't you Americans try once in your history to vote for a president -for whoever's sake- that does not have roots in either of your adorned parties(Rep. or Democ.). Your history shows that both these parties are led by oil-hugry, arms manufacturing lords and capital gangesters. They are known for their never-filled-up thirst. and have to keep the businuss in whatsoever way they like in order to reach the mirage. Be it Vietnam, creation of Bin Laden, Iraq, and, now, Iran, they have to find something/somewhere to legitimize their thirst. I am sure their games will not end with Iran as long as they have to face with other potential challegers, as China, Euorope.... for world energy resources and markets. Chapters upon chapters of tragedies are closed and new ones open in American history, but you Americans don't dare to
promote a totally different chapter as shown by your ever-electing the same characters to play in your old theater hall with the same story but different version.

  39. Marie Says:

"screw him and the horse he didn't ride in on"
Sharon, you really have a way with words!
    LOL.

  40. theroachman Says:

Could someone please explain to me why Iran is an enemy of the US?

    Comment by Jeffrey Stewart — August 20, 2006 @ 12:25 pm

Their oil is sold in petroEuros rather than dollars and China is Iran's No. 1 Customer.

  41. bones Says:

Jafar, to run for President takes millions of dollars in the US. There are no third parties here with that kind of money. It is something Americans are working on but our first oredr of business here is to enable the opposition party (democrats) to impeach the madman (Bush) and by then maybe we as a people can enact some election reform which will allow a more even playing field so third parties can gain a foothold.

  42. james k. sayre Says:

Dear Kay, I know that your heart is in the right place, but "complicate?" Complicit? I assume that most posters on progessive blogs have graduated from college, and have used college dictionaries and understand the use of spell checkers in word processing. Yet, misspellings abound on this web site and many others. I do not understand what the problem of taking time to check on spelling is these days. I suppose that we are in such as state of outrage about the Bush criminal regime, that we just sputter. The point of proper spelling is to communicate what we are thinking to others. Let's no rite like boosch or speil like busch.
    Cheers.

  43. JPark Says:

#42 Umm, I am pretty darn sure a spell check would not know you meant complicit when saying complicate. How about giving out your email so everybody can send you there posts for editing? Just an idea. Unless, of course, you are simply hijacking the thread. If that is the case...bugger off. By the way, your question mark should have followed the quotation mark, not the word complicate.

  44. The DLC are Frauds Says:

    Can't wait!

  45. Sharon Cox Says:

Thank's Marie for the notice.....Sure good to see you back....

Regarding the poor spelling. it is not the issue here. but I'll take the bait. First off you will have to forgive my mispelled words and poor compisition or pass over my post's.....I am not a college grad, didn't finish high school. I am one of the old timers that went to the school of hard knocks. Next.....My old iMac does not have and can not install spell check......I don't have the funds to buy a new Mac, which I would do if able, this one was a precious gift and will be with me untill it blows up or I win the lottery. (Thank you Michael for your gift's).

Moving right along with the thread.....This crazy bunch of merry waramongers are distroying our country and the world as every one here know's and I for one am going to do all I can to boot them out and then help put their bloated butts in jail......Blessings....I use to be a mouse, now I'm still a mouse but now I roar.....

  46. Jake Says:

    #38, jafar

Why don’t you Americans try once in your history to vote for a president -for whoever’s sake- that does not have roots in either of your adorned parties(Rep. or Democ.).

This is a "dream" of a good third of the population. We are so sick of both of these greedy corrupt parties, but there isn't much we can do about it. Our election system is automatically rigged, legally, to elect one of these two parties. The election system in most states makes it very difficult for a third party to even gain a slight foothold, much less win an election.

For a country that is supposed to be so democratic, it's one of the least democratic democricies that I'm aware of. Maybe Iran is slightly less so, but I'll bet the Iranian Majlis has a higher turnover rate than our Congress. I know the old Soviet politburos used to.

  47. Sam Says:

Dems would let Iran obtain nukes because they are weak in the war on terror.

  48. Sharon Cox Says:

#47 Sam, your post is as valed as mine......You suck buttermilk through a straw.....

I'm glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read that, Sharon, because my sinuses just can't take it these days. :-D

  55. Bob Says:

Isn't the AEI one of the most powerful pro Israel think tanks in America. I always thought that our main think tank was Congress, but I guess times haved changed. Say hello to Wolfowitz, Perle and now this war goon named Gerecht or something.

  56. Michael Says:

    Sharon,

I've given a few Macs to friends and family members, but I don't recognize your name. : (

Don't worry about the misspellings. The point is that you communicate effectively. As a university English professor, I assure you that the spirit of your notes is vivid and quite understandable.

(Of course, spelling is important with regard to formal writing situations.)

The really important issue here is the fact that the Bush baby wants more war the way a human baby wants more milk. The only way we will wean this evil child is to remove him from power.

George Bush is the biggest danger to America!

  57. Phylo Se Fiser Says:

Before anyone calls peter (comment #10) an anti-semite, you should read the Mearsheimer Walt white paper on the Israel Lobby. They are both highly respected academics (Harvard and Univ of Chicago). They explain the depth and breadth of Israel's influence over our foriegn policy. They even suggest that we wouldn't be in Iraq right now if it weren't for the Israel Lobby. Now I'm worried they might be pushing us into war with Iran.

As proof of the influence of the Israel Lobby consider the fact that not one major US publication dares publish the paper. It can be found at the London Review of Books. Please read it. The Lobby depends on the ignorance of the American Public.

    Phylo out.

  58. Ho Chi Minh Says:

#56 Michael; Bush is a danger not only to America, but the entire world. He MUST be STOPPED AT ALL COSTS!!!

  59. Stephen Kriz Says:

For the sake of this nation, the good of the world and a brighter future of this world, we MUST work for the impeachment and imprisonment of Richard Bruce Cheney and George Walker Bush.

What an ugly and disgusting future it will be if these criminals are allowed to serve out their terms...

    Uncle Ho,

Talk about a Zen-buzz kill! Damn!

I'm outta here for now, play as nicely as you can!

  62. Jafar Says:

Bones. I think everybody with a bit of cortex in skull is highly disappointed with the direction the warmonger politicians are leading the world. Stop blaming the ones' belief for the creation of the present quagmire. Being a non-religious myself, I stongly believe the religions- brought by the superhumans of the different eras(prophetes)- have stepped into our civilizations for the very benefit of man. We should not be stupid to condemn these super-huamans or their followers for this quagmire. These are the rulers who have made the religions as very effective tools to reach their their never-satiable desire for power and lust, be it a Christian Bush, A Jewish Sharon or a Muslim Khomeini. When needed, a cretin muslm will created to be called Bin Laden in order to counter the then-Soviets; he will later be given different mission to pave a ground for the new "terrorism and counter-terrorism"game in order to announce the birth of the American's "New World Order" in the vacume left by the Soviets. Are not Sharon and Bush or likewises committing the same crime against humanity in the name of a Christian and a Jew? Do not forget that religions are not the only victims of such rulers but the countries and culturs identified with these religions are the main targets.
To sum up, I think the rational and intellectual people from different communities should lead the way by enlightening their respective communities with the realities of politics, politician and the dirty games involved. Ordinary people, irrespective of their beliefs and nationality should not be deceived for the benefit of warmongers or cretin religious fanatics.

  63. ccoaler Says:

An obvious battleground turned even more obvious. Especially for short minded persons like Bush. I dont see any contradiction Bush is in if he attax. He vowed to (1)fight terrorism, (2)"undisciplined attacks" on other nations (what IRaq did in Kuwait and what Hizbollah just proved to be true) and (3)weapons of mass destruction. the second point was still a bonus for iran and its pretty much gone now. point 3 (wmds) werent in iraq so bushs still pretty lousy when it comes to this. I guess hell try to prove that his not entirely inane concerning this one.

  64. Sharon Cox Says:

Michael, bravo for you're kindness and giving to you're friends.....A good post, I agree.

The Michael I was refering to crossed over June 12th of this year....A dear friend, like a brother, and I miss him terribly......Blessings all

  65. june roldan Says:

The '06 elections will be rigged again. Do you really think the Shrub and his gang will let the Dems take control of the house and senate, when that means almost certain impeachment to them. No way, it ain't gonna happen.

The Shrub and his Twigs really want the sheeple back in the fold again, and for the most part, their scare tatics haven't been as effective as they were in the past. He will keep upping the ante with bigger and bigger scare tacits, anything to get us back in the fold, until him and his thugs realize that the only way they'll get us back is to manufacture a massive attack on the US, that will make 911 look like a walk in the park. They will then call for martial law, the 2008 elections will be called off, Bush and his gang will remain in office, and that my friends will be the end of our country as we know it.

I can not think of anyway we can stop him, within the law that is. Most of the supreme judges are on his side, and he has been lining up his ducks in a row for quite some time now. Look at PNAC.

Unless we actually grow a spine and take to the streets, but somehow or another I can't see that happening. The majority of Americans are too glued to their tvs, malls and whatever else they consider their safety zone.

I am not trying to be glib about this, it broke my heart just to think about it, much less write it down here for all to see. But thinking logically, I just can't see it any other way. Can you?

  66. Sharon Cox Says:

Bob and Philo, good point's, I knew that but perhap's others didn't so it was good to post here.....May I add.....Chertoff and Lieberman........Both have strong ties with the others and have been inefective in their job's but big supporters and citizens of Israel by their dual citizenship...Hard to keep up with all the little twists and turns of this miserable bunch but it's a taske we must accomplish. All a person has to do is follow the money and listen to the speeches ........Blessings

Send that word to Colbert. Very funny.

Yes, Sharon is on fire today... watch out.

  69. bones Says:

#65, the republofascists can cheat if the elction is close. the diebold machines can be magically hacked, like any computer to say what you want it to say. It's much harder to cheat if the result isn't close. that's why we have to turn out in force. Polls put a lot of republican voters staying home this November, not wanting to vote for democrats but not actively supporting the republicans either. If that doesn't work then we really have lost democracy and a new official fascist chapter starts.

  70. Coffins draped with flags Says:

Jafar - are your posts the talking points that traitor Rove sent out today? I don't understand where you are going with all this. We, Americans, are well aware of the CRAP in Washington and we don't need you to lecture us.

Immigrate, become a citizen and VOTE and then you will have the right to complain about our system of government. Otherwise, butt out.

  71. Coffins draped with flags Says:

#65 - if marshall law prevails and elections are cancelled, then we become insurgents. Guerilla warfare worked once in this nation (American Revolutionary War) and it can work again. Thank the NRA for pushing to make automatic weapons legal again (I despise the NRA). It may sound strange coming from mrs peacenik, but the NRA is about guaranteeing our right to bear arms to to form a militia. The CRAP in Washington is exactly why our founding fathers created the second amendment to the Constitution of the US.

  72. Kay Says:

#42 : Thank you so much for pointing out my terrible flaws. I bow my head my head in shame all in the name of proper grammar.

By the way, the fact that you would come on here to do this shows how pathetic you really are.

  73. Coffins draped with flags Says:

bones - good point. Here in Pike Township PA, we call ALL the double D households and encourage them to come out and vote. We also call the I households which are generally the swing voters. Even though there will be Senate seats (Ricky Rooster Sanitorium) and House seats on the ballot in November, voter turnout is normally low for what is considered "off" years. The Dems need to get out their voters in November if they want to take this country in a new direction.

  74. tom baker Says:

    it's "martial" law.

  75. bones Says:

As an interesting note on Lebanon, Anthony Bourdan, the chef that does the show "No Reservations" was in Beruit doing a Travel channel show about the food in Lebanon when the "war" broke out. It's going to be shown tomorrow at 10PM on the Travel Channel (I think). Would be nice to see some real footage not filtered by Faux and BushCo.

  76. Barring unforeseen logic, we invade Iran in 12-18 months Says:

[...] Well, it looks like the fix is in. Yet another doomsday scenario from us “tinfoil hatters” that, after years of naysaying, will likely come to fruition. According to Think Progress, the right-wing think tank American Enterprise Institute hopes that repurcussions from the Israel/Lebanon conflict might drive Bush to acting against Iran in the next 12 to 18 months. According to AEI fellow Reuel Marc Gerecht on ABC’s This Week: GERECT: I think more importantly — because of the way the Syrians and Iranians reacted — it is possible that the president has gotten very, very angry over that issue. If, in fact, you see down the road — because the premier issue for the iranians is nuclear weapons program — if you see down the road the president taking a much harder line on that issue [...]

The United States begins the massive outsourcing of its industrial base to cheap labor markets. Global demand for petroleum skyrockets. Oil men take over U.S. government. Saudi Arabian oil terrorists attack New York. U.S. retaliates against Afghanistan, taking control of pipeline routes. Caspian Sea oil reserve projections reduced. Global petroleum prices increase. U.S. attacks Iraq and gains control of the world’s second largest known petroleum reserve. Oil production declines and global petroleum prices increase. 80. Trinary Suka Says:

Marc Garecht here wrote a book under the name of Shirley about how bad the intelligence was in the CIA, this guy Gerecht was wrong before and you can bet the guy is wrong again. AEI has been so discredited why would anyone listen to these folks on any issue.

    http://rightweb.irc-online.org/ind/gerecht/gerecht_body.html

Regarding the then-impending war in Iraq, Gerecht said: "If President Bush follows his own logic and compels his administration to follow him against Iraq and Iran, then he will sow the seeds for a new, safer, more liberal order in the Middle East.” (5)

Gerecht, writing under the pseudonym of Edward Shirley, wrote the 1997 book Know Thine Enemy: A Spy’s Journey into Revolutionary Iran. In an essay about the book published in the The New York Review of Books, Lars-Erik Nelson writes:"After chafing at his embassy-based job in Istanbul, Shirley, who had an extensive academic knowledge of Iran, quit the CIA and made a clandestine trip across the border. He wanted, at last, to see the country for himself and to write about it. He took no passport and was smuggled in from Turkey by an unflappable truck driver and guide, whom he calls Hosein. The trip lasted only five days, and Shirley seems to have spent much of it in a state of near panic, hiding in a box inside the truck and spending much of his short time in Tabriz in bed rather than risking possible exposure on the street.

The Guy is a chickenhawk mouthpiece..who was WRONG about Iraq and he spent time in IRAN hiding in a box, shaking like a leaf on a tree. WHY WOULD ANYONE LISTEN TO THESE AEI CREEPS???

[...] And it’s really important that we sweep them from power: Reuel Marc Gerecht, a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a member of a small group of analysts who were asked to discuss their views on the Middle East with President Bush at a private lunch this week, said this morning on ABC’s This Week that the mid- to long-term fallout from Israel-Hezbollah conflict could be a good thing because it may prompt Bush to take military action against Iran. Watch it: [...]

  82. Marie Says:

London papers are reporting that Blair feel betrayed by Bush - what the hell took him so long?
Does that mean he will admit that the Downing Street memo is correct and reason to evict Bush from the White House?
As for initiating a war in Iran, this AEI person has made the rounds on TV before; he is w hawk, an apologist for Bush&Co (the neocons). Comments like his are little stepping stones being laid down on the path toward the next war.
IMHO, the only way we can prevent the inevitable is if the Dems take over Congress and stymie Bush's plans.
Bush has succeeded in dividing our allies and uniting our enemies - what a guy!

  85. Horrified Heartlander Says:

Gerecht is wrong! The Bushevicks, Cheney especially want to attack Iran on some flimsy pretext before the Npvember elections. The assaults on Lebanon were planned ahead (see Robert Parry, Sidney Blumenthal, Seymour Hersh, et al.) It was hoped that if Middle East populations would turn against Hezbollah, the Omert/Bush necon cabal could order incursions into Syria and Iran for their support for the former. The U.S. public would be appreciative of the successful Bushevick attack against Middle East based terrorism.

Of course, the whole mess backfired terribly. But no doubt they are scheming a whole new contingency for pretext as we type.

  86. Marie Says:

I don't think Bush can pull it off before November - Congress would have to go along and I don't think they will at this time.
It will be AFTER November when we will have to be watchful.
If Dems gain some control, it will be harder for Bush&Co, but they will surely try - it will just take more lies and duplicity on their part.
If the Dems don't get any more control in November, it's a done deal. IMHO.

Of course the Republican timetable is to wait until after the election and the holidays to rev up the anti-Iranian hate machine and build momentup to extend the Unocal pipeline through Tehran, but they might have a problem with the Democratic timeline, which is to wait until after gaining a majority in the fall elections to rev up the Bush impeachment machine and build momentup to restore Democrats to the White House in 2008.

  94. hass Says:

If you read the book on Iran that this Marc Reul Gerecht wrote under the psuedonym of "Shirley" called "Know Thine Enemy" you'd see that the man was a minor CIA guy at the US embassy in TUrkey who reviewed visa applications. Frustrated by the lack of career progress, he decided to play "secret agent man" by smuggling himself into Iran inside a box in a truck. Once in Iran, he disvered that everyone knows about him since the truck driver had told everyone that he's coming and expect company --- and no one cared. No one bothered with him and the police ignored him. Frustrated at playing "secret agent man" he makes up a fantasy about being secretly followed by Iranian intelligence operatives -- after all, that's the only explanation for why no one cared about his presence in Iran -- and he rushes back to Turkey in the same box 3 days later. That's it. That's the sum total exposure that this guy actually has on Iran. Oh, and he dated an Iranian woman in the US once. He doesn't let you forget that because he keeps writing about how Iranian women are secretly attracted to him.

Now, how someone like this gets to meet the President of the United States is beyond me.

  95. Francis Copack Says:

"(...) The has gotten very, very angry..."

A president whose anger is a factor in setting the foreign policy of a state should not be in office. The most shocking facet of this comment by Marc Gerecht is the ease with which he and others accept as "normal" that the anger of an intellectually handicapped religious fundamentalist should be considered as an instrument of political deliberation.

"The King got angry and nuked the persians."

  96. W.D.Russell Says:

It may depend on the next election, 06.

I really feel that the evil shadow gov’t that exists within BushCo. is planning another 9/11 : maybe it will be to bolster the godamn fear they are always spouting off about.

You are right on the subject, Kay. Alex Jones recently predicted another 9/11 style attack within next two months. He did predicted 9/11 in July of 2001. He's been researching global elite for 12 years now. Check out his websites and his live show. I just watched his new movie "Terrorstorm" a must see one, it's free on google. Guy knows what he's talking about!

  98. verifi Says:

re "Complicate" and "spellcheck" - comments by Kay and Sharon Cox (#32, 33, 34 and #45).

In #45 Sharon Cox says her old iMac "does not have and can not install spell-check."

Well, Sharon, I'm happy to report to you that there finally IS some good use for all those FREE AOL CD's that used to clutter up our mailboxes, and are still given away free at Circuit City and dozens of other stores. I use the AOL "write mail" and "New Text document" as my main word processors. I am writing this, as I type, on an AOL e-mail, and after I'm finished, I will use the SPELL CHECK button ("ABC") to proof for errors. Of course Spell-check won't catch the use of "complicate" when you intend "complicit," but I find it is a very handy little word-processor. Indeed, I have neither Word nor Apple's version (Appleworks?) installed on this computer, which means I haven't used either in months.
AOL's processor is "clean" (not loaded down with paragraph, indentation, and other complex word-processor commands), the spell-check works very quickly and easily, and it has suficient font, bold, italic, and color choices to make it useful in most circumstances that don't demand a more powerful processor.
Hope this tip helps! Even if I had Word installed on my computer, I would still use AOL's free processor for most composition. (And, isn't it great to know that there really is a use for all those CD's that used to junk up our mail?)

******You need to get back to class - Jews have been told by our mothers and bubbys' "don't hit back - take a slap, at least you're alive". So, dear LIAR, in 1945, if the US threatened to drop a bomb on a center of a imperial, militaristic Jewry, I believe the Jews would have acquiesed. (How else do you explain the Jewish 'relocation to the ghetto' mentality? It was thought to be the avenue of LIFE. Tragically, it facilitated mass murder on a "more efficient scale".)

The nukes dropped on Japan had NOTHING to do with winning WW II. The Japanese were already trying to negotiate a surrender.

The nukes were really aimed at Moscow! They were the first shots of the cold war or WW III?

In the same way, when the neoCONs drop nukes on Iran they will be aimed at every other non-nuclear counrty to show them what will happen to them if they don't cave in to every demand of the multinational corporations. i.e. Venezuela, Brazil, Saudi Arabi etc.

  101. muddmike Says:

Bush won't need the Congress to debate. Hitler attacked Poland "after" Poland "first" attacked Germany. If an Israeli sub sinks a tanker and they blame it on Iran, then they can respond "defensively" and bomb Iran.

Also, if Israel first attacks Iran or Syria with cruise missles, Syria and Iran will respond and we once again can "defend" ourselves, just like Israel "defended" itself by bombing Labanon into the stone age.

They will have to wait until a day or two before the election, or it will backfire, when Gas goes up to $9.999 per gal, and tens of thousands of our troops are killed.

Within a week, even the most rabid Bush supporters will see what a bad idea bombing Iran was.

  102. mighty aphrodite Says:

Dear MUDDY - I suppose the "unconditional surrender by Japan" on the USS Missouri RIGHT after the second nuclear bombing HAD NOTHING to do with ending the war?? Is bLIAR in your class??

Response to several comments about Gerecht joning the military to fight. Unfortunately, he is now probably at least 42. He first worked as both an analyst for the CIA and in the State Department in 1985, when he had to have been at least 21. See http://www.aei.org/scholars/scholarID.19/scholar.asp

However, there is no age limit to sign up for Blackwater.

Also, in his resume he NEVER did any military service, so he is a true chickenhawk.

They were trying to surrender BEFORE the bombs were dropped! The country was blockaded and bombed out. There would have been no need to invade Japan.

Yes, all of the "official" history books state that it was necessary to save American lives. Since the US won, we got to write the history.

I assume that you are a reasonably intelligent person, and can search the internet. On it you will find that there is much out there that rationally disputes the need to use the atom bombs on Japan. It may have sped the surrender by a week or so, but not much more.

If you're looking for the tie in that connects religion to politics, look into Freemasonry. Freemasonry is actually refered to by many different terms and presents itself through many different sects, but, if you search the web for Freemasonry, you will be directed to all of the information on these occultic groups that your poor enslaved soul can handle. I'm not just speaking to Americans. This pertains to Hitler, and all the way back to Rome and Egypt. The occult has been with us since the beginning, and like most religions, has had to make cosmetic changes to retain viability. However the core principles of all religions and Freemasonry have NOT changed. Therin lies the secret to be uncovered. If we all knew this as fact, as opposed to rumor, the world would be safe, because we, the wise, would not tolerate ANY OF THEM to have power over us. Check out my website webpages.charter.net/albanez77 for some good links to get you started on your journey of transormation. I hope to see you all on the other side. Peace to all of mankind. I know that we can all live together without war. And once we throw those who PROFIT from war to the hungry lions of their own deception, we will have that peace that I so desparately hope for. 109. Tonbridge Says:

They are fools to think that they have 12-18 months. Italy has already said that it willnot send troops to Lebanon if Israel keeps shooting and they don't have equipment to fight the Israeli army on site. Nobody is going to Lebanon the situation is going to spiral out of control and Syria will give them the SAM's to shoot down the the Israeli aircraft and if you think they can't I suggest you clock this video.
    h ttp://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8032325312531786726&q=tunguska

At the moment the US is totally reliant on Iranian and Syrian fuel for it's troops. Let me say that again the supply corridor from Kuwait 1,600 miles away was closed a year ago and the US forces have to buy fuel from the insurgents who truck it in from Syria and Iran. Recently completely missed by the mainstream media the US had to move it's logistics from the road to air transport because of the danger on the ground. Air transport is five times as expensive as road transport so that any budget agreed with the Congress has just been blown.

By increasing the small air to ground missiles they can take down the slow moving C130's at will. Without fuel the US army tanks and planes are just static gun emplacements.

There are four times as many US dollars in issue as the GDP of the US if the currecny loses it's reserve status the US will go through a 400% inflation this is simple maths. This level of inflation has never been experienced by a society that has remained stable politically look at Brazil or the Weimar Republic in Germany.

Knowing the US is going to attack in 12-18 months who do you think is going to make the running the US or Syria and Iran? Who do you think is likely to suceed?

  113. Angela Says:

So, if Bush somehow declares marshall law, starts a couple more oil wars, and does not leave office (essentially creating a facsist state and becoming a dictator) I think there is another issue e should all consider. Who has been the scapegoat this time around? Moslems. I don't know how many times I have seen online postings (especially around the 911 anniversary) where people wrote hateful, cruel, totally un-Christian (and this country is supposed to be uber Christian just like their pro-life bellicose president) words directed at the Moslem community. Many brainwashed Americans hate Moslems. They take comfort in placing all the blame for our present condition on a diverse religious community.

If the fascist state does come to pass (really folks think 1930s Germany, think Adolf) why on Earth would we not end up with another genocide on our hands and blood on our hands. Sure they might disguise it as vaccines (which new acts demand Americans to accept or face jail time), but think about it. Hey, maybe they really even aim to wipe out those with diseases and disabilities--since the administration is so anti-national health care program. I read on a website endoresed by many doctors that 18000 people die on average each year just because they don't have insurance and can't afford treatment.

Bush has made this a holy war. Killing is killing; what's more, death is death. A Moslem's life isn't worth as much as a Christians to many Americans. That's why even soccer moms don't get upset when they hear about pregnant women and nerveous fathers being gunned down in their vans on the way to Iraqi hospitals.

Folks please don't just be online champions for true freedoom and peace. Our war with ourselves can only be won by changing people's minds. Every change of heart makes a difference. We once stood "united" but in ignorance. Let us stand united in out knowledge.
