McCain Calls For Escalation In Iraq, Suggests Putting More Troops On The Ground

On NBC’s Meet the Press this morning, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) called for immediately adding more U.S. soldiers on the ground in Iraq. Echoing the failed strategy behind the escalation during the Vietnam War, McCain suggested that putting more troops in the middle of Iraq’s civil war would help the U.S. to ultimately prevail. Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2006/08/mccaintroops.320.240.flv]

As former administration officials and military generals have noted, a larger initial force was necessary to provide security on the ground and prevent the growth of the insurgency. But at this point in the conflict, a larger force is operationally impracticable. Slate’s Fred Kaplan wrote last year that the Army could maintain its current troop levels in Iraq, but it doesn’t have the capacity to “allow George W. Bush to send more troops to Iraq and Afghanistan” unless we institute a draft.

Beyond the practical unfeasibility of sending in more troops, McCain misdiagnoses what adding more troops at this point would do to the situation on the ground. As the Center for American Progress’s Iraq redeployment strategy argues:

A more visible presence of U.S. troops risks further stoking the flames of the insurgency by feeding perceptions of long-term U.S. occupation among many Iraqis.
Full transcript below:

MCCAIN: The question is, are we going to be able to bring the situation under control now? I still believe we can. I think part of it has to do with the Madhi army and Sadr. Sadr has got to be taken out of this equation and his militia has got to be addressed forcefully.

GREGORY: But to do that, do you need more U.S. soldiers on the ground now?

MCCAIN: I think so. I think so. We took troops from places like Ramadi, which are still not under control and put them into Baghdad. We’ve had to send in additional troops as they are. All along, we have not had enough troops on the ground to control the situation. Many, many people knew that, and it’s — we’re paying a very heavy price for it.

Evidently McCain is having a BIG VIETNAM flashback. You would think a guy who “lived” thru the Vietnam Conflict would understand pouring thousands of US boys and girls into a war zone DOESN’T WORK in a CIVIL WAR.

Wave goodbye to your presidential hopes Mr. McCain. The American people are not stupid. We are tired of pouring our tax dollars down a festering rat hole with no hope of a return on the investment, not even a thank you. If we are going to drive the country into bankruptcy I’d rather do it invesing in alternative fuels, schools, healthcare or ant of a thousand other causes.John McCain obviously doesn’t have what this country wants or needs. We certainly don’t want another Bush.

  8. Jake says:

I saw that. I was thinking, “Isn’t that what Kerry suggested during the campaign, like 2 years ago?”

Uh, it’s WAY too late for that. Pull most of them back to Kuwait. Send some to Qatar and send the rest home.

Jim Webb SLAMS Bush-Cheney Middle East Policy

“The invasion of Iraq was a double strategic blunder” – a “diversion from…the war against international terrorism” and a quagmire that “has tied down our military in a costly occupation.”

“Al Qaeda is stronger today than 5 years ago,” in large part “as a result of our occupation of Iraq.”

“We should say clearly to the people of Iraq…that we have no plans for a long-term presence in that country.”

“Congress should make sure” that we don’t build permanent bases in Iraq “by banning any expenditure” for that purpose.

The Administration “planned from the very beginning to make war in Iraq.” They cynically used “fear and anger after 9/11″ in order to achieve that objective.

    Good riddins McCain !

  20. Pampero Firpo says:

“Conservatives” really do miss Clinton don’t they? What, with all his balanced budgets, peace and prosperity you might think they would forgive him one blow job–after all, disgraced Congressman Newt Gingrich had the US Treasury spend $75 million to “investigate” it. Never mind that Clinton could speak with knowledge about subjects important to our nation without using note cards made for him by Karl Rove. Clinton lies about blow jobs; Bush lies about war.

  21. The DLC are Frauds says:

  22. CalGal says:

I can’t believe it! When we were slipping down the slope in Vietnam the common method used was put more soldiers in country. All that did was add to the troops killed in action. John McCain should know better than that. Evidently the Vietnam war taught him nothing.

He called his fellow servicemen rapists, killers, Gangis Khan. He slandered good men.

  39. RealScientist says:

I think we should offer Sam our thanks. He has kindly distilled all the long-winded, often incoherent, blather coming from Rove’s troll-bots into the canonical set of talking points. In effect what we are seeing is the pure distillation of all that emanates from Rove’s vast noise machine.

  40. Marie says:

Yes, the conservatives do miss Clinton – -
This was just on Fox TV – one of their analysts said Lynn Cheney is a woman “of integrity” as opposed to Hillary Clinton. She also said Clinton was an “enabler” for her husband, and she even “took him back.” (Apparently there is no way for Hillary to have earned approval.)
Also, she said were Clinton to become president, her husband would be a “security risk.”
Fox employees are just sick and twisted partisan blabbers with nothing intelligent to say.
No wonder their fans are incredibly uninformed.

  41. Sam says:

    Thank goodness for Clinton’s BJ

Clinton is a sexual predator. He made many unwelcome advances on women.

  42. Sam says:

Wonder if he has heard about Bush’s background? They don’t talk about it on Fox.

  46. Sam says:

Sam is one of those fans.

I am a fan of this country. Most Dems, who are unpatriotic, are not.

  47. Pampero Firpo says:

Sam wants to talk about Clinton because his man, Bush is an abject failure and a dullard. It must make you feel pretty stupid to have cast your vote for “GOP” and instead get the neocon lies, debt. and unending war. Sucker!

  48. Zooey says:

Clinton is a sexual predator. He made many unwelcome advances on women.
    Comment by Sam

There’s a difference between sexual predators and jerks, Sam. Jerks are cured by swift kicks to the nuts. Meet me on the corner, and we’ll if it works for you.

  49. Pampero Firpo says:

Everyone here is “a fan of this country” we just aren’t big fans of Bush’s failed Iraq policy and puppets like McCain and Lieberman who want a continuation of the same failure. Clinton lies about a cum stain on a dress–Bush lies about reasons for a war that kills thousands. In the end, both are liars, but Clinton’s lies didn’t end with flag-draped coffins.

  50. Marie says:

Sam just continues to prove my point that Fox fans don’t think- they merely repeat what their lame brains ingest.
To state that Dems are unpatriotic is so yesterday! The repugs wore that one out long ago. Now it is just a joke – but one that the likes of Sam would never understand. It’s sad to see someone with the mentality of Sam post his ignorance for all to see.
I think Pampero has it pegged when he says that seeing that Bush, the dullard and failure is causing Sam to feel stupid, so he is lashing out at Democrats.

  51. Zooey says:

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m done with Sam.

He’s only here because he’s paid to draw us off topic on some important news today. I’m going to look for dixie’s troll list…

They can’t come up with any new talking points, so Sam can only reprise their greatest hits. It’s a sure sign of desperation.

  55. Pampero Firpo says:

Maire: “Conservatives” and trolls like Sam have been duped by the neocons. What “conservative” victories has Bush delivered in 5 years? Bush’s stem cell research veto? Social Security “reform?” Harriet Myers? Sam voted “GOP” but he got “neocon-ed” OUCH!

    TROLL ALERT (UPDATE)

Maybe we should just periodically post a list of known trolls/pest so that new readers can avoid wasting time with them. And we can keep each other up to date. I would love to someday debate a real conservative, but, trolls just waste our time.

Here’s an updated list to pass on:

    I Hate Liberals
    Seixon
    Red Wolf
    Chase
    Giacomo
    ren
    Exley
    Gary Ruppert
    Jason M. Hendler

    Mighty Aphrodite
    Randy
    Retired Republican Soldier
    Antagonist
    Tracy
    COMMENT by Jim
    theleftisnuts
    big mike from ct
    exley
    Mr. Big
    Esteban Calderone
    Alexander Alt
    Deacon Blackfire
    Jerry
    Sam

Here’s how to get on the troll list:

    1) Provide no links. Just slurs and crap.

    2) Put words in your opponents mouth by twisting the reply.

    3) Twisting “cause and effect” using tortured logic.

    4) Bottom line goal: Wasting our time and energy and making us angry.

    5) Claiming your smarter or went to a great school to prove your better or know more or are worth more.

    6) Using weasel words and weasel points from which you back down at the first sniff of an informed link.

    7) Provide links to discredited or biased sources.

    8) Pasting irrelevant telephone book size posts from conservative think tanks.

I welcome others to add to this list and post this list often!!

    – dixie blood

  58. RealScientist says:

Keep up the good work with the troll list. It is a useful reference.

  59. Zooey says:

    RealScientist,

None of us can be here all the time. I think it is dixie’s intent that we add to the list from time to time, and post it. We should always make sure to give her/him credit.

  60. bones says:

Actually what McCain said was put every American except Texans and Arizonans in Iraq.

  61. RealScientist says:

    Thanks, Dixie, and thanks Zooey.

And Jerry (uh, I mean Sam), thanks for the laughs!

  62. Marie says:

This is the first day I have seen posts by Sam and I am stunned by his stupidity.
Yes, he belongs on the toll hall of (in)fame, Zooey. He’s a real time waster. He seems young, impressionable, poorly informed, easly propagandized, and he thinks he’s cool.

  63. Ho Chi Minh says:

We’re waist deep in the big muddy and the big fool says to push on.

Yikes!!! McCain wants to take neck deep in the big muddy. His 2008 presidential hopes are now toast!!!!

Sam, I hate to break the news to you, but US troops DID commit atrocities in Vietnam. Ever hear of My Lai? Read about it.

  64. Outernet says:

Thanks Zooey. Most of the names on that list would be multiple posters, I’d say we have 4 or 5 of the jerks on our hands here, tops. Still, gotta weed them repugs out!

  65. JPark says:

Dixie, I think you can consolidate Sam and Jerry. They are clearly the same idiot.

  66. RealScientist says:

Yeah, maybe we can eventually identify the relationships, and have a troll list with things like “Sam = Jerry”

  67. Hamilton Lovecraft says:

Best news I’ve heard in a while. The further to hawkside McCain goes, the less likely we are to have a Republican president in 2009.

  68. RealScientist says:

I did not write comment #73. If there is one thing that is inappropriate here it is to post falsely under someone else’s screen identity.

    Baltar: proceed to nfl.com

  72. JPark says:

Zooey, eww, what kind of people would spawn such progeny??

  73. Pampero Firpo says:

What exactly is the “Islamic cause?” Hate America for it’s freedom? I don’t think a left-leaning blog is the proper place for “conservative” trolls to come to spread their hate and intolerance. There are right-wing blogs where like-minded people can share all the GOP “victories” like Harriet Myers, the spiralling out of control debt, and Bush’s failure in Iraq.

  74. The DLC are Frauds says:

Every county surrounding Washington DC voted for Kerry.

  75. bones says:

#69 was not me, evidently the trolls have figured out how to write other people’s names.

  80. The DLC are Frauds says:

There’s only one thing I dislike more than Neocons who support democratizing muslims. And it’s muslims, jafar.

Mel Gibson was right. And I bet he’s got a pretty good assessment of islam arabs, too.

  81. Marie says:

Between Sam and Baltar this thread has been highjacked.

  82. bones says:

McCain can’t seriously look at the polls and expect this message to resonate with Americans. Bush and Cheney have tape of him with little boys and they are making him the sacrificial lamb. McCain is an experienced politician, he wouldn’t be delivering this message unless he’s being put up to it. I’m sure in the end, Bush will insist it was all McCain’s idea.

  83. JPark says:

I don’t take kindly to anybody that tries to convert me, whether they be Muslims, Jews, Christian or Zoroastrians. I think Muslims and Christians are equally misguided with extremists in equal proportions. Don’t take my wish for peace and my hope that our foreign policy changes toward the middle east as anything other than my sympathy for the innocents that are dying because of BushCo. It is not because I believe that Islam is the right path, nor am I condoning what extremists in this world are doing; It is simply wanting to see social justice and peace.

  84. RealScientist says:

If TP is on the job, we should soon see these posts falsely attributed to us removed, along with Jafar’s posts.

  85. The DLC are Frauds says:

    Bush supports Bin Laden family
    Bush supports muslim dictators
Bush supports giving cash and democracy and ports to islam.

NOT THE DEMOCRATS. Atleast not this one.

  86. JPark says:

Ok, jafar, my thought out post was obviously wasted on you, you right wing troll.

  87. The DLC are Frauds says:

“McCain supported increasing troop levels in the inevitable Iraq disaster” will be a very nice Democratic campaign ad.

  88. OxyCon says:

The Madhi militia is the government of Iraq’s problem, not ours.
What Iraq needs today is a heavy handed thug like Saddam Hussein to squash it’s own internal rebellions. If we were to take on the religious fanatic militias, that will create more anti American hatred and more terrorists.
It’s time for us to leave. The Mission was accomplished. Bush avenged his “he tried to kill my daddy”.

  89. JPark says:

Knock off using RealScientist’s handle. It is childish (but I guess you can’t really help yourself, can you?).

  90. Marie says:

Where will McCain get his additional troops? Even if that crazy idea were acted upon.
We already have reduced standards (got to be a real comfort to guys in Iraq) raised the age elegibility, over-extended the terms of those already serving with stop-loss.
The man is just not making sense.

  91. bones says:

Obviously #108 isn’t me. But then many things are not what they appear here, the only thing that is as it appears is Jafar is an idiot.

  92. Pampero Firpo says:

Why are we in Iraq again?

  93. bones says:

They are back door drafting the inactive ready reserve, they raised enlistment to age 42 and they still can’t make the numbers. The only options are (a) draft – which ain’t happening, or (b) start a war that directly imperils the US, ala Iran.

  94. RealScientist says:

Where will McCain get his additional troops?

Bill Kristol has explained, in his typically snotty way, that we have plenty of troops elsewhere that could be shifted to Iraq. And we all know that Bill is an expert. The Neocon fantasists would throw every American soldier in the world into Iraq, Iran, and Syria if allowed to, just to make sure they get their third world war and all the glory that will accompany it.

  95. Pampero Firpo says:

Why are we in Iraq again? AND what would having more troops there accomplish?

  96. bones says:

Kristol is wrong. you can’t just pull troops from Germany, South Korea, Okinawa, Diego Garcia, Italy, England, Greenland, etc because you have to replace those troops with someone. A lot of these troops and places support the troops on the front. If you hang a closed sign on any of the above bases, you don’t get bullets, toilet paper, food, etc. And there isn’t anyone to backfill, unless Bush gives his cronies civilian contracts to do the support work and send the support troops to the front. Nothing like being a clerk typist today and an infantryman tomorrow.

  97. Phylo Se Fiser says:

Hey, some of you folks should join me over at townhall.com. Giving hell to the righties is good fun.

  99. The DLC are Frauds says:

McCain can say one of three things.

    -Stay the course

This is a dangerous thing that this Jafar is doing. It is being done to discredit TP.

  102. RealScientist says:

The first step to understanding the Neocons is to realize that they are megalomaniacs. These fools believe that some grand destiny waits in store for them. It is their destiny to remake the world in their fantasy image, and they cannot allow anything to get in their way. In their minds, all failures are merely tactical. The grand strategy remains intact, and nothing can shake their faith in it. So despite the spectacular failure of Iraq, they urge our country forward with the mission, pushing for the U.S. to attack Iran, and then Syria, and then who knows who. It really is WW III in their deluded minds, and they are trying with all their might to make this prophecy come true for the rest of us. So they will urge the attack on Iran, whether we have the troops or not. Once we are in Iran, we will become so enmeshed that “cut and run” will become impossible. Ultimately the American people will acquiesce to reinstating the draft, because it really will be WW III. And then they will “get the job done.” Or so these freaks imagine.

These guys truly remind me of Adolf Hitler.

  103. RealScientist says:

    #126

GSD, this is why I sent email to TP asking that they put a stop to whoever has been using other people’s nickname in this thread and ban them. I suspect that Jafar is this same person.

By the way, you can add “mendacious” to your list of adjectives describing the Bush administration.

  104. The DLC are Frauds says:

Comparing and associating Democrats with islamists is backfiring on Republicans. It’s funny.

    How’s this for a campaign/general purpose ad:

Hi. My name is John Doe. I think Bush should stop the Total Information Awareness program because both parties outlawed it in 2004. To replace it we should implement and fund real security measures here at home, not in Iraq.

It should run during American Idol.

Gunmen attacked pilgrims at a Shiite religious gathering in Baghdad today, killing 20 and wounding more than 300 others, police and Iraqi health ministry officials said. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims had crowded into six city neighborhoods when gunmen at street level and snipers in surrounding buildings opened fire, witnesses said.

Nope, no civil war in Iraq. It’s just sectarian violence.

  107. Marie says:

Spudge – their game is semantics – just words. It sort of fits with their overly simplistic slogans and the like — they just re-phrase, use new jargon, and with a snap of their fingers! it’s not civil war, it’s sectarian violence. I think there is a military rule about participation in civil wars and that may be their reluctance to be honest about what is going on in Iraq.

I wouldnt worry about it too much… there have been plenty of people on here calling for the punishment of Saudi Arabia for 911 and the taking away of Pakistans Muslim nuclear bomb.

The Rush Limbaugh types get themselves to believe its opposite day all the time and just because someone is against christofacism they pretend like that equals being pro-al qeada… its not hard to show the incompetence of someone that has only two possible answers to any one question. You are with us or against us!

Oooooorr we are against all dumb shits whether they be American or Saudi or whatever.

    Hello j,

(I wanted to get that in before you disappear again.)

    Passionately stated, as usual.

  111. The DLC are Frauds says:

Not even the meatiest of Neocon meatheads can accuse liberals of hating their own country. The left know how valuable their freedoms are and they know they’re rooted in democratic freedom.

When the Republicans accuse others of “hating America” it’s a pretty good sign their days of leadership are coming to an end.

  112. The DLC are Frauds says:

Answer me this. If Bush had ultimate power to transform the middle east what would he do? What would be the desired results? When would it be finished? What would it look like?
For example, if he had unlimited troops what would he do first?

Hi, James. John negroponte was the proconsul in Guatemala. He did a hell of job sending a lot of people to torture camps. Say Zoo, hi for me.

  116. The DLC are Frauds says:

No one in BushCo could give you that answer.

  140. bones says:

The solution to terrorism is negotiation. Terrorists want something, sometimes that thing is unreasonable and sometimes it’s not. We don’t know because BushCo won’t talk to anyone. We have a whole State dept sitting around doing nothing except making dinner reservations for privilaged frat boys like Bush, Cheney, Rummy. Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, etc have stopped attacking Israel because we made it economically advantageous for them to stop. That doesn’t mean they love Israel but they aren’t participating in militarily killing Israelis anymore. It works, but you have to “diplomatically talk to BOTH sides” to work out a solution.

And how many times do you guys need to receive a request for a stinking open thread before you do it? (I guess when you start paying attention to the Lieberman debacle! )
    Other than that,…

  278. WORFEUS says:

Not to get off topic, but this just came in from AP, from a press reporter on the Airplane with the so called Ramsey killer.

JonBenet suspect heads to U.S. in style

    By JOCELYN GECKER,
    Associated Press Writer

ABOARD THAI AIRWAYS TO LOS ANGELES – John Mark Karr, the suspect in the death of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, sipped champagne and ate fried king prawns in business class Sunday after being put aboard a flight to Los Angeles to face charges in the United States.

As Karr wined and dined in style and chatted with the three U.S. officials escorting him, another bombshell emerged: Reports that Karr sought treatment at a Thai sex-change clinic.

His Thai Airways International flight took off about 8 p.m. (9 a.m. EDT) for the 15-hour flight to Los Angeles. Karr’s journey will eventually end in Boulder, Colo., where he is expected to face charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and child sexual assault in connection with the young beauty queen’s 1996 killing.

Karr, dressed neatly in a red, short-sleeve, button-down shirt and black tie, was not handcuffed while being whisked through Don Muang International Airport in Bangkok. At the departure gate, he talked amiably with fellow passengers.

The 41-year-old teacher sat in a business class window seat next to Mark Spray, an investigator with the Boulder County District Attorney’s office. A U.S. Embassy official and an agent with “Homeland Security” on his T-shirt were also part of the escort party.

    Yesterday I posted this.

My guess is he is some sort of child perv, who the republicans had something on.

They leaned on him, and promised him a deal of some sort if he’d confess to the Ramsey killings. Since he was already likely facing prosecution on some other issue, leaning on him was easy.

    Sound pretty close?
    Comment by WORFEUS — August 19, 2006 @ 11:19 pm

When I wrote that yesterday I never guessed I’d be reading about the killer being wined and dined by DHS. I imagined they’d keep that sort of stuff under wraps until the story wasn’t so hot. I figured they’d make the guy at least “look” like he was having a bad time.

I never guessed they’d be feeding him champagne and king prawns (whatever the hell a prawn is) the very next day. And putting a DHS guy with him?

I guess they still feel like they’re untouchable.

I really hope I’m not the only one noticing this…

  279. trueblue says:

    Very well put, Clyde!
    I’ll talk to you soon!

  280. GSD says:

Jonbenet is shiny shit thrown at the masses to make them “look over there”. With all that is going on in the world the Jonbenet Media is focusing on the least consequencial story of all.

Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, Tureky and Iran shelling Kurdistan.

Look over there, it is a dead child beauty queen. They might as well start building vomitoriums and throwing people to the lions for entertainment too.

    -GSD

  281. WORFEUS says:

    Its more than that GSD.

If someone is using the Department of Homeland security like a domestic CIA, leaning on some child perv to get him to confess to a murder he didn’t commit to offset a news story, then this is much more than a little smoke and mirrors.

  282. Zooey says:

(whatever the hell a prawn is)

  285. WORFEUS says:

    Ah. Shrimp.

    Thanks Zooey.

Yes. DHS has been involved since day 1 on this. DHS answers to the White House.

The same day Ned Lamont beats their pal Lieberman, the story gets quashed because Jon Bonets supposed killer “suddenly” confesses out of the blue.

And even though the guys in Thailand, the US Department of Homeland Security is involved from the get go.

That night, every news channel plasters the news about the killer and all but ignores the Lamont victory, once more killing bad press for the President and killing good press for the Democrats.

We all think it looks suspicious, then a day or so later we find the guy being wined and dined by DHS, on a “business class” flight (I didn’t know they served champagne in business class), eating fancy shrimp, sitting comfortably and WITH NO HANDCUFFS.

    It doesn’t smell.

    It REAKS.

  286. Briseadh na Faire says:

Deaprtment of Homeland Security, protecting us from terrorists at home and abroad.

Department of Homeland Security, protecting George W. Bush’s ass, at home and abroad.

One more question and then I’ll stop being a thread detractor.

Does anyone recall seeing this guy before?

If a man has spent 6 years in a Viet Cong POW camp, why do we consider him a hero? Because he survived the 6 years while others died? What was his great accomplishment other than surviving?

The media makes McCain out to be a hero, but he is the Manchurian Candidate that we need to fear.

He is not that intelligent, has a terrible personality and has been identified (by his staff) at cursing at things that don’t go his way, and has a war monger attitude that doesn’t have a lot of logic behind his “philosophies”….but the press has great access to him and loves him because of that, so the propaganda of McCain continues…..

Please spare us this attempt to MAKE McCain the next President…….

McCain is a very Dangerous Candidate for the US….

Oh, by the way, anyone know how much AIPAC money is behind McCain? I’d love to see that number…………………..hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm……………………..

  301. Zooey says:

  302. WORFEUS says:

    That video is priceless.

It is a perfect example of how the right views EVERYONE.

They glorify the police, until they dare to disagree with them on anything.

Then even this policeman, who was polite and professional through the whole incident, even this guy is now going “straight to hell”, cause he dared give a ticket to an O’Reilly listener.

Fantastic video. What a find. I wonder how they got it?

    Comment by scared of McCain….the Manchurian Candidate…. — August 20, 2006 @ 9:38 pm

When John McCain had the opportunity to leave the most notorious hellish prison camp in all VietNam, he instead opted to let his buddies go first, and ended up enduring another year of hell for it.

That kind of sacrifice is one that earns him some respect.

I’d never vote for him. But I respect him.

That doesn’t even come close to explaining what a child molester and a murderer, was doing sitting in shorts, with NO HANDCUFFS, sipping champagne and eating shrimp with a Department of Homeland Security officer.

    For an accused murderer?

    And whats DHS doing there?

  308. Clyde the Ripper says:

    WORFEUS,

We all know the answer to that. The freak is a shill and the DPS clowns are on a paid vacation. Bushco/Turdblossom never expected the media to advertise the fact–they got caught with their pedophile down. He would have been brought back here and in a year or two the charges would have been dropped and he would fly first class to some secluded island with a lot of young girls. Meanwhile Thailand is counting the massive aid that they just received for some dear project. Maybe GAO could find out the numbers.

The flake is not too dumb, however, Bangkok is our favorite place outside the US. We try to make at least one trip a year to shop at the weekend market.

  315. Marie says:

MTP replay is on now and I am seeing for myself that McCain is nothing but double-talk.
He doesn’t like Rumsfeld, but Bush should keep him.
We need more troops, but we don’t.
There is not a civil war yet, but the generals are right.
He has confidence in W, even though he’s made (many) mistakes.
He’s confident that Bush will do the right thing, even though all his advisors are wrong.
WTF is wrong with this man?!
His name is popular among the brain dead repugs who will vote for him, but if they listen to him they might see the folly of a vote for him.

  316. Marie says:

McCain is also criticizing the court ruling this week against the illegal NSA wiretapping.
Like so many politicos, he is critical of the judge’s wording, and so he throws out the ruling – critics are neglecting to note that the crux of the ruling was that Bush has been operating outside of the law and there is no defense.
If there is a retroactive absolution (Specter’s so called compromise) it will still mean that Bush has broken federal law more than 30 times.
There is a felon in the White House and no one will say so, much less throw him out.

  317. Heynow says:

My god… Please anyone who supports this war then put a uniform on and get over there. We are a disgrace in the eyes of the rest of the world and now the rest of the world knows that America is weak and stupid overall. We have a great military but poor leadership. Lets bring the troops home before any more lives are totally wasted. The war in Iraq is not a war on terror. Its a war of personal revenge of one stupid selfish evil man named Bush.

    Trueblue…

What do you have against people enlisting in the navy / army / marines anyway?

  338. Marie says:

Warrior, I wish you well, but I also wish you had listened to some advice before enlisting.
Unfortunately the majority of those volunteering for military service did so for the educational opportunities that would otherwise be out of their reach.
It’s too bad that higher education is not available to anyone who wants it and has the capability to succeed – but as it is now, funds for all those programs are cut, military families are on welfare, and worst of all, wounded vets are given short shrift as VA facilities are closed and underfunded – not to mention that the equipment in Iraq is inadequate and worn out.
Expressing your patriotism and getting a door open in your future is a good thing, but I am afraid that under this chimp-in-chief, your good intentions and admirable traits are being exploited for the oil barons, the wealthy who don’t need a leg up in educational opportunities, and the AWOL guy himself.
    Good luck to you.

  346. Warrior says:

  363. JPark says:

Warrior, didn’t you here about that school in Florida that the FBI had under surveillence. You know, the one that trained terrorists to fly? You know, the FBI reports Bush ignored?

  364. Warrior says:

Juan C said that wars are the result of poor people fighting poor people to defend the rich. Iran wants to wage war on Israel, and I wanted Juan C to further elaborate how that ties into his theory.

  365. madashell says:

As far as I know, and I know because I hung out with them, the ONLY ones who get to FLY JETS are the college graduates who have gone to OFFICER TRAINING SCHOOL. I knew A LOT of Navy aviators back in the 1980’s, and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM WAS A COLLEGE GRADUATE. When they finish office training – they become ENSIGNS first. If you are enlisting, your chances of EVER flying a jet is NIL.

Like we’ve already stated, we support and appreciate our troops, that’s why we don’t want them to be target practice in a country we had no business being in, for a made up war that had nothing to do with Iraqies.

You, However, are not one. A real soldier does not go to ANY website for “moral support.”

  373. JPark says:

Hey chickenwarrior, you didn’t answer. What does Israel have to do with us. Secondly, what kind of idiot thinks Iran will attack them? Do you remember Mutually Assured Destruction or are you too young?

  374. JPark says:

Warrior, let’s see. Joining the military and not believing in the chance you will die. Hmmm.

  375. Warrior says:

I didn’t say Isarel had anything to do with us. All I was asking was for Juan C to elaborate on his theory of wars.

    2. Naive? Just because Bushco attacks anything that moves does not mean every country is as self-destructive. Israel would wipe Iran off the map.

How can we miss you, Joe, if you won’t go away?…

John McCain’s favorite Democrat managed to get on television again this weekend … and … well … he’s still a Republican. (In fact, John Kerry says he’s a specific Republican: Dick Cheney…)…

Why did you repeatedly invoke my screen name yesterday? Did someone hi-jack my name? I didn’t post at all here yesterday. You made many other false allegations as well.

were you to have read up-thread, and understood, the allagory reference of sybil – perhaps your comment would be more enlightning.

regardless, if the shoe fits – you seem desire to wearing it. interesting choice you make.

  436. Sybil says:

    nym@alias:

What about the other false allegations you made about other people, like Steve53 for example?
No nym,it’s you who is not following the thread,or threads. Get to know the style of the people who post here and then YOUR comments will be more enlightened.

  437. Allen says:

Not that I agree with McCain BUT At least it is a strategy! And one that takes the actual situation into account.

Rummy and bunch’s plans are apparently to cross fingers and wish really really hard.

  438. nym@alias.net says:

    about the other false allegations

others can formulate their own conclusions.

Leave it to a sailor to recommend that more soldiers and marines be put in harms way. Where the hell does he think we will get additional troops – extend tours in Iraq perhaps?

And what will they do there, other than try to stay out of the line of fire, so that they can return home safely?

Let’s reiforrce by sending the neocons and their children to Bahgdad, Ramadi and Fallujah.

  441. Berkeley Bubble - Rethinking Progressivism in US Politics and Foreign Policy » McCain Supports More Troops in Iraq, hires Bush Advisers for Campaign says:

[...] McCain Supports More Troops in Iraq, hires Bush Advisers for Campaign By JRyan86 On Meet the Press this weekend, Senator McCain proposed INCREASING the number of troops we send to Iraq, which sounds like proposing an escalation of American involvement in the Iraq Civil War.  Did McCain somehow suddenly feel emboldened by pol numbers showing Lieberman ahead of Lamont in the general election, that he decided he would take the polar opposite position of Lamont? “PERVERSIONS TO THE IMPERIALIST AMERICAN PIGS”

(a day in the life of a Baghdad family – Bashir, a young man, enters his family’s apartment)

Bashir: Greetings Father, Praise be to Allah.
    Father: Praise be to Allah.
Bashir: It’s hot in here. Did we have any electricity today?
Father: One hour, tops. May Allah rain perversions on the Imperialist American Pigs!
Bashir: That sucks. A thousand perversions to the Infidels.
Father: What did you do today?
Bashir: Praise be to Allah, I put out one roadside IED and helped prepare a suicider for a Mosque mission at evening prayers.
Father: Praise be to Allah, but did you stop by the Coalition Forces Outreach Center like your Mother asked you to?
    Bashir: Yes, Papa I did.
Father: And did you tell them that death squads have harassing and threatening your Mother, sisters and our neighbors?
Bashir: Yes Papa I did. They said that they already knew and intended to step up patrols. They were very sympathetic and really quite civil.
Father: A thousand perversions to the Imperialist Occupiers.
Bashir: Praise be to Allah, a thousand perversions.

  443. truecry says:

Send more troops in? Why don’t we just refine and run our SUVs on American and Iraqi blood and skip all that bureaucracy and politics?
When is the government gonna learn from history and figure out that controling people in another country doesn’t make your country any safer. Let the Iraqis do it THEIR way.
